WORLDUS HAS WORLD‘S LARGEST DATA CENTRE FOOTPRINTThe US accounts for 44% of major cloud and internet data centre sites, followed by China which accounts for 10%, according to new Q2 data from Synergy Research Group, reported Networks Asia.

The two leading countries are then followed by Australia, UK, Japan, Singapore, Germany and the Netherlands, each of which accounts for 4-5% of the total. The research is based on an analysis of the data centre footprint of 13 of the world’s major cloud and internet service firms, including the largest operators in IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, search, social networking and e-commerce. In aggregate the companies now have almost 150 major data centre sites.

On average each of the thirteen firms had eleven data centre sites. The companies with the broadest data centre footprint are the leading hyperscale cloud providers – AWS, IBM and Microsoft. Each has 20 or more data centre locations with at least one in each of the four regions – North America, APAC, EMEA and Latin America. Google, Oracle and Rackspace also have a notably broad data centre presence. The remaining firms tend to have their data centres focused primarily in either the US (Salesforce, Facebook, eBay, Yahoo) or China (Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba).

“The country distribution of major data centres clearly reflects two things – the US dominance of cloud and internet technologies; and the scale and unique characteristics of the Chinese market,” said John Dinsdale, a Chief Analyst and Research Director at Synergy Research Group. “The ranking also reflects the relative importance of smaller countries that are often used as regional hubs – Hong Kong, Singapore, Netherlands and Ireland. Until recently India was an omission from the list but Microsoft has just opened its first major cloud data centres in the country and both AWS and IBM will soon be following suit. n

TELEFONICA AND CHINA UNICOM SIGN GLOBAL DATA CENTRE DEALTelefónica and China Unicom have agreed to share their international data centre capabilities as a first step towards broader and larger scale cloud cooperation. Initially the agreement will focus on three major data centres from each operator with the inclusion of additional facilities over time. The cooperation across the cloud computing service segment will include, among others, IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) with virtual servers and multi-cloud solutions. These additional initiatives are designed to further enhance the global capabilities of both companies, reported Datacentres.com.

Specifically, China Unicom’s customers will be able to benefit from Telefónica’s three main data centres located in Brazil (Sao Paulo), USA (Miami) and Spain (Alcalá de Henares in Madrid). This will be further enhanced as Telefónica commits additional investment towards new infrastructure, facilities and multi-cloud solutions. Conversely, Telefónica will be able to leverage the robust cloud capabilities of China Unicom’s data centres located across China in Langfang, Shanghai and Chongqing to enable end-to-end service delivery for its multinational customers.

Combining strong service capabilities and comprehensive data centre facilities enables both organisations to fully address their respective markets in contrast to a standalone approach. The benefits this delivers include more efficient aggregation, easier sharing of data, opportunities to develop common data platforms and foster global collaboration plus the ability to leverage economies of scale. Importantly, both companies bring many unique attributes to the agreement, creating a win-win combination. n

THE FUTURE OF THE DATA CENTRE IS SOFTWARE-DEFINEDThe software-defined data centre (SDDC) is crucial to the long-term evolution of an agile digital business according to research company Gartner. It is not, however, the right choice for all IT organizations currently, reported a Company press release.

“Infrastructure and operations leaders need to understand the business case, best use cases and risks of an SDDC,” said Dave Russell, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. “Due to its current immaturity, the SDDC is most appropriate for visionary organizations with

advanced expertise in I&O engineering and architecture.”

An SDDC is a data centre in which all the infrastructure is virtualized and delivered “as-a-service.” This enables increased levels of automation and flexibility that will underpin business agility through the increased adoption of cloud services and enable modern IT approaches such as DevOps. Today, most organizations are not ready to begin adoption and should proceed with caution.

By 2020, however, Gartner predicts the programmatic capabilities of an SDDC will be

considered a requirement for 75% of Global 2000 enterprises that seek to implement a DevOps approach and a hybrid cloud model.

“I&O leaders can’t just buy a ready-made SDDC from a vendor,” said Mr. Russell. “First, they need to understand why they need it for the business. Second, they need to deploy, orchestrate and integrate numerous parts, probably from different vendors.” Moreover, aside from a lot of deployment work – new skills and a cultural shift in the IT organization are needed to ensure this approach delivers results for the business. n

WORLDWIDE CLOUD IT INFRASTRUCTURE MARKET TO GROW 24% According to the research house, IDC Worldwide Quarterly Cloud IT Infrastructure Tracker, total spending on cloud IT infrastructure (server, storage, and Ethernet switch, excluding double counting between server and storage) will grow by 24.1% and will reach US$32.6 billion in 2015. This amount will account for a third of the overall end user spending on enterprise IT infrastructure, up from 27.9% in 2014. In comparison, spending on IT infrastructure deployed in traditional, non-cloud, environments will decline by -1.6% in 2015, although at US$66.8 billion will remain the largest segment of the market. Spending on private cloud IT infrastructure in 2015 will grow by 15.8% year over year to US$12.1 billion, while spending on public cloud IT infrastructure will increase by 29.6% to US$20.5 billion, reported Market Watch.

