A warm welcome to the 2009-2010school year… and we anticipate
another exciting year ahead. Constructionwas underway, once again, this pastsummerasworkonValenta Stadiumbegan. When you “Come Home to Naz” for home-coming weekend, and hopefully many ofyou will return, you will have theopportunity to see one of the fineststadiums in the high school arena!I’m happy to see that through the efforts
of the Alumni Advisory Board, Career Day isback. On September 30th, many of you willshare your work experience with ourJuniors and Seniors.Since Reunion and Homecoming are
being held at the same time this year(October 9th – 11th), I hope you will be ableto come out for the many activities that areplanned. Milestone classes are hostingtheir celebrations off site on Saturdayand on Sunday plan on attending theFamily/Alumni Mass in our Auditorium, followed by a delicious (and complimenta-ry) breakfast in the Dining Hall.In these tough, economic times we, too,
must cut back on some of our costs.Consequently, we will only publish twoissues of Blueprint. In lieu of an AnnualReport, a report of giving is included in thisissue. However, the 2008-2009 financialreport will not be made available until thenext issue.I thank you for the many ways in which
you support the mission of NazarethAcademy and the Congregation ofSt. Joseph. This year are theme is “BridgingOur Differences… that all may be one.”I invite you to let that become your focus aswell.
This fall, Nazareth Academy will proudlypresent our play, “Dead Man Walking.” It
is part of a larger projectwhich involves over-all education and dialogue centering aroundthe issue of the death penalty. It is based onthe true life story of Sister Helen Prejean, aSister of Saint Joseph. Sister Helen ministersto prisoners, most of whomare on death row.Her story tugs at the very core of our beliefsystem. It sparks much discussion, reflectionand opportunity to confront our own fearsand our own sense of justice. NazarethAcademy students will have the opportunityto engage in classroom study and discussionsat many levels. They will also have theopportunity tomeet Sister Helen in person asshe will be speaking to our student body onOctober 22nd. The surrounding communitywill be invited tomeet SisterHelen that sameevening as we co-sponsor her speakingpresentation with The Well (another CSJsponsoredministry). As written in the “Play Project Notes” by
Elaine Kloser and Jeff Hall from a Jesuit HighSchool in Portland, Oregon: “When we metwith Sister Helen Prejean, she told us that herreason for encouraging TimRobbins to createa stage versionof her story centers onadesireto keep the dialogue going. Shewants peopleto talk. She wants them to talk about thedeath penalty, of course… it’s her cause. Butshe also wants people—especially youngpeople—to talk about how they can affectchange in their world, on a wide range ofissues thatmay be important to them.”Those of us who have been lucky enough
to have been educated by or work with theSisters of Saint Joseph should not besurprised. This desire is a critical componentof their educational philosophy… and achallenge to all of their graduates.

Editor’s Note
It has been a pleasure sending three issues a year of Blueprint out to over16,000 alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents and friends of Nazareth. It is no great surprise the economic crisis has affected us all in differentways. We have made the decision to produce Blueprint two times a year asopposed to three so youwill now receive issues in the fall and winter.
While enrollment for 2009/2010 is up, we are trying to balance fiscalresponsibility by cutting our budget and applying those savings to financial aid. It is ourhope that those wanting to attend Nazareth even during these hard financial times willhave the opportunity. Thank you to all who help this cause. Together we are buildingconfidence and creating leaders! — Cissy Thunander, Blueprint Editor

Sounds of construction continue to surround NazarethAcademy, but by the time you read this article, construction
will be replaced with a more familiar sound of a roaring crowdand smacking pads as the Roadrunners 2009-10 athletic seasongets off to a grand start in the newly constructed Valenta Stadium. As the Roadrunners’ season begins, the transformation of
Valenta Stadium to a premiere athletic facility will be complete. With summer camps in the rearview mirror and the footballseason in full swing, the Nazareth community can finally takeadvantage of this tremendous gift.Last fall, Nazareth Academy was informed that they were
named as a beneficiary of a substantial bequest made by JoanValenta. Ms. Valenta communicated to her executor that she wasimpressed with the Nazareth students in her community and feltthat a greatway to impact the futurewas to invest in children.OurNazareth students and student athletes were the investment shebelieved would reap themost return.Highlights of Valenta Stadium include premium seating
options and increased seating overall, a new building for conces-sions and restrooms and an enlarged pressbox with two filmingplatforms as well as premium suites. Paired with our upgradedFieldTurf® Spirit Field, Valenta Stadium completes the goal ofsecuring Nazareth Academy’s place as the finest athletic field intheWestern Suburbs.Premium seating options are still available. Proceeds from the
seat sales will benefit financial aid. Please contact the capitalcampaign office at 708-387-8542 for additional information.

