IMPORTANT: If your vehicle is equipped with a locking steering column, secur- ing the column lock lever in the engine compartment in the full up position will allow the steering wheel to be locked and unlocked and the ignition key to be removed. WARNING: This allows the steering wheel to be locked WHENEVER the ignition key is turned to the “lock” position WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOV- ING, OR AT ANY OTHER TIME. Se- curing the steering column lock lever in any other position will both PREVENT the steering wheel from locking and removal of the ignition key. INSTALLATION NOTE: If you are installing this shifter with a four speed automatic transmis- sion, you must remove the blocker pin and the two e-clips indicated in Fig- ures 1 and 3. Removing this blocker pin gives the shifter four forward posi- tions rather than three. For Ford AOD four speed transmissions do not re- move this blocker pin and the two e- clips, since this transmission has only three forward positions. Also do not remove the blocker pin and the two e- clips for three speed automatic trans- missions. STEP 1. Remove the stock shift link- age; Column Shifters: Remove all rods, levers or cables from the column and the transmission. Place the column shift lever in the Park position. Remove the pin holding the shift lever in the column and remove the lever assem- bly. If your vehicle is equipped with a locking steering column, secure the column lock lever in the full up position. WARNING: This allows the steering wheel to be locked and ignition key removed WHENEVER the ignition key is turned to the “lock” position WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING, OR AT ANY OTHER TIME. Console Shifters: Remove the shifter mechanism from the console. Discon- nect the rod or the cable from the transmission. Remove the cable bracket if equipped. If there is a cable or linkage from the console shifter or the transmission to the steering col- umn lock, it must be blocked in the Park position as described above. NOTE: Shifter installation may require console modification or complete con- sole removal depending on the space available in your vehicle. STEP 2. Pull the carpet away from the floorboard where the shifter is to be mounted. If the vehicle has a bench type seat, move the seat to the full forward position. Place the shifter on the floor with the stick shifted to the rearmost gate position. Locate the shifter for ease and convenience of operation (See Figure 2). Make sure the trigger and T-handle clear the dash with the shifter in the Park position. Mark the position of four mounting holes on the floor. STEP 3. Drill four 9/32" mounting holes where marked. Temporarily mount the shifter in place using washers as re- quired to get it level. Do not bend the mounting brackets on the bottom of the shifter. Mark the location for the shifter cable hole, 3" ahead of the left front shifter mounting hole. Drill or cut a 1-1/2" diameter cable hole in the floorboard. NOTE: Some floorboards are extremely thin and will not ad- equately support the shifter mecha- nism when bolted to the floor. For those vehicles we recommend that you fabricate a stiffener plate for addi- tional strength. STEP 4. Install (but do not secure) the carpet back to it’s original position. Cut holes in the carpet for the mount- ing holes and the cable. DO NOT use a drill bit to make holes in the carpet. To use the B&M Megashift-er with the Ford AOD transmissionsyou will need the optional accessorykit #40496.

Please read the instructions andreview the illustrations thoroughly be-fore beginning the installation.

The mechanical components of thisshifter are precision made and as-sembled at our factory. Any modifica-tion or disassembly of these parts cancause the shifter to malfunction andwill void the warranty. You should dis-assemble only those items outlined inthe instructions.

The vehicle should be about 2 feetoff the ground for ease of installation.Use jack stands, wheel ramps or avehicle lift. Make sure the vehicle isfirmly supported before attempting towork on it.IMPORTANT: If your vehicle is equippedwith a locking steering column, secur-ing the column lock lever in the enginecompartment in the full up position willallow the steering wheel to be lockedand unlocked and the ignition key to beremoved.WARNING: This allows the steeringwheel to be locked WHENEVER theignition key is turned to the “lock”position WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOV-

ING, OR AT ANY OTHER TIME. Se-curing the steering column lock lever inany other position will both PREVENTthe steering wheel from locking andremoval of the ignition key.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: If you are installing this shifterwith a four speed automatic transmis-sion, you must remove the blocker pinand the two e-clips indicated in Fig-ures 1 and 3 . Removing this blockerpin gives the shifter four forward posi-tions rather than three. For Ford AODfour speed transmissions do not re-move this blocker pin and the two e-clips, since this transmission has onlythree forward positions. Also do notremove the blocker pin and the two e-clips for three speed automatic trans-missions.STEP 1. Remove the stock shift link-age;Column Shifters : Remove all rods, levers or cables from the column andthe transmission. Place the columnshift lever in the Park position. Removethe pin holding the shift lever in thecolumn and remove the lever assem-bly. it may be a mechanical interlock in thesteering column that prevents the keyfrom turning to the Start position unlessthe shifter is in the Park or Neutral posi-tion. Identify the type of neutral safetysystem you have. If the key will not turnto the Start position unless the stockshifter is in Park or Neutral, you have amechanical interlock type, otherwiseyou have a neutral safety switch type. Ifyou have a neutral safety switch, locate

the switch and identify the neutral safetywires (engine will not crank unless thesewires are connected together). With ei-ther type, disconnect the battery groundcable to prevent accidental shorts. If youhave a neutral safety switch, disconnectand extend both wires from the GMswitch to the switch on the shifter. If youhave a mechanical interlock cut the wirethat goes from the start position on theignition switch to the solenoid on the

correctly adjusted. Install the cotterkey supplied with the shifter into theswivel and spread the key ends.