IDC expects that spending on cloud IT infrastructure in 2015 will grow across all regions except Central and Eastern Europe, which is disturbed by political and economic turmoil that is having a negative impact on IT spending. For all three technologies – server, storage and Ethernet switch – growth in spending will exceed 20%, with spending on servers growing at the highest rate, 25.5%.

For the five-year forecast period, IDC expects that cloud IT infrastructure spending will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15.1% and will reach US$53.1 billion by 2019 accounting for 46% of the total spending on enterprise IT infrastructure. At the same time, spending on non-cloud IT infrastructure will decline at -1.7% CAGR. Spending on public cloud IT infrastructure will grow at a higher rate than spending on private cloud IT infrastructure – at 16.3% vs 13.2% CAGR. In 2019, IDC expects service providers will spend US$33.6 billion on IT infrastructure for delivering public cloud services, while spending on private cloud IT infrastructure will reach US$19.4 billion. n

The European Court of Justice has said the Safe Harbour agreement – allowing the self-certification on the issue of privacy protection by tech firms - between the US and Europe is invalid.

The Safe Harbour agreement – which came into effect in 2000 - was designed to provide a "streamlined and cost-effective" way for US firms to get data from Europe without breaking its rules, the BBC reported.

The EU forbids personal data from being transferred to and processed in parts of the world that do not provide "adequate" privacy protections. So, to make it easier for US firms - including the tech giants - to function, Safe Harbour was introduced to let them self-certify that they are carrying out the required steps.

The European Court of Justice said that the Safe Harbour agreement did not eliminate the need for local privacy watchdogs to check US firms were taking adequate data protection measures.

The agreement was challenged as a result of a case bought by privacy campaigner Max Schrems who asked the Irish Data Protection Commission to audit what material Facebook might be passing on. The case eventually reached the European Court which has now passed down it’s verdict.

"I very much welcome the judgement of the court, which will hopefully be a milestone when it comes to online privacy," said Max Schrems on learning of the judgement.

But others warned it could have far-reaching consequences.

"Thousands of US businesses rely on the Safe Harbour as a means of moving information to the US from Europe," said Richard Cumbley from the law firm Linklaters. "Without Safe Harbour, they will be scrambling to put replacement measures in place."

This could therefore see an increase in the number of US firms setting up data centres on European soil.

“U.S. companies must look at local operations to process data,” said Bharat Mistry, a consultant at Trend Micro, a cybersecurity firm told the Wall Street Journal. According to Mr. Mistry, this would lead to tighter control and enforcement by the EU and additional investment into Europe in the form of extra jobs in data processing.

Today’s announcement form US software company Netsuite with regard to the setting up on new EU based centres in Ireland and Holland already cited this as a reason. In a company statement the firm said “NetSuite’s EU data centres will enable companies to store their NetSuite business data physically in the European Union. This is especially significant given that the EU Court of Justice has just declared the EU-US Safe Harbour framework invalid.”

Apple, Google and Amazon have all set up – or have annocued plans to set up data centres in Europe in recent years. n

WORLDWIDE IT SPENDING TO SURPASS $US3.6 TRILLION IN 2016Research house, Gartner as part of its latest Forecast Alert: IT Spending, Worldwide, Q3, 2015 Update, has forecast worldwide IT spending to surpass US3.6 trillion in 2016, a 1.5% increase from 2015, reported ARN.

Gartner also predicted spending on the hardware side of the Internet of Things will exceed US$2.5 million every minute in 2016.

Peter Sondergaard, Gartner senior vice-president and global head of research, said “Dynamic algorithms are the core of new customer interactions. Products and services will be defined by the sophistication of their algorithms and services. Organisations will be valued, not just on their Big Data, but the algorithms that turn that data into actions, and ultimately impact customers,” he said. n

INTERCONNECTED ENTERPRISES TO DOUBLE BY 2017Global data centre company Equinix, has unveiled the findings of its Enterprise of the Future survey, which uncovered a rapidly accelerating global demand for interconnection that will transform IT strategies over the next two years, a Company press release reported.

