Happy New Year!

With the new year comes a new and exciting venture for us. We’re pleased and very proud to introduce our new baby; www.bn5magazine.co.uk. It’s been a long time coming (yes, we know...) partly down to my inability to make decisions and partly because BN5 and thirteen8 magazine keep us so busy! But now we’ve taken a deep breath and jumped in. We’re very happy with what Richard Brooks and his team at Proworx have created for us.

Our mantra from the outset has been simplicity, simplicity, simplicity. During development we’ve put a few bells and whistles in, then promptly taken them out when we realised they detract from the most important function - fast, up to date info in a really user-friendly and colourful format.

Please take a look at page 24 to find out more, but most importantly please go to www.bn5magazine.co.uk and let us know what you think. We’d welcome any feedback to help us improve and grow the site. Just as BN5 magazine is, we want bn5magazine.co.uk to be the first place you go for everything Henfield.

We wish you all a happy and healthy 2014. Thank you all for reading the magazine, supporting our advertisers and contributing to BN5 throughout the year. We couldn’t do it without you.

Best wishes

STEYNING STUDENTS ‘JAIL BREAK’ FUNDRAISEROn Friday 6 December 200 Year 13 students ‘es-caped’ from Steyning Grammar School in a fundrais-ing jail break. A massive £4,600 was raised this year for the students chosen charity, Cancer Research UK. The event started with a hearty breakfast kindly do-nated by a local catering company ‘3663’, with the £1.50 charge for breakfast making a great start to the fundraising activities. The student ‘convicts’ broke out of their jails just before 9am to the cheers of fel-low students, dashing to their brightly decorated ‘get away’ vehicles. These included large tractors and trailers, scaffolding lorries, buses, pick-up trucks, bi-cycles and space hoppers that made their way in con-voy up Steyning High Street. The convicts included a band of Mexicans, Indians, a collection of animal from Noah’s Arch, several Father Christmases, Reindeer, Elves, Wizards, Sumo Wrestlers, Harlequins, Doctor Who and a group of Super Heroes, all collecting, wav-ing and cheering as they went. Jessica Blake, Local Fundraising Manager from Can-cer Research UK who was present on the day said “I am so impressed by the organisation and hard work that has gone into this event, it’s so fantastic to see such enthusiasm from both students and staff. Thank you so much to the team behind this great fundrais-ing effort.” Mrs Sally Randall, Assistant Headteacher KS5, at Steyning Grammar School expressed how proud the staff, governors and parents were of the Year 13 students: “Our students have shown initiative, commitment and determination in making a positive difference to others through fundraising, and they have learned so much from this experience.” The school and students would like to thank Horsham District Council for again allowing them to host the event in the town and for their assistance with ar-rangements for parking fundraisers vehicles. They would also like to thank C&L coaches who very kindly donated the use of a coach for the event. The school is particularly grateful for the continued support of the Sussex Police in assisting with the recapture of the convicts in Horsham, the generosity of the public for and the events many sponsors (including C&L Coach-es, Huddlestone Farm, Penfold Verrall, ST Cowley and Spratt & Son). If you would like to contribute to-wards this effort please visit our ‘Just Giving Page’ www.justgiving.com/Catherine-Mc-Donald-Bowyer.

HENFIELD MUSEUMI don’t wear a deerstalker, but I do use a magnifying glass. I am the Dress De-tective and I am working on The Case of the Black Velvet Dress. In BN5 last year there was a photograph and a few words about a silver beaded cocktail frock. The subject of my enquiries today is the very elegant younger sister of that short and sparkly 1920s LBD. Exhibit ‘A’; a sophisticated floor length c1950s evening gown. This dress is classic evening wear, fashioned in black panne velvet, with dainty straps and a sweetheart neckline. The bodice and one hip are sprinkled with iridescent beads styled as flowers and leaves. Close inspection of the way the dress is made (both machine and hand stitching are in evidence) leads me to conclude that the dress is bespoke. There are two underskirts. One is full length, whilst the second is attached to the first at hip level and ends in a deep frill. They are made of linen, which gives the dress a bell shaped fullness but makes it very heavy. Thanks to Alan, the curator, I know that this dress was donated to Henfield museum in 1998 and that it had belonged to the late Miss Vera Owen. I believe that she was involved with the Conservative Association and worked with the Royal Over-Seas League. Of the remainder of her life, I know very little. Does anyone have memories that might help with my enquiries? Was the dress made for a special occasion? Was it a faithful standby for formal occasions? The dress is currently on display in the museum. So if you would like to see exhibit ‘A’ for yourself and perhaps have your memory jogged, go along to Henfield museum. Deerstalker optional. If you have any information, please email [email protected] Stephanie Richards

WOODMANCOTE PARISH COUNCIL Woodmancote Parish Council would like to wish ev-eryone who lives or works in or around Woodmancote a very happy, healthy and enjoyable New Year! 2013 has been a full and eventful year. We started the year with snow, then we had overseas youthcricket teams playing in sunshine at Blackstone, new salt bins arriving in time for winter, then we get power cuts in Woodmancote and now the possibili-ties of large developments in and around the par-ish! But Woodmancote remains a cheerful, happy and friendly place to live and work. 2014 sees the start of our Neighbourhood Plan, something for everyone to be involved with, so please bring your ideas forward to us and help make sure Woodmancote continues to thrive in the future and remains a pleasant place to live.Colin Brouke, Chairman of Woodmancote Parish Council. HEALTH BENEFITS OF TAI CHI AND QIGONGTai Chi and Qigong are two ‘mind and body’ practices that originated in China. Tai Chi consists of a series of fluid gentle movements that combine breathing and relaxation with postures that flow from one to another through controlled slow movements. Qigong is an exercise system that comes in many various forms: some are done with little or no movement in stand-ing positions; others involve twisting and stretching of the limbs. The way we move, breathe, stand, walk and even sit can have a positive or negative effect on our general health. Many of us suffer stiffness in muscles and joints often brought on by poor posture and weaken-ing of core muscles. We need some form of exercise that gently and steadily relaxes the body and most importantly refreshes the mind. Furthermore, conven-tional exercise is often too strenuous or exhausting for many people and also has little effect on the internal part of our body. Tai Chi and Qigong help to develop internal and external elements of our body by the de-velopment of controlled movements combined with visualization and deep abdominal breathing. Those that practice Tai Chi and Qigong report height-ened feelings of well-being along with a variety of other health benefits. Research has found that Tai Chi can improve balance control reducing the likelihood of falls, particularly in the elderly. Tai Chi also improves coordination, mobility and flexibility reducing joint pain and stiffness. Western research has accepted the fact that the regular practice of Tai Chi and Qigong builds confidence and improves ones physical and mental health. An additional benefit is the fact that at a basis level the movements are fun and easy to learn and are accessible to most people irrespective of their age or physical fitness. For information see www.westsussex-taichi.co.ukIrvin Morris

