The DebacleThis week’s parsha features one

of the most tragic events to have occurred to the Jewish people in their journey towards the Promised Land: Ten of the twelve miraglim sent by Moshe return with a slanderous report of Eretz Yisroel. This debacle was responsible for delaying their entry into the Promised Land by close to forty years.

The tragedy began when ten of the twelve miraglim decided that their commission as spies was a license for them to additionally voice their opinion as to whether it was possible or not to conquer the E”Y.

The very fact that Hashem accepted the notion of sending scouts to survey the land was sufficient proof to them that this conquest was intended to be a natural process. If it were a miraculous conquest then there would certainly be no need to survey the land first.

Since Hashem acceded to their request to send the miraglim to scout out the land, it was “demonstrated” to them that Hashem wanted them to determine if it was possible for the fledgling Jewish nation to succeed in this conquest. They drew the conclusion that there was no natural basis for them to succeed.

They were clearly mistaken. They exaggerated their role. They were never charged with the mission to

make decisions. Their job was to simply report back as to the strengths and weaknesses of the Cana’anim, and nothing else.

Thus, when they returned and instilled fear into the hearts of Bnei Yisroel, who cried, they were punished severely and as a consequence of Bnei Yisroel’s reliance on the twelves spies and not on Hashem, they were kept in the desert for almost another 40 years. Only the new generation would live to see the Promised Land.

This entire episode which occurred in the formative years of the Jewish people must serve as a lesson for us in our final years on our journey towards the future redemption and our return to E”Y.

A Table or A Menorah; Wealth or Wisdom?

In the instructions that Moshe gave the miraglim, he told them to “Go up to the south and go up to the mountain.”

The fact that Moshe’s opening instructions to the spies was to “Go up to the south and go up to the mountain” alludes to the fact that it must contain an important lesson for us in our own personal journies. Moshe’s introductory words conveyed a message to the spies that if heeded, would have prevented

them from perverting and subverting their mission that brought disaster upon themselves and the entire Jewish people.

What does “Going up to the south” imply?

The Talmud (Bava Basra 25b) states: “One who wishes to become knowledgeable should face south [while davening]; whereas one who wishes to be become wealthy should face north.” The Talmud then adds that these different directions parallel the location of two of the kelim in the Sanctuary of the Beis Hamikdash.

On the north side of the Beis Hamikdash, the Shulchan was situated. The Shulchan was a special table upon which twelve loaves of bread were placed each week. This table symbolized the material blessings that Hashem provides. These blessings were generated specifically by the avoda in the Beis Hamikdash that involved the placing and eating of these twelve Lechem Hapanim that were placed in the north side of the Sanctuary.

On the south side of the Mikdash, the Menorah—the seven branched Menorah—was placed and kindled. The light generated by the Menorah symbolized the knowledge of Torah, which is compared to light.

Therefore, if one directs their mind and heart to the

north; i.e., if their focus in davening that expresses their aspiration is to achieve material prosperity—albeit, in the context of the Holy Beis Hamikdash, which means that one’s material acquisitions are obtained legally and ethically and that they will be utilized to support the spiritual institutions of the Jewish people— Hashem will grant them their wish.

If their focus is on the “south”, i.e., the pursuit of knowledge, Hashem will grant them their request and they will achieve a higher level of Torah understanding that will enable them to bring light and enlightenment to others as well.

Breathing Intelligence

With this introduction we can understand what Moshe had in mind when he told them first to go up to the south. He was intimating to them that they should direct their energies not towards the material benefits that Eretz Yisroel will certainly yield, but that they should focus instead on living in E”Y for the purpose of acquiring a heightened level of spiritual awareness.

This is consistent with the statement in the Talmud (Bava Basra, 138b): “The air of Israel makes one wise.”

However, Moshe was careful to add the caveat, “go up to the south.” There are two ways of going south, up or down. When one sees intellectual pursuits as the goal and not simply as the means by which to live an ideal moral and spiritual life, the intellect can actually drag the person down.

Moshe was quite aware of the pitfall of allowing these intellectual giants to make decisions based solely upon their own theories as to the geo-political situation in the land of Cana’an. He knew that they were capable of using their brilliant minds to find ways of rationalizing

a conclusion that called for nothing less than rebellion against Hashem.

Thus Moshe exhorts them: “Go up south.” By all means go south; use your intellect to the fullest. But make sure that it will take you up to a higher spiritual plane. Make sure that the intellect is in sync with Hashem’s will and not with your own preconceived notions of what is conquerable and what is not.

Two Scenarios: Which is Yours?

We are living in a most crucial period of history, poised to enter into the ultimate Promised Land: E”Y. This is meant not only in the geographical sense of the word; that we will all return to E” Y with Moshiach who will rebuild the Holy Beis Hamikdash. It is also intended to describe a new spiritual reality that has been promised to us. We are about to enter into a world that is good beyond anything we can imagine.

There are two valid scenarios for the future redemption.

One scenario is that we will have a world of peace and prosperity.

The other scenario is that we will attain the highest level of spiritual enlightenment.

Our desire for Moshiach may be based on either consideration. One can crave for the time of the Redemption because it will solve all of our physical problems and satisfy our material needs. Alternatively, we ought to yearn for the coming of Moshiach because we will be able to reach unimagined levels of Torah knowledge.

The Rambam describes these two scenarios in the following manner:

“The Tzadikim and Nevi’im did not yearn for the Era of Moshiach in order to rule over the entire world, nor in order that they have dominion over the other nations, nor that they be exalted by them, nor in order

that they could then eat, drink and celebrate. Rather, their aspiration was that [Bnei Yisroel] be free [to involve themselves] in the Torah and its wisdom, without anyone to oppress or disturb them…”

The Rambam continues—and with these words he concludes his monumental work of Jewish law, the Mishneh Torah:

“In that Era there will be neither famine nor war, neither envy nor competition, for good things will flow in abundance and all the delicacies will be as freely available as dust. The occupation of the entire world will be solely to know Hashem. The Jews will therefore become great Tzadikim and know the hidden matters, and will attain an understanding of their Creator to the [full] extent of mortal potential; as it is written, “For the world will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the ocean bed.”

