This insight is almost as old as our planet itself. In the end, even the biggest mam-mut tree grows from a tiny seed. As sim-ple and as natural as this may sound, we have to remind ourselves of it over and over again in our daily routine: it can mo-tivate us to get a project started and it makes us less impatient when the big goal still seems so far away. To quote Laotse: “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” And at Deuter we know a lot about travelling… We have been developing backpacks and bags for 113 years and have equipped numerous mountaineers, climbers and mountainbikers. We love the outdoors and we are aware of our responsibility to protect this beautiful environment for ge-nerations to come.

Of course, this might seem like a pretty overwhelming task. But again we found a motivating quote, this time from US-Ame-rican environmentalist and author Les-ter R. Brown: “Saving civilization is not a spectator sport.” We need to take ac-tion! At Deuter, we have been living sus-tainability with our durable products and our repair service. By becoming a certified partner of Bluesign, we commit ourselves and our production partners in Vietnam

to gradually optimize resource efficiency and sustainability during production. As EOG Association for Conservation mem-ber we have also supported environmen-tal projects since the beginning.

This is the way we want to continue. And we don’t mind taking small steps – after all, our products are often inspired by a small idea. Not in the office, but mainly outdoors, in action or while travelling. And then, one day, the finalised backpack is out there in nature with us.

This year, we have refined our highly po-pular and versatile Compact range and are also introducing new models: for the lovers of cool breezes, the new Compact Air EXP provides airflow from three si-des. The Race and Race X blend intelli-gent function with an athletic design and fresh colours.

We are very much looking forward to ta-king many small steps with you and pre-serve this beautiful planet for future generations!

1 Soft edges to the straps, smaller buckles and narrow tape-red strap ends prevent the SL shoulder straps from chafing under the arms and eliminate pressure points in the chest area.

2 On average, women's backs are not quite as long asmen's. The SL carry system is thus slightly shorter than that of Deuter's stand-ard rucksacks. Conse quently, the models in the SL series are the ideal choice, too, for male users with shorter backs.

3 curving the SL waist belt wings. The fron-tal adjuster system feature of our larger volume rucksacks simplifies the waist belt fitting procedure.

4 To take account of the narrower shoul-der width of the female anatomy, and thus prevent slippage, the SL shoulder straps are both narrower and shorter in length.

5 In order to give a perfect anatomic fit around the upper body, the SL shoulder straps are both narrower and shorter in length.

6 In general, the female waist and hip area is also shaped differently, so in order for the waist belt to deliver a perfect anatomic fit when fastened, it should ideally have a coni-cal shape.

Tall people can enjoy a perfect fit with our Extra Long EL-models! Sports people who are between 1.85 m and 2.00 m tall often have difficulty finding backpacks that fit their longer backs. Our favouri-te Deuter backpack models are available to suit taller people with extended back

lengths by 6-9 cm. Overall, backpacks in the Extra Long (EL) series have also grown in terms of volume. Back systems, features and details remain the same in the EL models as they are in the standard models, however.

2 Two contour-shaped layers of knobbly foam with AirMesh lining and minimal back contact provide maximum airflow.

3 Flexible aluminium stays within the foam profile can be bent to fit the back exactly. (Bike I, Superbike and Trans Alpine).

4 The bilaminate construction made from one soft and one firm layer of foam provides excel-lent carry comfort and optimum load distribu-tion.

Our backpack with “protective” instincts is tweaked for safety and aimed at adren-aline junky mountain bikers. Technically suited to freeriders’ needs, it is the perfect partner for spontaneous journeys off the beaten track with its TÜV/GS certified PSA back system made of visco-elastic SC1 foam. If not needed, you can remove the protector and use the Attack for less challenging bike rides. The pack’s smart solutions easily accommo-date all the equipment and the SL model is specifically designed to fit the anatomy of female riders.tierter Mountainbiker.

1 Deuter’s integrated Shield System features a multi-layer construction which minimises, or even prevents injury occuring during a fall. Mutually complementary foam layers and plates combine to give comfort and maxi-mum safety during a fall. The shock-absorb-ing core component is the viscoelastic SC-1* Foam. SC-1* Foam sets benchmark standards with its progressive shock-absorption func-tion. A slow impact increase leads to the PSA back protector reacting gradually, whereas a rapid impact shock means the protector’s re-sistance increases progressively quicker. The SC1 foam also features a ‘Memory Effect’ – af-ter a deformation it goes back in its original shape and can therefore be used again and again. Two layers of PE offer additional pro-

tection against sharp or pointed objects while soft foam pads guarantee carry comfort.

2 Shoulder straps are contoured.

3 V-Shape protects sensitive back areas (spine and shoulder blades) and also provides great freedom of movement.

4 The spaces between the padding allow for comfortable air circulation.

5 Extra wide, anatomic cut waist fins add flexibility and freedom of movement in any rid-ing position and also ensure the pack sits tight up against the back.