DOVE NURSERY NEWSWhat a busy time we had in December! On Tuesday 10 December we took the children on a walk through the woods to the village to visit Kaylee’s Cakery where they decorated their own Christmas cupcake. They really enjoyed their excursion and Kayleigh also pro-vided some activities and drinks. Santa came to our Christmas party at the Cricket Pavilion on Thursday 12 December with his loaded sack of toys. Then on Friday 13 December we performed our musical nativi-ty ‘The Innkeepers Breakfast’ about a busy innkeeper, who loves her breakfast but everytime she sits down to eat someone knocks on the door! The children loved learning the new songs and many of them ac-tually wanted to say a line or two - we have been so impressed with what they have learned.Vivian Ruffett

HENFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN - UPDATEWork has now started in earnest on the Henfield Neighbourhood Plan following the appointment of Action in Rural Sussex, the organisation being em-ployed to provide professional advice and support. A timetable setting out key stages in the production of the Plan has now been agreed, with the aim for the referendum (the final part of the process), to be held in May 2015.An open event will be held in Henfield Hall on Satur-day 18 January (9.30am-1pm) and on the following Thursday, 23 January (6.30pm-9pm) to launch public involvement in the Neighbourhood Plan, thereby con-tinuing the very important task of encouraging input from the local community. We need your participation to prepare a Plan that represents the Community’s views, so please come along to one of these events.Volunteers are needed to join focus groups which will consider and make recommendations about specific aspects of the plan. Topics to be covered are (1) en-vironment and countryside; (2) community and infra-structure; (3) transport and traffic; (4) housing and de-velopment and (5) the local economy. There is also a group specifically to cover Small Dole. Some people have already offered to take part but more are needed. If you can help, particularly if you have an interest in or knowledge of any of these subjects, please contact Philip Hill at the Henfield Parish Council office 01273 492507 or [email protected] www.henfieldhub.com/residents/henfields-neighbourhood-plan

HENFIELD HISTORY TRAIL PROJ-ECT AWARDS FOR CHILDRENHenfield children who took part in a history treasure trail event at the village library received awards for their success last month. The treasure trail, spon-sored by AVS Fencing of Horsham, was organised by Henfield Community Partnership. Ten boards show-ing the background to famous Henfield people and places were displayed in village shops, before being moved to the library at half term where children were given quiz sheets to complete.Leo Jago of HCP said: “We were delighted with the success of the project, which was designed to bring history to life for young people in the village. Many people are not aware of the historical background of some well-known names in the area and this was very educational for everyone.”The winning entry was from Megan Hollis of Henfield. The runners up were Beatrix Crowther and sister Flor-ence of Fulking, and Marcy Ferguson-Smith of Lanc-ing. They received their certificates from AVS Fencing director Mark Whiting.

HENFIELD PARISH COUNCILWhen new buildings are constructed the developer is usually required to make a planning gain contribution (commonly referred to as a Section 106 payment). The recent development at Parsonage Farm attracted a large sum of Section 106 money to be invested in the infrastructure of the local community. In addition to amounts for highways, education, library services and fire and rescue, other contributions towards open spaces and amenity areas, community centres and halls, indoor and outdoor leisure facilities and youth activities were made. Use of this money is restricted to capital projects and normally requires an applicant contribution towards the overall cost. Whilst final de-cision regarding allocation of money rests with Hor-sham District Council, Henfield Parish Council is keen to ensure these funds are used in the best overall way to benefit Henfield. Some of the funds are already ear-marked by the Parish Council to improve existing vil-lage facilities such as children’s play areas, but com-munity groups and organisations may be able to apply to help fund proposed projects. For more information please contact Parish Clerk Philip Hill (Tel: 492507)

The Council continues to invest to extend the areas of work it can undertake to maintain and enhance the vil-lage. Latest additions include a van, two-wheel tractor and snow brush. A lot of work the Parish Council now undertakes is primarily the responsibility of the District or County Councils. But with those Councils under so much pressure to cut their expenditure, Henfield Par-ish Council is working hard within its limited budget to meet this shortfall in services. The Council also con-tinues to discuss with West Sussex County Council taking over some of its local highway responsibilities from next April. At its December meeting Council co-opted Richard Kendall as a new Member to fill the vacancy which arose following the resignation last summer of Mat-thew Brookbank.Henfield Parish Council is very grateful to Hamfelds Home and Gardens for donating over 600 daffodil bulbs which have been planted on the northern ap-proach into Henfield and in Upper Station Road.

