Greetings BSA Members,
While the weather outside has
been frightful and March came
in like a lion, at last we can look
forward to saying Hello Spring!
Spring is a time to grow and
bloom, to embrace the beauty
and value of all living things, to
nurture the work of the BSA
through volunteering. If you
have not had the opportunity to
join in our valued work, there
are many opportunities.
Orchkids 10thAnniversary
Celebratory Parties, 41st
Symphony Designers Show
House, Family Concert
Luncheons, the BSO Musician
Appreciation Luncheon,
Education Concert Ushering
opportunities and the new BSA
Spring Fling luncheon and
Fashion Show are just a few of
our upcoming activities. Pick
one you think you’d like to
participate in or help with and
contact our BSA Office
Manager, Vikki McAdory,
[email protected]. She
will happily put you in touch
with the chair or coordinator of
that project. The feeling you
get from volunteering is like no
other – a sense of gratification
in the knowledge that you are helping so many
others by contributing to the success of our events.
Please consider giving your time and support. And
look for your invitation to volunteer in your email
box soon.
Come join us at our BSA March Membership Dinner
Meeting at 5 PM on Wednesday March 14 at the
Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. In addition, our
Music Adventures Meet and Learn sessions are
scheduled for four Tuesdays: March 13th, April

January Membership Meeting
The snow postponed our January General Membership Meeting but a week’s delay didn’t dampen the spirits of our attendees or our guest speaker. The meeting was rescheduled from Wednesday, January 17 to Wednesday, January 24. Our guest speaker, Dr. David Hildebrand, Director, The Colonial Music Institute and co-author of "Musical Maryland" is a specialist in Early American music who not only speaks but also performs. Dr. Hildebrand delivered a very interesting power point presentation and entertained us with song and a Baroque guitar performance. It was a thoroughly delightful afternoon. Dr. Hildebrand also had a book signing and donated 10% of the sales of "Musical Maryland" to the BSA. His book, with co-author Elizabeth Schaaf, is the first comprehensive survey of music from our Old Line State.

Holiday Happenings
GIFT BAGS
Once again, Helene Breazeale's two grandsons went with her to do all the shopping for the holiday gift bags for the BSO musicians. Once home, the boys did all the sorting and stuffing of the 100 gift bags. On January 8 they delivered the bags to the Meyerhoff and the thoughtful gifts were well-appreciated by our BSO musicians.
Andrew (l) and Brandon Brazeale prepared colorful holiday gift bags
which were very much appreciated by the BSO musician.
ORCH KIDS CONCERT
On December 14, the OrchKids put on a holiday concert
at the Central Baptist Church in West Baltimore.
Families, friends and church members filled the chapel
to capacity. One of the concert highlights was the
Bucket Band where the OrchKids drum on upside down
utility buckets in a percussive whirl. After the 5 PM
concert, hungry OrchKids and guests enjoyed a ‘light
bite and dessert’ spread served by the BSA.
.
PHOTO BOOTH PROJECT
Under the chairmanship of Jean Hartlove, BSA volunteers ran a successful ‘Photos with Santa’ project this past holiday season. Working a total of seven performances from the Family Concert on December 9 to Holiday concerts on the weekends of December 16 and 23, 272 photos were taken by photographer Tracy Parron. We appreciate our volunteer Santas from the BSO and staff who contributed their time to this worthwhile and fun project. And an added bonus – once the photos were finished, BSA volunteers were given free tickets to attend those holiday concerts!
Photo project volunteers Randy Jacobs, Valerie Grindrod (BSA
friend), Chair Jean Hartlove and Joan Locke strike a pose in the
beautiful Santa seat.

Musical Programs for
All Ages The BSO offers a variety of educational and fun
musical programs and the BSA assists with all of
those through helping to set up, usher where needed
and serving. Some of our members are passionate
about this aspect of music education and have been
dedicated ushers and event assistants for many
years. These events include the Music Box series for
tiny tots and their parents as well as Family Concerts.
The Music Box series consists of half-hour lobby
concerts that feature the musical talents of a small
ensemble of BSO musicians performing classical and
children's songs to develop musicality, creativity,
coordination and literacy. Thirty minutes prior to the
concert the lobby fills with a range of musical,
creative and fun activities for babies and
families. Upcoming Family Concerts this spring
include a St Patrick’s Celebration on March 10 and a
dance-focused concert called ‘Ballet to Flamenco’ on
April 14. Family concerts are followed by luncheons
which are set up and served by a dedicated crew of
BSA volunteers and each child gets a surprise gift.
Additionally, the BSO Side by Side program offers
high school students from select counties the
opportunity to rehearse and perform with BSO
musicians. The students come from Anne Arundel
County, Howard County, Baltimore County and
Baltimore City and BSA volunteers greet the buses an
usher the students.
In December volunteers covered the full variety of
programs for which our services were
needed. Events ranged in size and complexity from
on-stage-rehearsals, open rehearsals, mid-week,
side-by-side, Music Box and Family performances at
the Hall and the BSYO at the Carver Center. We even
had one event at capacity and managed to "squeeze
in" additional patrons when one school showed up
with more students. In January we covered an
education open rehearsal which we are delighted to
report was sold out as well as a patron only open
rehearsal. Subscriptions for the upcoming mid-week
programs are well ahead of last year's numbers so we
are expecting close to full houses for them.
The end of February mid-week concerts were a great
success and played to "full houses" which meant our
volunteer ushers had a full work-out.
Very talented young musicians are featured in two
major events. On March 13th students enrolled in
Baltimore County Public Schools who have been
selected after extensive auditions will be playing side-
by-side with the BSO in a concert. Then, on March
18th the Baltimore Symphony Youth
Orchestra (BSYO) will present two concerts at the
Carver Center for the Arts in Towson. Join us for
these events and enjoy and marvel at the very
talented young musicians in our area.
At the conclusion of each performance the children
are invited to talk with the BSO musicians and
examine "up close" the featured instruments.