The name says it all! The youngest member of the legendary bike pack dynasty proves it can live up to all the great expectations. The latest coup: we now use a very breathable material for our integrated Windshield – the high visibility, neon yellow rain cover refined with fitted collar, draw cord and zip. Further, the reflective elements really stand out and thus improve road traffic safety. And for each Superbike model you can decide between a strong and a toned-down colour. Women go for the SL model specifically adapted to the female anatomy.

Familie Heckmaier

Heavy fog covers the peak of the Duran-na pass at 2100 m. The beautiful land-scape hides behind the clouds. Drizz-le. The bike computer on the handle bar says 6° Celcius. The group has left Oberstdorf two days ago and it will take them three more days to reach their goal at the Lago di Como. This is supposed to be a joyous mountainbike trip? For kids?

”Yes“, says Michl Heckmair. He is a pas-sionate mountainbike guide and has a bike shop in his home town of Oberst-dorf. Twice he has crossed the Alps with his wife Ulla and their daughters – the first time, the younger daughter Lea was nine and Hannah twelve years old. Yet, Heckmair points out one thing: such a tour, crossing the alps on your bike, is not about satisfying the parents’ ambi-tions – it has to be a joyride for everybo-dy. “The basis is to introduce your child-ren to alpine sports over the years, step by step“, he says. His daughters learned how to handle physical challenges as well as bad weather on nurmerous hut trips and easy climbs. “They know that there is no helicopter coming to pick us up when we are fed up,“ Heckmair ex-plains. “Of course, we all have our ups

and downs – I do as well. Yet, all in all, over the years the girls have developed the right mindset to master such a tour.“ It is still a great challenge, of course. The art is to find the right balance: do not challenge the kids too much, but also do not to underestimate them. “And it is re-ally important to give them a clear goal!“

So in 2009, the family decided: “We will ride to Italy on our bikes. Every sin-gle meter. And we will put all we need in our backpacks.“ This means: reduce your luggage to a minimum. “My Deu-ter Trans Alpine weighed in at six kilos“, Heckmair remembers. “The girls’ back-packs were even lighter – but we had all the essentials with us. It is different when it comes to carrying the bike: you have to help a nine year old. Lea couldn’t carry hers, merely because of the size of the bike.“ The first tour took the fami-ly four days, about 290 kilometers and 4000 altitude meters. From their home town Oberstdorf via the infamous Schr-ofen pass at the Arlberg, through the Verwall valley to Ischgl, Samnaun, the Engadin and finally via the Vinschgau to Meran in South Tyrol. The kids were rewarded with a huge ice cream bowl

An adventurous family tradition –

For small Lea, carrying the bike is a physical chal-lenge – the passages should therefore not be too long! The family is thankful that they only have to carry the bikes up the final 200 altitude meters of the Gerlachsattel.

Descent from the Duranna pass – and finally: the view! Before everything was covered in fog.

Together we are strong! The Heckmair family after the ride down the Duranna pass.

– and they paid the parents a wonderful compliment. “The girls said they liked the tour even more than our holidays in the USA, because we shared so many experi-ences“, Michl Heckmair tells proudly.

So they did it again: The following year they started on a five day route with 380 kilometers and 7000 altitude meters: via the Kleinwalsertal, the Faschinajoch to Bludenz, Tschagguns and Klosters, then further on to Arosa, Lenzerheide and Bi-vio, and finally over the Septimer pass to Chiavenna and the Lago di Como. But it was a rainy summer in 2010 and the Heckmair family struggled with the wea-ther. “Rain and cold wear you down – it was a lot more strenuous than our first tour“, the bike guide remembers. It was hard to keep up the morals and the moti-vation – for example at the Duranna pass. Yet, on the other hand, there were deeply emotional highs: there was a moment

when the fog opened up at the Hörnlihüt-te and the four riders all of a sudden had a view of the breathtaking scenery. Or the Mediterranean feeling on the ride at the Bergell at Piz Badile.

After this bad weather challenge the fa-ther now even thinks that his girls are ready for the “original route“ - meaning the route that his father Andi, known as the inventor of the trans alp, biked for the first time in 1990: from Oberstdorf to the Lake Garda. Bike adventures – for the Heckmairs a true family tradition!

Truly deserved break on a rock polished by the glacier in the Verwall valley. Mmmmh – the food of the Alps: Kaiserschmarrn and Almdudler! Lea’s favourite. The family is sure that she could win any Kaiserschmarrn eating competition...

Italy! Another 54 kilometers from the border to the finish line in Meran. Lea is happy: “Great. Then we will have more than 100 k today!” Despite the strong wind she enjoys the final stage through the Vinschgau.