MACMILLAN THANK YOUI would like to say a big thank you to all the shops in Henfield for donating prizes and One Stop for do-nating the tea and coffee for the Macmillan Cancer Support coffee morning I organised on Saturday 23 November. Also a big thank you to Rushfields Gar-den Centre and The Bull pub for donating. We raised £114.05 in total.Elizabeth Hills

THANK YOU HENFIELDI would like to thank people in Henfield who have made donations for the victims of typhoon Haiyan in Philippines. I have been overwhelmed by your gen-erosity. Not only you have contributed through my global appeal on the internet but also through my fa-ther (Arun Agarwal) who has so far raised over £2,000 in the village. Every penny raised will go towards re-building the lives of people on the tiny island of Mala-pascua, just north of Cebu. I care for these people who have helped me build my scuba diving business here over the last ten years. With the funds we have raised so far, I am confident we can help our 50 members of staff rebuild their

homes. The basic needs of the local community, such as food, healthcare and a simple shelter have already been met, and now work starts on the mammoth task of rebuilding the infrastructure. We have already supplied books, pencils, paper and crayons for the primary school as everything was washed away. It is proving to be quite challenging to transport in bulk the building materials to the island where there is no pier or roads or four wheel vehicles. Everything is carried by hands. All the businesses on the island are getting together to provide communal toilets, waste disposal and rebuilding the schools on a more durable basis. It will take time before we are back to normal. Thank you very much Henfield. Andrea Agarwal, Malapascua

HERITAGE QUILT ON TRACK FOR COMPLETION IN NOVEMBERThe Heritage Quilt Project was on display for all to see at this year’s Steyning Grammar School Winter Fair. Volunteers from all ages spent the day sewing pieces together and embellishing details in the community panels. Feedback from visitors was very enthusiastic and has encouraged the volunteer team to continue the journey to completion. The project started over a year ago with the aim to create five quilted panels to celebrate the upcoming 400 year anniversary of the school in 2014. The panels will depict the history of Steyning Grammar School and its relationship with the local community. The school has been working closely with Steyning Museum, National Association Decorative Fine Art Society, local historians, Steyn-ing Festival 2014, past Grammarians, past teachers, local community volunteers and approximately 300 students to make the quilts which will document and commemorate this occasion. Amanda Duke, the Project Manager and Steyning Grammar School Faculty Leader for Creative and Performing Arts said “New faces are still offering their help and we enjoy welcoming new participants into the project. The goodwill shown by community mem-bers has been heartening and the feel good factor is 100%.” Nick Wergan, Headteacher Steyning Gram-mar School said “The Quilt is proving to be a great success in bringing our community together to cel-ebrate the 400th Anniversary; the work itself is won-derfully creative and quite moving to see. I can’t wait to see the final outcome.”The ‘sew together sessions’ for 2014 will be held on: 25 January; 15 February; 15 March; 26 April; 28 June; 12 July; and 25 October. If anyone still wants to get involved do get in touch. There is no requirement to be highly skilled in quilting or sewing, the only quali-fication needed is interest and enthusiasm. Please contact the Project Manager Amanda Duke on email [email protected] or call 01903 814555.

HENFIELD CENTENARY PROJECT - REFLECTIONS OF WW1As August 2014 marks one hundred years since the start of World War One I thought it would be appropri-ate for us to do something to acknowledge it. My idea is that current residents and those living in Henfield between coming years 2014-2018 may wish to re-member and honour their relatives who played a part in the Great War of 1914-1918. The plan is to run a project over the next four years, gathering names and stories from this time. The Henfield Hub has allowed me access to their web site where any information can be seen and stored. For those who do not have a computer it is hoped to have a physical display, either static or mobile for events around the village. I will need photographs if available, information of where they came from, the name of the person, any position, rank and regiment. Information on whether they were killed in the conflict, where they are buried or remembered, or if they sur-vived. Any interesting stories could be added.

Some relatives involved in the war may not have been in the military but played a part in some other way, we should also remember them. So often we remember those who died but we should also remember those who survived as they had to live with the results of the conflict. The name of the person supplying the infor-mation could be added at the bottom with their rela-tionship to the person. I am hoping this may encour-age people to think about and discover a relative that was involved in the Great War. There will obviously be a lot in the media and events across the country to make people aware. If anyone is interested or wishes to help me, I can be contacted at [email protected] or on 01273 492194. Maureen Fletcher

HENFIELD CAMERA CLUB CELEBRATES 50 YEARS.

Henfield Camera Club members and special invited guests filled the Garden Room in the Hen-field Hall on Friday 15 No-vember to celebrate the club’s fiftieth birthday. An exhibition of members’ prints was presented during the evening, to-gether with a display of photographic equipment which included many vintage items. Members and guests enjoyed a buffet and an opportunity to share stories about the Camera Club’s activi-

ties over the past fifty years. A celebration cake was cut by Mark Hayes, the founding member of the club. The photographic exhibition was opened to the public during Saturday morning of Saturday 16 November, with the work of members being well received. The Henfield Camera Club warmly welcomes all those with an interest in photography to their club evenings. Please contact chairman David Barrett (e-mail: [email protected]) or see the Club’s website for information about the club and its activities.

CORRECTIONIn our write-up of the Remembrance Service in the December edition of BN5 magazine we mistakenly referred to the band who led the parade as Patcham Silver Band when in fact it was Brighton & Hove Brass Band. We would like to apologise to Brighton & Hove Brass Band – it must have been a case of one too many glasses of mulled wine in the office while we were putting the festive edition together!

CHERISH CARE: NATIONAL FINALIST IN SKILLS FOR CARE ACCOLADESCherish Care are delighted to announce that they have been short listed as a National Finalist in Skills for Care’s Accolade for ‘Best Employer of under 250 staff’. The Accolades, now in their eleventh year, re-

ward organisations for the support and development of their staff. In order to reach the National Final Cher-ish Care had to go through a rigorous interview pro-cess and came top in the South East region. Cherish Care prides itself on the development of its staff and as one member of staff said: “We are always learning something new and I was so proud when I achieved my qualifications. I can provide the best care for our clients because I know how to!” Members of the Cherish Care team will be attending the Awards cer-emony on 27 March in Birmingham when the winners will be announced for the different categories.

