THE WORLD IS YOUR
CLASSROOM
2015/2016
ear Parents and Students,
We are delighted to introduce our 2015-16 Global High School program. As
Canada’s leading private school by enrolment and the leading provider of
accredited international education, Blyth takes pride in the quality of both
our programs and the students who choose to participate in them.
Each year we look across the globe for new experiences for our students. In
2015-16, we have added Christchurch in New Zealand, Granada in Nicaragua,
and a variety of exciting and interesting Optional Excursions to complement
the program. In all, we will visit 10 countries on three continents and offer
more than 30 courses, including four new AP courses.
As we continue to expand our program offerings, Blyth remains committed
to providing unparalleled learning opportunities to students of all interests
and backgrounds.
We welcome you to the Blyth family, and invite you to explore our program.
Yours Truly,
Sam Blyth, MA (Cambridge)
D
ur mission is to provide a school without walls: a safe and structured environment
in which students flourish on both a personal and an academic level, while
realizing that opportunities in education are boundless. With caring and
empathetic staff who focus on personalized learning and experiential education
in very small classes, students are inspired to explore their cultural surroundings
and excel in their academic courses. Blyth’s on-site teams provide outstanding
leadership and teaching, as well as 24/7 support.
Blyth Academy’s Global High School program is open to Grade 11, Grade 12
and gap-year students to travel and study abroad. Blyth teachers and staff
create a safe and rewarding learning environment for students that combines
classroom study with experiential learning. Students will earn high school credits
and experience the transformation that comes with travel: appreciating and
accepting other cultures, adapting to new surroundings, and recognizing that
we are one small part of a very large planet. Students enrol for an eight-week
term, a two-term semester or the full four terms, earning two credits per term.
O
THE STUDENTSAll of our students are between 15 and 19 years old. They come from public, separate, and
private schools across Canada, the United States, and beyond. They bring a wonderful mix of
ethnic, religious, and social backgrounds to our program.
ROOMMATES AND CLASSMATESWe understand that some students choose to travel together, and as such would like to
be roommates. After registration, you will be sent a Personal Information Form that asks
for roommate and classmate requests. Most roommate and classmate requests can be
accommodated, but cannot be guaranteed.
HEALTH AND WELL-BEINGThe students’ health and well-being is our primary concern. After registration, on the Personal
Information Form, parents are required to inform Blyth of any student physical, mental, medical,
and dietary concerns or issues so that staff on the program are aware of their specific needs.
ACCOMMODATIONBlyth chooses accommodation that maintains a balance of proximity to sites, public transit,
and comfort. Blyth uses hotel accommodation for the majority of our itineraries. Certain terms
also feature stays in student residences within local universities. Some hotels have pools. Most
hotels have WiFi access in common areas such as lobbies and restaurants. Some hotels have
WiFi or cable Internet within the rooms. Air-conditioned rooms will be provided, where available.
Students will stay in single, twin, triple, or quad rooms depending on the locations. The majority
of our hotels have been used by Blyth for many years, and hotel staff are very accommodating.
MEALSBreakfast and dinner will be provided as part of your program, leaving the opportunity to
explore and purchase lunch locally. Students and staff eat together at breakfast and dinnertime.
Typically, breakfast consists of a buffet or a continental breakfast with a set number of choices.
This may include a croissant, orange juice, cereal and yogurt. Typically, dinner consists of a
buffet or plated meal. An example would be Spaghetti Bolognese, green salad, bread, and fruit
for dessert. Most dietary restrictions can be accommodated and should be outlined on the
Personal Information Form provided after registration, prior to departure.
EXCURSIONSBlyth Academy Global High School offers many included field trips and excursions designed to
relate directly to material covered in class. Many students find that our program has completely
re-enthused them about the learning process and has provided them with great preparation
for university.
BLYTH ACADEMY GLOBAL HIGH SCHOOL: YOUR TYPICAL DAYAll programs are structured to provide students with the best in academic instruction and
exposure to the cultures and locations we visit. Typically, students follow a schedule that sees
