This would leave the Bandon Quilters out in the cold, with no other viable options. Meeting the challenge, and not about to dissolve the Bandon Quilters, with heads together and problem-solving skills sharpened, they did their version of “If you can’t beat them, join them!” And join them, they did; joined the OddFellows Chapter, that is! Over half of the quilters and their husbands became IOOF, Bandon Chapter, members, thus saving the IOOF Charter and retaining the meeting hall. This took place several years ago, and the quilters and the IOOF chapter are going strong. The quilters still attend twice monthly quilt meetings as well as Oddfellows meetings and keep up with volunteer duties of both. The little IOOF Cemetery near the Hall is receiving a lot more TLC these days! I had the pleasure of being a visitor at their latest quilt meeting as they planned their schedules for Bandon’s annual Cranberry Festival events; their annual quilt show and participation as riders on the Oddfellows float during the parade. I hope you are going strong these days, as well, with your quilting and all your other endeavors! Pat

Thoughts from the President…

You know by now how I love a good quilter’s story! This month I’d like to share a quilt group’s story of how they managed to stay together, and save their meeting space. It’s definitely another story of quilters’ determination, resilience, creativity, and dedication. The quilters are the Bandon Quilt Club in beautiful Bandon, Oregon. A longtime friend of mine is one of the quilters and she’s kept me in the loop as the group’s story unfolded.

The Bandon Quilters meet twice monthly in the IOOF Hall, (International Order of OddFellows), an older building, but with a kitchen and good space for the quilters and all their activities at an affordable rate. The Hall is also often the space for other community activities.

As it happens to so many fraternal organizations these days, membership in the OddFellows was dwindling and their charter was in danger of being revoked as their numbers were falling below those required to continue. This meant, of course, that the Chapter would be dissolved and the Hall would have to be closed and put up for sale.

PROGRAM MEETING

October 14 The program for October is Sandra Bruce, a art

quilter, long-arm quilter, illustrator, letterer, polymer

"Material Matrix and the Paths Taken". It is a

presentation using images and quilts to show her

background, her work, an overview of her process

called "Material Matrix", and how it all comes

together using color, design, composition and

serendipity on October 14, at the SHARC.

MATERIAL MATRIX

Wednesday, October 15

The workshop, Material Matrix: Sew Ready will be

held on Wednesday, October 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

at the Sunriver Area Library community room. The

cost is $35. This is a class where students use a

provided photo to experience and learn her process

called "material matrix". Some of the points covered

are: what makes a good photo to turn into a quilt, how

to interpret a photo using a grid, value and color,

curved piecing, using a mix of prints and solids, and

ideas about quilting. There are 8 openings left, so

sign up ASAP with Betty Vincent, Program Director.

INTERESTING ITEMS

FROM BETTY VINCENT

The Artists of 97707 exhibit at the Sunriver library

includes quilts from Dolores Petty, Linda Saukkonen,

Karen Padrick and Betty Vincent. They are located in

the west end of the library.

Twenty-two appliqué students attended Nancy Lee

Chong appliqué class held at the Bend Park community

room. It was an excellent class.

QUIET THOSE CELL PHONES!

As a courtesy to our speakers, guests, guild members,

show and tell presenters and anyone attending our meet-

ings, please quiet your cell phone before the start of the

meeting.

Before the start of the meeting, switch the sound off. If

you are expecting an important call, switch it to vibrate

and exit the meeting room to take your call. Your atten-

tion to this is appreciated.

NEW MEMBERS TEA

SEPTEMBER 30TH AT 1:00 PM.

SUNRIVER LIBRARY

The members of the MMQ Guild will be hosting a

tea, for all new members who have joined the

guild in the last two years.

All members are welcome and encouraged to

come enjoy getting acquainted with our new

fellow quilters.

Teas, coffee, scones, cookies and tea breads will

be served.

39 & HOLDING CLASS BY BARB LOWERY On Aug. 26th, 19 of our members gathered to exchange our black and white strips for our class.

After a little chaos, everyone got the idea. We had a lot of fun and there were not many duplicates

in the strips we exchanged. Some

of the members stayed to sew at

SHARC. Several came the next

day to work in the classroom at

BJ's. We had a great time

sewing and shopping.

Thank you to Vicki and the staff

at BJ's Quilt Basket. Bill from

Cynthia's came into the class

room to make adjustments to

some machines.

We will look forward to seeing

the completed quilts at our MMQ

meetings. I hope we can have

them at a special exhibit next

year at the Sunriver Quilt Show.

TIP FROM FONS AND PORTER When using plastic zip-top storage bags to store

fabrics or projects, cut a very small corner off

the bag to allow air to flow out of the bag. The

bag will store flatter, and you have less chance

of trapped moisture.