Studying the priorities and perspectives of more than 1,000 IT decision makers across 14 countries, the Enterprise of the Future survey revealed significant momentum towards the adoption of interconnection-dependent IT strategies by enterprises seeking to drive revenue growth. By 2017, 84% of IT leaders surveyed will deploy IT infrastructure where interconnection – defined as direct, secure physical or virtual connections between a company and its partners, customers and employees – is at the core, compared to only 38%t today. The survey also indicates that interconnection can create millions of dollars in value.

In the interconnected era business models are increasingly interdependent and consumers and employees alike consider anytime, anywhere, any device connectivity the standard. Organizational expansion, ubiquitous user access and the sourcing of external business and IT services to cloud-based providers are forcing enterprises to have more points of engagement with more end users and business partners across an ever-widening physical and logical footprint. Existing IT architectures were not built to support this level of dynamic engagement and distributed coverage, and the Enterprise of the Future survey shows enterprises responding with a massive strategic and behavioural shift away from centralized corporate resources to distributed, interconnection-centric IT infrastructure.

The number one business priority for nearly half of the survey respondents is to drive revenue, and interconnection was at the core of all the strategies cited as key to achieving this goal. In fact, 3-in-5 businesses believe interconnection with employees, partners and customers is "very important" to their company's ability to compete. Nearly half of the companies surveyed are currently pursuing direct connections to cloud platforms, with the vast majority (about 4-in-5) seeing this as a critical need to address within five years. And, most notably, of the enterprises already deploying interconnection strategies, more than one-third are reaping a total value of more than $10 million from revenue gains and cost savings.

More than 1,000 IT decision makers (CIOs, CTOs, chief architects and network and application vice presidents) from the following countries were interviewed for this survey: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Dubai, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, Switzerland, U.S., and U.K.

The survey found that the top strategies IT leaders are using to drive revenue are all dependent on interconnection. The No. 1 revenue growth strategy, cited by nearly 69% of respondents, is deploying infrastructures to support new product offerings. Other essential interconnection-driven strategies include: creating new channels or systems of engagement between the enterprise and its customers, partners and employees; deploying infrastructures in new geographies; and embedding or distributing intelligence (analytics, data, content) across business processes, regions or office locations to gain greater customer insights and make faster, more accurate business decisions. n

BRITISH AIRWAYS CHOOSES JUNIPER NETWORKS FOR DATA CENTREJuniper Networks has announced it will work with global airline, British Airways, to build a private cloud data centre and IP/MPLS core backbone using Juniper Networks technology. The new private cloud infrastructure will run many of the applications that underpin British Airways’ operations, including ticketing, check-in and baggage tracking reported Datacentres.com.

British Airways sought to upgrade its data centre and needed a cost-effective, reliable and scalable platform that could service its needs. Following a rigorous competitive process, the airline selected the MetaFabric Architecture from Juniper Networks, a simplified, open and secure data centre architecture that accelerates deployment of new services and applications at scale. The fast

response and agility of Juniper’s cloud technology and its emphasis on business continuity are some of the features that attracted British Airways. The upgraded network core will link British Airways’ data centres and other operational sites around the U.K. to help ensure fast, reliable connectivity and digital communications.

The private cloud is an underlying component of British Airways’ new Flight Management and Customer Management systems being introduced this year.

To help protect its investment and enable greater agility and long-term business capacity planning, British Airways selected the MetaFabric Architecture, comprising Juniper Networks QFabric

System and EX Series Ethernet Switches, to create a data centre infrastructure that can easily grow with the airline’s business demands.

The QFabric System, a fully integrated and automated set of components working together as a single logical switch, delivers high-performance, any-to-any connectivity at scale and simplified management across the data centre.

To create a resilient, flexible, high-performance core backbone for its nationwide network infrastructure, British Airways selected Juniper Networks MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers and EX Series Ethernet Switches. TELECITYGROUP OPENS DUBLIN DATA CENTREThe European data centre provider, Telecity Group – soon to be acquired by Equinix - has opened its DUB4 facility in Ballycoolin, west Dublin, the company’s fourth such facility in Ireland, reported Tech Central.

The new facility totalling some 2,500 sq m, was launched by Minister for Health and TD for the constituency, Leo Varadkar who said that “In the last few years we have made a big effort to create a welcoming environment for Big Data and data centres here in Ireland.” “Data centres are essential if we are going to remain at the vanguard for Big Data.”

“We have seen a significant increase in demand from new and existing customers for high capacity, diverse and low latency connectivity – especially to the United States,” said Maurice Mortell, VP of emerging markets and managing director, TelecityGroup Ireland. “It was this high demand for TelecityGroup data centres in Ireland that drove our major expansion in Ireland in 2011.”

