time of year to think about all the blessingsthat you have in your life. Many times wefocus on what we don’t have and forget toappreciate all that we do have. You never know, it could change some-one’s life. I remember hearing the story of a man who had ended his life, and with him they found a note that said, “If only one person had smiledat me today.” I’ll never forget that. Mountainside Fitness Founder Tom Hatten Releases “Dream On” For Charity

The Inspiring Memoir Chronicles the Highs of Starting a Business tothe Crashing Lows Including Horrific Personal Tragedy

In 1991 Mountainside Fitness Owner, Tom Hatten, had just $2,000 tohis name and a dream to open his own gym. He was just 22 years old anda student at Arizona State University at the time, but thanks to family andfriends and a perseverance to succeed, Hatten would go on to owning andoperating Arizona’s biggest fitness empire.

Now 30 years and 17 Mountainside Fitness locations later, Hattenreflects in his new memoir “Dream On” about this remarkable journeyand what it takes to build a business from the ground up. Hatten tells all, from the highs of starting his own business to the crashing lows includingbankruptcy, jail time and a horrific personal tragedy.

““Dream On” is a true and a very raw look at what it takes, the sacri-fices we make and also the poor decisions that can threaten to take it all away,” said Hatten. “Ididn’t want to hold anything back when I wrote this book, so it’s peppered with inspirationalmoments and humorous anecdotes, and really a no-holds-barred narra tive of this rollercoaster rideto fulfill one’s dream.”

Hatten, who is the former Chairman for Make-A-Wish Arizona and a huge supporter of numer-ous Valley nonprofits, says all proceeds from the book sales will go to Make-A-Wish® Arizona andthe Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“I have had the privilege of working with Tom Hatten for the past six years. During our firstmeeting Tom shared that he started fundraising for MDA as a kid by hosting carnivals and collect-ing donations. This same drive and passion has led Tom to achieve so much professional success.Tom truly believes in helping the community and this is evident through the various organizationshe supports. He is generous with his time, talents and treasures. MDA is very grateful to have Tomas a champion of our mission,” said Executive Director Sarah Levin, of MDA. 100 percent of theproceeds from the book sales will be split evenly between Make-A-Wish® Arizona and MDA.

“Make-A-Wish® Arizona is grateful for all the work Tom Hatten has done for our chapter, including his work as our Board Chair from 2015-2016 and his commitment by example with hisemployees at Mountainside Fitness. We are honored to be selected to receive proceeds from hisbook as we know those who read his words will be as inspired by his story as we have been by hisdedication to our Arizona wish kids,” said Elizabeth Reich, President/CEO of Make-A-Wish®

Arizona. Hatten who leaves no stone unturned in his fascinating and, at times, poignant memoir says life

experiences inspire the creative potential that lies hidden in all of us, motivating us to follow ourown burning desires and to continue to “Dream On.”

“My first gym was made exactly like I dreamed it in my head. What would happen along theway, I could have never imagined, but with every turn and twist, I’d like to say it’s made me andMountainside what it is today,” said Hatten.

“Dream On” is now on sale on Amazon at http://bit.ly/DreamOn_THatten. It is also availablefor purchase on AmazonKindle at http://bit.ly/DreamOn_kindle. It is available in both digital andpaperback copies. The book is also available at various Mountainside Fitness locations. v

Hollywood utilizes acombination of cardio-based equip-ment, body-weight andstrength/resistance exercises todeliver an all-encompassing, full-body workout. The Hollywood ses-sion also features a weekly DJ spin-ning a live mix during each class. Itis a workout experience unlike any-thing offered by any other fitnessstudio in the world. It’s a bold butwell deserved claim.

Audrey Gloss, Head Trainer of F45 Biltmore, suggests coming in aboutthree times per week to see results, like improved cardiovascular healthand stamina, and a boost to your metabolism. “HIIT is one of the mostefficient and effective ways to burn calories not only during the session, but for an extended time period after your workout is over, you willachieve what is called the after-burn. Combined with a well-balanced diet, our clients can expect to see significant weight loss, while reducing fat andbuilding muscle,” Goss explains. To see profound changes, she suggestschecking out the studio’s eight-week fitness challenge and building up toa schedule of four or five sessions per week. “HIIT training that incorpo-rates functional movements has shown to help increase bone density andprevent injuries during every day activities,” Gloss says.

