A cost and programmatically effective strategy to equip student-athletes, over a multi-year period, to adopt an academic and life balance, but to model it as standout athletes; to advocate it among their non-athlete peers; and to use their influence among peers to Remove Any Obstacles to achievement they see in the path of a young Black boy or girl seeking to excel academically and join the ranks of the successful. According to reports, one-third of high school students are dropping out of school. But among the students who don’t drop out are the hundreds of thousands of youngsters who participate in sports. High school sports can create strong ties within a school and community; and standout high school athletes are followed with wide interest by their peers.

At the university level, a recent University of Pennsylvania study on Black Male Student-Athletes and Racial Inequities in NCAA Division I College Sports, found that between 60-65% of the Black athletes who do graduate high school and go on to play college basketball and football at the Division 1 level fail to graduate. The ability to perform college level academics is directly tied to high school academic performance, which is directly tied to preparedness and persistence. A major contributing factor to the systemic academic failure of Black athletes is the fact they are steered, or steer themselves, into a sports track and neglect their own personal development.

Our Business of Success beyond Sports, or BOSS Program, is an innovative, economical and programmatically-effective approach whose strategy is to continue to attract, retain, inspire, motivate and mentor a highly visible – and highly emulated – group of young men and women from public high schools.

The goal and mission for them is to not only succeed academically themselves, but to model and advocate their successful values and behaviors with all their peers and classmates.

What makes our BOSS program unique is the Multiplier Effect. We’re equipping student-athletes, over a multi-year period to not only adopt an academic and life balance, but to advocate it among their non-athlete peers; and to use their influence to Remove Any Obstacles to achievement they see in the path of a young Black boy or girl seeking to excel academically and join the ranks of the successful. There’s also a Train the Trainer aspect, with the end goal of combating the “young Blacks are only athletes” stereotyping in society.

BOSS students will participate in a 2-week (or longer depending on funding) camp each summer from middle school through high school and college, and will be engaged in exciting learning opportunities during each school year on alternate weekends that will include the opportunity to shadow the many different professionals who are subject matter experts, luncheon keynote speakers or special guest speakers.

Participation in BOSS helps students – and parents: Ensure participation in college-bound high school classes Increase expectations and forge the link between life balance, academic and time management skills, college and success Enable access to tutoring, test prep and standardized testing Enable access to mentoring, life skills, leadership and personal development Promote persistence to college graduation and a meaningful course of study Equip parents with the tools required to remain actively involved in the process Expose participants to successful professionals of both similar and dissimilar backgrounds (i.e., the range of people in the professional world which awaits them) Impact the effort to affect the non-athlete Black male and female student population through the student- athlete influence.

Our core objective is to invest our accumulated knowledge and experience at a critical time for young men and women – starting when they’re still boys and girls - to develop alternative career/life strategies and be able to attain them. It starts with our BOSS camp, a 2-week experience for entering Classes each summer, beginning in middle school, followed by a series of weekend events and experiences during each school year.

We have done substantial work with student-athletes at the high school and NCAA level. We have a track record of success helping professional athletes transition to successful personal and professional lives. Our staff and team of consultants includes a broad range of professional backgrounds. We are confident that BOSS will dramatically increase the number of low and middle-income Black male and female students who enter and legitimately graduate college, and succeed beyond.

I wish to express my appreciation to you for allowing my son Jonathan, and my nephew Kristopher to participate in the BOSS program this summer. It’s great that you guys have developed a program (BOSS) that allows student-athletes the opportunity to realize their potential beyond sports . - Jonathan McDaniel, Sr., Parent

Thanks for including Adam in this summer’s BOSS program. The information you shared and the experiences you afforded Adam and the other participants will help them tremendously in school to be more focused, organized, build character, and acquire a higher level of self esteem. I look forward to Adam continuing his participation in BOSS and we are excited about the possibilities . - Jillian Alexander, Parent

I loved the field trips and the Dodgers game the most. The different people you had visit all had great stuff to say. You know a lot of important people :) Thanks for helping me believe that anything is possible if I believe and put in the work. - Rashaan Hamilton, Student