Despite being a multi-tenant facility where workloads can be as varied as the number of clients hosted, TelecityGroup Ireland expects the PUE to be around 1.2, putting it in the highly efficient category, according to Uptime Institute figures which put average DC PUE ratings at 1.7 in 2014. n

INTEROUTE ANNOUNCES SIGNIFICANT NETWORK EXPANSION IN THE NETHERLANDSInteroute, owner and operator of one of Europe’s largest networks, has announced that it has expanded its network in the Netherlands. By extending its Amsterdam city network, Interoute is adding 43 route km of fibre optic cables and increasing network capacity by 21% in its Amsterdam city network. Part of this expansion includes the addition of 22 route km of cable between the Amsterdam Science Park and Amsterdam South-East areas of the city. The improved connectivity in these areas will support businesses in the region, by enabling more high capacity data to flow and adding diverse resilient routes in this high traffic area, reported Datacentres.com.

Over the last three years Interoute has invested in the expansion of its Amsterdam city network to meet increasing demands for higher capacity. The current city network spans 230km of duct routes, and more than 275 route km of fibre optic cables, and is continuing to grow.

Amsterdam is one of the largest European markets for both collocation and international capacity. Regional interconnectivity trends show Asia, Africa and Europe decreasing their reliance on internet traffic routed via the US and instead increasing their dependency on connectivity via Europe. Thanks to this, Amsterdam looks set to remain a primary global hub. Interoute’s global integrated network and data centre platform provides customers with an innovative and cost effective platform that connects the company’s data centre in the Netherlands with another 13 Virtual Data Centres around the world. n

EVRY PARTNERS WITH IBM IBM and Nordic IT services company EVRY have signed and announced a US$1 billion long-term partnership in which IBM was selected as EVRY’s premier provider of cloud infrastructure services. As part of the agreement, IBM will transform EVRY’s existing infrastructure services by using IBM’s proven methodology and global expertise, and giving the company access to IBM’s global cloud resources and capabilities, a Company press release reported.

This includes providing services running on IBM’s Cloud infrastructure services, SoftLayer, based in Fet/Oslo data centre later next year. DATA CENTRE DEMAND SET TO RISE EVEN HIGHER AS CONFIDENCE IS ON THE UP

The annual survey of the owners, builders and occupiers of 2.1 million sq m of European technical real estate, conducted by the independent research company iXConsulting, revealed that 70% of respondents believe the next 12 months will see an increase in demand, with the majority (77%) of developer and investor responders having already expanded their portfolio of data centre stock in the last year, reported Datacentres.com.

It is expected that over the next five years the growth in demand for data centre services will be driven by IT and Cloud Service Providers. Over 70% of respondents identified this sector as their top ranked source of demand, well ahead of the next category of Banking & Financial Services, which was voted top by just 19% of those surveyed.

However, despite overall rising levels of confidence, there were concerns expressed over the industry’s ability to continue to match supply with demand. Over half of respondents (55%) thought that a pinch point had developed in the design and build process with regard to sufficiently skilled professional contractor staff. Equally, a further (54%) agreed that predicted construction cost inflation of between 10-20% over the next three years will have a negative impact on development across Europe.

Respondents to the survey collectively operate across 28 European countries. While strong growth was recorded in the traditional centres of London, Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam, due primarily to their relative maturity, stability, advanced general infrastructure and strong fibre connectivity, there was also a growing interest in more secondary and tertiary centres. Significantly, almost 60% agreed that a rise in the cost of land and total build cost inflation would see demand shifting away from Tier 1 centres and towards new competitive locations. A number of Scandinavian countries – namely Finland, Sweden and Norway – proved particularly popular, with one quarter of respondents citing them as potential beneficiaries. Turkey was chosen as a favoured location by 15% of respondents, with Eastern European countries such as Bulgaria, Romania and the Czech Republic also proving relatively popular.

All of these newly emerging growth centres were cited as areas that could benefit from cheaper sources of renewable energy. This reflects the finding that the most important driver in the decision making process for choosing a new data centre is the availability, security and sustainability of power. Just over half (53%) of respondents ranked it as their number one factor, and around four-fifths placed it in one of the top two positions of importance, alongside cost of land and fibre connectivity. Furthermore, over 80% expect to see a rise in their data centre power consumption over the next three years, reiterating the need for more efficient power delivery and usage methods to ease the financial burden, along with adhering to the legislative and ethical requirement for greener energy. n

IRISH APPLE DATA CENTRE COULD BE DELAYEDApples plans for a large new data centre in the Irish county of Galway may be delayed following the lodging of two objections with the planning appeals board, which could result in a delay of four months, the Irish Independent reported.