“There's demand in the market for this unique fitness concept. F45 hasfilled the gap in the fitness space left by traditional gyms—where peoplepay a small membership fee to work out on their own— and high-cost per-sonal training sessions. When you enter an F45 studio you get instantaccess to a passionate, high energy team environment, led by world-classcoaches who motivate and challenge members in each session. Other fit-ness concepts leave out the nutritional advice and meal planning that youreceive with the F45 Challenge app.

Incorporating this training regimen with a nutrition plan, you will real-ize tremendous body composition changes; not only weight loss, but sig-nificant reduction in body fat and corresponding gains in muscle develop-ment. The 45 minutes will fly by, and the high definition TVs will keepyou on track, but the thing that distinguishes F45 the most is the vibe ofthe sessions. The intimacy of a small studio helps, but a lot of it has to dowith our trainers, whose energy really sets the tone for the tough work-outs. You will see results with F45 that you just won’t get anywhere else.”Evans explains.

The Joys of Holiday CookingBy Pam Vincent, General Manager, The

Adobe Restaurant at Arizona Biltmore Golf ClubOne of the many things I

love about the holiday sea-son is getting together withfriends and family. Whetherat my home, a family mem-ber’s home or at a restau-rant, food is usually at thecenter of holiday gather-ings. Cooking for a large

group can be stressful. To relieve some of yourstress, here are a few professional tips:

• Prepare Enough Food – Guidelines forhow much to cook per person: for entrées,about ½ pound of boneless poultry orground beef; 4 to 5 ounces of pasta; forsides, 3 to 4 ounces of veggies and 1 ½ounces of grains; and for dessert, abouttwo cookies or brownies.

• Use slow cookers, chafing dishes, orwarming trays to keep food at the righttemperature

• Avoid overstuffing your oven and considerwhat can be cooked or warmed on a grill

• Make large dishes that can easily be doubled• Instead of peeling potatoes, simply boil

them and slip the skin right off (just slit thepotato skin prior to boiling)

• Serve dishes that aren’t temperature-sensitive• Pick traditional crowd-pleasers• Include make-ahead dishes such as

lasagna• Serve buffet style rather than making indi-

vidual plates• Discard food sitting at room temperature

for longer than two hoursOf course, the stress associated with holiday

cooking can often overshadow the true meaningof the season. If our team at The AdobeRestaurant can assist in alleviating some of yourholiday stress, please allow us to do so. Withour To-Go-Be menu, we can help by catering aholiday luncheon or afternoon gathering offriends and family. Adobe gift cards make theperfect gift for friends, co-workers or hard-to-buy-for family members. A hearty breakfast ordelicious lunch at The Adobe Restaurant canprovide the energy necessary before holidayshopping, while our Adobe Patio makes a greatplace to relax and unwind with a warm (or cold)beverage after holiday shopping. Plus, for thoselooking for a last minute place to host your hol-iday party, we still have a few open dates fromwhich to choose.

I hope to see you and your family during theholiday season at The Adobe Restaurant. Onbehalf of the entire staff of The Adobe Restaurant,we hope you have a healthy, safe and joyousholiday season. Cheers and Happy Holidays! v

Golf’s New Rules Start in 2019By Tina Tombs, Golf Professional, Arizona Biltmore Golf Club

In my November article, we featured a few of golf’s new rules that will gointo effect at the beginning of 2019. The following are the remaining rulechanges which are geared towards making the game easier and faster to play.

Club-length, not inches, will be the measurement for relief – One of theMarch 2017 proposals called for either a 20-inch or an 80-inch standard, butgolfers responded by saying “How are we going to actually measure that?”The governing bodies agreed, going back to club lengths instead.

