It’s been a busy month at BN5 magazine, we’ve moved offices to the centre of the village (we absolutely love it - thank you to everyone who has sent cards and popped in to see us). So, this issue has been put together in double-quick speed, after BT finally got us up and running with an internet connection!

This month’s theme is the diminutive honey bee. We’ve given bees centre stage on our cover this month, they are being featured this June at Sussex Prairies with a feast of bee-themed events. We also asked the Mid Sussex Beekeeping Association to give us some advice on the subject, please do get in touch with them if you’d like to find out more, or go to Sussex Prairies to meet the beekeepers there.

June is always Gardens and Arts in Henfield, once again there’s a wonderful selection of local gardens open for you to enjoy, along with displays from our talented artists and a huge range of music to entertain. Pick up your Blue Guide from a local shop and have some fun!

Henfield Leisure Centre have some big changes on the horizon, a large extension with a new studio, reception, cafe and a huge soft play area for children to enjoy. Take a look at their plans on page 26.

Have a great month, here’s to some sunny weather!

PLANNING FOR LATER YEARS – OPTIONS AND CHOICESMany of us are now living much longer than our parents, and so are aware that we could live on past the point where we can continue being independent in the way we have been used to. Henfield Action for Older People are holding a meeting in The Henfield Hall on Thursday 25 June 2015 from 2-4.30pm to give older people, carers, families and friends an introduction to some of the options and choices that could make a difference as to how people live in their later years. Speakers will cover: Care options; Legal issues; Help to maintain financial independence; and independent financial advice. All advice will take account of changes that have come about as a result of the Care Act 2014. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and take away useful information. Free refreshments including tea, coffee and homemade cakes will be served in the break. Older people, carers, family and friends are all welcome.Alison Vine

TENNIS SUCCESS FOR TOBYCongratulations to local rising tennis star Toby Bloomfield who has had a fantastic start to the summer. Following recent tournament success Toby is now ranked 26 in Great Britain and number one in Sussex in the 12-and-under age category. At the time of going to print Toby, who is a member of Henfield Tennis Club, was preparing for a National Tour event at the end of May. We wish Toby continued success for the rest of the season and we look forward to featuring him in the pages of BN5 magazine in the not too distant future.Sarah Butler

HENFIELD FRIENDS OF ST BARNABAS NEWSWe had a very interesting visit to the Hospice during April where we met members of the other Friends Groups. There we learned of the latest plans for improving the services of the Hospice. Our street collection will be in July, and we will be manning a stall at the Henfield Summer Fayre also in July. Please help us support your local Hospice.Peggy McCormas

MAKE IT A NIGHT TO REMEMBERExcitement is mounting for this year’s St Barnabas House Night to Remember Midnight Walk on Saturday 27 June – a ladies-only walk to raise vital funds for the hospice. During the last seven years, over 6,000 ladies have walked together to raise an incredible £1 million. The money raised from this year’s ‘Night to Remember’ will go towards expanding the Hospice at Home night service. For patients being cared for at home, night time can be the most difficult time for them and their family. Since the introduction of the night service, the hospice has seen demand increase and needs to double the number of healthcare assistants in order to provide this vital service to the local community. The walk starts and finishes at Worthing Leisure Centre and walkers can choose the 7 or 13.1 mile routes along Worthing’s streets and seafront, or a 20 mile route through Worthing to Shoreham and back. Men can get involved too! Over 200 volunteers are needed to marshal the route and keep the women walkers safe during the night. Registration costs just £20 and you can register for the walk or volunteer at www.nighttoremember.org.uk/stb or call 01903 706354. Please join us and walk through the night so our Hospice at Home team can care for patients in their own homes, through their darkest hours of need.

