Boeing Tower Today

Boeing Field, officially King County

International Airport (KBFI), is a two-

runway airport owned and run by King

County, Washington, USA. In

promotional literature, the airport is

frequently referred to as KCIA, but this

is not the airport identifier. The airport

has some passenger service, but is mostly

used by general aviation and cargo. It is

named after the founder of the Boeing

Company, William E. Boeing.

Being south of the city, it is named

Boeing Field because of the Boeing

Airplane Company’s proximity and

because Boeing’s Pacific Air Transport

(later United Airlines ) used it for regular

airmail service. It was Seattle’s principle

passenger airport until the construction

of Seattle- Tacoma International Airport

in the 1940’s.

The airport serves small commercial passenger airlines, cargo carriers, private aircraft

owners, helicopters, corporate jets, and military and other aircraft. It is also home to the

Boeing Company’s 737 aircraft flight-test program, along with the other Boeing

operations.

History of Boeing Field Tower

1928: King County voters approved a $950,000 plan for the construction of the

region’s first municipal airport.

1930: The terminal and administration buildings were completed.

1941: Airport was devoted to the

production thousands of B-17 and B-29 bombers.

1954: Commercial aviation history was made as the Boeing 707 “Dash 80” prototype made its maiden flight from the Renton Boeing plant to Boeing Field.