Sr. Mary Southard, CSJ (class of 1954)has sent students of the three
Congregation of Saint Joseph sister schools“On the Journey” with her skillfullydesigned medal of St. Joseph. This year, forthe first time, each member of the class of2009 from Nazareth Academy, LaGrangePark, IL and St. Joseph Academy, Cleveland,OH received this medal at their graduationceremonies. St. Joseph Academy, BatonRouge, LAwill distribute the samemedal totheir students during a yet to be deter-mined ceremony. Sr. Mary designed themedal specifically for these three schools –it is a unique keepsake for our students. The Joseph “On the Journey” medal is a
replica of a larger statue which can befound in front of the Congregation ofSt. Joseph Center in LaGrange Park, Illinois.“When I was asked to create a Josephstatue, I was inspired by St. Joseph’scharacteristics,” said Sr. Mary recently inan interview. “We realize that as humanswe are part of an evolutionary universe inwhich everything is always movingforward. In most stories, Joseph is goingsomewhere, to Bethlehem, to Egypt; thisinvites us to participate in the greatjourney of life.”The St. Joseph medal is a smaller yet
influential symbol to give our students.Graduation brings each class to a new jour-ney in life and it is the hope for Nazarethgraduates, that this medal will be areminder of the values of their Catholiceducation. St. Joseph, our patron, wasprotector, nurturer and provided for theholy family of Nazareth, and throughoutthese high school years we have entrustedour journey to his care. St. Joseph’s prayer isan integral part of the daily routine atNazareth. It is most fitting to send ourgraduates forth with his protection.
On the JourneyThe St. Joseph Medal
OOmost glorious St. Joseph,my patron,I entrust my heart,my body,my needs,my hopes, now and in the future to your powerful protection.
Help me St. Joseph to lead a pure and blameless life.

Creating aNAMEDScholarship
Nazareth Academy truly appreciatesthose who have created Named
Scholarships in memory or in honor of afamily member, friend, mentor, or col-league. The students who benefit from aNamed Scholarship will go forward in lifewith a quality education and the knowl-edge that a kind person helped them alongthe way.The first step in creating a Named
Scholarship is to determine whether youwould like to establish an “endowed” or an“annual” scholarship.
Endowed Scholarship funds aredesigned to be permanent and perpetualand can be created with gifts totaling aminimum of $25,000, contributed in full atthe outset or with an initial commitmentthat is added to over time until the endow-ment level of $25,000 is attained. The
principal of the fund is invested to produceincome, and an annual award is madeto a student(s). The principal remainsuntouched, so the endowment can last intoperpetuity.Annual Scholarships can be establishedwith a minimum outright gift of $4,000 ora pledge of $4,000with an annual commit-ment of $1,000 per year. The annual gift isawarded to a student over the four-yearperiod. Unlike Endowed Scholarships, anAnnual Scholarship is not a permanentfund and is awarded only as long as youchoose to contribute to the fund.
EstablishingScholarship CriteriaAs a scholarship donor, you may choose
the name of the scholarship as well as thecriteria. The Development Office staff is
available to help you create the criteria foryour scholarship. Endowed and AnnualScholarships at Nazareth Academy areawarded to deserving students based uponfinancial need, areas of interest, leadership, academic achievement or other set criteria. As a scholarship donor you can choose
to have a relationship with your studentrecipient(s) and their family. The studentswill send notes throughout the yearinforming you of their interests andachievements. You will also have theopportunity to meet at our annualScholarship Mass and Dinner held in thespring at Nazareth. For additional informa-tion regarding Named Scholarship oppor-tunities please contact Angela Broucek,Director of Development (708-387-8547).
* Please see page 30 where we acknowledgeNamed Scholarships at Nazareth.

JaneMeehanwas a generous and coura-geous woman. Her named scholarship,
set up by daughter, Carol Buran (1961), hon-ors a woman whose tenacity forged a lifefilled with adversity. Jane worked atNazareth from 1976 to 1989 as assistant tothree principals and business manager.“Even though life was not easy for mygrandmother,” said Julie Mehring, (Jane’sgranddaughter) “she had a smile on herface and was always positive.” JaneMeehan’s story is remarkable.Jane graduated from Harper High
School in 1936 at the age of 16 and went towork for Art Hintz, a realtor and land devel-oper in Chicago and the suburbs. Within afew years Janemet andmarried the love ofher life, William E. Meehan. The time wastenuous. William was drafted and enteredtheArmyAir Corps.Duringhis 6thmission,flying a B24, Lt.Meehanwas killed in actionduring the attack on Ploesti, Romania. Janereturned to Chicago and livedwith her par-ents in a small rented apartment to awaitthe birth of her daughter, Carol.Jane never remarried. Through the years
she worked for Chicago Mortgage Co.,Divine Providence, Divine Infant andNazareth Academy. “Jane Meehan was awonderful person with whom to work, because she could be a colleague and afriend,” said Sr. Marianne Race. “She wasresourceful, smart, wise, and resilient.”It was her resourcefulness and connec-
tion with Art Hintz that brought her toWestchester, where she purchased land tobuild her own home. Jane, as a single par-ent, proudly raised her daughter, workedfull time and attended classes at DePaulUniversity. Completing a lifelong dream, she graduatedwith aB.A. in Education afterten years.Jane died in 1996. “It is because of her
quiet strength and dedication to educationthat we, her family, decided to establish anamed scholarship,” said her daughterCarol. “We have been so pleased with therecipients – I’m sure Mom is smiling!”