Apple plans to build a 25,000sq m data centre on a 500 acre site near Athenry in Co Galway. The facility – which was expected to be operational in 2017 - will help run online services, including the iTunes store, App store and Siri.

Galway County Council granted planning permission earlier this month; two objections have now been lodged with the board. It is understood that both are from local residents.

According to an Irish Independent report the objections are believed to centre on concerns about traffic, including the impact that trucks travelling to and from the site will have on nearby homes during the construction period. There is also concern about the impact rock blasting will have on drinking water wells. Objections have also been raised about the impact the development will have on wildlife.

If further objections follow, as parties which made submissions to the local authority have 15 days to appeal to An Bord Pleanala. The board is expected to deal with cases within 18 weeks, meaning a final decision is unlikely before the end of the year. n

KEYSOURCE PROVIDES UNISYS LEGACY DATA CENTRE WITH OPTIONS Keysource, the Sussex based company that specialises in the design and build, optimisation and on-going management of data centres, has detailed its participation in a data centre project for the Global IT service, software and technology company Unisys, reported Datacentres.com.

Unisys operates a number of critical, highly secure data centre facilities that deliver a range of colocation and managed services. Keysource was engaged to undertake an audit of the St Just House Data Centre in Milton Keynes to evaluate the opportunities to modernise the facility’s M&E infrastructure and design. The aim was to improve overall efficiency and performance and allow for greater IT capacity, including high density. Operational insights were combined with a technically aligned approach to ensure that all aspects were evaluated against the need to reduce risk; not impact live systems; and the likely investment required to upgrade.

After carrying out a capacity and energy efficiency assessment Keysource identified a series of simple but effective tactical improvements that would provide a moderate increase in efficiency of around 10%-15%.

Overall the Keysource consultancy provided simple and clear recommendations for improved performance which met both the short and long term needs of Unisys.

The comprehensive site survey covered all aspects of the facility including: construction; power (including all plant, and related redundancy, scalability and modularity); cooling (including rack power density, redundancy, humidity control, airflow patterns, and environmental implications); security and protection; and rack deployment (including cabling). It also took into account historical power consumption / metering data for key plant items.

After carrying out a capacity and energy efficiency assessment Keysource identified a series of simple but effective tactical improvements that would provide a moderate increase in efficiency of around 10%-15%.

Keysource also highlighted the potential options for a significant reduction in energy consumption, including UPS system upgrade, cooling infrastructure upgrade and optimisation of the airflow and controls in the data hall. n

IRISH-BASED BUSINESSES SPENT ON AVERAGE €160,000 HOSTING DATA IN THE PAST YEAR

TelecityGroup Ireland, a data centre provider, has announced results of a survey of senior IT decision makers which found that Irish-based businesses spent an average of €160,000 on data hosting solutions in the past 12 months. One in five (19%) said they spent upwards of half a million euro on data hosting in the past 12 months.

The findings show that increasingly, businesses are starting to view Ireland as a data centre hub. They were revealed at the official launch of TelecityGroup Ireland’s new data centre in Blanchardstown, Dublin, which took place last week, reported a Company press release.

Maurice Mortell, vice president of emerging markets and country manager Ireland, TelecityGroup, said: “Ireland’s growing reputation for data centres worldwide is one of the reasons we are announcing the investment of a new state-of-the-art data centre in Blanchardstown, Dublin. The new centre is now officially open and it will provide ten new jobs.

“The results of this survey are extremely interesting and reflective of our experience with customers. Ireland’s physical location and quality of transatlantic connectivity make it one of the fastest through-points for connecting to regions including the UK, US, and Europe.”

The top three reasons for choosing Ireland as a data centre location, according to respondents, were corporation tax (67%); climate, due to the low number of heating and cooling days required (61%); and Ireland’s proximity to Europe (52%).

Other motives included ease of doing business in Ireland (29%) and local workforce talent (28%), while 22% said high speed connectivity to international markets. Interestingly, almost half of respondents said it is the movements of some of the world’s largest internet companies to set up data centre operations here, that have caused them to think of Ireland as a data centre hub.

Additional findings from the survey:

The main reasons given for choosing a particular data centre were guaranteed uptime (60%), increased security (48%) and the ability to expand when needed (46%). Respondents also cited a 24/7 data centre team, reliable connectivity and data protection as key drivers.

The largest proportion of respondents (39%) said their organisation uses an on-premise data hosting solution, rather than a data centre. More than 30% use a split on-premise and a hosted data centre solution, while 29% use a data centre as a data host. 26% said their organisation plans to move to a split hosted data centre and cloud solution within the next two years.