From the above it is clear that there will be material gain and even an abundance in delicacies, and if the prospect of enjoying these delicacies motivates us to work towards Redemption, it is still acceptable. Nevertheless, our primary reason for desiring the Moshiach Times is for the new vistas of knowledge that will be open to us.

And this is the timely message conveyed to us in Moshe’s first instructions to the miraglim: In our quest for a better world it behooves us to aspire to the higher motivation—“Go south!” Our desire should be for the acquiring of knowledge.

But, the follow up message should be that in our quest for greater knowledge, we must realize that the knowledge is subordinate to the way we live our lives.

By all means, “Go south!” But, make sure that you are not descending into the valley in that pursuit, but rather, climbing the mountain.

PARSHA IN PRACTICAL

It was just another regular day at Project CHAI. Calls were fielded as soon as they came in,

information was given, and questions were answered. The humdrum quality of this ordinary day was interrupted when Mr. S.’s call came in.

His wife, a 29-year-old mother of four, became critically ill a few short weeks ago. In what seemed like one day to the next, this young mother’s condition deteriorated rapidly. On Tuesday morning, the doctors informed her family to prepare themselves…

I listened to the broken voice of a man at the brink of loss. He was confused, and scared. He was worried about his children. How would they take the news? How could he prepare them for the inevitable?

I assured Mr. S. that we would help as best as we could. I instructed him to stay by his wife’s side while I arranged a visit from his two eldest children. The two boys, ages ten and eight, accompanied me without question. As soon as I told them that I would be taking them to visit their mother, their faces lit up with joy.

That hour was heart-wrenching. I had to prepare these two innocent children for a meeting that was essentially a ‘farewell’. We sat down together in the hospital’s lobby, and we started talking about their mother.

“This Shavuos, my mother was very weak,” the older one said. “She

coughed the whole time and she could barely walk.”

“That’s why your mother is here, in this big hospital,” I told him. “There are many great doctors here who are giving her the best care possible. Your

father is with her all the time, making sure that everything is being done to make her more comfortable.”

The boys nodded in understanding. Then they started talking. Thirty minutes later, I had learned about the mother who sang and played with them, who laughed at their jokes and worried about their tears, the mother who taught them about baking, who never forgot to prepare their lunches and snacks.

I then prepared them for what she would look like.

“Your mother loves you,” I assured them. “She may be sleeping the entire time when you’re there. She is very weak, so she might not even have the strength to talk, but she still loves you, more than you can ever imagine.”

After our lengthy discussion, I felt that the boys were ready for the visit. Together, we headed to the elevator. The boys were silent, no doubt preparing themselves for what they were about to see. When we entered their mother’s room, they didn’t flinch. They seemed not to notice the machines and monitors as they focused their gaze on their beloved mother.

She was aware that they had entered the room. The boys started talking to her; I had told them for a moment to pretend to be ordinary children discussing the day’s events with their mother. And the boys talked. And talked. But it was obvious that she was struggling to keep her eyes open, to focus on her children.

“Kinderlach, tell your mother how much you love her. Sing to her,” I gently suggested.

The boys started singing. Their sweet voices were raised in song, expressing all the love and fear and hope that lay concealed in their tender hearts. Standing near them, I felt the enormity of the moment. It was an

The ten-year-old, a mature and precocious child, took a step closer to his mother and said, “Mommy, please… Give me one smile. Mommy, just one smile.”

We held our breath as Mrs. S. visibly struggled to overcome her pain. At last, she managed to give her son a weak but powerful smile.

“Thank you, Mommy,” he said tearfully. “Thank you. I love you.”

The boys bent over their mother’s bed and kissed her. They had merited this final visit with their mother, which would serve as a warm memory for the coming days.

When we reached the lobby, I sat down with the children and gently told them what was to come. We spoke about what was and what wouldn’t be again. We discussed the pain, the hurt. We discussed their feelings and their fears. For nearly an hour, we spoke and we cried.

As the day progressed, Mrs. S.’s condition steadily worsened. That night, Hashem took back her neshama. The four children were already sleeping at the time, their future a dark question of a life without a mother who meant the world to them.

The following morning, a Project CHAI volunteer sat with the S. children and gently broke the news. They cried. And cried. But then the oldest child turned to his father and said, “Rabbi Klar told us that you will always be with us. You will make sure that we’ll be all right.”

Mr. S., swallowing his tears, assured him, “Yes, it’s true. I know that you will miss Mommy – we all will. But I’ll be here for you. We will get through this together.”

I spoke to the children on the phone, preparing them for the levaya, for the recital of Kaddish. It will be a long and difficult road for these innocent yesoimim, but they have taken the first steps with confidence.

Obama calls IRS targeting of certain groups ‘outrageous’

WASHINGTON -- Facing a wall of outrage from GOP lawmakers over revelations that the Internal Revenue Service targeted “tea party” groups and non-profit organizations that criticized the government, President Obama on Monday called the actions by agency personnel “outrageous” and said “there is no place for it.”

The president, who appeared alongside British Prime Minister David Cameron at the White House, weighed in on the IRS controversy for the first time and attempted to head off snowballing criticism from Republican lawmakers that he hadn’t personally condemned the agency’s targeting of conservative political groups for extra scrutiny.

Obama said he first learned about the IRS actions from news reports Friday. He said those responsible for the practice should be held “fully

accountable.” White House spokesman Jay Carney said later on Monday that White House Counsel’s Office was alerted during the week of April 22nd that the agency’s inspector general was completing a review about matters involving the office in Cincinnati.

Lois Lerner, the IRS director of exempt organizations, on Friday admitted that the agency made “mistakes” in the last few years and that employees in the agency’s Cincinnati

office routinely required conservative organizations seeking non-profit status to undergo more scrutiny.