The season for mid-week concerts will conclude with
two days of performances in April, each of which will
be followed by a thank you luncheon for our
volunteer ushers. Join us, enjoy great music and
foster our future audiences.

2018 League of American Orchestras National Conference
Chicago June 13-15, 2018
Each year the League of American Orchestras
holds a National Conference in which the
Volunteer Council is a very active participant.
The mission of the Council is to advance the
experience of orchestral music, support the
people and organizations that create it, and
champion the contributions orchestras make to
the health and vibrancy of communities. This
year’s conference is in Chicago from June 12-15
and BSA members are invited to attend. In
addition to good music, great food and
interesting sightseeing, eight award-winning
fundraising projects by symphony auxiliaries
from all over the country will be presented to
give attendees ideas to bring back to their own
organizations. Some of the Conference
highlights include:
Hotel and Sightseeing
The beautiful, historic Palmer House, a Hilton
hotel just off Michigan Avenue, will host both
lodging and Conference sessions. Its location is
an easy walk to notable sights such as
Millennium Park, Symphony Center, the Art
Institute, the theater district, restaurants, and
shops.
Concerts
Highlights include a performance of the world-
class Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the
direction of internationally acclaimed Maestro
Riccardo Muti. The concert will feature special
guest artist Yo-Yo Ma performing Shostakovich
Cello Concerto No. 2.
Anthony McGill (Principal Clarinet, New York
Philharmonic) and Demarre McGill (Principal
Flute, Seattle Symphony) will perform a double
concerto with the Chicago Youth Symphony
Orchestras, conducted by Allen Tinkham, Music
Director.
You won't want to miss Artistic Director and
Principal Conductor Carlos Kalmar, Chorus
Director Christopher Bell, and the Grant Park
Orchestra and Chorus for opening night of the
Grant Park Music Festival 2018 season in the
Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion in
Millennium Park.
Essential Learning for Volunteers
The Volunteer Council is planning stimulating
Gold Book and Roundtable award presentations
pertinent to BSA efforts in reaching diverse and
under-served communities, and implementing
new fundraising and new member strategies.
You will have time to compare notes while
networking with fellow volunteers. In addition to
volunteer sessions, you can attend the League's
many elective offerings.
Online registration for the Conference will open
in late February/early March 2018, but you may
reserve your hotel room now at
https://aws.passkey.com/go/2018LAO

OrchKids will be celebrating its 10th anniversary
this spring so it is a most appropriate time to
focus on Joy Munster, who most of us know as
the dedicated volunteer leader behind the
OrchKids Program. Ten years ago when
OrchKids was just a gleam in Maestra Marin
Alsop’s eye, Joy responded to an article in the
Sunpaper about this new program to find out
how she could help…and she hasn’t stopped
helping for ten years! She makes sure there are
refreshments and a nicely set ‘goodies buffet’ for
the OrchKids and their families at every concert,
traveling with other volunteers to schools and
churches around Baltimore City. Being around
the kids keeps Joy very young at heart!
Joy hails from England and wound up in
Baltimore when her late husband Dr Andrew
Munster was recruited by John Hopkins Bayview
to build the noted Burn Unit there. Joy was also
in health care, having been a nurse for more
than 50 years. She and Andrew were very active
supporters of the fledgling Charleston Symphony
Orchestra and after moving to Baltimore, it was a
natural move as music lovers to align with the
BSO. In addition to supporting OrchKids
activities, Joy also regularly buys instruments for
the OrchKids and has housed musicians from all
over the world who come to Baltimore to teach
and work with OrchKids. Joy has been an active
member of the BSA since 1976 and a board
member for at least 25 years. Her other outside
interests include the theater at various venues in
Baltimore City and working out at the gym. She
needs to stay in shape so she can continue
running all around Baltimore City to nourish the
OrchKids, both literally and figuratively!
COMING UP: ORCHKIDS CONCERT
There will be an OrchKids Concert and Reception
on Thursday March 15 at the Lockerman Bundy
School. The BSA needs your contribution of
cookies, cupcakes, paper products and dollars!
250 attendees are expected. Anyone wishing to
go is welcome to attend. If you are interested in
contributing or helping to serve, contact the BSA
office ([email protected] or
410.783.8023).

Do You Have an Occasion to Celebrate or
Recognize? The Perfect Solution…
BSA ALL OCCASION CONTRIBUTION CARDS
BSA General Fund
Libby Younglove Education Fund Baker’s Dozen (13) cards for $30. Cards are available at all BSA meetings and events. For more information contact the BSA
office at [email protected] or 410.783.8023.
BSA STORE
The BSA Store at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall is
open at most concerts and we need volunteers
to help staff it. If you enjoy helping customers
and would be able to volunteer a few hours for
this excellent source of funds (and can resist
buying all the jewelry), please contact the office
([email protected] or 410.783.8023) and
Vikki will put you in touch with Larry Albrecht, VP
of the Symphony Store.
THE POWER OF ASK
Research has shown that many people don’t
volunteer simply because they aren’t asked.
Let’s put that to use and start asking – your
friends and family, neighbors, coworkers,
professional associates. Tell them about the
wonderful work that the BSA does and ask them
to not only support our efforts but also to join us
in this most worthwhile endeavor.
If you know someone who might be interested in
joining the BSA, contact the BSA Office Manager
([email protected] or 410.783.8023).
She will be happy to send them an information
packet and membership form. The more
members we have, the more we can do to
support the BSO!
Just Ask!
