Forming the Flock Reflection by Fr. Bryan
My first real job after graduating from university was working for a bank (actually a savings and loan – remember those?) and within nine months was promoted to the training and development department which I so enjoyed. After a year of developing and conducting skills development workshops for the employees, I was again promoted to train new branch managers. This created some interesting situations because, at the age of 24, some of the people I was training were all "senior" in age to me – and some of them let me know it.
On occasion, I would send my “fledglings” of management trainees (most of whom had no previous banking experience, but did have good management experience) out on their own for a week into the branch offices to be without me hovering over them. It was good strategy as they would have to use their training to function with the branch employees and customers in various environments from the super busy branches in Smitty’s (see, I’m dating myself!) to the quiet branches in Sun City with a wealthy and demanding clientele.
One day I went to visit a branch in which two of the trainees (one of which let me know that I was too young for the job I was doing…) were stationed and as it so happened, it was closing time and they were “out of balance” in their cash drawer. And not just a little: they were short $18,000! They were having significant difficulty in finding the error or errors and the company policy was that you didn’t “close out” until the error was located. They were in a panic because they didn’t want to tell the branch manager for fear of “looking dumb” or perhaps receive a reprimand, nor did they want the other tellers know that they had “messed up” – which they had done in grand style. When I walked in they said, “Oh, thank God, you’re here. Now we know everything is going to be alright.”
When Jesus appeared to his disciples after His Resurrection, His first words to them were a greeting of peace. This was certainly welcome news to the disciples as they were huddled together in a room and were in fear of what might happen to them because they were His disciples and might also be put to death. They may have had a similar reaction as did my trainees: “Oh, thank God you’re here.”
The Feast of Pentecost celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Jesus’ first disciples, and that same Spirit is with us today. Significantly, after breathing upon them and giving them the gift of the Holy Spirit, Jesus gives them something very important to do: forgive sins. Just as Jesus sent his disciples to forgive the sins of others, so too are we sent to bring peace to the world and also to forgive the sins of those who have sinned against us. All of us have been on both sides of that equation: others have hurt us, but we also have hurt others. We know that forgiving takes work, a lot of hard work sometimes. But we have been given the Holy Spirit to help us with that task, just as did the disciples. It is in the forgiveness of sins that we can bring peace to the world – even if it just our small part of the world.
So, what happened to the $18,000 error? It was a series of computer entry errors on their part. But this young trainer made it a point to his trainees about being careful to not be afraid to ask for help, to reiterate that their training on how to read the “journal tape” (that shows each transaction and how to decode it was an important part of their training – and was not just for “young people” to know, and that age doesn’t reflect ability or for that matter, inability. Both of these two trainees went on to be very good managers for the company. I accepted their “apology” in my heart, even if it wasn’t spoken publically.
Let us thank God for the many gifts He has given us, especially for the gift of the Holy Spirit – and for the people who have listened to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and have come into the Church on its “birthday.”

The Feast of Pentecost, fifty days after Easter, is the birthday of the Church. The descent of the Holy Spirit who stirs, inflames, and animates the human heart to the mission of Jesus Christ is what this day is all about. Donald Jackson’s modern portrayal of Pentecost in the Saint John’s Bible offers a vision of power of the Holy Spirit moving upon the Church as it stirs, inflames, and animates.
The top of the page is highlighted by brilliant gold-leafing amid ominous colors as a v-shape, representing the descending Spirit, penetrates the rectangular frame just above the windowed cross, a reminder that the Spirit’s descent happens through the Paschal Mystery of Christ, His death and resurrection. The gold-leafing continues to stir downward amid the stirring of the darkness and chaos in the world reminding us that it is God who provides order and that we come to know that order through the work and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The gold-leafing continues to spiral down to an image of Jerusalem in the foreground and Saint John’s Abbey Church in Minnesota, the patron of the artwork, in the background. This image reminds the viewer that the Church understands itself in a lineage with Judaism and is called to be the People of God for the world. To the right of the image of Jerusalem are the traditional keys that represent the papacy, reminding that the people of God are structured within a hierarchy. As the red streaks reminiscent of the tongues of fire descend lower we see a series of celebratory flags and figures animated in postures of celebration. Interestingly, these flags are portrayals of those flown at the abbey and university on feast days. The images of the people celebrating are adaptations of a crowd celebrating at a Saint John’s University football game.
The image invites our reflection. Life in the world today is cautious about religion. People who are passionate about faith are often branded as zealots or extremists. Yet, this passion is exactly the call of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit stirs us up. Perhaps we look at the world today and see the chaos of darkness surrounding. The Spirit stirs us to seek order. The Holy Spirit inflames our hearts. One cannot speak to even a lukewarm Arizona sports fan without receiving passionate and inflamed responses about the memorable events in teams’ history. Faith is not about stoic observance. The Holy Spirit inflames the heart and brings forth engaged and passionate responses. In this manner Pentecost and the reception of the Holy Spirit animates the Christian life.
The Jewish feast of Pentecost celebrates the reception of the Torah on Mt. Sinai, 50 days after Passover. The Torah is the animating gift of God, for Jewish life. The Christian feast of Pentecost celebrates the reception of the Holy Spirit and the animation of the Apostles as they moved to preach and share the wondrous acts of God with the world. They were animated by the Holy Spirit to the mission of the Church: evangelization – sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ.
We, like the Apostles on this day, are called to receive the Holy Spirit anew and allow Him to stir us, inflame our hearts, and animate our faith to share the Good News of Jesus Christ in our world!

We Are Never Alone
My children want my help sometimes, and other times, not so much. I remember being a teenager and young adult myself. At times, I thought I knew everything. I didn’t need help because I was just so darn smart. Truth is, I needed to find my own way. I needed to stretch my wings and prove to myself and my family I could fly. I assume that is what is happening with my own children as well. It just seems so different now that I’m the parent.
Human beings need help. We need community, and we need to rely on one another. At Pentecost, we reflect on Jesus sending to the Church a helper, the Holy Spirit. God interacting with us in this manner means we are never truly alone. We focus most of the time on the Spirit of God as the assistance we need, and we do need Him for sure. However, since it is that very same Spirit that turned us into “Church” from a band of people looking to carry on after Jesus’ ascension, at Pentecost we gained more than divine help: we gained each other.
Today, the Church needs help in a profound way. We need to lean on the Holy Spirit to blow through the Church with a profound renewal. But we cannot forget that we have been given each other to lean on as well. We are a gift to each other, and together with the Spirit’s help, we are the Body of Christ here on earth. We must be strong and stand for one another. If we do that, this Pentecost will bear fruit that will be with us for many Pentecosts to come.