Multiple conservative groups have said their applications were delayed and returned with lengthy requests for supporting materials, sometimes including website printouts and lists of guest speakers.

“You don’t want the IRS ever being perceived to be biased,” Obama said.

Even as Obama attempted to make his unhappiness clear with the IRS, Republicans continued to level their

criticism against the agency and the administration.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., on Monday called for Obama to fire acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller.

“It is clear the IRS cannot operate with even a shred of the American people’s confidence under the current leadership,” Rubio wrote in a letter to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew. “Therefore, I strongly urge that you and President Obama demand the IRS commissioner’s resignation, effectively immediately. No government agency that has behaved in such a manner can possibly instill any faith and respect from the American public.”

Some Democrats, including Sen. Max Baucus, on Monday joined Republican calls for a Congressional investigation of the IRS.

“I want to review the inspector general’s report first, but the IRS should be prepared for a full investigation into this matter by the Senate Finance Committee,” said Baucus, of Montana, who is chairman of the committee. “The IRS will now be the ones put under additional scrutiny.”

Obama added that neither party wants the IRS to be perceived as “anything less than neutral in terms of how they operate.” He added: “This is something that I think people are properly concerned about.”

Still, the president pointed to the inspector general’s ongoing investigation, saying he would not comment prematurely on specific findings.

The president added that his administration will get to the bottom of what happened at the IRS. “I have no patience for it. I will not tolerate it. “

E-mails unveiled last week show the State Department and other senior administration officials asking that references to terror groups and prior warnings be deleted from a unclassified memo on talking points about the incident shortly after the Sept. 11 attack.

GOP lawmakers have also criticized the State Department board that reviewed the incident for not interviewing then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

As the president held his press conference, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa announced that he had sent letters to Benghazi Accountability Review Board (ARB) co-chairs, former ambassador Thomas Pickering and former admiral Mike Mullen, requesting that they submit to transcribed interviews in anticipation of a public hearing on the board’s investigation.

“Three senior State Department officials who testified at the hearing criticized the ARB’s work as ‘incomplete’ and flawed because the ARB did not interview key witnesses and failed to hold senior officials accountable,” wrote Issa in the letter to Pickering. “On May 12, 2013, you defended the ARB’s work on Face the Nation. You stated that those criticisms are ‘unfair.’ … The White House and the State Department have touted the ARB’s report as the definitive account of how and why the Benghazi attacks occurred. It is necessary for the committee to understand whether the criticisms of the ARB’s work that we heard from witnesses on May 8, 2013, are valid.”

But the president pushed back, saying that his administration officials have been forthcoming about Benghazi

and suggesting that Republicans are more interested in scoring political points than figuring out how to prevent such incidents from happening again in hot spots where U.S. diplomats and other personnel are deployed.

“There is no there, there,” Obama said.

Obama and Cameron met for about hour at the White House before the news conference. Cameron said their talks centered on the economy, the ongoing civil war in Syria and next month’s Group of Eight summit that Cameron will host in Northern Ireland.

Both Cameron and Obama acknowledged they have a difficult task in persuading Russia to abandon Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime.

Obama noted that there are long-term “suspicions” by Russia toward the G-8 alliance — which includes the USA, Britain and Russia -- but both he and Cameron were trying to “break down” some of those suspicions.

“As a leader on the world stage, Russia has an interest and obligation to resolve this issue that can lead to an outcome we all want to see in the long-term,” Obama said.

“Syria’s history is being written in the blood of her people,” Cameron said. He added, “and it is happening under our watch.”

78-Year-Old Accused Bank Robber Blurts Out:

‘I Rob Banks -- It’s My Hobby’

An elderly man accused of robbing a San Diego bank wasn’t interested

in remaining silent about his alleged crimes.

During his arrest, he blurted out to a TV reporter: “I rob banks. It’s my hobby,” and told the judge during his first court appearance: “I’m guilty as charged.”

Dale E Jenkins, 78, was arrested

Monday for robbing a Comerica Bank branch by threatening to throw acid in the teller’s face, SanDiego6.com reported.

During the robbery, he was dressed in a three-piece suit and fedora. After receiving his money, he allegedly left the bank carrying his ill-gotten loot in a rolling suitcase and was picked up two blocks away, NBCSanDiego.com reported.

Jenkins reportedly netted only $80 from the bank, but it was what he said to KGTV-TV reporter Allison

Ash during his arrest that was truly priceless.

“I rob banks. It’s my hobby,” he said, adding that this robbery was his seventh. “Somebody needs to take care of the veterans in this country.”

Jenkins’ confession spree didn’t end there.

During his first court appearance on Tuesday, he blurted out to the judge, “I’m guilty as charged and do not want to go through any long trial. I can’t live on the streets anymore,” KGTV-TV reported.

The judge cut him off, warning him that anything he said will be used during a trial, according to the station.

Despite Jenkins’ advanced age, officials said there’s no evidence he might be the Geezer Bandit -- an elderly-looking man who robbed 16 banks between 2009 and 2011, according to the Associated Press.

Authorities suspect that robber was a younger man wearing a mask.

Rescuers have searched every home in devastated Moore, Okla., and the fire chief said he

is “98 percent sure” there are no more bodies or survivors in the rubble of the Oklahoma City suburb devastated by what has now been rated an EF-5 on the weather scale, a ranking reserved for the deadliest and rarest of twisters.

Word that the tornado had been classified as the most devastating funnel cloud punch Mother Nature can deliver came as the death toll held steady at 24, including nine children. The ranking, on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, puts the tornado in the same class as the deadliest in U.S. history, which hit Joplin, Mo., in 2011, killing 158 and injuring hundreds more.

“An EF-5 is as bad as it gets,” said Joe D’Aleo, co-chief forecaster for WeatherBell Analytics. “It’s equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane. It means winds were more than 200 miles per hour, and it means you have to be underground, because there will be nothing left above ground.”

