Overview . Automation solutions for natural gas 05

A natural gas transport station is a highly complex installation comprising piping as well as motor-driven compressors. As the grid lynchpin, such stations must meet extremely high automation and controller technology standards. The advent of the EU’s policy of non-discrimina-tory access has resulted in a situation where a handful of natural gas operators are in charge of all natural gas transport stations and control all of Europe’s natural gas grids. These operators expect Bilfinger GreyLogix to provide them with tailor-made solutions that conform with German (TÜV) quality and safety standards, and that also deliver impeccable performance based on our extensive experience. This is a challenge that we very much enjoy meeting.

We provide automation solutions for new installations, and migrate systems in existing installations so as to upgrade them to the current state of the art. In so doing, we develop customised technology for specific compressor unit control systems, as well as solutions for complete station control systems. Thanks to our extensive know-how, we have developed black-box components such as complete, standalone unit regulators for gas turbines and compressors, via standardised PCS 7-based regulation and control software, thus providing operators with across-the-board controller technology solutions that are devoid of artificial interfaces. Specifically, in recent years we have outfitted various types of gas turbines such as the GE Frame 1 and 3 and the Rolls Royce Avon with new instrumentation, as well as regulation and control systems.

Energy … as you like it Natural gas compressors and transport stations

Our portfolio includes the following: – Electrical and control technology for station control systems and unit control systems– Detailed project engineering services for software, hardware and instrumentation– Planning and realisation of electrical and control system cubicles– Software development– Factory testing – Installation and commissioning– Optimisation

In view of the high risk involved, we place tremendous importance on providing systems that deliver maximum reliability and safety. To this end, we have ISO 9001, SCENARIO, PCS 7 and Safety Specialist certification. Our construction activities are realised under the aegis of a robust HSE management system.

In addition to major energy companies, we also count among our customers plant construction vendors, which carry out their projects in partnership with us. In this process, the compressor vendors take care of the mechanical side of things, while Bilfinger GreyLogix fabricates the unit control cubicles and develop the software for them. We have realised such installations for PSE, MAN Turbo, and Siemens PG-I.

In addition to the aforementioned control technology solutions, Bilfinger GreyLogix also provides the related control technology, low voltage and motor control centre (MCC) low-voltage switching stations, which we manufacture ourselves. In so doing, we provide a package comprising a backup power solution, an uninterruptible power supply, and fire and gas alarm systems, thus leveraging our extensive production depth and minimising customer interfaces during the project with the aim of bringing it to a successful conclusion.

In order for natural gas to be transported to the end customer, it must be converted from a high to a low pressure state, since the last mile is operated under low pressure. In addition, the gas is distributed across a number of measurement and regulation stretches so as to allow users to be provisioned according to individual need. Also, the gas needs to be preheated via a heat generation installation, so as to prevent regulation and measurement valves from freezing secondary to gas temperature drops during the expansion process.

Bilfinger GreyLogix offers complete electronic equipment, including volume converters, instrumentation and controllers. This equipment, which allows for the safe operation of gas pressure regulation and measurement installations, is based on highly standardised automation systems that are scaled to the number of standard rails in use. For such projects, we also offer top-quality solutions and guarantee that your project will be fulfilled expedi-tiously.

Energy by the cubic metre: natural gas storage in caverns Gas storage caverns (a by-product of salt dome mining) are the ideal natural gas storage method. In this method, after being funnelled into underground caverns under high pressure, the gas is filtered and dried when needed for export to the gas grid. Gas caverns occur in constel-lations of cavities comprising an underground and above-ground element. We provide control technology for the automation of above-ground facilities.

Across-the-board station automation In the interest of promoting the increasingly multi-cycle natural gas storage process in terms of its physical realisation as well as from a safety standpoint, companies are increasingly investing in across-the-board automation solutions for their gas storage facilities. We specialise in solutions for this sector, which still has relatively few vendors in it. Based on our expertise in this arena, we have outfitted numerous storage cavern stations, including the Kraak, Krummhörn, Friedeburg (in progress), Peckensen and Etzel II and III facilities.

Well SuppliedNatural gas storage Inasmuch as the amount of natural gas in demand over the course of the year fluctuates, natural gas has to be stored during lower-demand periods so as to keep gas prices low. But on account of deregulation, natural gas is now traded on a natural gas spot market and futures market; and thus the availability of a series of natural gas storage tanks makes the gas stored in them a highly desirable product. This in turn spurs investments in natural gas storage technology.