No more penalty for accidentally moving a ball on the green – You arestill penalized, however, if it is “virtually certain” you caused it to move on purpose.

An extra relief option has been added for an unplayable ball in a bunker – Yep, more good newsfor those that struggle in the sand. You can play the ball to be outside the sand with a two-stroke penalty.

The rules also give your integrity some latitude – A player is given “reasonable judgement”when estimating or measuring a spot, point, line, area or distance. Your placement will be upheld, even if video evidence later shows it wasn’t in the exact right spot.

You also are no longer required to announce when you are lifting a ball to identify or seeif it’s damaged – The new rules are really trusting you on this.

You’re no longer allowed five minutes to look for a lost ball – Your search party now hasthree minutes. Let’s be honest, you weren’t going to find it in five, anyway.

And a player can take no more than 40 seconds to play a stroke – A change made to help speedof pace of play, although admittedly this one could be a tad hard to enforce at the amateur ranks.

Sadly, one of the most debated rule changes was not made – That would be relief from afairway divot. “One of the primary objectives for the overall initiative is to make the rules easierto understand and apply, but to also make sure we maintained the traditions and principlesbehind the game,” said Thomas Pagel, USGA Senior Director of Rules & Amateur Status. “Andthe principles are to play the ball as it lies and the course as you find it. So, to write a rule thatallows a player to sort of deviate from that, was not something we were wanting to do.” (fromGolf Digest, March 2018)

All the rules of golf can be downloaded to your mobile device through the USGA.org websiteor through the APP store. Enjoy the new rules and your game!

By Kathleen MalcolmIt seems St. Mary’s has a tradition. They didn’t actually know it in

2007, but now a group is part of something bigger. Friends stayed intouch over the years, after all, many had gone to elementary schooltogether, and then attended St. Mary’s Girls’ High School. The classreunions came and went, but something happened in 2007 at the 50thReunion of the class of 1957. They expanded their small groups into aonce-a-month luncheon meeting at Keegan’s Grill in Phoenix. Keegan’sManager/Owner Spencer is fond of calling this group “The Belles of St.Mary’s.” Carole Wolf Schwietz remembered her aunt was part of “TheBelles of St. Mary’s” as the class of 1927 and they met to eat andexchange hugs over the years. History repeating itself? An article waswritten in November of 1990 about the class of 1927, with photos, remi-niscing about these ladies starting school together in 1915 and whatPhoenix was like then; kids going through school together and ending upsharing experiences for a lifetime.

Enter the class of 1957. In elementary school, Mary Hart Ajamie,Carole Wolf Schwietz and Peggy Weisel Nichols (not pictured) rememberwearing high top shoes, and their mothers’ curled their hair in long fingercurls every day. Carole and Peggy’s mother sewed for them and madetheir dresses really short. The nuns would pin a note on their dresses asthey left for home telling their mothers to make their dresses longer, butthey both ignored them.

The girls played in the band in elementary school and high school. They marched in every parade that came along. In elementary school, thenuns put on a concert each year in the social hall. It usually ran for twoweekends and the social hall was packed for each performance. TV cameto Phoenix while they were in elementary school and they were so des-perate for programming. They sometimes put on programs. On Saturdaymornings at the radio station, they read parts of radio plays and createdsound effects. The Home Ec class put on a lovely fashion show eachspring featuring clothing they had made during the year. It was a smalltown when they were growing up, and they had lots of press coverage foreverything in the Republic and Gazette. It was big stuff when Porter’sstore put in the first escalator.

They had money for the streetcar fare to go home after school, but theywould go to the drug store at 5th and Van Buren (Beverly Burke’s) andhave a coke and walk home together.

In High School, they sold tostadas every Friday during Lent to raisemoney for the Jr./Sr. prom when they were Juniors. They would alwaystake leftovers to the Boys’ High to Fr. Cletus as he loved them. The girlsand their dates were invited to the convent before the prom for cookiesand punch with the nuns so they could see their dresses. We suspected itwas just to make sure they were modest enough!

