PROGRAM. Thursday, Feb 1 – Ronald McDonald House Charity night 

February’s general meeting time is set aside for Block Party Quilters to devote to 

our charities.  Come prepared to join other BPQ members to make quilt and 

pillowcase kits.  Stations are set up and the fun begins as we cut binding, measure 

and cut batting, and sort and cut fabrics.  Plans are in the making and more 

information will be announced at the January meeting and in the January 

newsletter. 

For many years our mission has been and will 

continue to be to fill the cupboards with quilts and 

pillowcases for the children and young adults who 

are staying at the Ronald McDonald House while 

receiving medical care.  In the last couple of years, 

we have been able to add Eastside Baby Corner plus 

other local charities.  In 2018 we will be adding the 

Issaquah YWCA to our charity efforts.  BPQ will be 

building a relationship with the Issaquah YWCA using 

some classroom space for future classes when 

needed.  We in turn will be supplying the Issaquah 

YWCA with pillowcases. 

 

 

 

PROGRAM. Thursday, March 1 – Cathy Erickson, “Quilt Series:  Japanese Internment Camps” 

What Remains:  Quilts and Poetry Inspired by 

the Stories of Japanese Americans in 

Internment Camps during World War II 

In 2002 I started working with Margaret Chula 

on a series called “ What Remains”.  We 

wanted to capture the remembrances of 

Japanese Americans who lived in the US during 

World War II. In the 1940’s over 120,000 

Japanese Americans were imprisoned in 

internment camps.  From the newborn baby to 

the aging grandfather, all their lives were 

changed dramatically.  Now only photos, 

stories, and rock rubble remain of that 

time.  The art quilts and poetry in this series try 

to capture the spirit of what remains over 70 

years later. Over the span of nine years 

together, Margaret and I created 10 new quilts 

and poems. I have continued to create quilts in 

this series which now numbers well over 20 

quilts.   My goal in the series was and still is to 

capture stories and emotion in a two 

dimensional medium 

My power point presentation will focus on the stories behind 

the quilts I have created as well as techniques and 

approaches to designing and making them. This will be a 

photo‐rich presentation and will also include a trunk show of 

many of the quilts I have made for this series.

PROGRAM. Thursday, May 3 – Laura Wasilowski, “Where Did I Go Wrong:  Confessions of a Serial Quilter” 

 

Explore the artist’s quirky mind with this lecture about quilt 

making in a series. Enjoy the revelation that one chicken quilt will 

surely lead to a second, third or fortieth. And discover what 

drives a person to create multiple quilts about a blue chair, 

garden implements, or unsung kitchen appliances. All is revealed 

in this exposé, the Confessions of a Serial Quilter. After the 

lecture, which includes dramatic renditions from Songs of the 

Fuser, Laura will display her small quilts (“mini‐series quilts”) and 

offer a trunk show of hand‐dyed fabric and threads from Artfabrik

Adapt the graphic impact of woodcuts to quilt making. Your design 

begins with an original sketch done in class, which is used for pattern 

transfer to fused fabrics. Black fabric acts as a base for your design and 

the fused fabric shapes are arranged to make a bold, graphic image. 

Learn about free cutting, pattern transfer, and the design secrets of the 

woodcut quilt.

When you design quilts as you go, you embrace serendipity and become an 

“accidental artist”. Learn several methods of creating fused quilt designs in 

an improvisational manner. Begin with a heap of pre‐fused fabric scraps 

from Laura’s stash to trigger your design ideas. Learn various systems for 

constructing your artwork and put your colorful fabric kit to good use. 

You’ll create and learn as you go. It’s fun to design on the fly!

PROGRAM. Thursday, June 7 – Christine Barnes, “Magic Fabrics/Special Effects: 

Put simply, magic fabrics give a quilt light and life. Some suggest 

light coming from below the surface (luminosity) or bouncing 

across the surface (luster). Others imply that see‐through colors 

overlap to create new color mixtures (transparency). What 

constitutes a magic fabric? I describe many as “shot with light.” 

They usually display variations in value—light areas among 

darker areas, or light‐to‐dark gradations—and they typically 

contain warm colors. Batiks, hand‐dyes, and hand‐painted 

fabrics have a dappled quality; some commercial fabrics appear 

to “smolder,” an illusion that lends depth and warmth to even 

the simplest quilts. Christine’s presentation will include digital 

images and display of numerous blocks, quilts, garments, and

 Do you stress when it’s time to choose colors and fabrics for a new quilt? 

Do you wish you had a better “color sense”? You need to go on retreat to 

gain a new perspective. You need to come to Color Camp! 

This no‐sew workshop based on Christine's book, The Quilter's Color Club, 

consists of cut‐and‐paste color studies, with lots of help from the teacher 

and group critique of every block. 

