IN MEMORIAM CDR George J. Thompson

Passed away on May 5, 2016

Changes To Housekeeping Hours – We’re looking very hard at processes and procedures as we begin our new fiscal year all in an effort to ensure efficiency and serve as good stewards of your funds.  We’ve talked with your Resident Council and have solicited feedback from several residents and our staff to accomplish this task in our various departments. One of our initial actions will be implementing new procedures/hours for housekeeping services starting Tuesday, Jul 5. The new times will be based on the industry standard of square footage vs apartment style and will still allow for adequate time to clean your apartment using the current housekeeping checklist, now standardized at both campuses. The checklist will also be available at the Front Desk or from your housekeeper to ensure we all know what should be done in each apartment.   As we developed our plan, we queried several other CCRC’s and Leading Age.  We learned our new times/checklists are comparable or better than most other CCRC’s in Texas and across the country. Within the next few weeks, you’ll be receiving a notice from Housekeeping that will let you know what your allocated time is as well as your new times.  We don’t plan on any major changes to the weekly schedule, but you may see some changes based on the new timelines. We also plan on building travel time into the new schedule so housekeepers should not leave early or arrive late. This is a huge undertaking that Jackie and her team have been tasked to implement. Please do not shoot the messenger (Jackie). If you have issues/concerns about the new times/schedules, please contact Resident Services.  We appreciate your patience as we make these adjustments to the housekeeping schedules.Calling All World War II Vets/Spouses – The 4th of July Parade Committee & Blue Skies would like to honor our WWII Vets and/or their spouses during the 4th of July Parade (which takes place at Village West on Saturday, Jun 25). Please call me at 568-3301 if you/your spouse were a Vet of WWII, or if you know of anyone here who is.Trash Pick Up – Please ensure all trash is placed in bags before it is placed in your toter.Tower Residents – Have a large item you need disposed of? Just give Environmental Services a call at 568-3241; we’ll be happy to dispose of items for you.Dabblers Schedule – The Dabblers last meeting before their summer hiatus is Wednesday, May 25 at 1:30pm in the Arts & Crafts room. They’ll resume their meetings in September.Topic Upon Special Request – A resident asked…what Holidays are exempt from allowing guests’ meals to be charged to a residents’ meal plan? Answer: Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

3 Deadline: Friday, May 27 @ Noon - [email protected]

Safety – How seriously do you take Fire Alarms? Sadly, based on the alarm that went off in the Towers a few weekends ago, a lot of residents do not take alarms seriously enough!! When you hear an alarm, please follow the instructions you’ve been given. Do not ignore them and chalk it up to a “false alarm.” Reminder: if you’re in the Towers and hear an alarm, the “safe zone” is the Stairwells. You do not have to walk down the stairs…just get to the stairwell landing and await instructions. If necessary, Fire Department personnel will assist with evacuating (getting down the stairs). Please do not place yourself/others at risk by going down the stairs. If you’re on the First Floor or Lower Level when an alarm sounds, you may either go to the stairwell or you may exit the building. Attached to this week’s Roadrunner is a copy of our Fire Evacuation procedures. Please keep a copy handy in your apartments. (A lot of residents post them on the inside of their pantry door or a kitchen cabinet.)Monday, May 30 – Memorial Day is a Federal and Employee Holiday. As such there will not be any mail delivery. Broadway Bank will be closed. There will be minimal staffing and all Blue Skies transportation is suspended for that day.

Housekeeping Spotlight Item – These weekly items give housekeepers an area of special interest. Housekeepers will still adhere to their checklists, but will pay special attention to the Spotlight Items of the week.

Week of May 16 – Walls/Switches/Door PlatesWeek of May 23 – Door Frames/TracksWeek of May 30 – Vanity Lights

Monday Shopping – We depart the West Campus at 1pm. Return pick up is 3:30pm.

Monday, May 23 – Alamo Ranch Shopping Center (1604 & Culebra)Monday, May 30 – No trip due to Memorial Day

SCAM ALERT By: [email protected], Resident Counselor Current Scams Reported:

The usual scams are still out and about: The IRS scam call reporting that you owe money to the IRS and need to respond immediately, and the scam where a friend/grandchild/family

4 Deadline: Friday, May 27 @ Noon - [email protected]

member calls asking you to wire money to a loved one in desperate need, usually out of the country.

Scams to watch for: The other day I was bothered by a pop-up on my home computer that read my

computer was infected by a virus, and I needed to contact a specific number to clean out the computer virus. I turned the computer off and did not call the number. The main reason I did this was due to a resident telling me of a similar situation, and they did call the number. The pop-up comes from a spyware that has infected your computer, but basically cannot read or gain access to any information. The spyware can only bother you with pop-ups. But, if they can get you to call the number, an offer is usually made by the scammer to clean out the virus for a fee. All of this is done remotely too. The scammer never enters your home. They then ask you further questions to gain access to the computer, and once access is gained, other personal information can be obtained. This resident also mentioned the scammers continue to ask for more and more money to keep the computer clean and free from viruses. If you get a pop-up like this on your computer, do what I did. Shut the computer down and call a legitimate computer repair person or company. Sometimes just performing a complete computer scan with a good computer virus program can eliminate the pop-up. Either way, do not call the number on the pop-up. It’s a scam!