INSPIRATIONAL ILIDIA RUNS AGAINCongratulations to Ilidia Campbell, Henfield’s multi-marathon runner who has once again completed the London Marathon and the Brighton Marathon, this time in aid of MND (Motor Neurone Disease Association). MND helps with care, research and campaigning on behalf of those who suffer with this crippling disease.Ilidia is a familiar face in Henfield, she’s a receptionist at Henfield Medical Centre, where patients and staff have once again been incredibly supportive in helping her to raise money. Her total currently stands at £800.She is a member of the Henfield Joggers and has been running marathons and half marathons for the last 18 years for various causes, including Henfield Medical Centre, Well Child, the Stroke Association and the Alzheimer’s Society. Although she’s never counted how much she’s raised over the years, but we’ve estimated that it’s likely to be in excess of £20,000.“I had the most incredible day on Sunday, I was so pleased to complete in three hours 53mins. One of my daughters Heather came to support me and the other, Fiona, managed to track me on the internet from Australia! Once again people have been incredible and the response to my fundraising request has been overwhelming. Staff, friends and patients at Henfield Medical Centre never fail to

support me. Huge thanks to everyone!”London 2015 was Ilidia’s 23rd marathon. This year she also acted as ‘pacer’ in this year’s Brighton half and full Marathons. She said; “With all the attention I’ve had with people congratulating me I feel like Paula Radcliffe!” If you’d like to help Ilidia with her fundraising please go to www.justgiving.com/Ilidia-Campbell2/ To find out more about Motor Neurone Disease: www.mndassociation.orgEmma Osman

HENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL NEWSHenfield Parish Council, like most other local authorities, fights a continuing battle with litter on a daily basis and spends around 10% of the money raised from the residents of Henfield each year on employing an excellent team of litter wardens to pick up a never-ending stream of litter that is dropped around the village. In times of austerity when funding is clearly in short supply, it is a shame that money is needed to be spent on something so completely unavoidable. Nonetheless Henfield Parish Council takes the clearance of litter very seriously and will continue to keep the village clean and tidy wherever possible. We will also be introducing the ever-popular High Street hanging baskets again this year from early June. You may now be aware of the new Operating Model that has been rolled out by Sussex Police, which has been brought about by the need to save £57 million by 2020. This is in addition to the £50 million already saved up to 2015. Whilst there are clearly pressures on Local Policing, I would still urge residents to report all crime whenever it occurs. Did you know, for example, that you can report anti-social driving on the Operation Crackdown website. It takes around 5-10 minutes to submit a report and this will be forwarded to the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit so local officers can take appropriate action. Finally don’t forget to enter the date of the Henfield Summer Show this year in your diaries – it will be taking place on the Common on Saturday 18 July.Kevin Wright

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SPONSOR HENFIELD FC?Henfield FC has a new team, currently the U14s, made up from a group of local boys from years 8 and 9. This age group has been without a local team for nearly four years and they are currently playing in old borrowed shirts and no matching socks. For less than £500 you could promote your company by sponsoring them with new kit featuring your company logo for the next couple of seasons. If you would like to help and promote your company please email me at [email protected]. Richard Brooks, Manager, Henfield U14s.

RUSHFIELDS FARM SHOP PIE CHAMPIONSIf you need an excuse to try one of Rushfield Farm Shop’s homemade pies, then how about the fact that they are champion pie makers as voted for at the British Pie Awards earlier this year in Melton Mowbray? It was the Steak & Kidney pie that scooped the top award, but they have a wide range of equally delicious fillings. Congratulations to Colin and Alison for making such delicious pies!Sarah Butler

HENFIELD JOGGERS THREE PEAKSMany of you will remember the HART team who successfully tackled the Three Peaks Challenge in 2014. Well one year on and the man who led that challenge, Mark Skilton, is doing it all over again, this time with Henfield Joggers, of which he is a passionate member. We are entering two teams for the challenge on 21 June, which with drivers means around 20 people are involved.

The challenge is to climb the highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis 4,406 ft.), England (Scafell 3,206 ft.), and Wales (Mount Snowdon 3,560 ft.) consecutively within 24hours, including travel between the three peaks. That’s a walking distance of 20 miles, a vertical climb of 3km (just under 2 miles!), and the small matter of 500 miles of driving between the mountains! The two teams are already in training, with a weekend of mountain walking in Snowdonia in May as part of the acclimatization: running is one thing but walking up mountains (and especially walking down mountains!) is a very different matter, as last years HART team told us!Two charities will benefit from the sweat of the teams, one being the national Fire Fighters Charity, the other the much more local ‘Know Dementia’, for which we will be actively fundraising in and around Henfield. At the time of writing we are waiting for a dedicated Just Giving online donation account to be created but in the meantime any donations to Know Dementia can be made direct via their website at: www.knowdementia.co.uk