Only 59 EF-5 tornadoes have touched down in the U.S. in the last 63 years, or just one-tenth of a percent of

all tornadoes. Yet the most

powerful of all twisters cause 20 percent of all tornado damage, and when they strike residential areas, they leave only rubble and misery in their wake. But a surprise revision downward of the death toll, which was initially reported at 51, and an outpouring of support from around the nation has left officials determined to heal.

“We will rebuild and we will regain our strength,” said Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, who went on a flyover of the area and described it as a “heartbreaking experience” that is “hard to look at.”

Gary Bird, fire chief for the community of 56,000, said Tuesday afternoon he was “98 percent sure” there are no more survivors or bodies to recover under the rubble. His comments came after emergency crews spent much of the day searching the town’s broken remnants for survivors of the twister that flattened homes and demolished an

elementary school. Bird said his goal is to conduct three searches of each location that he was hopeful the work could be completed by nightfall.

No additional survivors or bodies have been found since Monday night, Bird said.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., forecast more stormy weather Tuesday in parts of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma, including the Moore, Okla., area where the tornado hit. The tornado, estimated to be up to two miles wide, tore through Moore on Monday afternoon, a community of 41,000 people about 10 miles south of Oklahoma City.

Fallin said during a news conference Tuesday that many houses and buildings have been reduced to “sticks and bricks.” Homes were seen crushed into piles of broken wood. Cars and trucks were left crumpled on the roadside. At least 38,000 in the area remain without power.

New search-and-rescue teams moved at dawn Tuesday, taking over from the 200 or so emergency responders who worked all night. A helicopter shined a spotlight from above to aid in the search.

least two more times to ensure that no survivors -- or any of the dead -- were overlooked.

The death toll of the storm was initially 51, but the Oklahoma City medical examiner’s office downgraded it Tuesday to at least 24, saying some of the bodies may have been counted twice.

“To date, 24 deceased victims of the tornado have been transported to our Oklahoma City office, and positive identifications have been made in the vast majority of those, and these are ready for return to their loved ones,” Elliott told FoxNews.com in an e-mail.

Nine of the bodies are children, seven of which were found at a school. Hospital officials say they’ve treated more than 200 patients, including more than 70 children.

“Our prayers are with the people of Oklahoma today,” President Barack Obama said in a Tuesday news conference, expressing gratitude for the residents and first responders who are assisting with the search and rescue efforts, and teachers who shielded their children as the tornado hit two schools.

“The people of Moore should know that their country will remain on the ground there for them, and be beside them as long as it takes,” Obama said. “Oklahoma needs to get everything that it needs right away.”

Fallin announced that the White House approved Oklahoma’s request for disaster assistance for five counties: Cleveland, Lincoln, McClain, Oklahoma and Pottawatomie. Additional damage assessments could be added to the declaration.

Fallin also urged Oklahomans to call 1-800-621-FEMA for help, and said the state set up a website, www.okstrong.ok.gov, for information on available emergency services.

Many land lines to stricken areas were down after the tornado hit, and cell phone networks were congested.

The storm was so massive that it will take time to establish communications between rescuers and state officials, Fallin said.

Crews continued their desperate search-and-rescue effort throughout the night at Plaza Towers Elementary, where the storm had ripped off the school’s roof, knocked down walls and turned the playground into a mass of twisted plastic and metal as students and teachers huddled in hallways and bathrooms.

Children from the school were among the dead, but several students were pulled out alive earlier Monday from

under a collapsed wall and other heaps of mangled debris. Rescue workers passed the survivors down a human chain of parents and neighborhood volunteers. Parents carried children in their arms to a triage center in the parking lot. Some of the students looked dazed while others appeared terrified.

James Rushing, who lives across the street from the school, heard reports of the approaching twister and ran to the school, where his 5-year-old foster son, Aiden, attends classes. Rushing believed he would be safer there.

“About two minutes after I got there, the school started coming apart,” he said.

As dusk fell, heavy equipment rolled up to the school, and emergency workers wearing yellow crawled among the ruins, searching for survivors. Crews used jackhammers and sledgehammers to tear away concrete, and chunks were being thrown to the side as the workers dug.

Douglas Sherman drove two blocks from his home to help.

”Just having those kids trapped in that school, that really turns the table on a lot of things,” he said.

After hearing that the tornado was headed toward another school called Briarwood Elementary, David Wheeler left work and drove 100 mph through

blinding rain and gusting wind to find his 8-year-old son, Gabriel. When he got to the school site, “it was like the earth was wiped clean, like the grass was just sheared off, ” Wheeler said.

Eventually, he found Gabriel, sitting with the teacher who had protected him. His back was cut and bruised and gravel was embedded in his head — but he was alive. As the tornado approached, students at Briarwood were initially sent to the halls, but a third-grade teacher — whom Wheeler identified as Julie Simon — thought it didn’t look safe and so ushered the

children into a closet, he said.The teacher shielded Gabriel with

her arms and held him down as the tornado collapsed the roof and starting lifting students upward with a pull so strong that it sucked the glasses off their faces, Wheeler said.

”She saved their lives by putting them in a closet and holding their heads down,” Wheeler said.

Families anxiously waited at nearby churches to hear if their loved ones had survived. A man with a megaphone stood Monday evening near St. Andrews United Methodist Church and called out the names of surviving children. Parents waited nearby, hoping to hear their sons’ and daughters’ names.

While some parents and children hugged each other as they reunited, others were left to wait, fearing the worst as the night dragged on.

Officials said one family with a baby tried to take shelter in a freezer, but did not survive, KFOR reports.

Pope Francis also expressed his condolences on his Twitter account.

“I am close to the families of all who died in the Oklahoma tornado, especially those who lost young children. Join me in praying for them,” he wrote.

funnel cloud could be seen marching slowly across the green landscape. As it churned through the community, the twister scattered shards of wood, awnings and glass all over the streets.