23VIDEO PRODUCTION & PHOTO SHOOT SET TO BEGIN MAY 19By: Ilene Kitchens, Director of Sales and MarketingThe best of what makes our Blue Skies campuses so unique - the people, the activities, the environment and the excellence will soon be captured on video and film for the entire world to see. In collaboration with a regional full-service production company, the Marketing Department has meticulously planned out a five-day production schedule which will capture our residents engaged in social, cultural, athletic, spiritual and artistic

activities. Scenic shots, showcasing the architectural and natural beauty of our communities will also be documented by a videographer and still photographer.Lots of thought, time and effort has gone into making sure both Blue Skies East and West are well represented. The production team will begin gathering video and still images on Thursday, May 19. Filming will continue through Wednesday, May 25 (not including Saturday and Sunday). We apologize for any inconvenience which might be caused by our production activity, as we will need to have full control over each location, which may require we temporarily close off certain areas while we are recording video and capturing photos. Once we have gathered all the raw footage and images from the pre-production phase of our project, we will commence crafting new videos and messaging for our ongoing rebranding efforts which will be delivered via social media, traditional media, in newly created collateral materials and at marketing events for prospective residents.

EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION FUND By: BST West Resident CouncilIt has been a long-standing tradition for Blue Skies residents to express an additional “Thank You” through the Employee Appreciation Fund. This fund is administered for us by our Finance Department, and you can participate by placing a check (please use checks instead of cash) into the slot marked “Employee Appreciation Fund” at the Front Desk or by making arrangements with Finance for a specific amount to be added to your Monthly Service Statement. These funds are gifted on our behalf twice a year (June and December) to all hourly paid employees (with the exception of the Beauty Salon employees – the only employees allowed to receive tips). Your check must be received at the Front Desk no later than Friday, Jun 10, by 5pm to be included in the upcoming distribution.  Checks should be made payable to Blue Skies of Texas and marked for Employees’ Appreciation Fund.  Thank you.SPECIAL NOTE: In addition to those individuals you see every day such as the wait staff, housekeepers and custodians, and Front Desk and Maintenance teams, we’ve been asked who are some of the behind-the-scenes folks our Appreciation Fund reaches. Here is a sampling (not all inclusive): Dishwashers, finance clerks, overnight Front Desk and Courtesy Officer teams, Human Resource Specialists, overnight shift nursing and assisted living teams, cooks, etc.

We would appreciate whole systems, but can use any parts such as RAM modules, etc. If you have any computer or spare parts, please contact John Gréaud or Keith Shumaker.THE HIGH FLIGHT CENTER – AN UPDATE! By: Gary AlkireI have been associated with the Villages for over 20 years. A consistent need expressed by residents during that period was the goal of replacing the temporary chapel, in use since 1989, with a real chapel. Along the way residents started the concert series – so very popular to many of us. So we are planning a space that can be used for worship, concerts, guest speakers and etc. Residents backed up their dream with contributions. By the time we started the fund drive over $750,000 had been donated through the years without any idea of when a serious effort would begin. So the good news, pledges and donations have reached over 46% of the $4,450,000 requirement. We thank all who have donated and look forward to your continuing support. If you have questions do not hesitate to send me an email at [email protected] & A COCKTAIL PARTY HOSTS INFORMATION By: Ellen ParkhillDue to the transitional nature of our community there are frequent changes in the composition of each group. At present I am asking for volunteers for June, July, August and October. In addition, it is my intention to be replaced as coordinator no later than the end of this year. After six or seven years I have a terminal case of OTC - old, tired & cranky! Please call me.COMPUTER INSTRUCTIONS By: Wayne ErwinThe Residents’ Council has been asked to see if we can find someone (or several people) to teach/coach residents on computers, tablets and phones. At this point we are not sure how many are in need of training/refresher training but would appreciate volunteers willing to help make us as smart as our kids. If this is a success we’ll see if we can set up one to help us catch up to our grandkids too. If you would like to help out with this project, please let me, Al Wesson or Kathy Bader know. PLEASE, LET’S WEAR OUR NAME TAGS By: Charlotte ReynoldsIf you have misplaced your name tag, put it through too many washes or just need a new one, please contact me. Blue Skies West Purple Martin Update By: Tom Carter

We’ve enjoyed Purple Martins at BST West since their first sighting on February 21. The nesting season for Martins that come to the San Antonio area is in full swing. As of May 13, weekly nest checks reveal we have 105 eggs and 8 young in The Oaks lake site, and 54 eggs and 13 young in the Liberty House fishing lake site. During one nest check, an adult (after second year) female stayed in her compartment after lowering, and we were able to get a close-up photo of her. We also

took a photo of eggs and nestlings. Purple Martins are almost totally dependent on humans for housing since their historical nesting locations in trees are almost non-existent due to the mass cutting of U.S. old-growth forests.GREAT BOOKS By: Gus VanderneckThe next Great Books meeting will be today, Thursday, May 19 in CC2 at 7pm. We will be reading Galileo: “Falling Bodies and Projectiles.” We have chosen the next series of readings, “What’s the Matter? Readings in Physics.” It includes writings by Feynman, Aristotle, Newton, Maxwell, Einstein and others. These are writings chosen for the general public and do not require an in- depth knowledge of science. This is a good chance to expand your understanding of the world as we are experiencing it. The book can be ordered from great books.org or (800) 222-5870. Great Books is a group of people who like to read and talk about what they read and their understanding of the reading. There is no agenda and there are no correct answers. All are welcome to join us or to come in and observe what we do. If you have any questions, call Gus Vanderneck or e-mail at [email protected] BAND NEWS By: Bill OverackerThe next BST West Amateur Radio Club meeting is on Thursday, May 19, at 11:30am in the Roadrunner Lounge.
