CAN BIODIESELWORK IN INDIA?CAN BIODIESELWORK IN INDIA?

India with just 2.4% of global area supportsmore than 16% of the human population and 17%

    of the cattle population

India is one of the largest importers of edible

    oil

Where do we find the oil for biodiesel?

A sustainable source of vegetable oil is to befound before we can think of biodiesel

According to the Economic Survey (1995-96), Govt of India, of thecultivable land area about 100-150 million hectares are classified as

    waste or degraded land

Jatropha (Jatropha curcas, Ratanjyot, wild castor) thrives on any

    type of soil

    Needs minimal inputs or management

Has no insect ,pests& not browsed by cattle or sheep

Can survive long periods of drought

    Propagation is easy

Yield from the 3rd year onwards and continues for 35-40 years

30% oil from seeds by expelling; 35% by solvent extraction

The meal after extraction an excellent organic manure (38%protein, N:P:K ratio 2.7:1.2:1)

Bio diesel esterification plant of 2 KL per day capacity was

commissioned in July 2006. This bio-diesel production plant

was sanctioned by GM/SER under law book item on out of

turn basis. Work for design, erection and commissioning

was awarded to M/s Malnad Extraction Ltd., Shimoga,

Karnataka @Rs.28.95 lakhs. Various trial production of bio-

diesel has been done through feed procured locally, total

3,800 litres (approx.) bio-diesel have been produced. This

produced bio-diesel has confirmed to IS:15607/2005 during

various lab testing. At present this bio-diesel is being used

in three SRC based coaching locomotive as B-5 blend.