HORSE RESCUE WAS ALL IN A DAYS WORK FOR THE FIRE SERVICERescuing a damsel in distress is all in a day’s work for the Fire Service, even when that damsel is of the four-legged variety! West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s specialist Technical Rescue Unit and their new all-terrain Unimog vehicle were called into action in April when Trinity, a 33-year old New Forest pony, got herself into a sticky situation in a field off Brighton Road in Henfield. The elderly, but very well-loved, family pony had fallen in a wet, muddy field and was unable to stand. Crew Manager for the Technical Rescue Unit, Adrian Kirkpatrick, described the rescue: “We were called at shortly after 10am on Saturday morning but believe the pony had been down much of the previous night so she was cold, exhausted and not in a great way. Thankfully, our new all-terrain Unimog is a really versatile vehicle and has powerful lifting equipment. Previously, we would have had to rely on a local farmer with lifting capability on a tractor or another county fire service. Animal rescues are just a part of the role we carry out for the Fire Service but it is certainly

very satisfying when we’re able to get a positive outcome. We were delighted to hear from Trinity’s owner a few days later that she was doing really well.”Are you looking for a new challenge? Do you want to help protect your local community? Then why not apply to become a retained firefighter in Henfield! As a retained firefighter you will be ‘on-call’, providing vital emergency response cover from either your home or place of work. This means you can go about your normal life, but you will be ready to spring into action if you are called to deal with a 999 incident. You will be paid to be on-call for a specified number of hours each week. No previous experience is necessary as full training is provided. You just need to be over 18, physically fit and passionate about keeping your community safe. Interested? Phone 01243 642134 or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire to find out more.

SPEEDING IN HENFIELD There is no doubt that Henfield village suffers from a nearly straight high street that is also part of the A281. This main road is a conduit through to Horsham and onward to Guildford. It is no surprise therefore that drivers, of commercial vehicles in particular, are trying to get to other places as quickly as possible. We suffer too from the lack of parking and it annoys me no end the use of zig-zag lines to achieve this, near to our two crossings. This is creating mayhem, particularly at the northern end of the village. It proves a fact: Speeding is a problem to us all.To be clear, West Sussex County Council is responsible for parking on the road. Off road, or

SUSSEX PRAIRIES NEW VISITOR SIGNS Nick Herbert visited the Sussex Prairie Garden in April to celebrate their new official visitor signs. The recently re-elected MP was welcomed by Paul and Pauline McBride who own and manage the Sussex Prairie Garden on Friday. They had written to Mr Herbert to ask for his support in securing the visitor signs from West Sussex County Council in good time for their 2015 open season. The new brown tourist signs have been installed at either end of Wheatsheaf Road between Henfield and Albourne. Paul and Pauline are looking forward to welcoming visitors and are getting the garden ready for when they open the gates to the public on the first day of June.Pauline said: “Thanks to Nick’s help, our new brown visitor attraction signs have been put in place in readiness for the opening of our new season on 1st June 2015. Finding the best of our Sussex beauty just got a whole lot easier!” Nick Herbert said: “Sussex Prairie Garden is a beautiful place to visit and I was delighted to help secure their new signs. It was a pleasure to see the lovely gardens again.”

the police when over the limit. If you need help in finding them please make contact with me.As I said, West Sussex County Council do not have direct control over speeding but everyone there is keen to find the answer on behalf of the residents. If we can help at all it will be through our Community Safety team, led politically by Christine Field and by Emily King’s office. They have already been in touch with Mr. Hodges. Finally, please use the two crossings in the high street. These are outside Caudle Street and London House, both have proved a safe way to cross the street.Lionel Barnard

BROWNIES CANOEING REGATTAIt was time for our annual canoe regatta on the 10th May, 30 teams set off bright and early for Southwater Country Park. All the Brownies had two races to compete in, with one of them against the stop watch. 3rd Henfield Brownies 2nd team was up last, so we knew the time we had to beat. 2 minutes, 54 seconds. I am not sure what they had eaten for breakfast but they powered round the lake at an amazing speed, coming home in 1st place with a time of 2:16, giving us a massive margin over 2nd place of 38 seconds, far greater than the winning margin of just 1 second we had last year. So, really well done Bea, Marisa, Isabella and Flo, we are really proud of you.Congratulations must also go to 1st Henfield Brownies, who came an admirable 2nd place!Natalie Denning