PARIS RESIDENTS UPSET BY “NOISY” INTERXION DATA CENTRELocal residents in Paris are fighting an Interxion data centre because of noise pollution from the site. The residents, in the suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis in the north east of Paris, also argue that the data centre was built in 2012 without sufficient consultation to the local population, Tech Week Europe reported.

A collective called Urbaxion’93, started by disgruntled local residents, is leading the debate and aims to take on data centre provider Interxion.

“We demand the cancellation of the authorisation to operate the data centre on Rateau Street in La Courneuve, due to an irregularity of the public inquiry and shortcomings in the impact study,” said environmental lawyer Roxiane Sageloli.

The data centre is Interxion’s PAR7 4facility, which was opened in November 2012. Interxion has yet to respond to TechWeekEurope’s request for comment. n

DATAVITA TO LAUNCH IN £200 MILLION SCOTTISH DATA CENTREThis week sees the launch of DataVita, a new business which will operate from Fortis, Scotland’s largest and most energy efficient purpose built data centre. Fortis will open at Newhouse, Lanarkshire in May 2016, reported Datacentres.com.

DataVita will offer a range of innovative, agile data centre and cloud services. These will be aimed at private and public sector customers who are looking to store their data securely while reducing the financial and environmental costs.

The £200 million facility is situated just off the M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh. It is Scotland’s first commercial colocation data centre to utilise the latest technology which harnesses Scotland’s cool climate to deliver the highest levels of power efficiency and is powered by 100% renewable energy sources. The 100,000 sq ft, 2000-rack facility is expected to create around 50 high-value skilled jobs over the next five years.

The DataVita fit out programme is under way and the site is available for customer tours from now. DataVita expects to be signing up customers from as early as November 2015.

Gareth Lush, Commercial Director at DataVita said: “Scotland is most definitely ready for a next-generation data centre, and DataVita will put Scotland on the global data centre map. We have a thriving IT industry but we are lacking the data centres to support this fully, resulting in valuable investment and jobs going outside of Scotland. DataVita will offer Scotland’s first “cloud enabled” data centre that will allow customers to easily mix traditional data centre services with the cloud and help our customers meet security and regulatory requirements. Planning permission has been granted for other new data centres in Scotland in the past, but it is important to highlight that Fortis is already a reality – the building is complete, our fit out works are in the final stage, and the latest technology is already in place.

“The Power Usage Effectiveness at Fortis is 1.18, meaning that the average public sector organisation could save around £200,000 annually on energy costs alone by moving away from trying to run inefficient in-house computer rooms to hosting their IT equipment with DataVita – and that’s before you look at other potential savings from space and staff time being freed up.” n

LDC SELLS EASYNET STAKE TO INTEROUTEFollowing the news late last month that Interoute, the European network and a global cloud services provider has entered into an agreement to acquire European managed services provider Easynet, the London team of mid-market private equity firm LDC has confirmed it has exited its minority investment in Easynet following the completion of its acquisition by Interoute, reported a Company press release.

No financial terms were disclosed by LDC but reports suggest an enterprise value of some £403 million was placed upon Easynet.

LDC backed the original buyout of Easynet from BskyB in 2010, working alongside management to build the UK’s leading independent provider of managed networking, hosting and cloud integration services.

It reinvested as part of Equistone Partners Europe’s simultaneous acquisition of Easynet and MDNX Group in 2013, a deal which created the largest independent network and hosting integrator in Europe. n

NETSUITE OPENS IRISH AND DUTCH DATA CENTRES

US software company NetSuite has announced the opening of two major data centre deployments in Europe, one in Amsterdam, Netherlands and the other in Dublin, Ireland. The two data centres will support NetSuite's growth in Europe and meet the needs of the increasing number of European companies that are adopting NetSuite's cloud business management platform to more efficiently manage and transform their businesses. Both data centres are expected to be operational this calendar year, a Company press release reported.

NetSuite's EU data centres will enable companies to store their NetSuite business data physically in the European Union. This is especially significant given that the EU Court of Justice has just declared the EU-US Safe Harbour framework invalid.

NetSuite's new data centres in both Netherlands and Ireland provide high levels of security, extensive connectivity, performance, support services and fully redundant infrastructure. Additionally both data centres are powered by 100% renewable energy.

NetSuite has a strong footprint and presence in Europe, and has an ongoing focus on strategic investments in the region and commitment to businesses across Europe. NetSuite demonstrated the importance of Europe to its growth strategy with the acquisition of UK cloud-based ecommerce pioneer Venda last year. Additionally, NetSuite's OneWorld and SuiteCommerce solutions are ideally suited to power organizations needing to successfully navigate the highly complex multi-currency, multi-language and multi-tax requirements of the European market. By contrast, companies stuck using ageing, disparate and poorly integrated legacy on-premise solutions lack the flexibility a cloud solution like NetSuite offers and instead are struggling to adapt to the ever-changing needs of the European and international business arenas.