If you have a problem, DO NOTFORCE THE SHIFTER, this will dam-age the cable, the shifter or the trans-mission. Simply start at the beginningand carefully check all your steps.STEP 14. On GM vehicles, the neutralsafety switch may be located on theshifter (steering column or console), or

STEP 15. If you have not already doneso, remove the nut and the lockwasherholding the downshift linkage onto thedownshift lever shaft. The downshiftlever is the outer lever on C-4, C-5, C-6 and AOD transmissions. Pull thelever off the shaft and allow the linkageto hang free. Remove and discard thestock shift linkage rods. Some C-6 andall (late) C-4 and C-5 transmissionshave a neutral safety/backup lightswitch on the transmission shift lever. If your transmission is so equipped,

remove the two bolts holding the switchin place and slide it off the shift shaft.Disconnect the switch at the factoryplug and discard it.STEP 16. Install the B&M selector le-ver (See Figure 6 or 7) . Note: TheB&M lever must point downward forproper operation. If the stock shift leveron your transmission points down, youwill have to remove the lower part of thestock arm by cutting it off to clear theB&M lever (See Figure 6 ) . Install theB&M selector lever onto the shift shaftof the transmission. Align the selectorlever so when it points straight down ittravels equal arcs in both directionsfrom the center, then tighten the 1/4"-20 x 1 1/2" pinch bolt and nut. The levershould travel smoothly from front toback with a positive click in each gearposition. Make sure the O-ring is inposition on the downshift shaft andinstall the downshift lever in position onthe shaft. Install the lockwasher andthe nut and tighten securely. The down-shift lever must operate smoothly. Re-connect the downshift linkage.STEP 17.Cable bracket installation:AOD: Instructions for the AOD areincluded with the optional installationkit, Part No. 40496.C-4, C-5: Remove the two lower boltsfrom the rear servo cover. and carefully check all your steps.IMPORTANT: Do not froce the shifterto over travel into the Park position. This will move the shifter into GM Parkposition and will damage the cable orthe transmission.STEP 20.On Ford vehicles, the neu-tral safety/backup light switch is lo-cated on the transmission (or on thesteering column on some early ve-hicles). If the vehicle has an AODtransmission the neutral safety/backuplight switches on the B&M shifter willNOT be used. The neutral safety/backuplight switch on the AOD transmissionswill continue to function normally.

On the C-4 and C-5 transmissions,it is necessary to completely remove

the stock neutral safety/backup lightswitch in order to install the B&Mtransmission shift lever. On C-4, C-5and C-6 transmissions, it will be nec-essary to hook up the neutral safety/backup light switches on the B&MMegashifter . Locate and identify theneutral safety (the engine will not crankunless these wires are connected to-gether), and reverse light wires. Dis-connect the battery ground cable be-fore beginning to wire the neutral safetyand the reverse light switches. Reroutethe wires to the B&M Megashifter .Strip 1/4" of insulation off the wires andinstall the supplied slip-on terminals.Crimp the terminals onto the wiresusing a crimping tool or pliers. Con-

nect the neutral safety wires to theLOWER switch and the reverse lightwires to the UPPER switch (See Fig-ure 1) . Tape the terminal connectionsto prevent shorts. Reconnect the bat-tery ground cable, disconnect the coilwire and set the parking brake. Checkthe switch operation by attempting tostart the motor in each shifter position. The starter must crank only whenthe shifter is in the Park or Neutralposition . Check the backup light op-eration when the shifter is shifted to theReverse position. Adjust the switchesif required. Reconnect the coil wire. Goto Step 27 .

STEP 21.If you have not already doneso, loosen the pinch bolt on the throttlelever on the transmission. This is thelever on the small diameter shaft. Prythe lever off with a screwdriver andallow the linkage to hang free. Removeand discard the stock shift lever andthe stock shift linkage. Install the B&Mselector lever in position and tightenthe pinch bolt securely (See Figure8). Make sure the lever is not pusheddown so far as to touching the trans-mission case. This will cause the leverto bind on the case. The lever shouldtravel smoothly from front to back witha positive click in each gear position.Install the stock throttle lever in posi-tion on the small diameter shaft asremoved and tighten the pinch boltsecurely. The throttle lever must oper-ate smoothly.STEP 22.Remove the two transmis-sion oil pan bolts directly below theshift lever. Install the cable bracket inposition with the two spacers betweenthe pan and the bracket (See Figure8). (If your transmission is equippedwith a cast aluminum oil pan thesespacers can be omitted.) Install thetwo 5/16-18 x 1.00" pan bolts suppliedand tighten to 12-13 lb.ft. Do not over-tighten as this can damage the pangasket.STEP 23. Route the shifter cable ac-cording to Figure 4 . Avoid kinks andsharp bends and route the cable awayfrom hot engine or exhaust parts.