the car parks, are looked after by Horsham District Council. Both have devolved the enforcement of parking rules to officers of Horsham District, who employ special officers. It is true that more cars, vans and large lorries’ parked on the roadway the slower the traffic, especially if a vehicle is double parked. Reduce the number of vehicles using the high street for parking and speed of most increases. But, I earnestly recommend Operation Crackdown to report any and all driving that is anti-social. You will need the offence, the time and place and the number of the vehicle concerned. Simply telephone or use the Internet and I assure you that you are not named to the offender. By the way, you can use the library PC’s now free of charge. All anti-social driving is the direct concern of the Sussex Police, which is managed through the Horsham Divisional office led by D.I.Hodges and his team. If in doubt about action on speeding make contact with the office of the Chief Constable and that of the Police and Crime Commissioner, both in Lewes. You could also start a local speed-watch service and I am sure that the group set up in Storrington would give all the guidance needed to start one here in Henfield. This scheme uses a laser gun and reports drivers to Operation Crackdown via

If you thought the team at Henfield Leisure Centre had plenty of energy, you haven’t seen anything yet! They’ve embarked on one of their biggest challenges

to date - one that will make a real difference to local children. Staff and committee members are planning to make the Leisure Centre an even more important part of our village and will welcome a whole new group of people to the facilities, with a £450k facelift and extension. If you’re a regular you’ll know about the huge range of classes they provide at HLC and their state of the art gym. You’ll also know it’s a meeting place for many sporting groups and clubs, not to mention a venue for children’s parties and how it offers a very important before and after school care service to working families. The exciting new plans will provide a modern and colourful ‘Soft Play and Adventure’ area for young children, a brand new café and meeting place, plus a new fitness studio on the first floor. The whole extension, covering some 120 square metres, will free up valuable space for more fitness classes and make the Centre an even more popular venue than it is now.Chairman of HLC Eric Holder said; “The extension has been designed by a local architect and we now have planning permission in place. Henfield Parish Council has shown its support by making

The future is colourful for Henfield Leisure Centre

the land available to us and we look to start building in the summer. The plans not only provide a safe, indoor place for children to play, but also a top quality cafeteria, which will serve hot and cold refreshments. The bespoke extension will allow far more activities to take place in the main hall and provide a new studio that will be created over part of the extension allowing far more classes.”The fundraising challenge is a truly local venture. Through the hard work of the Committee, staff, friends and members, a huge proportion of the money is already secured. There’s around £50k still to raise and the Leisure Centre are hoping local residents and businesses will help them to go this extra mile.

There are various events on the horizon and plenty of ways to get involved. The London to Brighton Night Bike Ride by a team of 17 members raised £1,600 for the Leisure Centre last year and hopes are high for a similar sum this year. There’s also the hugely popular Henfield’s Strongest Man event in September, which is fast becoming an important part of the weightlifting and strongman national calendar. It’s a fun family day out so do

come and watch the bulging muscles and some incredible feats of strength. The Tough Mudder on 26 September is not for the faint hearted – an Army obstacle course which involves lots of mud, water, scramble nets and even electric shocks! The ‘willing’ volunteers are all taking part to help the fundraising cause.Henfield Leisure Centre regular Tracey Prescott, who is part of the successful 777 fundraising team (which raised thousands for HLC and Clic Seargent with lots of different energetic challenges, including 7 treadmills completing a marathon each day for 7 days) is generously donating 50% of the cash she raises in her ‘500 miles for 50’ project. What a way to celebrate turning 50!Award winning author Peter James, who lives locally, is supporting the campaign and has donated generously. With your help too the plans can go ahead, and the creation of a safe place for children to be active, learn and explore will become a reality. The new changes will make a big difference and give Henfield a leisure centre to be really proud of. The committee have applied for an Aviva Community Fund grant, you can vote for free if you go to this link: www.aviva.co.uk/community-fund/. The deadline for voting is 31 May.Or you can donate via the Virgin Moneygiving link via the HLC website www.henfieldleisure.co.uk, or you could pop in or post a donation. Alternatively, you could support one of the intrepid fundraisers who are wading through mud, launching themselves from 50ft walls, en-during electric shocks – and exhibiting that HLC bound-less energy!Emma Osman

By the time you read this it will be only a couple of weeks until the 16th annual festival opens on 13 - 14 June!

