What is a European Corn Borer?

NameDatePeriodClass

1.Major Corn Insect Pest2. Female lay up to 600 eggs 4x a

year3.Egg, larva, pupa, moth4. Larvae feed on leaf surfaces,

stalks and bore into midribs

Corn Plant Growth 1.Flowering, fruit-bearing

grass plant2. Seed weight = about .28 g3.10 week growth = 7-10 feet

or (2-3 meters)4. Produce 500 to 1000 seeds

stalk

1 ear of corn

leafroot

tassel

What do Plants need to GROW?

What is their function?

1.Macro and Micro nutrients from the soil

2.CO2

3.Oxygen4.Sunlight

1) Carry out biochemical reaction of photosynthesis – water and CO2 converted into Glucose(C6H12O6) and O2

What is Bt corn and why create it?

1.Bacillus thuringiensis or Bt = soil bacterium -produces crystalline proteins (Cry proteins) are poisons for specific insects

2.Inserted the Cry protein gene into corn plants’ DNA

3.Bt corn is protected by the toxin: larvae eat corn plant and die

Why create Bt corn?

What are the problems?

1.Protect Corn Yield2.More corn to feed the

growing population of humans and animals

1)Harmful to non-target insects (honeybees & butterflies)

2)Humans show allergic reaction to corn when eaten

What is Corn Yield?1.Amount of corn produced

in a field2.The # of kernels on an ear

Corn plant normally produces 1 ear of corn per plant.

Independent and Dependent Variables

Scientists use an experiment to search for cause and effect relationships in nature. In other words, they design an experiment so that changes to one item cause something else to change in a predictable way. These changing qualities are called variables. A variable is any factor, trait or condition that can exist in differing amounts or types. An experiment usually has three kinds of variables: independent, dependent and controlled.

The scientist focuses their observations on the dependent variable to see how it responds to the change made to the independent variable. The change of the dependent variable is caused by and depends on the value of the independent variable. Experiments also have controlled variables. Controlled variables are factors that a scientist wants to remain constant (the same), and they must observe them as carefully as the dependent variables. Controlled variables are used to compare the dependent variable’s changes in experiment’s relationship and keep the tests fair.

IDENTIFY INDEPENDENT & DEPENDENT VARIABLES

Pick 2 colored pencils or highlighters

Underline Independent

Circle Dependent

HOMEWORK1)Remind Parents about Back to School Night Tomorrow

2)Complete a minimum of 3 pages in your IR tonight – due Friday at the beginning of class

3)We will be working in class on the Virtual Lab for the rest of the week.
