GenreA genre of a book means the class or category that a book is placed in to. This is based on many aspects like:

• Characters• Setting• Theme• Storyline

Picking a genre for a book can be done either before creating the book or after it is created. The genre of the book sets it off from others and gives readers a glimpse into what might actually happen.

How to Pick a Genre

It is important to understand the different genres in order to pick the correct category that a book belongs to. For instance a book with an animal talking would not be considered realistic fiction because obviously, animals do not talk and that could not happen.

It is easiest to write a story first and get all you ideas down on paper. Once the story is written then you can go back and analyze the story to place it in the appropriate genre category,

Non Fiction Realistic Fiction Fantasy

The non fictions genre is considered to be anything that is believed to be true. Non fiction can different because people have different opinions and so people may believe different things.

Some types of books or writing considered to be non fiction include:

•Textbooks•Biographies•Histories•Factual Book•Journalism

•News Papers•Magazines

Fiction is considered untrue, but it is something that could actually happen. Some of the people, places, and events may be real. In realistic fiction, the reader believes something is actually happening, or could actually happen.

Elements of the non fictions genre include:

• Plot• Foreshadowing• Rising Action• Climax• Falling Action• Conflict

Fantasy usually uses magic or a super natural phenomenon are the primary element in the story. Many of these books take place in fictional worlds where magic takes place.

Types of subgenres in the fantasy genre include:

• High Fantasy• Epic Fantasy• Fairytale• Fable• Historical Fantasy• Gothic Fantasy
