Call for Abstracts & Registration
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE SCIENTIFIC EVENTS:
1. Three- in- One Science Event
Bioislandcultures stands for Biodiversity, Islands, Culture and Society which seeks to provide an understanding of the global significance of biological diversity in small and sustainable islands vulnerable to the various natural disasters like typhoons, tidal surges, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes that will have impacts on the human populations and the unique flora and fauna in coastal and upland communities. For 2014, the first International Graduate Student Research Symposium on Bioislandcultures will focus on Biodiversity and Productivity in Abaca (Musa textilis) Farms; Mountain Streams, Rivers, Estuaries and Wetlands (REWs) of the coastal areas. Bioislandcultures is a platform of providing intellectual exchange and dialogues among teachers, researchers (undergraduate and graduate students), scientists, environmental practitioners, local leaders, women, youth, and other sectors of the changing coastal and upland communities in small islands in the Philippines and the different countries of the world. Bioislandcultures 2014 deliberately places in this international graduate student research symposium the global attention on the importance of the effects of typhoons on abaca (Musa textilis) biodiversity, agroecology and productivity.

October 20-22, 2014, Catanduanes Island, Philippines
BIOME, the Philippine National Biodiversity Meeting in Catanduanes Island is being held annually during the Catandungan Festival in October. This first and only regular annual national scientific meeting is being organized for the fourth time this 2014. Although dealing with a variety of themes, the annual national scientific meeting originally stood for the “Biodiversity Meeting in Catanduanes Island, Philippines on Climate Change, Sustainable Development, Innovations, Political Ecology and Social Representations in Nature Conservation” and was organized for the first time in October 2010 (BIOME1), in October 2011 (BIOME2-SEDTEC1) with Pacifictech/Hechanova & Co.; and for the third time as BIOME3-NCWB (National Conference on Water and Biodiversity) with the CSU College of Arts and Sciences as the main organizer. NCWB aims to initiate a culture and tradition of providing a venue for researchers, teachers and practitioners to present their studies, innovations/inventions and experiences; to share their knowledge and exchange ideas; and to collaborate on projects to further strengthen the fields of water science, biodiversity, climate change, food security, and sustainable development. The third scientific event is known as SEDTEC (Science Education and Technology) National Conference running for the second time this 2014 after it was organized in 2012. Typhoons are the major natural disturbances that agitatedly shape island landscape, seascape and persistently disturb societies and alter socio-economic and developmental agenda, a serious case in the Philippine islands frequented by typhoons. Many planners and governmental agencies pay most attention to damage caused by typhoons on infrastructures, properties and human lives. But it appears that the real focus must be on how the local people understand the necessity of preparedness and resiliency through massive Typhoon Education Campaign within the agenda of both public and private entities. Many islands of the Philippines and the Asia Pacific Region are ranked as risk places in the world in terms of full-spectrum disaster risk but the formulation of Typhoon Education Agenda is wanting which is Island-Specific or Location-Specific. With volatile social, economic, and geologic environments and the real threat of typhoons, tidal surges, tsunamis, flooding, landslides and earthquakes, the governments of different countries have made public appeal to raise awareness and reduce the impact of disasters. Typhoon disasters not only devastate property and the ecology, but also in general can cause striking and long-lasting impacts on Biological Diversity, Cultural Patterns and the Future of Societies particularly in islands. Thus, preparedness, local capabilities and resiliency are critical to reducing the impacts of typhoons in Bioislandcultures. The most recent typhoon in the Philippines (“Yolanda”) will be tackled this 2014 project that will comprise the areas of Biodiversity, Island Studies, Cultural and Socio-Anthropology. These are to be seen in the effects of typhoons on human and non-human populations within Climatology, Meteorology, Earth Sciences, the Medical-Nursing Sciences, Social Sciences, Local History or Area Studies, Culture Studies, Disability and Psychology Studies, the Humanities, and the Economic and Global Environment. 2. Methodology
a. Components The Bioislandcultures 2014 International Graduate Symposium on Island Biodiversity, Culture and Society with the 4th Philippine National Biodiversity Meeting (BIOME4) in Catanduanes Island, Philippines on Impacts of Typhoon on the Biodiversity and
Productivity of Abaca (Musa textilis) and 2nd Science, Education and Technology Conference (SEDTECII) (for the CSU College of Education and College of Information & Communication Technology on Integrating Typhoon Education in Coastal and Island Communities for a Disaster-Resilient Society will be rolled into a unified-integrated event (a conference and a symposium). These 3 in 1 unified/concurrent events (symposium, workshop, scientific meeting and conference) with a single pass or registration planned to have daily registration fee will focus on the Pre and Post-Typhoon Impacts and Lessons Learned from Typhoons “Yolanda”, “Pablo” and “Ondoy” in order to develop a Typhoon Education Agenda of the Philippines through intellectual exchange and dialogue during the scientific event. b. Steering Committees Steering Committees at the National and Local levels will be created to oversee the over-all management and implementation of the Project that will involve most of the NSD CAS faculty. The National Steering Committee will have meetings virtually and internet-based planning sessions in order to finalize the pre-symposium, symposium proper and post-symposium activities as presented in the succeeding paragraphs. SYMPOSIUM-MEETING-CONFERENCE PROPER There will be a single Opening Ceremony to be held at the Provincial Capitol Dome on the First Day, break into the three scientific events on the 2nd day for the parallel sessions at the Catanduanes State University; and on the 3rd day, a Common Closing Plenary Session wherein outputs of the Workshop for the Bioislandcultures, Consultative meeting for BIOME, and Typhoon Education Agenda for the SEDTEC are for presentation from 8:30 am to 12:00 NN and 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM for the Closing Activity and Socials thereafter to be held at the Catanduanes State University.

How to Travel to Virac, Catanduanes Catanduanes is an island province of the Philippines, located in the Region of Bicol, off the eastern coast of the Bicol Peninsula. Transportation options to the rest of the Philippines all connect through Virac. The main airport for the island is located just outside Virac. Cebu Pacific provides flights daily, which last 1 hour and 15 minutes directly to Manila. For those coming from Mindanao and the Visayas, Legaspi Airport connects to Tabaco City and take regular ferries to Catanduanes. There are regular ferries that connect Catanduanes in the municipalities of Virac and San Andres to the port of Tabaco City, from where one can take an overnight bus to Manila and to other destinations in Luzon. The primary mode of transportation in and around Catanduanes is by tricycle, multi-cabs, vans and some buses bound to the north of the island.
