Muting Participants in Blackboard Collaborate Ultra

In Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, you have the ability to mute the microphones of individual participants or all participants. This can be especially useful if you have a participant who has forgotten to mute their microphone after speaking or if you have multiple participants trying to speak over each other.

To mute an individual participant, you must be in the Participants panel. If you are not in the Participants panel, open it by opening the Collaborate panel and choosing the Participants panel from the tools.

Find the participant’s name in the Participants window. You will be able to see that their microphone is active by the microphone icon to the left of their name. When you find their name, go the far right and click on the circle with the three dots in it. If you mouse over that circle, a popup that says, “Moderator controls” will appear.

After you click on the circle with the three dots in it, a menu of choices will open. Click on the choice that says Mute and that participant’s microphone will be muted. The participant will get a popup message that their microphone has been muted. They do have the ability to open their microphone again after they have been muted.

If you would like to mute all participants at once, go to the top of the Participants panel and click on the circle with the three dots in it. If you mouse over that circle, a popup that says “More options” will appear.

After you click on the circle, a menu will open. Click on “Mute All” and all participant microphones will be muted.

To prevent participants from using their microphones, you can disable them in the Session Settings panel. To open the Session Settings panel, open the Collaborate Panel and choose My Settings.

Once you have the My Settings panel open, click on the Session Settings tab. After the window opens, uncheck the “Share their audio” box. This will prevent participants from opening their microphones, but will not affect the ability of the Moderators or Presenters to use their microphones.
