BIOGRAPHY
Nooyi was born in Madras (presently Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India. She was
educated at Holy Angels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Madras. She
received a Bachelor's degree in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from Madras
Christian College in 1974 and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (MBA)
from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta in 1976.Beginning her career in
India, Nooyi held product manager positions at Johnson & Johnson and textile
firm MetturBeardsell. She was admitted to Yale School of Management in 1978
and earned a Master's degree in Public and Private Management. While at Yale,
she completed her summer internship with Booz Allen Hamilton.Graduating in
1980, Nooyi joined the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and then held strategy
positions at Motorola and Asea Brown Boveri.
Nooyi was born Indra Krishnamurthy in Madras (now called Chennai), in southern
India, on October 28, 1955. Her family was part of India's middle class; her father
was a bank official, and a grandfather, whom she later credited as an inspiration,
was a district judge. Nooyi's mother also stretched her children's minds, making
up improvised games for Nooyi and her sister, Chandrika, based on world
problems. Nooyi had to place herself, for example, in the position of prime
minister of India. She loved to read and to watch Tamil-language film comedies.

American corporate world. Nooyibroke the mold in India's society, which was still
defined by strong gender roles. She played cricket and was a member of an all-girl
rock band. Even as a corporate executive she remained an enthusiastic If she gets
an idea, she goes after it. Theres no stopping her. In 2007, Indra Nooyi was
awarded Padma Bhushan by Government of India. In 2008, she was elected to
the fellowship of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Nooyi, now married and the mother of two daughters, believes that for any
woman, the people one loves are the bedrock of success. "Build around you a
terrific ecosystem, preferably with family," she advises. "But it's 'family' defined
every which way you want." It's a message she shares with her PepsiCo
employees a staggering 300,000 people report to her globally. "The times I feel
the greatest are when I'm coaching, developing talent, mentoring people to do
what they never thought they could. When you see your team blossoming and
growing, you say, 'Man, I'm doing good for the next generation.'
