TRANSCRIPT
Despite having the highest species richness of any region of the planet, we still have limited understanding of how the process of speciation unfolds in the Amazon basin. Here I explore the geography of speciation and the evolution of reproductive isolation in Amazonian birds using genomic datasets for 15 hybrid zones. I then use comparative analyses to address whether evolutionary rates in traits important for speciation like song and colour are accelerated in the tropics.

About the speakerJason Weir carried out his PhD studies at the University of British Columbia under the supervision of Dolph Schluter. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto Scarborough. His lab employs a variety of genomic, field and computational approaches to investigate how the process of speciation unfolds differently across latitudinal gradients.