PLANNING - PUBLIC INQUIRYBarratts the developers are appealing Horsham Dis-trict Council’s decision to refuse them planning per-mission to build 160 houses on agricultural fields in West End Lane. As you may know, this appeal will take the form of a Public Inquiry to take place on Tuesday 25 March 2014 at HDC’s offices in Horsham (please note change of date).Barratts will be represented by a QC (top barrister) and will call a number of expert witnesses to give evidence. HDC is opposing Barratts’ appeal but, in this finan-cial climate, cannot commit unlimited public monies. Hands off Henfield, therefore, are continuing to raise funds to enable us to appoint our own QC, and expert witness(es), to work in tandem with HDC’s own barrister. At the time of writing, December 2013, funds are be-ginning to come in and several residents have agreed to underwrite some of the costs. HoH really appreci-ates your support so far. However we will continue to need funding right up until the appeal. Contributions can be made to Lloyds Bank, High Street, Henfield, with cheques payable to NOWELD (the original ac-count name was kept when the group became HoH) or sent electronically to Account No 31909068, Sort Code 30-18-30.For up to date information on these and other related matters, please look on the Henfield Hub, www.hen-fieldhub.com, by entering Hands off Henfield in the search box. Alternatively check the notice board in the bus shelter, or join Hands off Henfield’s mailing list to receive regular email updates by sending your contact details to [email protected] Manuel

WORLD WAR II DAYYear 6 students at St Peters Primary School went back in time to the 1940’s last November as part of their topic work on World War II. As well as visiting Henfield museum to find out more about the village during the war, they also held a World War II day where students and staff dressed up in 1940’s costumes and learnt more about what war time life was like. The children (and their parents!) rose to the challenge magnificently and there was an impressive display of soldiers, fight-er pilots, land army girls, film stars, housewives, home guard soldiers, ‘Rosie the Riveter’ girls and even three

Winston Churchills! The costumes were put to use again for a fantastic assembly in front of the rest of the school and parents which was both amusing but at the same time extremely poignant. Well done to all those involved! Sarah Butler

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION POPPY APPEALThis year £4,868.28 was raised during the two weeks of Remembrance for the Poppy Appeal in Henfield, Small Dole and Shermanbury. Although this figure is down on last year, bearing in mind the present eco-nomic climate, it is still a tremendous sum.The total raised in the Henfield District for the Poppy Appeal for the year ending 30 September 2013 year totalled £8,635.37. The additional monies came from the Church collections at the Remembrance Service, sale of wreaths, donations and our Coffee Mornings. Our Coffee Morning in October raised £377.10 and my thanks go to all those who helped. A very big thank you to all who donated and to all of my Collectors and helpers, especially Christine Parkes, who helped me with the distribution and col-lection of boxes and with the counting of monies. Without the help of all these people none of this would have been possibleMike Morgan, Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal Organiser for Henfield, Small Dole and Shermanbury District

RED OAKS TYPHOON FUNDRAISERCongratulations to Red Oaks staff and residents for raising an incredible £3,200.62 for the Philippines ty-phoon disaster during a coffee morning at the Care Home in November. When the posters went out for a coffee morning and fundraising sale the response was immense. Around 300 people attended, as well as the residents, all digging deep to support the disaster ap-peal. Every penny is precious, for medical supplies, temporary accommodation and to rebuild the infra-structure of the most seriously affected areas. Every-one who attended got the chance to sample some traditional Filipino food, delicious noodles, spring rolls and sweet rice. There was a traditional cake stall with many contributions from local cake bakers. Thanks to everyone who helped.

POLICE UPDATEEach year a number of cars are stolen from driveways in the mornings when they are left unattended and run-ning in order to defrost while the owner continues to get ready indoors. Doing this increases the risk of your car being stolen and you may find that your insurance company refuse to pay out due to your actions. Think of the value of your car - would you leave thousands of pounds in cash sitting on your driveway unattended? Take a few minutes extra to scrape and de-ice.The darker evenings have been upon us for some time now and this is always a popular time for burglars to go to work. I would urge people not to leave their

house in darkness when they are not home. If you know you won’t be home before dark, leave a couple of lamps on a timer switch. If you go out after dark leave a light or two on and draw the curtains to give the appearance that you are home. Most burglaries occur at the rear of the property. Take a moment to look at your property and think how easy is it for someone to get into your back garden? There are often simple and inexpensive improvements you can make to prevent this. There has been an increase in thefts from vehicles where property is left in the vehicle and on show. Al-ways remove all valuables, laptops, sat-navs and so on. Even if the bag on your back seat doesn’t contain anything valuable, remember... a thief doesn’t know that until they look inside the bag, by which time they have already broken into and damaged your vehicle. Looking ahead, we usually see an increase in shed breaks as Spring approaches. Items usually stolen in-clude strimmers and chainsaws. Take time now to en-sure your shed and outbuildings are properly secure, and keep an eye on them over the winter. If you feel you could benefit from a visit and crime prevention advice around your property, please con-tact me. PC Martin Harris. Tel: 101 ext 16939, Email: [email protected]

HENFIELD COMPUTER CLUBHenfield Computer Club, which was set up to help older people get on line and become confident using computers, is looking for more volunteer instructors.Though the club has not been running long, it is prov-ing to be a great success. The club aims to attract older people who want help and advice to get started, or if they already have a computer, with any problems they encounter. However, particularly at the start, when learning new skills people need focused help, so in order to expand the membership, it is important to have enough volunteers to ensure that everyone gets the help they need particularly in the early stages. The club is based at the Leisure Centre and runs weekly on Wednesday’s from 12.45-2.45pm. If you are competent using a PC, laptop or tablet, either Mi-crosoft or Apple, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact Alison Vine on 01273 492620.

