Director’s Notes
From its roots way back in Roman comedy, up through Shakespeare and Moliere, all the
way up to today, audiences have always loved a good romantic farce, the kind of comedy
where we get to watch two hours of total chaos (full of complications, deceptions, and, of
course, doors slamming) and where, somehow, everything gets worked out by the end of
the second act. Boeing Boeing fits right in with that long and illustrious tradition.
Bernard, our central bachelor, plays both the young lover and the total knave. As the play
opens, he is juggling three women — all airlines stewardess and all his fiancés (yes, you
read that right). Everything seems to be going well. But what’s a farce without comical
mayhem? As the day unfolds, crisis after crisis arises as the stewardesses (Gloria, Gabriella,
and Gretchen) come and go – and not according to their prescribed timetable, the
required mathematical precision where everything is “designed, organized, regulated,
and working to the precise second. . . . So precise as to almost be poetic.” When all is
going well, their flight schedules have two of them out of town when the third is in Paris.
But when all is not going well…..
So, is Bernard exemplifying immoral behavior or just personifying the new norm of an
evolving, looser society? He sees no harm in it. As he explains, “They all think they’re
the only one. They don’t think it’s immoral, so why should I?” Besides, he is not taking
advantage of any of them because he adores each of them, spoiling them equally.
Bernard is joined by an old school friend, Robert (traveling abroad from his quieter and
less complicated world in Wisconsin). At first, Robert seems shocked and bewildered, but
eventually he becomes not just an admiring spectator but an active participant, helping
to save Bernard as his paradise begins to crumble around him: flights being delayed,
schedules being changed, and rooms being occupied by the wrong people. Robert’s
initial disapproval of Bernard’s lifestyle turns to admiration, acceptance, and finally a
desire to imitate Bernard as he toys with the idea of acquiring a Paris flat and furnishing it
with three stewardesses of his own: from Rio De Janeiro, Japan, and Sweden.
Ultimately, the play has a happy ending. Deceptions are forgiven, confusions resolved,
and each lady finds her singular gent; society is once again in balance and life is good.

Calamity Jane by Charles K. Freeman
Directed by Susan Nanning-Sorenson
November 11, 12, 17, 18 19, 2016
In the wild-west outpost of Deadwood City, 1876, we find the
sharpshooting tomboy, Calamity Jane surrounded by cowboys,
townsfolk, and the famous Wild Bill Hickok. After a mix-up in the
talent pool at Deadwood’s saloon-theater, Calam goes to Chicago
to import to Deadwood the glamorous actress, Adelaid Adams, but
returns by mistake with her maid, Katie Brown instead.
Agatha Christie’s A Murder is Announced
adapted by Leslie Darbon
Directed by Jeanne Leep
February 24, 25, March 3, 4, 2017
An announcement in the local paper states the time and place
when a murder is to occur in Miss Blacklock’s Victorian house.
The victim is not one of the houses several occupants, but an
unexpected and unknown visitor. What follows is a classic Christie
puzzle of mixed motives, concealed identities, a second death, and
a determined inspector grimly following the twist and turns.
