We share with youa 25 year retrospect
This booklet will take you on a succint journey of the world as it was.
Boss of the Year®
Leadership AwardThe Award was launched in 1990 to recognise excellence in workplace leardership and create a pool of role models for South Africa
From the outset the aim of the Award was to achieve four key objectives: 1. Introduce the concept of leader beyond the spheres of politics and sport
2. Discover the criteria for what REALLY makes a good boss by asking the workers and
not the theorists
3. Promote good leadership practices by identifying and rewarding those incumbents who
exemplified and embodied the necessary attributes and skills
4. Fast track leadership consciousness among workplace leaders
Its stated vision To make the Boss of the Year® Award become recognized as the most prestigious award
in the workplace by identifying exceptional bosses and establishing them as role models for
the South African community.

Oneoftheabovefinalistswillbethe25thBossoftheYear®Titleholder.
The year 2014 commemorates 25 years of Boss of the Year® Leadership Award! It sees the culmination of a quarter century
of work and of finding the men and women, who at the helm (of their organisations or departments) have shown to have the
X-factor in the realm of workplace leadership. With the 2014 titleholder being the 25th holder of the title Boss of the Year, we
announce that as from 2015 the award is receiving a refreshing surge of energy as it prepares itself for the next 25 years.
As from 2015 the Award will be known by its acronym BOTY, and the call for nominations will therefore be for the BOTY
Leadership Award. The nominee that will rise to the top will be known as the recipient of the BOTY Leadership Award (and
no longer as Boss of the Year). The move to using the acronym`BOTY` protects a longstanding brand whilst opening the
award to a new generation of leaders who will face a new generation of challenges and working climates, and who will not be
comfortable with the nomenclature “Boss”.
20
“The role of leadership continues to entrench itself in our interactions with society, the business world and our day to day tasks. As more and more leaders emerge in our society due to the never ending need for leadership, the future role of the BOTY leadership award will have to be extended not only to professionals in the business world, but also to individuals who display outstanding leadership abilities for their roles in society. Well wishes to the BOTY Leadership Award and may it continue to lead in identifying individuals who make a difference to our lives.” Ayanda Nakedi
It is with great enthusiasm that I convey my very best wishes for the future of the BOTY Leadership Award. It provides a strong platform for the promotion and recognition of high integrity, results driven, inspirational leadership in South Africa – the key which will unlock a better life for all.” Brand Pretorius
“Many things can happen in a quarter of a century. One of the notable events in South Africa was the end of apartheid. The Boss of the Year Award has been in there, in the thick of things by being involved in the change. The change was: ‘the only award that belongs to the people’, this is the only award given to leadership based on what the people say. What can be more democracy than that? In the next quarter, the BOTY Leadership Award will be in the history to redefine leadership in all spheres of life, in the whole of the continent of Africa.” Chris Mukoki
“Leadership is not a pre-ordained right. Leadership is an inordinate privilege. To be the title bearer of the BOTY Leadership Award is the privilege to bear the torch on behalf of all Leaders. Enjoy the moment that the spotlight shines on you. Then proceed to light a blazing path that inspires others to follow with purpose!” Edward Chr Kieswetter
The Great BOTY Family is now Twenty FiveLeading through Leaders is for what the team strive
A full quarter century to excellence devotedAnd Connecting Generations is what they’ve promoted
To A-M and Ornella and their wonderful teamWhich all of us hold in the highest esteem
Who gave birth to BOTY, and through childhood did raisePast adolescence, to strapping full personhood phase
Whilst poets we ain’t, we can all shout HoorayAnd wish the whole BOTY Team a Happy Birthday!!
So gung-ho and push hard for the way on to fiftyNurturing leadership - wow, that’s pretty nifty!!
Geoff Garrett
“I wish to extend my best wishes to the amazing organizers of the Boss of the Year event, and warmly welcome in the new era of Recipient of the BOTY Leadership Award.
The first 25 years of Boss of the Year coincided closely with the first 20 years of freedom and democracy in our country, and the
winners of the award during that period reflected both the diversity of our beautiful country and the unique type of leadership that a society in transition requires.
We are entering a new era now and it is only fit and proper that the new era should be marked by a refreshed vision, which will inspire a new generation of leaders. My best wishes and warmest regards, Ismail Dockrat
“As an alumni of the 2013 Boss of the Year tribe, this award has set the tone for inspirational leaders who can move between the balcony and the dance floor operating with authenticity and integrity. This recognition of our leaders moves onwards and upwards in 2015 as the BOTY Leadership Award.
Together the Boss of the Year® and soon to be BOTY alumni will continue the platform for networking and connecting the dots as the alumni share lessons learned, their vulnerability and strengths and extend a hand to all those who come after us, who will take the leadership legacy to the next level.
Thus the behaviours and impact that the BOTY Leadership Award recognises will be lived through its alumni as servant leadership within an industry and beyond. It is about enabling our future leaders to realise their potential, recognising when to get out of their way and catalysing, sustainable and profitable business growth through igniting the fire in our people whilst operating within a strong culture of sound conduct and governance.” Jo-Ann Pohl
“The role of boss is such an important one and it’s wonderful that BOTY recognises and honours this leadership function. Thank you for everything you have done in the past and best wishes for the BOTY Leadership Award in the future.” Justin Hawes
“I hope that the Boss of the Year® Leadership Award will continue to grow, and that the winners will strive to make a difference to the lives of others.” Prof. Laetitia Rispel
“This award is symbolic of the concerted efforts of leaders to embed contemporary Leadership philosophy in the South African workplace. It should adequately reflect our quest for leadership transformation that addresses the challenges of dynamic and changing workplaces. I would like to see the ‘award’ playing a leading role, increasing it’s visibility and actively participating on leadership discussions within the private companies and public sector entities.” Lerato Mosiah
“More often leaders are viewed as omnipotent by virtue of being able to drive systems. We rarely appreciate that they need to be motivated. Being a beneficiary of this noble initiative, I would like to wish BOTY Leadership Award another successful 25 years. If it was possible in the past 25 years – it is inevitable in the next 25 years – to take leadership to another level.” Dr Moraka Nakedi Makhura
Messages for the future from BOTY Club members