In addition to the energy efficiencies NetSuite's multi-tenant technology model delivers, NetSuite is working with leading partners whose data centre operations are powered 100% by renewable energy in Europe.

"Europe represents one of NetSuite's largest growth opportunities," said Zach Nelson, NetSuite CEO. "Our data centres in Amsterdam and Ireland are proof of our continued strong commitment to our European customers. Today's news is a key part of our ongoing plan to bring more resources, focus, and investment to our European customers in the form of additional capacity, security and compliance with local data regulations. NetSuite has always had high standards for compliance and security and the European data centres will adhere to those standards." n

NORTHERN IRELAND DOES BT DATA CENTRE DEALNorthern Ireland’s Finance Minister Arlene Foster has announced plans for two new data centres which will deliver annual savings of around £0.5million for the public sector, reported Datacentres.com.

The data centres will house much of the IT services, not only for the Northern Ireland Civil Service but also the wider public sector.

The Department of Finance and Personnel has awarded the contract for the provision of two secure, high availability data centres to BT. The contract is valued at circa £15million over 10 years. BT will manage the operation of the facilities, including continuity plans. The public sector will continue to manage the IT systems within the facilities.

The Minister said: “The new data centres will offer a much more efficient IT system for the public sector. Replacing a wide range of smaller, less efficient facilities, the centres will produce significant savings on running costs in the region of £0.5 million each year”.

“The new data facilities will also offer high levels of security and operational stability, providing a strong and secure foundation for the IT systems used by Northern Ireland citizens engaging with the public sector.”

Anchor tenants for the new data centres will include Enterprise Shared Services, Translink and the Business Services Organisation.

The Centres will be available for live operation by autumn 2016. n

KEYSOURCE DELIVERS NEW MODULAR DATA CENTRE FOR JAGUAR LAND ROVERKeysource, the data centre and design build specialist, has announced that it has completed the prestigious data centre for Jaguar Land Rover’s new Engine Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton, reported a Company press release.

Due to the use of best in class modular design and Keysource’s expertise, the 1,100 sq ft data centre, which was commissioned in January 2015, has been successfully completed on time and within budget.

Andy Hayes, Director, Keysource explained, ‘Using a modular design means that the bulk of production and preparation can be done off site which reduces costs and saves time. Typically a project of this nature would take at least 12 months to complete but using modular designs reduced this by two thirds. Along with our cooling efficiency design measures, we see this modular approach as a template for future data centres.’t

As planned the core data centre module houses 30 racks with a capacity of 320Kw. It provides critical power through an N+1 UPS system and 2N standby diesel generators. The power module designed and built off-site also offers scalability to support future expansion.

Cooling efficiency has been a key specification for this project and variable speed controlled fans have been positioned so that hot and cold air are separated via the wall rather than under the floor and this has resulted in the desired achievement of PUEL2YC of better than 1.2* n

IRISH DATA CENTRE GROWTH COULD BE BOOM FOR WIND ENERGYNew research by the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA) - undertaken by Callaghan Engineering - has warned that Ireland will have to accelerate electricity generation as over €2billion worth of data centres come on stream here over the next five years, the Irish Independent reported.

Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google and Amazon either already have data centres in the country or are planning to build them. In addition, other firms including Eir, Vodafone, IBM, Ebay, BY and Yahoo already have data centres or are also planning them here, while there are a number of data centre operators also involved in the sector in Ireland.

The IWEA estimate that the new centres could increase Ireland’s energy demand by 18%, and make an EU target for the country to generate 40% of all power from renewable sources by 2020 a more challenging goal. Wind energy is expected to account for 36% percentage points of that 40% target. About 18% of Ireland’s electricity demand was met by wind power last year.

The IWEA claims the surge in data centre construction could lead to a boom for wind energy companies, with multinationals seeking to power their facilities using green energy. The association has predicted that €1.36bn could need to be

invested in Irish renewable energy infrastructure to meet the associated electricity demand.

The report by Callaghan Engineering, which has worked on a number of data centre projects in Ireland. It reckons that data centre power usage in the country currently equates to about 7% of peak winter electricity demand, and 8.6% of demand during summer. n

CenturyLink also was one of the first providers to use NFV technology to virtualize security features such as firewalls and a content delivery network) to distribute video through its Prism TV service, providing quicker delivery of these services. In the coming months, CenturyLink will begin deploying a range of virtualized data and voice infrastructure services, including virtualized MPLS routers and Customer Premises Equipment to enable dynamic delivery of scalable services for customers.