We take our small steps to save our en-

vironment mainly on a local level – but

we’re also very much interested in what

is happening in the big wide world.

Therefore, we approached some of our

distributors and asked them about the

environmental situation in their home

countries – and we learned about their

own little contributions to environ-

mental protection. One thing is for sure: there is a lot happening on

a local level globally!

“There are plenty of environmental is-sues in Bulgaria: overconstruction in nature protected areas; destruction of landscapes; loss of biodiversity; spoilt water sources; illegal cutting in the forests; usage of pesticides and other harmful chemical compounds within the soils area etc. But on the other hand, there is a growing environmental aware-ness and more and more people join to act against destruction and enhance sustainability. In a country like Bulgaria in particu-lar, we depend on the politics of small steps! At the office we separate the trash, re-use lots of stuff, save energy and we bike to work. We all love nature and the outdoors and we think it’s our responsibility to tell people about the problems as well as about the opportu-nities for a change.

We support various projects – not on-ly by donating money, but by volunteer work. It’s a great feeling to get into the wilderness with a group of like-minded people and literally work on preserving nature. This involves cleaning actions as well as a project where we build on a sustainable and energy sufficient moun-tain lodge with 47 beds in the Central Balkan National Park. We use solar pan-els, managed to install WiFi, and even constructed a solar composting toilet – which is quite an experiment at this el-evation…” (For more information www.ehoto.org)

“Being surrounded by water, our key en-vironmental concerns here in Sweden, I would say, are related to the protection of water resources. For the Baltic Sea, for example, one of the central issues is eutrophication, the excessive concentra-tion of nutrients in the ecosystem as a result of human activity. There are quite

a few projects dedicated to the protec-tion of the Baltic Sea. Naturskyddsföre-ningen (The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation) and The World Wide Fund (WWF) are just two of the organizations that have started important projects on this subject. Both the sea eagle and the grey seals were almost exterminated in the 1970s. They were saved, however, because pressure from the people and organizations led to political actions and the banning of certain toxic substances. We cannot act on all fronts, but we truly believe that we all can take action and do something! For us that means that we buy organic food and MSC-certified fish products, we try to use the car less often, only use environmentally friendly detergents, recycle waste and we sup-port projects we believe in. We also hope that each of us can inspire people to do likewise.”

“More and more people pay attention to environmental as well as safety issues in Taiwan. The interest is particularly strong when it comes to water and soil pollu-tion, as well as water and energy short-age. There is a growing popularity of or-ganic food and people look more into health safety. It is great to see this in-creasing awareness for a green, sustain-able economy, carbon reduction and waste recycling.

For us in ATUNAS, developing environ-ment-friendly, long-lasting products, and promoting LNT (Leave no Trace) concepts are the essential ways to show our care and respect for Mother Nature. LNT is a program designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts in their plans of minimizing their ecological footprint when they are out in nature biking, paddling, hiking etc. It is an educational and ethical pro-gram, not a set of rules or regulations… Also, this year is the centennial anniver-sary of Taiwan, and ATUNAS continues its initiatives on climbing mountains here in our neighborhood (100 little moun-tains). Along the ways, we have inte-grated points where people are educat-ed about LNT with games and can read about the ideas on boards etc. Outdoors is where we learn and understand our surrounding environment.”

“One of the primary environmental prob-lem in the US stems from air pollution is-sues. Our air quality is challenged as a re-sult of our dependency on oil, a lack of infrastructure for quality public transpor-tation and places where American’s work that is far from where people live. Plus: we continue to be very wasteful when it comes to the use of our resources. Our landfills are filled will so many things that could have been recycled, refurbished or reused. Our politics are angled such that it’s going to take a major shift to decrease our dependency on fossil fuels. Yet, there are small positive changes! I have been pleasantly surprised at what my kids have learned in elementary school regarding environmental education. This is a good start for planting the seeds of right atti-tude towards our environment. At the company, we also work on little things like office window tinting and im-proved ceiling insulation for more efficient heating and cooling; recycling waste, im-proving order/logistic planning to maxi-mize efficient shipment of goods and when applicable we reuse carton boxes that we receive for our shipments to our dealers. Also, we have a local repair shop

fix damaged backpacks so they can con-tinue to be used. We are further support-ing agencies and non-profit organizations that work on behalf of the National Parks and Wilderness Areas. On a personal level, we do volunteering work, which is always a fantastic experience and great fun. We are, for example, part of the vol-unteer-driven Boulder Mountainbike Al-liance which has the mission to improve the trail experience for every rider in Boul-der County. Together we built new trails, assist and educate bikers – and enjoy the beautiful rides!” (For more info see http://bouldermountainbike.org/content/trail-building)

