Ahmedabad: When a boycalled Narendra Panchal onSaturday to tell him that it washis missing son, Ronak — whohad been untraceable sinceFebruary 2012 — Panchal wasstunned with disbelief. Theskepticism was natural: the boywas speaking with a thick Hin-di accent.

However, when Panchal re-ached the designated spot nearthe CTM Bridge, the boy couldnot control himself and ran to-wards Panchal and hugged himtightly with teary eyes. Panchaldid not need further proof. Itwas indeed his lost son.

Ronak, a class VI student ofPooja School in the CTM area, had started off from home atnoon on February 22, 2012.That was the last time hisfam-ilysawhim,be-foreSaturday. After Vishwa Patel,11, was reported missing on Ja-nuary 26, 2012, this was the sec-ond major case; a state-widedrive to track down missing

kids began soon thereafter. An emotional Panchal told

TOI that he had not lost hopethrough the days of de-spair. “We did not leave any

stone unturned to learnabout the whereabouts ofRonak,” he said. “Wemight have visited all cor-

ners of the state with thehope that we would seehim again. We could noteven live in the same house

as it reminded us of him.”

THE BOY’S JOURNEY “According to Ronak’s ac-

count, he was going to school

that day when a man offeredhim a chocolate,” said SanjayJoshi, the founder of Search MyChild, an organization formedin 2012 to track down missingchildren. “He does not remem-ber anything after that. Whenhe woke up, he found himself ata roadside dhaba. The menthere forced him to do all sortsof odd jobs. He says that therewere two other boys of his age.”The kids were not allowed touse their real names and werebeckoned with labels such as‘Babu’.

Ramol police said that Ro-nak found a chance to flee re-cently. He kept running till hefound a railway station. “Heboarded a train that was headedfrom Ajmer to Mumbai, a factthat indicates that Rajasthanwas the probable place of con-finement for Ronak,” said a po-lice official. “In the morning hegot down at Kalupur Stationand took a mini-truck to the Ra-bari Colony.”

Ronak could not find his par-ents at his old home. He thenran to his father’s workplace. When he could not find himthere either, he approached anearby fruit vendor to make thecall.
