BioOne Complete Adds ORCID Identifiers, Funder Info, and More New FeaturesThis March, BioOne rolled out a new display template for BioOne Complete that supports the inclusion of new metadata tags, such as ORCID identifiers and funder information. BioOne’s adoption of the NISO Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) standard allows us to tag new information during XML conversion and deposit it to Crossref. The richer, more complete metadata will result in the wider dissemination of our publishers’ content, making it easier to find and use.

New metadata (where provided by the publisher to BioOne) tagged for display

and deposit include information on:

• contributor IDs (including ORCID identifiers);

• contributor roles and affiliations;• funding sources, programmes, and

IDs; • licensing, access, and usage.

BioOne is pleased to be able to display this information and facilitate both discoverability and a richer research experience. ■

Apprised of my interest in anthropology, Radka had arranged a meeting with RNDr. Jana Velemínská, head of the Department of Physical Anthropol-ogy and Human Genetics, and PhDr. Jana Křehlová, Senior Librarian at the Biological Sciences Library. The library is a friendly place to work, complete with its own dog to ensure the safety and happiness of all patrons.

This visit contained a particular surprise, for the building also houses the Museum of Man.

This gem was founded by one of American Anthropology’s early leaders, Czech born Aleš Hrdlička. Director of the Anthropology departments at the American Mu-seum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution, Hrdlička did pioneering research on the Ne-anderthal. Not only did Hrdlička postulate that all humankind has a common origin, he developed the theory that modern humans migrated from Asia to North America via the Bering Strait.

In Brno, the capital of Moravia at the eastern side of the Czech Republic, I visited the stunning Art Nouveau mansion that is now the headquarters of the Institute of Vertebrate Biology. There, the Institute’s head librarian Ing. Hana Slábaková greeted me, along with their journal Folia Zoologica’s Editor-in-Chief prof. RNDr. Jan Zima DrSc., and Managing Editor Lenka Glosová. In conjunc-tion with the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, the Institute conducts basic research on the

genetic, population and species di-versity of vertebrates. This research includes phylogeny, population dynamics, interactions with environment, and association with human and animal microbial pathogens. This meeting has since led to a new publishing partnership that we will announce as part of BioOne’s 2018 collection later this year.

Please join BioOne as we raise our glasses to so many hospitable colleagues in the Czech Republic, na zdraví!

BioOne Complete is widely distributed in the Czech Republic, from Prague in the west to Brno in the east. This is a country that has actively supported higher education for over six centuries. Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia is responsible for investing in the enlightenment of his subjects. In 1348, he established Charles University in Prague, the first Studium Generale or medieval university north of the Alps and east of Paris. It was there that I was recently privileged to pay a visit to the Faculty of Science as the guest of Radka Lukášová, e-Resources Manager in the library’s Research Support Department.

(l-r) Hana Slábaková, Lenka Glosová, Susi Skomal, and Jan Zima are framed by a monumental Art Nouveau bookshelf at the Institute of Vertebrate Biology.

BioOne Rebranding PreviewEarly this year, BioOne launched a new organizational website. The site is responsive, easy to navigate, and makes it easier for BioOne staff to communicate with our community.

As a continuation of this rebranding effort, BioOne is getting a fresh coat of paint for the first time in ten years. BioOne, the organization, will have its own logo. BioOne Complete will retain the current BioOne logo with only slight updates to create consistency between both brands. The BioOne green will remain as well as a secondary color. The two logos will share the same colors and basic components, communicating clearly that the BioOne and BioOne Complete brands are of a family but distinct. The new brand identities will also share the same set of typefaces.

The BioOne design team expects to launch the new identity this summer. We look forward to sharing our fresh look with the community at that time. ■

Said Library Journal: “BioOne Complete presents a cost-effective collection of independently published scholarly content and affords full-text access to materials, providing students and scholars use of current research and, with the assistance of Google Translate, encourages worldwide participation. With a wide range of tools and enhancements, this product is a valuable addition to institutions that support the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences. BioOne has returned over $35 million from sales to its nonprofit publishers, helping them remain financially sustainable and editorially independent.”

Take a look at the complete review in Library Journal’s April 15 print issue.