The tornado also destroyed the community hospital and some retail stores. Moore Mayor Glenn Lewis watched it pass through from his jewelry shop.

“All of my employees were in the vault,” Lewis said.

Chris Calvert saw the menacing cloud approaching from about a mile away.

“I was close enough to hear it,”

he said. “It was just a low roar, and you could see the debris, like pieces of shingles and insulation and stuff like that, rotating around it.”

Even though his subdivision is a mile from the tornado’s path, it was still covered with debris. He found a picture of a small girl on Santa Claus’ lap in his yard.

A map provided by the National Weather Service showed that the storm began west of Newcastle and crossed the Canadian River into Oklahoma City’s rural far southwestern side about 3 p.m. Monday. When it reached Moore, the twister cut a path through the center of town before lifting back into the sky at Lake Stanley Draper.

The National Weather Service issued an initial finding that the tornado was an EF-4 on the enhanced Fujita scale, the second most-powerful type of twister. It also said the tornado was at least a half-mile wide, but other news reports estimated the width to be up to 2 miles.

Monday’s powerful tornado loosely followed the path of a killer twister that slammed the region in May 1999; the storm then had winds clocked at 300 mph.

Kelsey Angle, a weather service meteorologist in Kansas City, Mo.,

said it’s unusual for two such powerful tornadoes to track roughly the same path. It was the fourth tornado to hit Moore since 1998. A twister also struck in 2003.

Lewis, who was also mayor during the 1999 storm, said the city was already working to recover.

“We’ve already started printing the street signs,” he said. “It took 61 days to clean up after the 1999 tornado. We had a lot of help then. We’ve got a lot of help now.”

On Sunday, at least two people were killed and 29 were injured in Oklahoma as a severe storm system generated several tornadoes in Kansas, Oklahoma and Iowa, leveling neighborhoods and sending frightened residents scurrying for shelter.

At least four separate twisters touched down in central Oklahoma late Sunday afternoon, including one near the town of Shawnee, 35 miles southeast of Oklahoma City, that laid waste to much of a mobile home park.

Elliott on Monday said the two people killed in the Shawnee-area tornado were 79-year-old Glen Irish and 76-year-old Billy Hutchinson. Both men were from the town.

Fishermen (116.0) — In late June, two people died when a 20-foot fishing boat capsized near the top of Alaska’s panhandle.

A third person was able to climb on top of the overturned skiff where he waited for rescue. As the BLS states, “this occupation is characterized by strenuous work, long hours, seasonal employment, and some of the most hazardous conditions in the workforce.”

Logging workers (91.9) — This occupation repeatedly takes a spot in the top 10 as not only one of America’s, but

the world’s, most dangerous jobs. In one recent example, 61-year-old John Hutt, a Colorado logger, cut off his toes after he became trapped under heavy logging equipment. He then drove himself to an area where there was enough cell phone reception to call an ambulance. In the logging industry, he is considered one of the lucky ones.

Airplane pilots and flight engineers (70.6) — It may be hard to believe that working as a police officer is safer than flying a plane, but

according to the BLS, this is true. The bureau states that there were 78 fatal work injuries for this industry in 2010.

Farmers and ranchers (41.4) — In August, a 40-year-old Illinois farmer was crushed to death by his tractor after it fell into a hole on

his farm, which he was filling with dirt. And just this month a woman was hit and run over by a skid loader on a farm in Wisconsin. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Mining machine operators (38.7) — The most infamous accident within this industry is undoubtedly the Upper Big Branch Mine

Before you complain about punching the time clock, read this list for some perspective. Maybe the coffee stinks and you don’t like your boss, but at least the threat of death or injury isn’t perpetually hanging over your head. The order may change from year to year, but these are typically the most dangerous jobs in America.

The thought of death or injury on the job doesn’t usually cross the minds of many office-dwellers. We are the lucky ones. There are a slew of occupations that, without the help of any extraordinary circumstances, claim the lives of many workers each year.Things have improved greatly over the past decades, however. In fact, since the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) began tracking fatal occupational injuries 19 years ago, 2009 was the safest year on record with 4,551 fatal work injuries. In good news, 2010 was similarly less deadly with 4,547 fatal work injuries. But the fatality rate of some occupations still remain alarmingly high. Below are the 10 most dangerous jobs in America according to the most recent (2010) figures from the BLS and the fatal work injury rate (per 100,000 workers).

April of 2010, which claimed the lives of 29 out of the 31 miners on site. The accident was the worst in the United States since 1970, when 38 minters were killed at Finley Coal Company’s

mines in Kentucky.

Roofers (32.4) — Just three weeks ago, four roofers in San Francisco were seriously injured when the roof of a six-

story apartment complex collapsed under them. And in April, a 56-year-old worker was re-securing metal roof panels on a building at Horenberger Field at Illinois Wesleyan University when he fell from scaffolding. He died in the hospital eight days later and his employer, Union Roofing, was cited by

OSHA for two safety violations.

Sanitation workers (29.8) — A tragic accident occurred

on Labor Day when a 17-year-old sanitation employee fell off of a moving garbage truck and was run over, killing him instantly.

Truck drivers and delivery workers (21.8) — In March of last year, a commercial truck driver was using his cell phone to

make a call when his truck crossed the median in central Kentucky, striking a van that was carrying 12 members of a family. 10 people in the van plus the truck driver were killed. Just this week, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, concluding its investigation of the crash, recommended banning the use of mobile phones by commercial

drivers except in emergencies.

Industrial machine workers (20.3) — The number of accidents

in this field is staggering. In January 2010, a Florida man had his genitals severed off after an accident involving machinery at an Future Foam Carpet Cushion in Orlando. The company was fined $42,500 by OSHA for 10 serious

safety violations.

Police officers (18.0) - In 2010, there was a nearly 40% increase in line-of-duty deaths among

U.S. law enforcement. The most recent officer death involved Deputy Sheriff Derrick Whittle of the Union County, Georgia, Sheriff’s Office. He was killed in an automobile accident while responding to a call on September 18th. He was the 48th law enforcement officer to be killed in a traffic-related incident that year.