Remove the two rubber boots, onelarge nut, and a large lockwasher fromthe threaded end of the shifter cable.Slide the end of the cable into the cablebracket. Besure that the swivel will slide freely inand out of the hole in the selector lever.

With the swivel in the selector le-ver, move the shifter to the Park posi-tion, as far forward as the shifter will gowithout forcing it. (The shifter has fur-ther travel that is used to reach the GMPark position but is not used on theChrysler transmissions. Trying to forcethe shifter will damage the cable.) Theshift lever on the transmission shouldbe all the way back. Check to see thatthe swivel will slide freely in and out ofthe hole in the lever in this position. Ifit does not slip in freely, adjust theswivel slightly until it will slip into thehole in the lever in both the Low and thePark positions. Operate the shifterthrough all the gear positions. Checkto make sure the swivel will slide in andout of the selector lever hole in eachgear position. Install the cotter keysupplied with the shifter into the swiveland spread the key ends.

If you have a problem, DO NOTFORCE THE SHIFTER, this will dam-age the cable, the shifter or the trans-mission. Simply start at the beginningand carefully check all your steps.IMPORTANT: Do not froce the shifterto over travel into the Park position. This will move the shifter into GM Parkposition and will damage the cable orthe transmission.STEP 25.Check the operation of thethrottle linkage again. The linkage mustoperate smoothly with no bind. All thetransmissions using automatic valvebodies must have the throttle linkageconnected and operating, or transmis-sion damage will result.STEP 26.Neutral safety/backup lightswitch.’66-’68 : The neutral safety switch willcontinue to function normally. It will notbe necessary to hook up the neutralsafety switch wires on the shifter. Dis-connect the battery ground cable be-fore wiring the backup light switch.Locate the original backup light switchon the steering column or the consoleshifter. Run these wires to the topswitch on the B&M Megashifter (See

Figure 1) . Reconnect the ground wireand check the light for proper opera-tion. Adjust the switches on the shifterif required.’69 and Later: The neutral safety/backup switch is located on the trans-mission and will continue to functionnormally. It will not be necessary toconnect any wires to the switches onthe shifter.STEP 27.Place the tower over theshifter mechanism until the bottomedge of the tower touches the floor. Putthe shifter cover and the indicator cablethrough the opening in the top of thetower. Hold the tower level to the shifterwith the bottom of the tower touchingthe highest surface on the floor it willcome into contact with (See Figure9). Use a ruler to measure the distanceX from the underside of the tower to thetower mounting brackets on the shiftermechanism.STEP 28.Set a pair of dividers at thedistance X, measured in step 27. Holdthe tower level to the shifter mecha-nism with the bottom of the towertouching the highest surface on thefloor it will come into contact with.Holding the tower in position, placeone leg of the divider against the floor

snaps in from the top with tabs insert-ing into slots at either end of the win-dow opening. Place the shifter in thePark position then remove the T-Handlefrom shifter. Place the cover plate overthe stick and onto the top of the tower.Route the indicator cable as shown inFigure 10 . (If the cable is not routedthis way, the indicator may bind.) Runthe shifter through all of the gears tocheck the operation of the indicator. Ifthe indicator needs adjustment, loosenthe screws holding the indicator cableclamp to the cover plate and slide thecable bracket to adjust the indicatorposition. (Retighten these screws care-fully since they are threaded into plas-tic.) Attach the cover plate to the towerwith four Phillips head screws.STEP 31.Slide the boot over the stickand install it into the cover plate. Afterthe boot is installed in the cover plateand into the stick, install the T-Handleand the jam nut. Tighten the jam nutwhen the handle is properly oriented.

OPERATION

The B&M Megashifter normallyfunctions as a straight gate detentshifter from Park to Reverse to Neutralto Drive and as a ratchet shifter fromNeutral to all forward gears. Refer tothe following instructions for properoperation:

while the other touches the tower (SeeFigure 9) . Using the dividers, scribe aline around the tower that follows thecontour of the floorboard. Remove thetower and trim at the scribe line usingtin snips. Once the tower is properlytrimmed, install it using two flat headsheet metal screws. The indicator cableshould be routed out the top of thetower on the right side while the toweris being installed.STEP 29.Install the indicator light bulbin its socket on the shifter cover plate.Run a length of wire from the vehicle’sinstrument light circuit to one of thewires. Connect the other wire to a goodchassis ground. A shifter mountingbolt should be satisfactory.STEP 30.Snap the shift position win-dow into the cover plate. The window

IMPORTANT

Before installing the T-handle ontothe shifter put Loc-tite on the threadsof the stick. The aluminum of the T-handle may gall on the threads of thestick and make it impossible to re-move the T-handle from the stick. Ifthis occurs it can cause the stick tobreak if you use excessive force whileattempting to remove the T-handlefrom the stick.