"CenturyLink is taking its network assets and combining them with our expanded NFV platform and cloud services to create a customizable and dynamic applications marketplace infrastructure that will give businesses near real-time provisioning and more control over their service experience," said Aamir Hussain, CenturyLink executive vice president and chief technology officer. "The customer experience is a top priority for CenturyLink. Integrating virtualized services into our network and developing an interactive marketplace and portal for our customers allows us to be more responsive to market opportunities and meet changing customer demands. We are pleased that our efforts position CenturyLink as an industry leader in virtualization."

CenturyLink is actively replacing hardware with software over its recently launched Programmable Services Backbone to quickly deliver new services to enterprises and small and medium businesses through virtualized functions. CenturyLink and Ciena announced in March 2015 that the PSB will be mobilized by Ciena's Blue Planet NFV Orchestrator. The PSB platform will bring SDN and NFV functions to CenturyLink's core and metro networks, and new next-generation CPE, bringing the company's networking, cloud, hosting and IT services into an integrated offering that will be accessed through a portal and set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).

CenturyLink began implementing network virtualization and automation in 2013 when it partnered with five vendors to develop an open environment through common API structures, creating interoperability and enhancing the creation of applications. In February 2014, CenturyLink announced its agreement with Ericsson to deliver a next-generation Operations Support Systems (OSS) and Business Support Systems (BSS) solution through a single, reliable transport infrastructure which can rapidly fulfill customer demands and create the support needed for implementing NFV and SDN services. n

ASIA/PACMICROSOFT SET TO LAUNCH THREE DATA CENTRES IN INDIA US IT giant Microsoft have confirmed previous reports that it will open three data centres in India - two in the west and one in the south, reported the Times of India.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told Prime Minister Narendra Modi at their recent meeting in Silicon Valley that the company will soon announce data centres in India that would focus on offering cloud services.

Bhaskar Pramanik, chairman of Microsoft India, told the Times of India “India is one of the first countries outside the US where we have made such big investments in data centres. It will be one of the largest footprints in terms of data centre capacity in India. It will have the highest levels of security and privacy. In terms of scale, scope and capability, we are going to change the way computing will happen here,” he said some 125 companies have already signed up for trials on these data centres since July when Microsoft opened up the centres for private previews. The public launch is expected over the next few days.

There is a rush to build data centres in India. Amazon told TOI in June that they would establish multiple data centres in the country in 2016 with an investment of many millions of dollars.

For Microsoft, the move is particularly significant because they have traditionally depended on selling proprietary software such as the Windows operating system and the Office suite. With data centres, it will also get to play in the hardware and services segments. “We can now address more than 80% of the $52 billion Indian IT industry (hardware, software and services). With only software, we were playing in a $4 billion market (Microsoft has a 30% share of that),” Pramanik said. n

AUSTRALIAN ORGANISATIONS INCREASINGLY ADOPTING HYBRID ITA new report from CenturyLink reveals that hybrid IT is the architecture of choice for Australian organisations. The Australian Hybrid IT Adoption Index found that 66% of respondents are already using managed services, while more than one-fifth of those remaining plan to used managed services in the next 12 months, reported the Jakarta Post.

A hybrid IT blend of in-house and third-party IT services – such as colocation, managed hosting, managed services, network solutions and/or cloud – can provide powerful and highly responsive infrastructure capabilities, according to Stuart Mills, CenturyLink’s regional director for Australia and New Zealand.

“Successful hybrid IT planning needs to begin with a clear understanding of the organisation’s existing IT capabilities, business objectives and workloads,” Mills said. “The key is to identify which areas are not performing optimally and decide whether the organisation needs to supplement those in-house capabilities with external expertise.”

According to the CenturyLink report, the most popular types of applications being run on outsourced infrastructure are online applications such as websites and e-commerce (48%), applications used for back-office services such as finance and enterprise resource planning (43%) and disaster recovery/business continuity planning solutions (31%).

Security is the main concern for 78% of organisations when looking for data centre colocation and outsourcing due to the increasing number, variety and sophistication of cyber-attacks. A perceived lack of security is also cited as the main barrier to moving infrastructure into a hybrid IT model for 29% of companies.

Survey respondents who are considering a hybrid IT approach are looking for providers that can deliver a full spectrum of security products and services that fit their business and technology needs perfectly. This includes outsourced experts that can act as an internal security team, and the ability to deliver comprehensive protection inside the company’s offices, the data centre (on-premise, outsourced, or third-party) or in the cloud. n