The soldier woke up with a start. Disoriented by the lack of light, He felt for his flashlight and switched

it on, squinting in the sudden light. Everyone else was still sleeping. For a brief moment his mind was blank. He wondered why he was awake, and then he remembered. He lay down on top of his blanket, hands under his head.

Wide-awake, he stared unblinking at the ceiling until the dawn light shone seeped into the room and the wake up call could be heard. Still, he stayed unmoving, lost in thought, until his neighbor nudged him with his boot. “You’ll be late.” He got up and quickly pulled on his uniform.

Outside, They trudged up the hill to the dining room with the others. Today, the usual conversation was lacking. They all walked together in silence, the knowledge of what was to come already hanging over their heads like a heavy fog, weighing their heads down and slowing their feet.

He sat at the table, absently spooning his food into his mouth, although every spoonful may as well have been made of lead. He didn’t taste any of it.

Their commander signaled for quiet, and the slight buzz in the room faded immediately. “You all know what you have to do today. We must evacuate the entire area of Gush Katif. Be prepared to use force if necessary. The area we have been assigned to evacuate is Kefar Yam.”

Silence reigned over the group once more as they prepared themselves for the task they had been dreading for months. In just a few hours, they would be forcing their own people out of the only homes they had known, callously destroying

communities so painstakingly built over years.

The soldier’s mind was drifting off again, as they made their way to their destination. He shook his head, mentally berating himself. Now was not the time to feel any weakness. His training should have him prepared for something like this.

He heard the cries before he saw the ones making them. He paused for a moment, then pushed himself onward. And there he was. No amount of preparation could have him ready for this. Entire families stood together in huddles, crying and praying. There were children standing in groups, singing shema.

People screaming, crying,

begging their own people not to do this to them. It was enough to bring to tears to the most hardened soldier.

He stood there, not wanting to move, not wanting to cross that line between by standing soldier, and heartless home wrecker. His commander motioned to him, shouting through the chaos.

“There are families that won’t leave their homes. Some of you need to start breaking the doors down and getting them out.”

He began to walk down towards the houses. His commander touched his arm as he went past. No words were exchanged, they saw it in each others eyes. He gave a slight nod and continued until he reached a small house, and walked up the bumpy cobblestone path. He stared at the weathered wooden door, adorned only with a small mezuza, as if hoping it would open on its own. Unable to bring himself to break the door, he raised his hand and knocked lightly, almost timidly. He heard a noise: someone looking through the peephole. After a moment, to his surprise, the doorknob turned, and the door swung open. He raised his eyes which were ashamedly fixed on the ground, preparing himself. And froze. His eyes flew back to the ground, in shock. Nothing could have prepared him for this. The face he saw before him was a familiar one, one he hadn’t seen in a long time. One he hadn’t expected to see here, of all places. It was a face he had left behind for a different kind of life, a life bereft of religion. Tears filled his eyes as he slowly looked up at her again. Her eyes were filling, the tears silently flowing. And his heart broke beyond repair as he spoke. “Shalom, Ima.”

I often share with my clients a simple yet powerful analogy: to think about their relationship as they do about their bank account. That’s because investing in your

relationship is similar to saving money; the more you put into your bank account or relationship, the more you can take out when necessary.

The way to develop your emotional wealth is to invest as much equity as possible, so when the going gets tough, you can dig into your savings and avoid going into the red.

Investing in your relationship takes time and effort and is a challenge for all couples. In my own life, for example, I believe my relationship is so important that my wife and I try to schedule time alone together at least once a week to focus on our relationship. Despite the pressures of our busy lives, we try to creativity make sure we are investing in our marriage. Sometimes we go out to a restaurant to eat or just take a walk down the block together. Other times, we go grocery shopping together or head to the local convenience store in order to enjoy a few minutes alone just schmoozing about our day. When life goes into overdrive and time is limited, we take a “time out” for ourselves, and spend a few minutes in a quiet and secluded room in the home just talking to one another.

It really doesn’t matter what you do or what you talk about during your

private times together. What matters most is to give your spouse the feeling that he or she is the most important person in the world.

Of course, the way to build emotional equity in marriage is to make as many deposits as possible. In general, positive statements like complimenting one another, sharing appreciations and speaking kind words are “deposits.” Every time you tell your spouse that you appreciate them, or their actions, you are building more emotional wealth. You can even think of a compliment as a dollar. Imagine how rich you could become if you increase the amount of times per hour you compliment your spouse!

And it’s not just complimenting that works; actions speak louder than words. Helping each other with daily tasks such as shopping for food or just cleaning the house are ways that couples increase their emotional equity with one another. The point is that it doesn’t take a large budget, or a lot of time, to build a relationship. Even the simplest gestures can make a difference in your lives.

The opposite is also true. Couples will deplete their emotional savings by criticizing and exercising external control. Trying to force one another via manipulation or by insulting each other decreases emotional wealth, and can even put some relationships into bankruptcy.

At the end of each month, I suggest

that couples take a look and see how their emotional savings account is developing. They should check how many deposits they’ve made and how much was withdrawn. The goal is to become aware of the overall growth of the relationship and to see if it is getting stronger, or needs more nurturing.

The Miraculous Bamboo TreeOne way to illustrate the need to

invest in the long term sustainability of your marriage is to look at the miraculous growth pattern of the Chinese bamboo tree.

It seems that this tree when planted, watered, and nurtured for an entire growing season doesn’t outwardly grow as much as an inch. Then, after the second growing season, a season in which the farmer takes extra care to water, fertilize and care for the bamboo tree, the tree still hasn’t sprouted. So it goes as the sun rises and sets for four solid years. The farmer and his wife have nothing tangible to show for all of their labor trying to grow the tree.