HENFIELD CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS - AND RAIN FAILS TO DAMPEN SPIRITSThe village celebrated the Spirit of Christmas on Fri-day despite the rain - with charity fund-raisers, food stalls, musical groups and Santa Claus in the High Street.

Santa’s sleigh (courtesy of the BP Guild) was in the centre of the village and Santa was in his grotto near-by in the bus shelter, run by Henfield Youth Club.Shops and banks were open with refreshments for customers. Charity stalls included Friends of St. Barnabas House, Henfield Leisure Centre and the Scout Hut Appeal. Henfield Free Church carol singers entertained throughout the evening and members of West Chiltington Silver Band played Christmas tunes outside The Bell.HART (Henfield Area Response Team) were on duty in their trailer outside Henfield Club and were called to help a pedestrian slightly injured in a fall. Henfield Enterprise chairman Mike Beardall said: “We were un-lucky with the weather. The rain arrived as we were setting up - but there was a great atmosphere in the High Street and the rain failed to dampen out spirits.“Our thanks to all the traders and volunteers who made the evening so successful and provided enter-tainment and food.”Mike Beardall

“We actively champion local businesses and we know that BN5 is a great way to find trusted local tradespeople. The website has a very comprehensive search facility.”

It’s been eight years since we published the very first printed copy of BN5 magazine and delivered it, via Royal Mail, to every postcode in the BN5 area. And

what an eight years we have had!Our aim has always been to inform and to help our local community. From the very first magazines we have slowly built up a readership and a reputation for good quality editorial, interesting news and extensive events listings. For us it’s always been about qual-ity (not just quantity) and now we are inundated each month with editorial contributions, which is the way we like it. We are a community magazine and the contributions from local people are what make us uniquely Henfield.

Our popular Facebook page has been up and running for a while now and it’s been a fabulously successful way for us to share more immediate news, fun and events with you and vice-versa. We love the commu-nity spirit of those who follow us and contribute infor-mation – it really brightens our day!And now we have the BN5 website. It’s pretty much an on-line version of the magazine: vibrant, colour-ful, attractive, easy to navigate and interesting. We’ve kept it simple, but what it lacks in complexity it makes up for in depth.

We’re extremely proud to say that the BN5 magazine is the first place people look for local business and services and the website is an extension of this. Our Business Directory has over 600 local businesses, and the list is growing. We actively champion local businesses and we know BN5 is a great way to find trusted local tradespeople. From as little as £10 a month you can enhance the profile of your business by advertising with us and really make your business stand out from the crowd. If you’d like to find out more call Zoe on 01273 494002 [email protected].

Our search facil-ity is really easy to use so you will be able to quickly find the informa-tion you are after, be it diary listings, contact de-tails for clubs and groups, or directions. We’ve also made it super easy for you to submit your own news items and diary list-ings, so there’s no excuse not to share them with the wider community.

One thing certainly won’t find on the BN5 website is static or out-of-date pages: our news items are updat-ed on an almost daily basis, plus you’ll find the current and back issues of the magazine so you’ll never be short of a good read. We love a story - there’s nothing better than finding out something interesting to share with others. We’ve interviewed many inspiring people about their lives, travels and passions. We’ve talked to artists, fundraisers, sportspeople, musicians, poli-ticians, war veterans, Olympians, authors, as well as ‘regular’ villagers with great stories to tell. Quite sim-ply there is never a dull moment! We’re very excited about our website. It’s had sev-eral versions that haven’t passed muster but finally we feel confident that it represents us well and will represent Henfield and the surrounding area well. We can now be immediate with news and information: every time you look there will be something different - a true reflection of our vibrant, interesting and ever-changing village.

But don’t just take our word for it – see for yourself at

READING FOR WELLBEING

Stroke rehabilitation in hospitals can be a long and difficult process. As well as the physical problems caused by stroke, patients are often

left feeling depressed, isolated and lacking in self-esteem. This is where the charity InterAct Reading Service is making a difference.

Local resident Malcolm Harrington is one of many professional actors who spend a couple of hours a week reading aloud to stroke patients in Hospitals around the country. “Our objectives are to raise the patient’s spirits and take their mind of their condition” said Malcolm. “It’s all about looking for connections that will spark off a memory and give pleasure.” More specifically, the InterAct Reading Service works to im-prove the rate and quality of an individual’s recovery from a stroke by: improving mood; alleviating post-stroke depression; increasing self-esteem; boosting communication confidence; stimulating the brain; and providing entertainment.

Malcolm has been involved in amateur dramatics throughout his life, including Henfield Theatre Com-pany and its predecessors the Choral and Operatic Society and the Henfield Players. But 1999, after years of working in the catering industry and in the NHS as a health promotion adviser, Malcolm decided to go back to education and did a one year post-grad-uate drama course in London. “It’s something that I always wanted to do when I was younger but never did. It was very, very hard work – totally exhausting!” Since then he has a variety of acting roles on televi-sion, theatre in education and touring with open-air theatre companies.

Malcolm got involved with the InterAct Reading Ser-vice about five years ago after seeing an advert in The Stage magazine. The charity always uses professional actors for several reasons: they have the dramatic skills to hold the concentration of somebody who is not only unwell but also in a hospital environment; they have the vocal stamina to sustain long periods of reading; and they also have the technique to pick up on and respond to unspoken reactions from the patients.

“Thank you so much. I feel uplifted by your words. I’m so grateful to you for the stimulation. You really fill a gap”

“Thank you for entertaining me, I’ve enjoyed your readings, it’s such a relief to have someone reading to me, thank you so much”

“Having a stroke is so lonely. It is such a shock you need someone to keep your spirits up. Thank God for you and for the ministry of your stories. They keep me focused and keep my feet on the right path”

The readings can be anything - extracts from fiction or autobiographies, poetry, hymns or even jokes. “Sometimes the patient will tell you what they like, but sometimes you have to try and guess what they would like” said Malcolm. “I always have a few books of poems and short stories to choose from in my bag, as well as the Interact Reading Service Manual which has a very diverse selection of prose.” He went on to explain: “Older generations often had to learn poems by heart when they were at school and sometimes when I start to read ‘Daffodils’ by Wordsworth, ‘The Tyger’ by William Blake or ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling, pa-tients who have previously been uncommunicative start to mouth the words!”

