Housing in the city centre is a problematic topic in the Czech Rep. While new single family houses are been constructed on the outskirts, the centre dies slowly away.

The city of Liberec (CZ) is lacking of attractive living possibilities in the centre. Due to that there is an exodus out from the city.This project tries to give an alternative to single family housing.

The whole building is designed in such a manner that it would be nice to live in, but also that it would have a positive impact on its surroundings. It is divided in three parts, so an access to the adjacent river and to a new park can be created. Therefore the building consists of three solids which are erected on a shared subterranean parking.The ground floor is used for services and the upper floors for living. A total of 14 flats of different sizes are created. All living rooms are south oriented, facing the river bank and the park.

CASE STUDY - HEAT AND POWER PLANT RELOCATION

The basic idea was to start a cooperation between the city Liberec (about 100 000 inhabitants) and the Faculty of architecture in Liberec. The aim was to look in a more complex manner and from a different angel on the problems the city is dealing with.

While working on the project a new land use plan for Liberec has been discussed in the city. A rigid tool without any perspective. This project tried to visualize broader connections within the city.A total of 13 students in 5 teams were working on this project.

LIBEREC CITY vision

Our team of 4 created a proposal called ROZ-HRANÍ (interface), which was trying to unite the broken state of Liberec. The basic principles were: The connection of existing green spaces and by that creating a East-West Green connection, to make the city more livable.The relocation of a heat and power plant (nowadays located right in the centre).The strengthening of the existing polycentric character of the city and the connection of those centres.

We didn’t develop a vision, but we have showed a certain direction that we believe would be of use for the city.

IMOV LANAZROTE is a project looking for an opinion about how to treat a valuable region that is massively influenced by tourism.

This project is based on a international student competition with the goal to create a proposal for a international museum of volcanoes on Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain).Lanzarote is strongly marked by volcanic activities. The surface of the whole island has been totally changed by massive volcanic eruptions in the 17th century.

The site itself is located in the hearth of the Timanfaya National Park, which by its appearance and loneliness looks more like the moonscape, then a place on earth.The structure reacts on this and is located in the direct neighbourhood of the biggest crater in the NP. The entrance “leg” is located outside of the crater, the other end hoovers over the volcano. The building allows this way to experience the volcano directly and since it is on the axes of various craters, offers as well a breath-taking view.

As a part of the project a 3x5m contour line concrete model was created.

On observation towers are always crowded at the base an at the top. The idea was to create a rather large base and top, so everyone could stay how long he would like.

Pekelský vrch (Hell hill) in the Jizera mountains is a border point. On one side you see the Frýdlantské cimbuří (a steep hill formation), on the other nearly endless plains going to the north, to Germany and Poland.Today such a view isn’t possible. The peak on which once an amphitheatre and a dancing place were located is nowadays covered with high trees.

The idea was to create an observation tower that would make this view possible and would respect the needs of the visitors. Therefore the bottom as well as the top of the structure are amplified. The bottom to create shelter, the top to offer enough space for the visitors, so they can look out as long as they want.The middle part serves in this case just as a communication between those, so it is narrowed.

A villa just outside the city, that would fit in the mountainous character of the region.

The villa is located on a steep slope not far from the city Liberec, but with a marvellous look over the city. Since it was designed for a car-lover a large garage had to be part of the program.

The basic idea behind the concept and the form was to design a continuos surface on which you could walk like when your hiking up a mountain. This way the natural inclination of the place would be respected.

Under this grass covered shell the live of the family would take place with the possibility to walk out of the building directly in to the nature on each floor.

The Venice architectural Biennale offers a wide range of outstanding projects. How do you make yourself visible in such an environment?

The aim of this project was to find a cheap way to make the Czech pavilion on the Venice Architecture Biennale 2010 visible.

The idea was to get the Czech exhibition designed by the studio e-mrak (Martin Rajniš) on the streets of Venice. Since the whole exhibition was made of wood, wood would be a suitable material.The advertising for the czech pavilion would be the visitors them self. On the entrance to Venice, f.e. the train station, wooden laths of the length of 1, 2 and 3 meters would be handed out. Those, who would bring the laths in to the Czech pavilion, would be regarded.The city would be this way full of large scale wooden flyers.

Far away from standardized man and typologies - how to create an inhabitable space for Siamese twins connected with their heads? The challenge is that one is average high, the other dwarfish.

The goal was to create a space where two Siamese twins connected with their heads could live.Due to there different height their movement is strongly limited. The only place they can move freely is in the water.

A house designed completely from the inside to the outside with the focus to make it possible for the twins to move around freely.The centre of the building is formed by a rotating elevator, through which all parts of the house are accessible. In all parts there are two levels, so both of the twins can walk together but on their own.

A footbridge connecting the Prague castle and a renaissance villa on the other side of a 30m deep valley. The goal was to connect, but not to rule the surroundings.

The idea behind this project was to create a footbridge in the direct neighbourhood of the Prague castle that would connect one entrance in to the castle with a renaissance villa located on the other side of a 30 m deep valley called Jelení příkop (deer jump). To respect the unique atmosphere of the valley, which located in the centre of Prague forms an oasis of calmness, is the footbridge designed without any supporting structures touching the valley. So the only points the bridge is connected to the ground are the entrance points and the anchors of the supporting cables.To get a slight catenary for the supporting cables the entrance to the bridge itself is formed by a small valley, which continues along the whole length in the form of slightly inclined handrail made of wooden laths.

The bridge isn’t that way interrupting the peace of the valley and isn’t forming a new dominant next to the Prague castle.

A simple lamp - not too large, not too small that could be used in a variety of situation.

The goal was to design a lamp that would suit the needs of a student. The design respects 3 main needs a student can possibly have:

1) direct lighting for work2) indirect lighting for relaxation3) low cost.

A lamp made out of a common kitchen grater respects all above mentioned and is as well an interesting interior decoration.Through the grater an interesting ornament like light is created, while when the bottom part opened direct lighting streams out.