Then, along comes year five. In the fifth year that Chinese bamboo

tree seed finally sprouts and the bamboo tree grows up to eighty feet in just one growing season! Or so it seems….

Did the little tree lie dormant for four years only to grow exponentially in the fifth? Or, was the little tree growing underground, developing a root system strong enough to support its potential

for outward growth in the fifth year and beyond? The answer is, of course, obvious. Had the tree not developed a strong unseen foundation it could not have sustained its life as it grew. The same principle is true for people. People who patiently toil toward worthwhile dreams and goals, building strong character while overcoming adversity and challenges, grow the strong internal foundation to handle success, while get-rich-quickers and lottery winners usually are unable to sustain unearned sudden wealth.

Had the Chinese bamboo farmer dug up his little seed every year to see if it was growing, he would have stunted the tree’s growth as surely as a caterpillar is doomed to a life on the ground if it is prematurely freed from its struggle inside the cocoon.

Marriage is like a seed that needs planting, watering, weeding and a lot of sunlight. It takes time, effort, patience and skills to make a difference. The challenge facing many couples is that they have not yet learned the practical skills needed to improve their marriage, nor how to invest in their relationship.

So if you’re looking to improve your marriage, here are some which I believe can make a big difference in your lives:

• What have you and your spouse done recently for renewal of your relationship?

When you think of computer repair or data recovery- what comes to mind? It’s probably a man hunched over his desk, typing anxiously on a laptop, in his storeoffice.

And what happens when you slip your iPhone in the bathtub, drop your camera froma3rdfloorbalcony,or thecomputer breaks and you haven’t yet saved those important files,which now, are gone...? You give up.

It’s those pictures of memories you never thought you’d see again, the years work of files youabsolutely needed, it’s that feeling that comes when a wall built with sweat, tears, and energy is gone in one second.

That’s when you turn to Rabbi Akiva Perl, a licensed professional in this one-of-kind field, who recovers what you thoughtwas lost forever, in ways that you’ve never imagined.

Perl grew up outside of the states, in the grand world of the UK. Beginning in his early years, Perl excelled in his science and math classes throughout and held a particular fascination for Electro-Magnetics. “My love for details is ingrained in my DNA.” He enthuses.

Discovered as grossly mechanically inclined by the mere age of 9, when most of his friends were busy with car collections, ball games, and lego structures, Akiva was hunched over the desk of a world class watch repair expert, personally trained to disassemble and reassemble it’s complicated inner parts.

His inspiration led him to grow ever-more tenacious, as he encountered a collectionofGurugeniuses in thefieldof Forensics, which he then pursued.

Almost 30 years later, Perl invites Buzz to explore his in-house lab and offers a rare glimpse into the universe

of a lab technician repair expert, with several degrees in IT, Programming, and Data Forensics in tow.

Actually, we weren’t allowed to go inside his lab, and when we asked him why, were given this riveting response:

This lab, unlike any normal lab, in order to function properly, must be under unique conditions that come with an intricately detailed process.

Known as a ‘Class 100’ or as a ‘Clean Room,’ this room costs upwards of $20,000 to $50,000 just to build. The ‘100’ gets its origins from the fact that no more than 100 particles can exist in each cubic foot of air. In contrast, typical urban air has over 35 million particles of dust floating around per cubic foot of air...so you can only imagine how much effort it takes for even the lab technicians to avoid messing with the oxygen levels confined to it. And just to give you another idea of the purity of this environment, it is ten

times cleaner than the special operating rooms used for heart surgery.

Wow, that’s nothing to sneeze at...how do you upkeep the air to those conditions...does it really entail not letting anyone just a peak, for a second?

Trust me, even I don’t go in there, unless I am actually working on physical repair damage. And even when I go in, I must be covered from head to toe in a Head Cover, Mask, Scrubs, Latex Powder free gloves, and Medical shoes. This is for the prevention of accumulative hydrogen, magnetic or static material from infiltrating the pure air we work so hard to maintain.

We maintain this pure air with a system of HEPA (High-efficiency Particulate Air) filters which are used to trap the

unwanted particles into their structures, from their surroundings.

To take extra precaution, we are not permitted inside unless the HEPA’s have done their job to the fullest, in which case a sensor has a green light switched on, giving us the go-ahead to enter. Even after all this, though, we are enormously limited to moving painfully slow, and not bringing any food, personal gadgets, or, well, anything into the lab with us. Plus, a job in there typically takes about 2-4 days to accomplish and is done is intervals of roughly 5 consecutive hours each.

It sounds like you have a lot of patience...and what do you mean exactly when you say ‘particle’?

Some examples of these unclean, static or magnetic particles include asbestos, rust, sediment, dirt, and scale as small as 0.2 microns- that’s just 1/300th of a

diameter of a human hair...

What is the actual process of repair, and how does the particle count affect your work?

We take whatever damaged item it is, be it a laptop, camera, or iPod, and work with the hard drive. Our machinery has the needle on the drive read the binary codes that

makeup all the info stored. In a situation of a broken needle, the replacement needle, (plus the arm attached), which is needed in order to read all the lost data, is purchased at $950 a pop. The readings are sensitive to particles because the needle that reads the information does not and cannot touch the actual drive, but does it by receiving messages through air, which must be clean to allow the sensitive energetic information to travel and translate clearly. Hence the class 100 room environment necessary.

But how can a simple needle be so expensive? It’s just a tiny stick of metal! Is it not?

Well, it’s really not so simple. The space between the needle and drive is ten times thinner than the average diameter of your hair. This distance that it reads the drive at is at an exact vantage point of .09 Microns. For someone who enjoys Algebra and Geometry even at it’s highest levels, the calculations can be a grueling and arduous process, although, I truly enjoy it.

What else is this hard-drive made up of?

There is the Case, the Spindle, the Head Slider, Disks, Voice Coil Motor, and Electronics.

What if there is just some virus on my computer that causes things to get deleted, but I never actually damaged it physically?