Each fall, each class built a float for homecoming at somebody’shouse. It was great team building and it gave them chance to flirt with theboys. Even though there was a Boys’ High and a Girls’ High, we hadcombined class meetings and assemblies in the Gym. St. Mary’s High iscurrently located at 2525 North Third Street, only the Basilica remains atThird Street and Monroe.

Around Christmastime the group numbers around 16 at Keegan’s,sometimes even 20, but typically there are 12 regulars. During the year,

these ladies spread themselves around the community, one has a prisonministry (jail actually) and misses the luncheon and they laugh becauseshe will be “in jail.” One still cans preserves and shares at the holidays, one reads to children in schools, one is a hospice volunteer, one was theKnight on a horse at Green Gables on 24th Street and Thomas during highschool. Weekends will find one representing her church visiting the sick, and many keep up with political groups, both locally and nationally. Oneof us came all the way from Buckeye for her school years and still comesfrom Buckeye for lunch. Some still hold jobs and keep very busy andhave to fit in the luncheon each month.

Over the years, this group steadfastly supported their classmates asthey dealt with age-related illnesses that kept them bedridden; they enjoyrecalling how they brought Macayo’s (often) to a confined classmate whowondered if Macayo’s was still out there. These ladies can be seensinging softly at the Parkinson’s Disease own chorus group, TrembleClefs, and brought a scaled-down version of lunch at Keegan’s to a class-mate as Alzheimer’s took over.

Early on a classmate compiled an email list to send out the lunchnotices each month and this has morphed into including notices regardingobituaries and illness and requests for major prayer. Funerals in the Valleyarea for their classmates, Girls’ High or Boys’ High, whether they kept intouch or not, will see a gaggle of them present to honor their memory. v

you make the best decisions when selecting products for your garden.Organic soil has similar components to "non organic" bags of soil.

Garden soils are composed of forest peat, processed forest products, coir, sphagnum peat moss, fertilizer and a wetting agent. Manyorganic soils include natural ingredients such as sphagnum peat moss, forest products, coir, organic fertilizer and yucca. However nutrientscan be derived from plant or animal sources, organic plant foods, andfertilizers may include poultry litter, feather meal, meat meal andblood meal.

Organic matter helps support friendly microorganisms-microbes-that exist in the soil to break down the animal and plant matter to releasenutrients into the soil. This improves soil structure and aerates the soil, which results in deeper rooting of the plants and a favorable growingenvironment. In most cases, more organic plant food, vs. synthetic, isrequired to provide the right amount of nutrients that plants need.

Be sure to keep all unused products away from small hands andpaws. Happy gardening. v

Wax In, Wax OutIt’s time to get real about your ears and clear out that excess wax! Wax-

Rx saves a trip to the doctor’s office with its safe, pain-free, doctor-devel-oped cleaning system that optimizes hearing and ear health. Trapped earwax can be tough to remove, but Wax-Rx is tougher—with one quickwash, users can completely remove stubborn ear wax within minutes.

Reusable and affordable, Wax-Rx was developed by the same team thatinvented the popular professional ear wax removal systems used in hospi-tals, clinics and doctor’s offices for more than 20 years. With a system that includes a profession-al-grade ear washer, a handy basin (to avoid making a mess), and ear wax removal drops, the pHconditioning rinse powder is what steals the show, leaving ears with a clean, refreshed feeling.

Excessive ear wax buildup is a common cause of hearing loss, but it can also cause dizziness, earache, tinnitus, odor, itching and discharge. Ear wax is also the number one cause of hearingaid failure. By using Wax-Rx and following three simple steps — Prepare, Wash & Rinse — userscan carefully and effectively clear out their ears in the comfort of their home and address theseproblems.

What causes ear wax buildup? Using cotton swabs, ear buds, or hearing aids, and the naturalaging process can all cause wax buildup. An individual’s own anatomy can sometimes prevent earwax from flowing naturally. Even a person’s ethnicity can influence stickier or flakier ear wax thatcan be prone to chronic impaction. The Wax-Rx system is a way to clear out the blockage andremove wax in a way physicians approve, no matter the underlying cause.