The challenge of reading to desperately ill patients is ultimately rewarding as Malcolm explained: “Knowing that you are breaking up the day for someone who has nothing to do other than worry about their condi-tion – that’s the good thing about it. But it can also be quite depressing – patients can be, quite under-standably, upset or depressed, so it’s not all smiles, laughter and recognition.”

The InterAct Reading Service makes a real difference to the recovery and lives of stroke survivors. They re-ceive no statutory funds and so rely almost entirely on the generosity of individuals and trusts for their existence. If you would like to support the InterAct Reading Service, please visit www.interactreading.org for more information, email [email protected] or call 020 7931 6458.Sarah Butler

“The doctors look at my symptoms and I feel their concern. My family look at what I’ve become and I feel their concern. But when you look at me as you read your stories and we talk; you see the me that I’ve always been because you look beyond my sickness, and that makes me feel better”

“It’s like a medicine to have someone read to you and spend time with you”

“I think it’s wonderful - makes you realise you’ve still got your marbles!... I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this”

We’re all under the weather and have to take a trip to see our GPs from time to time. Things have certainly changed over the years, many

will remember the days of General Practice when you visited your doctor at their home surgery with one recep-tionist looking after the surgery. The economies of scale led to a more modern and structured service and in 1993 the Deer Park surgery was built by the doctors, with land donated as part of the Parsonage Farm housing development. In 2010 the surgery was expanded further to provide 12 con-sulting rooms for the seven GP partners, four part-time nurses and other services. The Centre now has a list of over 9,500 patients across the area, including Partridge Green, where the branch surgery is located at the Woodlawn site in the High Street. When you visit Henfield Medical Centre chances are you’re needing just one area of care, be it a GP visit, child clinic or physio. Many of us don’t realise the depth and range of services the Centre can provide and just how much work goes into keeping the Centre running smoothly. The surgery has a dispensary, library, counseling room and a purpose built physiotherapy suite. They offer on-site chiropody and physiotherapy as well as weekly sessions with a clinical psychologist, midwife and health visitors. It’s fully equipped to deal with the trends in modern healthcare, which are moving towards keeping minor surgeries and specialist clin-ics community rather than hospital based. This is in-finitely more convenient for patients, cutting waiting and travel times, as well as freeing up hospitals for more critical care.

Katie Hill is the Practice Manager. I met Katie one Wednesday morning, just in time for coffee, when the GPs, nurses and practice team filtered in to take their break. Katie explained a little of the process patients encounter when they make their initial call to the Cen-tre and I was able to observe and chat with the team.

When you call Henfield Medical Centre you will be greeted by one of the practice team receptionists. They are all highly trained, with the utmost levels of confidentiality training, to deal with calls, some urgent and critical and some more routine. The questions they ask may sound a little personal, but it’s all part of the initial ‘triage’ when the patient is assessed for the degree of urgency and which area of the Centre the patient should be directed towards. This is impor-tant for many reasons – none of us would like to think we were ‘jumping the queue’ in front of someone who may be seriously ill and need referral to an emergency service, or maybe it’s you that needs immediate at-tention.

If it’s a routine and non-urgent appointment then it’s likely you’ll be able to see your regular GP. This is of-ten preferable, especially if it’s an issue that needs continuity and long term care. Otherwise you’ll be al-located one of the seven GP Partners. This is a slight-ly different system to many other Practices, where patients don’t have a designated GP and are given less than 10 minutes per appointment (including time for your GP to write up notes or send letters, which hardly gives the patient time to take off their coat). At Henfield the times are more generous and GPs try very hard to stick to their appointment slots. This isn’t always possible but it’s easy to appreciate that some

visits do overrun. The priority is care – individual care for each patient, time for them to talk and time for the GP to figure the best way to bring them back to full health. If an appointment overruns and you have to wait a little longer for your time further down the queue then surely that’s preferable to patients be-ing shuffled out of the door before they have been listened to properly?

With the system changes that have enabled Medical Centres to be more efficient and run more smoothly there have been some down-sides. GPs now need to write extensive notes on each visit, which is the part we don’t see when we leave the consulting room! Gone are the days of a scribbled one-liner. This means that if you have multiple problems it may not be a good idea to save them all up for one visit, or at the least please ask the receptionist for a longer ap-pointment time.

If you’re feeling very poorly then your need might be more immediate – so an emergency appointment can be arranged. The receptionist may arrange a ‘call back’ from one of the four nurses. They are highly trained and experienced, and know exactly the right questions to ask to assess how you can be best helped. It may mean a visit to see a nurse, or one of the GPs. These appointments are in high demand, but it’s reassuring to know that you’ll be seen that day if you’ve got immediate health worries. Once again, it’s worth bearing in mind that your GP can be called out on a medical emergency when you’re waiting for your appointment – sometimes these things are unavoid-able.

If you have a long-term condition then the Medical Centre can point you in the direction of self-help and support groups. They work with many local organisa-tions, including and most recently Know Dementia, who are helping to make Henfield a dementia friendly community. The Friends of Henfield Medical Centre are a fantastic support for the Centre, they also of-fer some very informative (and very often over-sub-scribed) evening talks on different medical topics. Check BN5’s What’s On pages for these dates and reserve your place early.