This year well over 30 venues feature, a mixture of gardens and indoor venues. Of the 20 or so gardens to visit some are favourites from previous years and others will be open for the first time. Opening times are between 11am and 5pm each day and entry is free, although please note that not all venues will be open both days. With so many places to visit, refreshments are always an important part of the festival. Delicious lunches will be served and homemade cakes, tea and coffee will be available in some gardens. Pubs and cafes will be open too around the village. On the art side, painting, ceramics, jewellery, glass and garden sculpture as well as metalwork and pottery will be on show, with demonstrations and articles to buy. Local artists, who are asked to donate 10% of any sales to the chosen charity, lovingly make many of these items. The festival would not be complete without music and the variety of styles and artists will astound you. There will be Morris dancing, local choirs and solo singers, jazz, brass bands, folk groups, guitar lessons and handbell ringing among others. If this is not enough to whet your appetite, you might like to go bird watching on Saturday evening or attend Sunday family church service outside in the vicarage garden. There will be a trail for children on both days. If gardening is your thing, you will be able to swap plants in Red Oaks garden, or buy plants at other venues. This year the iconic blue foldout leaflet has been

Henfield festival of Garden & Artsredesigned as an A5 booklet, whilst still retaining its colour. This has allowed room for more information to be included as well as a useful page summarising new venues and places for lunch among others. As in recent years, there will be a manned information desk in the High Street. Most venues are readily walkable with the help of the re-drawn centrefold map, but the community minibus will offer a free dial-a-ride service on both days for those less able. Each year a local charity is chosen by the organisers to support through voluntary donations instead of an en-trance fee. This year your organisers decided to support the local scout group’s appeal again. The scout group is the oldest surviving one in the world and they are raising funds to help them rebuild their deteriorating hut. The grounds of the scout hut will be the location of the finale of the Festival of Garden & Arts this year in place of Red Oaks. We hope you enjoy the festival and welcome any feedback.David Hayes

My name means ‘bee’ in ancient Hebrew and friends say I live up to my name by being busy all the time! So it’s not surprising that I have always

been fascinated by all type of bees and dreamt of having a beehive in my garden. Not so easy living in a large town, or so I thought. News of the plight of bees and the impact on everyday foods should we lose these vital pollinators led me to research how I could help. There are many types of bees in the UK including several genuses of bumble bees and solitary bees. However I wanted to learn more about the European Honey Bee, Apis mellifera. After making enquiries and an exchange of emails I ventured to the Central Sussex Beekeeping Associations apiary in the Sussex countryside one sunny Saturday morning in July, Wellington boots in hand and wearing the suggested long sleeves and trousers. I thought we’d chat about the bees and I’d find more about the courses they run to train beekeepers – how wrong I was! After introductions and meeting the other ‘newbees’ we were lent suits to wear plus two pairs of latex gloves – one long pair first to go over the cuffs of our suits the second pair to give extra protection from possible stings. We were led to the hives and were guided through an inspection, each taking turns to prise apart the layers of the hive and lift out a frame covered in hundreds of bees. Inspections are carried out regularly in the spring and summer to check the health of the hive and ensure the queen is present and laying eggs. As well as honey the bees produce propolis and use this to fill any gaps in the hive, this is very sticky hence the gloves!

One visit and I was hooked and I now have two colonies on farmland near Horsham! If I can do it then you can too. I would urge that you join your local association before investing in bees and a hive as they will give you support and guidance on every aspect from necessary equipment (such as smokers and beesuits), to the siting of hives (whether at home or in an apiary) and how to harvest your honey crop. Here at Central Sussex as your friendly local beekeep-ing association we can help with guidance and support throughout the year as well as beginners training courses and the loan of books from our library. Our members range in age, experience and backgrounds and there will always be an experienced keeper close by to help. Weekly meetings are held at our training apiary from April through to autumn. Monthly meetings throughout the winter have a variety of talks on related topics. To find out more, or to arrange a visit to our train-ing apiary for some hands-on experience then please contact us via www.centralsussexbka.org.uk Debbie Rowland, Vice Chairman, Central Sussex Beekeeping Association

Gardening | JUNE 2015

There’s a definite ‘buzz’ in the air at Sussex Prairies as they gear up for their opening week for the 2015 season with a celebration of all things bee’utiful!

