BIOME• the world's major communities• is a community of plants and animals

living together in a certain kind of climate

• a regional ecosystem characterizedby distinct types of vegetation, animals, and microbes that havedeveloped under specific soil andclimatic conditions.

FRESHWATER BIOME• The Freshwater Biome accounts for

one fifth of the area of the Earthand provides half of the drinkingwater, one third of the water usedfor irrigation, and nearly ninetypercent of the world's bathwater.

• Has a low salt concentration —usually less than 1%.

ANIMALS IN STREAMS• Animals that live in a stream are

adapted to life in the fast lane.• Brook trout have strong, streamlined

bodies and powerful tail fins thatcan push against the current.

• Shade is very important in keepingthe stream cold.

SWAMPS• A swamp is any

wetland dominated by woody

plants.•

type of wetlandcharacterized byrelatively deep andwidespread areas of water whencompared to otherwetland varieties.

• have very lowelevation.

• can be broken into twomain categories:forested swampsand shrub swam s.

ANIMALS IN SWAMPS• Some animals live in the low-oxygen

water ( some fish, crayfish, shrimp, tadpoles, insect larvae , etc.)

• Some animals live at the surface of thewater (like alligators, caiman, nutria ,etc.)

Some animals live above the water (likebirds, insects, frogs, etc.)• Other animals live in the spongy areas

of land surrounding the swamp (likeraccoons, deer, earthworms, etc.).

ESTUARIES• The river meets the

sea in shallow,protected bays

• It serves a banquet of decaying plants

• Estuaries are placeswhere freshwaterrivers and streamsflow into theocean, mixing withthe seawater.

ESTUARIES• The estuary is a hostile environment for

most plants because salt dominates.• A few grow further back on the shore,

where they live in a fluctuatingenvironment of sea water and freshwater. These plants must cope with:

varying salinity levels – strong currents and storm waves – varying exposure to sunlight and wind – low oxygen levels in muddy soils.
