Dear Members,

On behalf of the Tucson Chapter of Brandeis National Committee, we welcome you to the 2017–18 year.

We hope your participation in Study Groups will be an educational and social way to learn and to enjoy your membership. It also can help you connect with the community and give back to Brandeis. In addition to Study Groups, there are many opportunities to enjoy being a Tucson BNC member. We offer many ways to engage in a variety of activities to help fund-raise, learn, and form lasting friendships.

We welcome your participating in our open board meetings, donating books, helping at our Book Depot, contributing to our community service programs, attending entertaining and enjoyable luncheons, and other activities throughout the year.

While having fun, you are supporting the philanthropic needs of Brandeis University, the only nonsectarian university in America that was created by the American Jewish community.

Thanks so much for the hard work of the Study Group Committee, who have given us the interesting, educational, cultural, and exciting Study Groups listed here. They are terrific!

We look forward to meeting and welcoming you. Enjoy!

Brandeis University Facts

Brandeis University Today: Founded in 1948 in the Boston suburb of Waltham, Brandeis is recognized as the premier small research university in the United States. It is named for Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856–1941), the distinguished Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

This nonsectarian university founded by the American Jewish community has over 9,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Brandeis has been ranked sixth in the nation in the biological sciences, has the most-comprehensive program of Judaic studies outside the State of Israel, and offers America’s first Israel Studies program. Brandeis today enrolls a diverse student body, drawn from most states and 100 countries. The student-to-faculty ratio is about 10:1.

The Brandeis National Committee (BNC)was founded to provide philanthropic support and growth for the university and its libraries. Since 1948, its members have contributed over one hundred million dollars to build and sustain four libraries on the Brandeis campus. In 1998, the millionth book was placed on the shelves and two and one-half million dollars were raised to establish an endowed Brandeis University Librarian’s Chair. Membership in the BNC offers opportunities for intellectual pursuit, continuing education, local social justice (community service), social interaction, personal enrichment, and leadership development. Today, the BNC has reaffirmed its commitment to the libraries and added its support to the BNC fundraising project, the BNC Scholarship Campaign. Our four pillars are academic excellence, social justice, nonsectarianism, and service to the community.

REGISTER TODAY FOR YOURLIFELONG LEARNING PROGRAM

We have a NEW registration procedure. This year, our courses will start in October, wherever possible. You may mail your registration form to the Registrar TODAY. The form should be received by Terrie Sherman by August 31, 2017. On September 5, 2017, we will begin finalizing our course attendee member lists. By September 11, 2017, all members will be notified by the group leader of their enrollment in courses.

To join a Study Group, you must be a paid-up member of BNC. Men and women are eligible. Paid-up members or guests may visit any one course once if the course has three or more sessions. THE FACILITATOR MUST BE CALLED TO SEE IF SPACE IS AVAILABLE. The membership and course fees must be paid to continue attending.

You must pay the specified $18 fee for each course as listed in this catalog. This pays for all sessions of ONE course.

Refunds are allowed PRIOR to the SECOND course meeting only or if the course is canceled or oversubscribed (contact Terrie Sherman).

For Study Groups that are oversubscribed, the course acceptance will be determined by random selection.

Groups will meet as indicated in the catalog, unless you have been notified otherwise.

For courtesy and course-planning purposes, enrollees MUST notify the leader if they are unable to attend a session. By your registration for a course, you are committing to regular attendance.

You must register by mail by using the form in this booklet or a copy of it.

The Study Group chairs reserve the right, based on enrollment, to add additional sections or cancel courses. You will be notified if this occurs.

If you are hesitant to register because of questions you have, contact the facilitator, who will get in touch with you.

If you make a reservation for a function that requires a fee, you will be responsible for that fee, whether or not you attend.

If you have suggestions for future groups, would like to share your ex-pertise, can volunteer your home, or have any questions about these courses, please contact:

LYNN CRAMER, [email protected] or 717-443-6157.