That kind of damage- unlike fire, water, or dropping, is what we call ‘Logical Damage.’ We repair that as well but it doesn’t require the use of the clean room because the lab is a physical fix, and this kind of damage is in the

brain of the computer, rather than the body of it as well.

I’ll give you an example of this: A girl once came to me distraught because she had just deleted the photos on her friend’s camera. Baruch Hashem we recovered those photos because the result was a friendship preserved.

A more extreme case was a woman who frantically told me that she’d written an entire book and that parts of it that hadn’t been emailed to publishers yet, including the index. Her computer suddenly crashed and her work was gone.

We were able to retrieve all her important files for her book that is now published, index and all.

A girl’s school in Boro Park had a hard-drive crash. It wouldn’t have been such a desperate situation, had it not been the fact that the school year was about to begin and the QuickBooks file, complete with all the tuition details, was lost, and manually entering the statements just wouldn’t do. It inspires me that I can use my skill to recover such crucial files that give people that great sense of relief.

There was the renowned Rabbi who’d been recorded by his friend for a good two years, every day, for a half hour each. The digital recorder simply stopped working, just like that.

A Kolel Yungerman who frantically rung me up (they all do that!) due to a computer crash that had no backup, and had been his tool for nine years worth of writing his chiddushei torah, was given his files fully recovered. Recovering all those inspirational classes has really given me nachas.

That sounds surreal for the person who never thought they’d see their precious data again. Do you have any examples of the ones who have damaged their devices on a physical scale?

Sure. In fact, a pretty humorous situation ensued lately. A father took his child, his, iPad, and of course his chometz to go and prepare his fire for biur chometz. It was that time of Erev Pesach rush, and he mistakenly threw his iPad into the scorching flames. To add insult to the injury, the firemen on premises soaked the fire out with water, further damaging the already burnt iPad. After dealing with this shriveled piece in the class 100 lab, all the cherished photos of their children are now back in view. You’d be surprised to learn that the water damage was more extensive then the damage

caused by the fire!

Sometimes people need these types ofproofs inacourtcasebuttheirfilesare obstructed. Have you dealt with anyone in those circumstances?

I’ve had to appear in court several times to use my expertise in part of the proceedings as proof. In one particular criminal case we’ve dealt with, where the defendant was not allowed to be in a certain area, a Photo was

produced in court. The photo showed that the defendant was ‘in fact’ at that certain bar, with a certain individual. After much Lab work and analysis, it was shown, that the defendant in the photo was taken from a different camera than the other individual. The lighting differed as well, and the pixel density was way off, clearing the way for the defendant to press charges of defamation of character, from this photo-shopped picture.

The recovery data process was called for in another court proceeding for entirely different purposes too. It was a Matrimonial Case, and the stenographer’s crucial data from

court proceedings was rendered unreadable as it was encrypted, which means that the codes used to read the data were distorted. We read the binary code which is the foundation code underneath all the other code layers, allowing for all the data to be retrieved.

What are the general different types of situations that necessitate the use of your Data Recovery Lab?

We’ve done these recovery processes for all different types of Businesses, personal homes, Attorneys, Private Investigators, FBI, Federal, and even State and City Courts. And actually, as a side hobby, if you will, I am also a shadchan. To the people who know me as their matchmaker, I’m simply Rabbi Perl, no technical strings attached.

A shadchan too? Can you elaborate on what some of these other jobs entail?

I greatly enjoy the shadchan responsibilities and although requiring many extra hours, it is extremely rewarding to help another find their life-partner. Being no stranger to patient-necessitating jobs, I’m certainly at an advantage.

With Summer time just around the corner, you can finally start to take

out that grill and get to planning that family BBQ. But everyone knows how

to make hot dogs and hamburgers. These Heaven Honey Chicken Kabobs

will be our secret.

Ingredients:

(makes 12 servings)• 1/4 cup vegetable oil • 1/3 cup honey • 1/3 cup soy sauce • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper • 8 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut into 1 inch cubes • 2 cloves garlic • 5 small onions, cut into 2 inch pieces • 2 red bell peppers, cut into 2 inch pieces

Directions:

In a large bowl, whisk together the oil, honey, soy sauce, and pepper. Before adding chicken, reserve a small amount of marinade to brush onto the kabobs while cooking. Place the chicken, garlic, onions and peppers in the bowl, and marinate in the refrigerator at least 2 hours (the longer the better).Preheat the grill for a high heat result.Drain the marinade from the chicken and vegetables, and then set the marinade aside. Thread the chicken and vegetables alternately onto the skewers.You are ready to lightly oil the grill grate. Now place those skewers onto the grill. Let it cook for 12 to 15 minutes, until the chicken juices run clear. Turn them and frequently brush it down with the reserved marinade.

Ingredients:1 unbaked pie crust, recipe follows* 1 1/2 cups cooked, peeled and mashed sweet potatoes1 heaping teaspoon all-purpose flour1 cup milk (canned, half and half, cream or whole milk)1 cup sugar3 egg yolks1 teaspoon vanilla1 teaspoon ground nutmeg2 tablespoons margarine, melted

Directions:Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.Roll out 1 pie crust and place it in a pie plate. Mix all of the remaining ingredients together and pour it into the unbaked pie crust. Bake your creation for 45 minutes or until the pie is firm. Allow it to cool completely.

*Note: This filling is for 1 pie crust. The remaining 3 crusts

can be used for other pies or frozen.

Pie Crust:4 cups all-purpose flour1 3/4 cups shortening (butter flavored)2 teaspoons salt1 tablespoon sugar1 large egg1/2 cup water1 tablespoon white vinegar

Mix the flour, shortening, salt and sugar together with a pastry blender until it is well blended. Slightly beat in the egg, water and vinegar together with a whisk and pour over the well-blended flour mixture. Mix all your ingredients to-gether with a fork. Divide the crust into 4 equal parts. Roll each with a rolling pin and place into 4 pie pans. Flute the crust’s edges. Dig in!