Pauline and Paul McBride and their team of volunteers have been ‘buzzy’ creating a fabulous event of all things bee related which is part of the Chelsea Fringe – an offshoot of the Chelsea Flower Show which celebrates the more quirky side of gardening – which will take place every afternoon (except Tuesday) during the week beginning 1 June.“Bees and honeybees in particular are crucial to gardens, horticulture and agriculture and there is a very important message about looking after and protecting our declining bee populations,” explained Pauline. “But at the same time we

Honey, I’ve found the bees!wanted to have a bit of fun with the event, which is why we have chosen the Austin Powers theme – Oh beehive!”As well as the largest beehive in the world, visitors will be able to visit ‘Austin Flowers’ in his bee house (created by the very talented volunteers Ron and Libby), feel a ‘bee’ and follow a bee trail of bee factoids to the Queen Honey Cake Tower (did you know a Queen Bee can live for six years laying up to a million eggs?). Best of all you will be able to get up close and personal to the hundreds of bees (and other insects) that are drawn to the nectar-rich flowers, trees and plants at Sussex Prairies. On the weekend of Friday 5 to Sunday 7 June Paul and Pauline will also be joined by local beekeepers

who will be demonstrating the art of beekeeping, local blacksmith and green woodworker Chris Burchill-Collins who will be making bee-related items and metal sculptor Alison Catchlove. There will also be various honey and beeswax products such as candles, soaps and cosmetics available to buy.Bees are hugely important and easily the most hardworking insect on the planet. For a start, bees pollinate one third of the food we eat including apples, strawberries, avocados, asparagus, broccoli, celery, squash, cucumbers, citrus fruit, peaches, kiwis, cherries, cranberries and melons. But that’s not all that bees do for us. They also create delicious honey, beeswax, royal jelly and help keep our ornamental gardens looking bee’utiful. However, bee populations have been declining for many years due to increased us of pesticides, parasites, disease and habitat loss. Without bees, our lives would be significantly different and this is why we should be championing this wonderful insect and helping to preserve our bee populations.Honeybees are crucial to gardens such as Sussex Prairies and Paul and Pauline have their own beehives in the garden. They have just started using ‘Warré’ hives which offer a more ‘hands off’ approach to beekeeping as Pauline explained: “ They are easy to build and simple to manage – you can just let the honeybees get on with making honey so it’s a more natural way of keeping bees.” In addition to hosting honeybees, the gardens also play host to a colony of bumblebees who spend their summer holidays at Sussex Prairies! Every summer bee researchers from the University of Sussex bring along a colony of bumblebees to spend the summer in the gardens. The bumblebees are fitted with special transmitters that provide the researchers with crucial information on the their ecology, behavior and conservation. So, to find out more about the humble honeybee why don’t you make a ‘beeline’ for Sussex Prairies this June - pollenicious baby!Sarah Butler

How to ‘bee’ friendlyBy creating a nectar and pollen-rich garden you can help to reverse the decline in honeybees, bumblebees and other pollinators. The Royal Horticultural Society has an extensive list of ‘perfect pollinator’ plants that will help get your garden buzzing all year round. You can download the full list from www.rhs.org.uk but here are just a few names of summer flowering plants to get you ‘buzzy’!

Henfield Village Fayre takes place on Saturday 18 July this year and from what we’ve seen of the plans, it’s shaping up to be another fun-filled

family extravaganza! The Parish Council has been working hard to make sure the 2015 Fayre will be a fun day out for everyone. All the usual Fayre favourites will be there including the Show Tent, the dog show, copious amounts of delicious refreshments from the tea tent and the beer tent, a fun fair as well as plenty of plenty of stalls from various village charities and groups offering fun activities. And this year there will be an exciting new addition to the Fayre: The Sheep Show! Described as ‘edu-tainment at it’s best’ the Sheep Show includes nine different breeds introduced on their own stage, sheep shearing demonstrations and even dancing sheep! This is just a snapshot of what will be happening: there will be so much more to discover on the day.Now is the time to be thinking about preparing your entries for the Show Tent. There is a huge range of categories for both adults and children so there is sure to be something for everyone. Budding Mary Berry’s may want to think

about entering one of the cooking and preserves categories; crafty and creative types may be tempted by the art, photography and craft categories; those with green fingers can get planting for the flower, fruit and vegetable categories; and finally, families can start designing their scarecrows for the popular family category! To find out more about the different categories, the competition rules and the deadline for submitting entries, you can pick up a Show Schedule from the Parish Office or download one from the Parish Council website. Here at BN5 magazine we love the Henfield Village Fayre! It’s a fabulous community event and is one of the things that makes living in Henfield so wonderful. We’ve got the date in our diary, so make sure you’ve got it in yours and we’ll see you there!Sarah Butler