Master Quilter Nomination for Barbara Lowery

In looking for a master quilter who has made extraordinary contributions in support of the guild’s mission of providing fellowship, education,

and involvement in charitable endeavors, Barbara Lowery stands alone as the best candidate. When asked to do something for the guild, she always responds with a “yes.” As an MMQ member for 15 years, she has exceeded the criteria required of a master quilter. Fellowship: Through the years Barb has acted as a guild “ambassador”. Her enthusiasm is contagious as she encourages members to be involved. She is always welcoming as she greets visitors and new members. Barb initiates sewing days for the guild just so new members have an opportunity to meet others. Part of her contribution to the guild is her willingness to accept leadership roles. Frequently these are the “tough” jobs. She was the editor of the newsletter for two years, is currently the treasurer, and has volunteered to chair the 2015 MMQ quilt show. All of these take an extra commitment of time. While traveling in her RV, Barb was a guest writer for our newsletter and sent information about shops to visit and things she saw along the route. Education: As a teacher, she is always well prepared and generous with materials and time. Not only do participants enjoy the fellowship of her classes, they learn new skills. This was evident with the last class she taught. She prepared a special “tips” handout to help people as they made the quilt blocks. She also went beyond the expected by organizing a day two of the class to be held at BJ’s. In addition to organizing the class she covered the cost of the rental of the room and had treats. Charitable endeavors: Barb’s generosity affects others’ lives. She consistently donates quilts for guild charity projects. For years Barb has been making quilts for the recipients of Newberry Habitat homes. Although the request for a Habitat home is a family quilt, Barb makes a quilt for every member of the household. These quilts are presented at a ceremony when the family receives the keys to their new home. She has donated quilts for fundraising for women’s scholarships and the local Anglers’ Club auction. Even while traveling, Barb’s generosity was evident when she donated a quilt to raise funds for a raffle for a young child with a serious illness and a need for help with medical costs. The request for help with a raffle quilt was made at an MMQ meeting. After the meeting a call was made to Barb, who was traveling out of town. She told the callers where to find a new quilt to be donated. Sometimes her charity includes education. She accepted the challenge to teach two Boy Scouts to quilt. She provided the fabric and machines for their projects. The boys submitted their completed quilts to The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Challenge and both boys won a sewing machine. As a bonus, the quilt projects helped the boys earn the Eagle Scout rank. Barb shows up with her amazing “meals on wheels” when anyone needs help. She is one of the first to sign up for bringing treats and often brings food to guild events, such as bazaar classes. Barb makes quilts for everyone — weddings, births, and friends’ grandkids. Quilting Skills: While Barb may seem to be a traditional quilter she is eager to learn new techniques. Recently, Barb embraced modern quilting designs. She takes and teaches many classes every year. Perhaps Barb’s middle name should be “prolific” since she completes dozens of quilts in a year. Her skills are so prized that two women attending the MMQ Quilt Show asked where to find quilts by Barb Lowery. One woman had purchased one of Barb’s quilts the year before and both were looking to add to their “Barb Lowery” collection. Barb is a highly respected quilter who makes store samples for Quiltworks and Sew Many Quilts. Barb’s skill as a quilter was evident when she participated in Shaker Challenges and a quilt show in Arizona. At the Arizona show one of her quilts was awarded the “most artistic” by a vote of the public and first place for the “all around” quilt” as determined by a vote of the 150 member quilt guild. A picture of one of her quilted church banners was published in The Bulletin newspaper. Her cutting skills are legendary. Her demonstrations of precision cutting skills at the Sisters Quilt Show and the MMQ Quilt Show were well received by people attending the shows. She has impressed the employees of Sew Many Quilts with her speed and accuracy when making kits for the shop. When the guild decided to honor Judy Hopkins, a nationally known quilter and author who passed away, Barb took one of Judy Hopkins’ UFOs, added to the fabric collection and created a beautiful quilt. It was one of the quilts featured at the Sunriver Lodge art gallery and at a special event at the MMQ Quilt Show. While Barb donated the time and fabric to complete the UFO, the funds resulting from the sale of the finished quilt went to the guild. These funds will provide for a special speaker for the guild. Guild Service: Barb’s generosity knows no bounds. Through the years she has donated to fund raising activities. One year she gathered photos of MMQ members’ quilts, made them into note cards, and then sold them to raise money for the guild. Another time she earned the guild more then $500 when she created notecards and then spent the entire day at the MMQ bazaar personalizing the cards with people’s initials. For years, Barb has represented the guild when she worked at the Sisters Quilt Show intake and at the MMQ booth. In addition, she has regularly volunteered at the MMQ quilt show. Barb comes to the guild with unique ideas for bazaar projects, teaches the classes, and provides the materials for projects. Organizing kits for bazaar projects, such as making fabric grocery bags, is also part of Barb’s commitment to helping the guild. In every organization, there are a few people who work quietly behind the scenes. They work for the good of the group and not for personal reward or glory. Since they are not often recognized, not even given credit for what they do, it seems vital to honor these people. Barb is one of these people. Her dedication to teaching quilting classes, generous offering of self, time and materials to our club, her own fine skills as a quilter, her leadership and her contribution to the guild as well as the greater community gives our guild the opportunity to formally honor Barbara Lowery for what she really is, A Master Quilter.

Thread Dancing by Julia Jeans:

Long Arm Quilting Services AND Long Arm Machine Rentals…

I am a free-motion long arm quilter that quilts all styles of quilts (all over, custom, appliqué and art). I’ve been long arm quilting for 3 years and have successfully quilted hundreds of quilts for customers and myself. In addi-tion, this fall I started teaching long arm quilting.

Have you ever wanted to quilt your quilt top and wished you had a long arm to use? Or have you ever wondered if you should buy a long arm sewing machine but wished you could use one for a while to see if it’s something you’ll stick with? Well here is your chance.

The first step is to take the ‘Introduction to Long Arm Quilting Class’ held at Thread Dancing in Bend. After you have completed the introductory class, you may rent the Gammill machine at $18 an hour. There are only two students per class so sign up with a friend today.

For more information on quilting services, class sign ups and machine rentals call or email Julia Jeans @ (541) 728 -1286 / [email protected].