We are lucky that Henfield Medical Centre is highly regarded as a place of good practice – we are one of the few villages to have university medical students (years one, four and five) coming to the village for their training. You may be asked if a student can sit in on your appointment. This is valuable for the student, the Centre and for you; sometimes they are purely observing and other times they are conducting the consultation, under supervision. It’s a reflection of the quality of care at Henfield that the Medical Centre has these prized teaching posts allocated to them.

After spending a couple of hours chatting with the nurses, practice team and GPs it’s apparent that they are all utterly committed to maintaining and improving the health of the local community. It seems that the NHS and those who work in it are often under a sustained and unbalanced attack from the national press. In the face of this the team at Henfield are incredibly positive and proud of their practice. We’ve got a valuable (and still free) resource, how lucky we are.Emma Osman

01273 494002 BN5 MAGAZINE | 45

In January many people feel a sense of déjà vu as they see the scales have crept up, while wishing they had resisted that extra sausage roll or second

helping of Christmas pudding. The festive overeating, celebrating (drinking) and too much sofa time can leave you feeling sluggish and unfit come the New Year. For some, the long periods of inactivity may even have even caused the return of a niggling back pain. Does this sound all too familiar? It’s very common to rush out to join the gym or get the latest celebrity ex-ercise DVD in an attempt to address the problem, but this initial burst of enthusiasm has often dwindled by the middle of February. This year, how about trying something different? A method of exercise that really makes a difference to the way you feel and the way you move.Pilates offers a unique, total-body conditioning re-gime that works differently from other fitness tech-niques. Long popular with dancers, gymnasts and actors, it is now well established, appealing to any-one who: wants a stronger back or flatter stomach; to those with specific injuries or medical problems; or those who simply want to get fit or de-stress. Doc-tors, physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors often recommend Pilates as one of the safest and most effective forms of exercise available.Pilates works by building strength from the inside out. By rebalancing the body and bringing it into correct postural alignment and by working on deep postural muscles in the abdomen and spine, it helps

to reshape your body, which becomes longer, leaner, stronger and more toned. It also improves your pos-ture and delivers a fitness which quickly becomes a way of life and not simply an exercise regime!I have been teaching APPI Pilates in Henfield, West Sussex for eight years. I love helping people to change their lives and seeing my clients feeling terrific, vibrant and more energised through a deeper understanding of their own health and fitness. The results can be ex-traordinary, and life-changing. As well as a stronger, toned and more flexible body, my clients also report fewer aches and pains, more energy and increased vitality. What’s more, you don’t just see the improvements in the studio. Students quickly learn to incorporate what they have learned into their daily lives, by improv-ing the way they stand and walk, how they sit at a computer or drive a car, and in sports such as skiing, tennis, running, cycling, hiking, dancing or swimming.Pilates is of benefit whether you have never exercised before or you always have and always will. Whether you have a sedentary job (sitting for long hours every day), or you are on your feet too much. My clients include busy mums, over-worked executives with bad backs, people with chronic back pain and joint prob-lems.

Maybe Pilates is the ideal way for you to kick-start 2014!

Why not sign up for my six-week structured programme for Absolute Beginners, starting in February at Henfield Leisure Centre? Rebound is performed on a small trampoline and has the advantage of promoting whole body wellness, as well as reducing your body fat and firming up your legs, thighs, abdomen and hips. 20-20-20 is a class that gives you an all-over body workout, with 20 minutes of aerobics, 20 minutes of step aerobics and 20 minutes of body toning. Circuit training is a great way to work your whole body using different equipment and pushing yourself to your maximum limit. Each week the session is slightly different.

The gymWe have a fully equipped gym with a great cardio section, resistant weights and free weights section. Our fully trained staff will give you an induction and, if required, a bespoke training programme to suit your needs at a minimal fee. Why not treat yourself to an annual membership in 2014? For many of us January can be the gloomiest month of the year. The bustle of Christmas has passed, often leaving both emotional and financial fallout to deal with, especially if we have succumbed to the usual pressure to eat, drink and spend too much. For some, the festive season can be a lonely and disappointing time, while for others it means struggling to hold together already fragile relationships. Add to this the fact that the days are short and cold and we spend so much time cooped up indoors, and it’s hardly surprising so many people hit a low point at this time of year and become overwhelmed by negative feelings. It helps to deal with troublesome emotions. Feelings can be like a pressure cooker and if they are not released appropriately they can build to bursting point. Knowing when to ask for help is essential and a sign of strength not weakness.

We can also experience a feeling of motivation in January, a wish to make changes in response to the New Year, a time of new beginnings and to look at what challenges you would like to meet and address for yourself. Counselling can offer you the support you need to address the issues that are affecting you most and help you to make the changes you want to make.

RED OAKSCelebrating life through a quality care home

Red Oaks, The Hooks, Henfield, West Sussex, BN5 9UY

RED OAKS STAFF RAISE AN INCREDIBLE £3,200.62 FOR THE PHILIPPINES TYPHOON DISASTERVirginia Ramos, a Registered Nurse at Red Oaks, has lived in Henfield for 10 years with her family. She has close friends who have lost their homes in the disaster which struck her native country – thankfully all her family are safe but the devastation facing those who survived the typhoon struck a chord with not only the Filipino staff at Red Oaks but with everyone who worked there, as well as the residents, who have such close contact with those affected.

Red Oaks is very much at the heart of the village and when the posters went out for a coffee morning and fundraising sale the response was immense. Around 300 people attended, as well as the residents, all digging deep to support the disaster appeal. Every penny is precious, for medical supplies, temporary accommodation and to rebuild the infrastructure of the most seriously affected areas.

Jacky Walsh, manager at Red Oaks, said; “Everyone has contributed here. There has been an enormous amount of cake baking, people have donated very generously to our raffle, local businesses have donated to our ‘auction of skills’ and we’ve even been given some amazing Christmas decorations and gift wrap from Tesco’s to sell. The residents themselves voted to donate £1,000 from their resident’s fund and their families have been really supportive by attending and enjoying the morning with us. As always it’s a great team effort and I’m really proud of all the staff.”