Each year these delightful black and white birds return to our village to breed. They have spent the winter the other side of the Sahara, as far south as

South Africa, though more remains to be learned about their journey once they leave Europe. A round trip from the UK to their wintering grounds could be as much as 15,000 miles – an amazing distance for a bird weighing about 18g, which is less than an ounce and about the same weight as three 10p coins! The bad news of course is that their numbers have been declining, as is the case with many species that undertake long-distance migrations, like Cuckoo, Nightingale, Swallow and Turtle Dove. House Martins are amber-listed ‘Birds of Conservation Concern’. We can’t do much about what happens on their migrations or in their wintering areas, but we can try to look after them while they are here. This year there is a national survey being carried

out by the British Trust for Ornithology, and we’d love to do our own local survey to find out where our House Martins are nesting. Their nests are very distinctive: mud pellets cemented together (with spit!) into half cups, high up in the eaves of houses. The birds themselves are similar to Swallows, but have a much shorter tail fork, don’t have any red on the throat and have a diagnostic white rump. Close up their black feathers are actually a gorgeous glossy blue/black. They can have several broods during the five months or so they spend with us in the summer. Other species may use their nests – in one local garden House Sparrows raised a brood in a House Martin’s nest, but the martins managed to reclaim it later in the season! If you have House Martins in residence do let us know. Please fill in the form below, pop it into an envelope marked ‘Henfield Birdwatch’ and drop into Village Care or the Library, or send to Henfield Birdwatch, Lanacre, Blackgate Lane, Henfield BN5 9HA. experienced and capable builders and fitters, but I have found myself dusting off the Combi to create a bit of dust at the practice. Dust is something that greatly vexes veterinary nurses as they spend a lot of their time trying to make all the surfaces and floors as dust free as possible, so I have not been particularly popular. However, hopefully the investment in new anaesthetic monitoring equipment will be a satisfactory trade off!

The work at our Henfield branch was finished at the end of April. We are very grateful to Jenny Bunting, Retired Veterinary Surgeon and Trustee of the Retired Greyhound Trust for coming and “opening” our new facilities – you could tell she’d used some surgical scissors in her time by the way she cut the ribbon! We are also pleased to welcome two new nurses to the team to help staff Henfield – Claire Barton and Danielle Kaelin.

The branch is now open all day from 9am-6pm Monday to Friday. We now have a dedicated operating theatre, kennels for day patients, ultrasound and an in-house laboratory at the surgery. This means we can now perform surgical procedures, dental work, ultrasound scans and obtain blood results the same day. If you have a pet and Henfield is closer to you than our Partridge Green surgery, then please feel free to request an appointment at Henfield should your pet need to come in for a procedure. We look forward to seeing you!

The past few weeks have made me realise how much I take my drill(s) for granted. Not a common opener for a veterinary related

article, but I have found myself doing a fair bit of drilling recently!

4 weeks ago, I was doing a fracture repair that involved placing a bone plate and screws into a dog’s tibia. When applying a bone plate, holes have to be drilled in order to place the screws that hold it in place. Unfortunately, the batteries in my faithful rechargeable makita drill chose the middle of the operation to wheeze out their dying breath. When doing orthopaedics, you must always have a back-up plan and luckily the reserve drill was man enough to finish the job. I have since invested in a shiny new drill with TWO batteries so hopefully there will not be a repeat scenario!

My second (and not particularly interesting drill-related news) involved going through no less than 3 drill bits when doing dental work on a canine patient recently. One would have been forgiven for thinking that the dog in question had teeth made from concrete! The dental drills that we use run on compressed air and are very similar to those used by human dentists.

Finally, continuing on the drill theme, over the past 6 weeks we have been undertaking some “internal upgrades” at our Henfield branch. Most of this has been undertaken by a selection of very

Please feel free to contact Jonathan and Annelise Underwood MRCVS and Associates to discuss any aspect of your pets’ care at the practice.