Not just so that your „Deuter” will really get through the thick and thin with it's high quality fabrics, but also, so the creative com-bination of the right fabrics on the pack will optimise performance and reduce weight. Deuter uses only selected backpack fabrics that are rip- and abrasion-proof, colourfast, UV-resistant, quick drying, water resistant, long lasting and lightweight. The two im-portant synthetic materials are nylon (polya-mide) and polyester. High density polyamide fabric is extremely abrasion resistant in a thin layer and is more robust than polyester. It is popular due to its high performance in a light weight layer. Polyester doesn't absorb water, and doesn’t bleach when exposed to UV rays. Most importantly, the rugged polyester fabric has a typical soft touch yet is not heavy be-cause polyester fibres are lighter. The fabrics are specified by their thread thickness in de-nier (den), which is the thread weight spec-ified over a thread length of 9,000 metres. This means that a 9,000 metre long 600 den thread, for example, would weigh 600 grams. To provide high water resistance, Deuter fab-rics are coated exclusively with polyurethane (PU) which is abrasion-proof, cold-resistant and flexible.

YKK® zippers: currently the best available on the market, these top quality zippers are very robust and reliable.

Deuter-Duratex: A Polyamide-fabric that is extremely abrasion and tear resistant. For all larger backpacks this is

used for the bottom panel. It has a thread of 1000 den and a thick PU coating on the in-side.

Deuter-Duratex-Lite: Robust and durable Dura-tex in a 500 denier wea-ve. Markedly lighter than the 1000 weight version

yet still durable, tear-proof and robust. PU coated.

Deuter-Ballistic: High density woven poly-amide 420 denier fabric with high strength and lightweight makes it es-

pecially suitable for Trans Alpine and Aircon-tact packs. PU coating. Shiny finish.

Deuter-Ripstop-Nylon: The regular chain-and-weft weaving of stronger threads creates a strong, but light 420 den nylon

fabric with good abrasion and rip stopping characteristics. The outside is water-repel-lent, the inside is PU coated.

Deuter-Microrip-Nylon: 210 den Nylon fabric with strong ripstop threads and PU coating. This fine, lightweight and yet abra-

sion resistant nylon is optimal for lightweight backpack construction.

Deuter Microrip Lite: This very fine Nylon fabric is extremely lightweight. The PU coating and tight weave enable it to achie-

ve a high waterproof specification. Similar to our other lightweight textiles, the stronger ripstop threads reinforce the lighter main fab-ric in order to increase its resistance to tearing. Used for our “Bike Bags” and Accessories.

Taffeta Carbonite: Comparable to the 190 “Deuter-Taffeta-Nylon”. Taffeta Carbonite howe-ver, is highly waterproof

due to the special carbonite PU coating. This together with it’s Ripstop weave for increa-sed tear resistance, makes it ideal for our wa-terproof accessories.

3D-Air-Mesh: A 3 mm thick and therefo-re three dimensional poly-ester mesh. The optimum air permeability and pad-

ding effect turns it to the ideal lining fabric for back padding, shoulder straps and hip belts. It offers maximum durability and comfort.

Wide Air-Mesh: Larger holed skin contact fabric with excellent breathability and lighter weight. This polyester fa-

bric combines durability with comfort.

Deuter-Ripstop-Polytex: The sturdier version of the Deuter Super Polytex with woven in stronger threads. PU coated.

Deuter-Super-Polytex: Made from 600 den Poly-ester thread and with a thick PU coating, this multi-purpose fabric is

robust and lightweight. It is most suitable for backpacks, used in average conditions to keep the weight to a minimum.

Deuter-Taffeta-Nylon: It is a fine weave of 190 den threads for the Deu-ter rain covers. It is light with small packing di-

mensions. The PU coating grants excellent water-resistance.

Neoprene: Neoprene is a elastomer foam usually laminated on both sides to Nylon or Lycra to protect the sur-

face and increase durability. We use Neoprene for hip belts that need to be flat, extremely flexible and robust. The protective features make it the ideal material for our Neon Belt and the Camera Cases. And we use its insula-tion qualities for our Tube Insulator.

As a leading manufacturer of backpacks, Deuter has al ways cooperated with ex perienced mountain clim bers. The co-operation with the profes-sional mountain eers of the German Alpine and Ski Guides Association and the American Mountain Guides Association has proven invaluable and highly successful over the years. As indepen dent technical advisors, they give us their worldwide ex pe ri ence and knowledge to fur ther impro-ve our products.

Deuter-Ripstop 210: Ultra-tight weave, hard wearing 210 Denier Ny-lon. Recognisable by the very technical, shiny sur-

face incorporating tough Ripstop threads. This light-weight and extremely robust fabric is perfectly suited to the manufacture of lightweight products. Top quality PU coa-ting. This highly technical material is used for lightweight Alpine and Trekking models.