The first three mock‐block 

exercises focus on value (light and 

dark), temperature (warm and 

cool), and intensity (bright and dull). These characteristics, 

more than color itself, determine the impact of a quilt. An 

overview of the color wheel and a final exercise expose 

students to this invaluable (and amazing) tool for quilters. Its 

lots of creative fun, and you’ll leave “Color Camp” with fresh 

ideas for working with color. This is not a project class; this 

workshop includes mini lecture, exercises, and critique along 

with viewing sample blocks, quilts, and garments as examples.

Amaze your family! Fool your 

friends! They will be very 

impressed when you show 

them a block or quilt that 

incorporates the illusion of 

transparent color. In this special effect, one color appears to lie 

over another, and where the two colors overlap, a third color is 

formed. It takes "just‐right" fabrics for successful 

transparencies, but when it works, wow! We start with a crash 

course in color, then make three simple mock‐blocks, followed 

by two more challenging ones. This is not a project class, this workshop includes a mini‐lecture, 

exercises, critique, sample blocks 

 

PROGRAM. Thursday, July 5 – Judi Madsen, “Secondary Designs” 

 Judi is an award‐winning quilter, author, and instructor. She has travelled throughout the USA, Canada, Australia and Norway bringing the joy of quilting to others.  She started her own pattern line when she was 25 and has self‐published over 50 different designs for her company Green Fairy Quilts.  Her first book, Quilting Wide Open Spaces, was published by AQS in 2013. Her second book, Secondary Designs with Judi Madsen, was published December 2016.   Judi will be doing a trunk show with a power point presentation.  It will cover her quilts from her books as well as some of the quilting she has done on customer quilts.  The quilts in the trunk show will be all of her original designs.  

 

 

 

 

WORKSHOP.  Friday July 6– Judi Madsen, “Quilting with Shapes” & “Ruler Work”

Two topics will be covered, roughly 3 hours per topic.  Registration for the class includes both; sorry but

 Quilting with Shapes   In this class you will learn how Judi uses simple shapes like the square and 

triangle to create awe inspiring modern and traditional quilting 

motifs. We will learn when it is appropriate to use shapes in your 

quilting and what details will work within the designs. You will gain 

confidence as you learn to quilt by marking out your designs first then 

quilting with your straight ruler to make these designs perfect! Judi 

will also share with you her project “Just Call Me Modern”, her 

recently published design that 

showcases the concepts promoted 

in her book “Quilting with Shapes.” 

You will come out of this class 

ready to tackle straight ruler quilting, and quilting with shapes to give 

your quilts a brand new look! 

Ruler Work   Come and learn how Judi Madsen creates designs using 

straight lines, her ruler and a little bit of free motion quilting. She will 

share with you the importance of marking your quilt and making your 

quilts stand out with incredible, almost perfect quilting! This will be a 

fun class filled with lots of ideas on how to quilt up blocks and sashings that have you stumped. 

PROGRAM. Thursday, Aug 2 – Karla Alexander, “Lift the Quilts out of your Stash” 

An informative discussion for quilt makers of all skill levels and 

experience.  You will be looking at your stash in a whole new way and 

actually start using your fabric rather than just admiring it!  Enjoy the 

confidence you'll gain exploring traditional and nontraditional quilt 

methods by adding your own twist!   

Tips will inspire excitement and create unexpected surprises ready to be 

quilted into your next project!  Challenge yourself to take small or bold 

steps as you learn to work with your fabric and create your own 

methods and styles.  A large trunk show will illustrate many different 

styles of quilts as well as subjects discussed.

prefer straight seams!  You will leave this workshop a master of curves!

 

Come ready to experiment and learn new exciting techniques to create waves, perfect circles, free‐form 

and/or ruler cut ovals, arcs and gentle curves.  Nothing is set in stone, changes are welcome and you will 

be encouraged to follow your instincts while exploring additional options.   

For the workshop, you may choose to do either of the following: 

1.       Work with any of Karla’s circle, wave or oval patterns found in her books or standalone patterns, 

and focus on a specific method. (purchase her books and/or patterns separately, in advance from her

bring plenty of options!).  Please follow the supply list in your chosen pattern.   OR

Freddy was educated as an artist but didn’t find quilting until 

age 60.   She was looking for something totally absorbing and 

exciting that would satisfy that artistic place in her soul that 

needed nourishment.  And, that's how she started quilting. 

She started as a traditional quilter and progressed along the 

way to being a fiber artist. Freddy will amuse us with stories 

and adventures along with a bountiful trunk show.

 In this two‐day class, Freddy will help to unlock your creativity to achieve by collage the image(s) you want to portray. Freddy will bring in many examples to provide inspiration to guide you in creating your desired image.  Class emphasis is on design, color, and being able to create whatever the student wants to create. Her response to “I can never make a quilt that looks like that” is to say “you’re right, but you can collage it! ”This is not a fusing class.  Freddy uses fabric and a glue stick!  Most students should 

be able to create 1‐2 pieces during class.