The new National Plant Monitoring Scheme (NPMS), launching in spring 2015, will for the first time enable scientists to take an annual stock take of

the UK’s wild plants and their habitats, but to do this we need the public’s help. We are looking for volunteers to carry out surveys of wildflowers and their habitats that will provide robust evidence of which widespread plants are increasing or declining, as well as indicating the changing state of our most valued habitats such as grassland, fenland and even road verges. Plants are nature’s building blocks and this new monitoring scheme will sit alongside existing schemes for the UK’s birds and butterflies to help us understand more about how the countryside is

changing. The search is now on to find 2,000 volunteers to take part in the NPMS who will play a vital role in gathering information. Together the volunteers will monitor wild plants in 28 important habitats, ranging from hedgerows and meadows to salt marsh and scree slopes.Hayley New, from Plantlife said: “The NPMS is hugely enjoyable and over 400 volunteers have helped us set up the new

Every flower counts - Volunteers needed for annual stock take of UK’s wild flowers

scheme. It’s easy to do and everyone will receive free training and guidance plus support from the partnership for volunteers who have queries, as well as web support and illustrated guidance notes – so volunteers will have the perfect survey tool kit to get them started!”How does the NPMS work? Volunteers will be able to choose from three options depending on their level of expertise: recording from a short or an extended list of target species in each habitat or recording all species they find in their plots. Each volunteer will be given a 1 km square with a grid showing up to 25 locations. Surveyors will be asked to visit three of those locations and carry out surveys in square plots and then identify two linear features such as hedgerows, rivers and road verges and survey these locations too. The squares have been randomly chosen, but with a focus on squares containing habitats of interest.Who can take part? Anyone interested in nature who can identify plants, or who is keen to learn. Different levels of participation ensure that all who are keen can participate: you do not have to be an experienced botanist. You will only need to identify between 25-30 ‘indicator species’ per habitat. These are distinctive species specially selected to allow us to monitor changes in the countryside. For more information on the scheme and how to volun-teer see www.npms.org.ukHayley New, Plantlife

Having an employment tribunal claim land on your desk at any time is an unpleasant experience. Business owners will be aware that legal

proceedings in any shape or form are a strain on the purse strings, management time and resources, as well as emotionally. Once the shock and surprise at the audacity of your former employee bringing a claim has waned, you will need to think about the best way to move things forward. Should you tackle things yourself or is expert legal help required? What are the costs likely to be? What should you do you do first?Quick Resolutions Changes in legislation in April 2014 now mean that the first you will know about a potential Tribunal Claim is a telephone call from the Arbitration, Conciliation and Advisory Service (ACAS), explaining that you may be receiving an employment tribunal claim, and giving you the opportunity to resolve the dispute before proceedings are commenced. ACAS conciliate on potential claims around unfair dismissal, discrimination, redundancy payments, deduction from wages or unpaid notice/holiday pay, rights to time off or flexible working or equal pay. At this point, you will be given some information about the potential claim. Commercial Decision?Ways of resolving the dispute at this stage can be fairly imaginative and can include hearing a grievance or a late internal appeal hearing, consideration of reinstatement back into the role in a dismissal claim, payment of a sum of money and/or potentially a reference to end the dispute. To some extent this depends on what your former employee is after. You may feel that getting embroiled in a protracted dispute, however unmeritorious, is not worth your time or energy when you have a business to run, and that settlement on a commercial basis is the best way forward. If you do not feel there are any grounds for the claim, or that you are able to defend it successfully, you might want to consider rejecting the offer to settle at this stage. The employee has to pay to bring an employment tribunal claim so you might want to see whether they are prepared to put their money where there mouth is before settling. The initial fees are £250 and then further fees of £950 to £1,200.

If you do not decide to settle straightaway, there are always other opportunities to compromise throughout the life of the case. If the claim is not settled now, you can expect to receive the ‘ET1’ form providing a written outline of the employee’s case. There is a strict timetable to respond and if you overlook the date or fail to respond a decision will be made against you. It is vitally important to comply with tribunal deadlines because delay can be a costly mistake. This might be the time when you consider maybe taking some legal advice to prepare your defence, advice whether to settle the case and assess the value of the case. It is important, where possible, to get the best advice available. Legal insurance can be a lifesaver in these situations. Paul Samrah
