Into a ConnectedFutureBoth the way people work within the Bosch Group and the worldin which it does business are characterized by increasing inter-connection. The number of devices and systems automaticallyexchanging data with each other is rising rapidly. This automaticcommunication is the central characteristic of the internet ofthings and services, which will increasingly determine how mar-kets work. Accordingly, Bosch products and services are alsobeing integrated into networked systems: from the drive unitand display of an e-bike, to energy-efcient ofce complexes,to a global manufacturing network. For Bosch, this is both achallenge and an opportunity.

For Bosch, 2012 was a year of dynamic further development, which was also linked to adjustments to its strategic alignment. The slowdown in the global economy braked sales growth inthe Bosch Group over the course of the year, resulting in anunsatisfactory development of result.

The key factors in this development, in addition to low salesgrowth and the delayed impact of cost-cutting measures, weresubstantial burdens in the photovoltaics segment and upfrontinvestments for a large number of growth projects.

Nonetheless, the company continued to extend its internationalfootprint through company acquisi tions and investments in newplants, and once again spent a high amount on research anddevelopment activities. A large number of divisions are alsoworking on products and services which make use of increas-ing connectivity.

Bosch will continue along this path in 2013, even though it doesnot expect to feel any economic tailwind. Its objectives areto achieve a better increase in sales in the Bosch Group than

in 2012 and to improve result signicantly. Bosch corpo ratestrategy will remain focused on the areas of energy efciency, resource conservation, environmental protection, safety, andcomfort. The company wants to extend its market position inthese areas.