Normally, we also provide not only station control technology for such facilities, but also the requisite electronics solutions, including emergency shutdown systems, instrumentation, fire and gas detection systems, uninterruptible power supplies, low-voltage grid switching stations, and diesel-driven emergency power generators. The centrepiece of our portfolio in this domain has always been across-the-board automation of the entire above-ground installation using the Simatic PCS 7 control system comprising the following elements:

– Above-ground piping– Gas compressors – Gas drying units; boiler systems – Caverns– Measurement stations – Power supply solutions – Auxiliary installations

This means that all of the station’s system components, many of which are still manually operated, are automated via (a) highly available, redundant controllers with programmable memories; (b) robust networks; and (c) natural gas-specific control software. Such solutions enable the installation operator to (a) control, manage and monitor all relevant station processes; and (b) rest assured that the solution will be highly available and takes account of all safety related factors. In such settings, station regulation systems that take account of compressor performance characteristics improve installation efficiency and reduce costs as well as apparatus wear and tear.

In the interest of further optimising gas infeeding and release processes in an automated installation, we have developed a dynamic routing system which, among other functions, monitors control system-level availability with respect to the requisite components, defines and nominates routes based on the predefined routes, and balances loads among the various compressors so as to attain the desired number of hours. In carrying out these various processes, the system also takes cavern filling status into account. Thus, for example, a cavern that is exhibiting low pressure will be brought up to the pressure of the other caverns so that the cavern can be filled as a pool, in a second step. The system also responds dynami-cally to component failures and automatically activates the relevant backup component. Despite this extensive automation, an interactive MMI that provides a clearly laid-out schematics-based graphic of the route enables the operator to intervene in the system manually at any time. These features provide installation operators with invaluable support for their daily processes and greatly ease the task of gas infeeding and releasing.

A Solution that almost runs itselfNomix: Technical Storage Management System (TSMS)

BILFINGER GREYLOGIX

012 Natural Gas Transport . NOMIX – Technical Storage Management System (TSMS)

As the development of natural gas storage facilities require consideration for the most appropriate product portfolio and related customer base, it is necessary to accurately predict the possibilities and limits of one’s own storage facility. It is becoming increasingly common to utilise natural gas storage systems as trading points with multiple cycles per day. Technical facilities and their operators are required to remain flexible and react quickly to the hourly changing nominations, all the while ensuring that the facilities remain secure and the technical equipment does not experience excessive wear. Taking into account further optimization factors/parameters, such as – main-tenance cycles, resource conditions, energy prices, etc – the demand for better gas storage management is even more apparent.

Bilfinger GreyLogix’s NomiX system is specifically designed for such situations in order to test in advance all required nomination scenarios which lead to carrying out optimized operating modes and methods. NomiX simulates nomination scenarios (below and above ground), links with real-time systems technology (for status and count values), commercial trade systems (for pending nomina-tions) as well as other simulation programs. The results provide the plant operator an accurate basis for fast, decision making. NomiX prepares clear and easy to follow data, which are presented over an easily understandable Cockpit. Additionally, the nomination simulations are executed within a range (+10 %, -10 %), making it possible to clearly see when operational boundaries will be potentially breached. Further authorisation and testing cycles can be installed via IT-supported workflows.

With this knowledge, operators and marketers are taken through a learning curve that goes into detailed over the influences of the entire process right up to the sales and marketing of the storage facility products (product portfolio).

What is truly special about NomiX is the integration and further use of programs and databases that are already at the fingertips of operator or in use at the storage facility. The NomiX system integrates itself into the already existing software landscape between the control system, monitoring equipment, and reporting and maintenance software (e.g. SAP EAM, Acron) without the need to redevelop anything.

That way the operator is able to utilize his expert operations (including any custom features) within an integrated system. This is made possible through open communication structures with which complex IT installations and maintenance costs can be completely avoided.

Already at several reference sites, NomiX has been proven to make the operation of gas storage facilities both safe and efficient while achieving the goal of optimising returns. NomiX assists operators of natural gas storage facilities in making an optimal selection of assets and which leads to safe and efficient facility operations.
