What can go wrong on a trip to Philmont?Lots of things if you do it yourself! This is NOT like taking your Troop to summer camp!!

Transportation • Hire the wrong transportation company o No insurance, poor maintenance program, no DOT license o Hidden charges - taxes, fuel surcharges, extra hourly charges o No back up vehicles o Delays in pickup are common • Renting vans and driving your self o Can’t get 10-12 people and backpacks into one 15 passenger van o Advisors tired from travel to the Southwest – a very dangerous situation o Large vans for group travel typically not covered by your auto insurance policy

Lodging • Hotel shuttle takes hours to get kids and backpacks from airport to hotel • Budget motel not in a safe neighborhood • Motel set up poorly for adequate supervision of youth - exterior room doors, scout rooms spread out • Not enough rooms reserved and adults are two to a bed; rooms not ready for check in • Military base or gym floor - hot, uncomfortable, and no separation of youth/adult and male/female

Meals • Hotel breakfast not good, not set up for a group and takes longer than it should resulting in late arrival at Philmont • Fast food not very nutritious, takes longer than planned, and more costly than expected • Advisors must carry lots of cash to pay meal costs for group

Activities • Advisors too focused on tour logistics and miss opportunities for team building and camaraderie.
