Welcome to the Blessed Trinity Catholic Parishes 2 New website at: www.blesstrinity.org

A Good Samaritan Fund has been established at St. Joseph Church to help those people in our par-ish who suddenly find themselves in need of a help-ing hand so they can get their lives back on track. At the 5:00 p.m. Mass on April 21, we will take up a Second Collection to help our neighbors through

periods of crisis such as unpaid bills, illness and other times of need. We may not always see it or hear about it, but there have been people in our community who have needed our assistance. Over the past five months, we have been able to help families with housing expense, food and medicine. While local agencies were able to assist, their resources were limited. When bad things hap-pen to good people, it takes other good people to help them back on their feet. Presbyterate Day for all Priests of the Diocese of Sioux City in Active Ministry will be held on Thursday, April 19 at St. Mary Parish in Storm Lake. There will be no Mass celebrated in the parish that morning. Topics for the day include: Physician Assist-ed Suicide Developments in Iowa, the Latest in Hospice Care and an afternoon session on Active Shooter Scenario Training and how to prepare for emergency situations that could develop on our Catholic properties. St. Benedict CDA will meet Wednesday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Windsor Manor, Algona. Hostesses: Dale Arndorfer/Lynn Miller.

A Parishioner Asked: At one of the last funerals we noticed that you began in back of church. Why is that? Answer: The funeral liturgy is one of the most important events a Catholic community celebrates in a person’s life, but one so often misunderstood. The funeral Mass is a final opportunity to commend the deceased to God’s mercy and that’s why it must be done with reverence. It is a time when we commend the deceased to God’s mercy and reflect on how the person’s life mirrored the love and teachings of Jesus. Because our Baptism unites us to the death and resurrection of Jesus, the signs and symbols of a Catholic funeral are the same as those at Baptism. At the beginning of the Funeral Mass, the

priest meets the casket and family at the ‘doors of the church’ as a sign that the baptism of the deceased was their entryway into the Church. The priest continues in prayer with sprinkling the casket with holy water recalling the water of Baptism; then the family co-vers the casket with a pall (if the body is present) which is an-other reminder of our baptism. After this ritual, the funeral procession walks down the aisle led by the Celebrant and other ministers and the Gathering hymn begins. The casket is brought to the front of the sanctuary dur-ing the singing of the hymn which correspond to consolation and the liturgy’s focus on the Eucharist, and it is positioned in front of the paschal candle as a reminder of the light of Christ and how it dispels the darkness of death and promises life eter-nal. The Mass continues as usual. +Blessings in Christ,