Everyone who attended got the chance to sample some traditional Filipino food, delicious noodles, spring rolls, sweet rice desserts and little cakes. The staff wore traditional Filipino colours to mark the occasion. Virginia said; “I believe there are almost 40 Filipino families living in Henfield. We are so grateful to the generosity of local people who have come immediately to the aid of people so far away from them. It has touched our hearts.”

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO

I am an Optometrist and contacts lens practitioner, with a special interest in Varifocal dispensing. I’ve been an Optometrist for 13 years and I’ve been work-ing in Henfield for eight years.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE ON YOUR PARTICULAR CAREER?

I love science, working with specialist instruments and helping people to make a practical difference to their lives.

WHICH ASPECT OF YOUR JOB DO YOU LIKE BEST?

I love the more interesting and challenging aspects of Optometry work particularly when I can resolve complicated refraction issues, the binocular balance and to correct a patients eyesight to suit their life style, whether it be flying planes or to see their new smart phone clearly at close-up. As an independent optometrist I have a patient centred approach to care towards my patients and I have no pressure from corporate type organisations which I find immensely satisfying

HAS ANYONE INSPIRED YOU IN YOUR WORK?

My father and mother have very much inspired me. I was born, brought up and educated in England, but my parents came to this country in the latter part of the British Empire. They inspired me to be the best and would say; ‘make the most of the opportunities God has blessed you with in this country, particularly the education and the values of justice’.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

I’m proud of having achieved a first class honours de-gree in Optometry after an intense grilling from top professors in Optometry. I’m also proud of my repu-tation as a good high quality optometrist which has brought in patients from different generations

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE EVENT IN THE LOCAL CALENDAR?

The Christmas and new year break is becoming more of a favourite month for me as it is a time when most of our families get together in Surrey and Manches-ter and a time of reflection. As Muslim with Christian friends, it also helps me to connect and reflect on our highly respected prophet Jesus Christ and his univer-sal message of love and peace.

WHICH FAMOUS PERSON WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH, AND WHY

Mohammed Ali - he would be a very charismatic per-son to have a conversation with. I would like to probe the mind of one who has had a very interesting life journey from self-proclaimed greatness to sincere hu-

mility and love for humanity.

TELL US A JOKE!

Sol had lived a long life, which was drawing to its end. As his family surrounded him on his deathbed, he asked to see his optometrist.

“Optometrist?” they asked. “Why in the world do you want to see your optometrist?”

“Just get him for me.”

So they go get Dr Kaplan, who, on seeing Sol about to depart this life, asked: “Sol, it pains me to see you like this. What can I possibly do for you?”

Sol opened his eyes slightly and said, “Doc, before I go, there’s one thing I have to know. Which one was better, one or two?”www.henfieldeyecare.co.uk 01273 494030

SMEs and Bank Finance– LOST IN TRANSLATION

Here is a simple truth: there would be more jobs if there

were a better understand-ing between banks and the businesses that want to borrow from them. But this understanding appears to be

lacking, according to new research. We sometimes forget that it is not just mighty corpo-rations with interesting tax arrangements that provide work. More than 14.1 million people are employed in small and medium sized companies (or SMEs, as they are invariably known) in the UK.It is these businesses - from pie makers to precision engineers - that underpin communities in a way that the global giants rarely do. Their smaller cousins pro-vide the jobs and services that glue the country to-gether. When smaller businesses want to grow and recruit more people, they often need banks to fund that expansion.Yet there is a suspicion, fuelled by headlines and political unease, that despite a plethora of welcome Government initiatives to encourage lending, banks and smaller businesses are not always talking to each other, let alone engaged or married.Kingston Smith commissioned an independent study by the Business Schools at the Universities of Sur-rey and Greenwich to find out what is really going on, and why the money is not always getting to where it’s needed. Researchers interviewed SMEs involved with everything from hairdressing to wearable wire-less body sensors. Significantly, they also talked to the senior lending policy makers at five of the UK’s High Street banks. The results were troubling. On the plus side, most businesses applying for loans do actually succeed – 74% in fact. But that is still down from the 90% that did so before the banking crisis of 2008. However, 26% of SMEs that want money cannot access it. This is far too high. The Business School authors put the barriers to SME lending down to a lack of effective communication, with each side lost in translation with the other. The research showed that businesses don’t appreciate the risks banks take or understand the regulatory burdens that they face. It is not like taking money from an investor or friend. They often fail to recog-nise that banks want to share risk, not shoulder it. Owners need to show a good credit rating, prepare realistic business plans and seek some expert feed-back before approaching a lender. Instead, many treat borrowing money as if it were a ‘Dragons’ Den’ pitch where decisions are made on gut instinct - a virtue in entrepreneurs, perhaps, but a vice in bankers.Equally, banks need to be more candid about their loan criteria and provide feedback when they turn someone down. It would help if websites offered a

clear checklist of what they want to see in an ap-plication, not to mention adding a real human into the mix to help the process. The Government could also do more, particularly in sorting out the conflict-ing pressures on banks being expected to lend out money whilst also building up their own reserves. The state-backed Business Bank should help those firms currently struggling to get finance when it finally gets going, as long as it addresses this disconnect. But it will not help the perception that our research found and its damaging implications for jobs.Banks need to make more effort to be more acces-sible to businesses and in turn, businesses need to think harder about what banks want to see. It matters. We should remember that most SMEs pay their taxes in the UK. All of their taxes. Banks and businesses need to get their relationship back on track again. This is not a marriage anyone can afford to see fail. Our research report ‘Bank Finance – lost in translation’ can be downloaded at www.ks.co.uk/smebankfinance Paul SamrahFor further advice on this or other business issues, contact Paul Samrah on 01737 781546 or email [email protected]
