This afternoon we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of COLNEY HEATH FC for this Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division fixture. We also welcome our three match officials and hope that you all enjoy your short stay with us. It’s been almost a month since our last home game – a 3-1 win over Hoddesdon Town. In the past month we have picked up 10 points from 12 and are now in a mid table spot. A 2-2 draw in our local Xmas derby at Stotfold was a disappointing result as we should have sealed the game by the interval but three points gained at Berkhamsted last Saturday was an excellent achievement and we hope will set us up for a good run of results. That starts today with the visit of Colney Heath who are a place above us, level on points but with the better goal difference. Both of us, however, are conscious of the fact that sides around us have games in hand so three points are crucial for both sides even at this stage of the season. We should therefore be in for an interesting encounter. The Magpies come to United on the back of a 1-0 home win against Tring Athletic but two defeats against Sun Sports and Hoddesdon Town prior to that. Back in September the two sides met in the League and Colney took the honours with a 2-1 win. Our goalscorer was Jack Boyd who currently sits at the top of the SML leading goal scorers with 18 league goals. Our Director of Football, Guillem Balague, has been very busy over the Xmas period including receiving the plaudits for his documentary “The Making of Ronaldo” which has been shown on Sky Sports 1. It is a highly recommended watch. In the next few weeks we will also be announcing the signing of a former Chelsea and Spanish International. We are in the process of completing the paperwork, including International Clearance – so watch this space. Guillem continues to take his Biggleswade United shirt with him wherever he goes and his current clutch of players and dignitaries

Welcome to Second MeadowGood afternoon and welcome to Second Meadow.

Guillem continues to take his Biggleswade United shirt with him wherever he goes and his current clutch of players and dignitaries photographed with our shirt include Enrique De Lucas, Ronald De Boer and Luis Garcia.

Our next fixture is a trip to Hertford Town on Tuesday night. Kick Off 7.45pm. This will be followed by a trip to Tring Athletic next Saturday.

The Development Side have made the long journey to Hartley Wintney today but return home next Saturday with a home fixture against North Greenford United FC. Kick Off 3pm.

Let’s hope for an enjoyable and exciting game this afternoon.

CURRENT LEAGUE TABLE THE HISTORY OF BIGGLESWADE UNITED (2)

The next eleven years saw the first team led by Steve "Snowy" Wright and under his management the club continued to enjoy a very high level of League and Cup success ultimately achieving promotion to the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and with it the opportunity to compete in the FA Cup. And under Snowy the club made three Beds FA Senior Challenge Cup final appearances, winning two of the three with victories over Stotfold (4-1) and Leighton Town (1-0) but missed out in 2006/07 going down 2-0 to Dunstable Town. Snowy's other cup successes came in the form of the Hunts Premeir Cup, North Beds Charity Cup, Hinchingbrooke Cup, the SML Division One Cup and the SML Special Achievement Award once again. The end of the 2006 2007 season saw Snowy step down as manager with his assistant, Nick Burton taking over the first team reins. The 2006 2007 season marked a crucial time in the club's history with the formation of a youth structure that sees Biggleswade girls and boys aged 7 to 18 able to be part of Biggleswade United. We now have twelve youth teams including three girls teams with a well established youth committee. The profile of the club as a community club is very much boosted by the association with such a well organised and well structured youth set up. January 5th 2009 saw the club embark on further ambitious ground improvements. With financial backing from Biggleswade Town Council, Mid Beds District Council and the Football Foundation we installed a 260-seater stand, fully enclosed the ground with a double turnstile entrance and players' secure walkway which raised the ground to Grade E status.

After several years of stability in terms of first team managers the next six years saw a regular turnover of first team and reserve team managers with Nick Burton, Dave Elkin and Phil Childs all taking over the first team reins for a time.

At the start of the 2013 2014 season we appointed Mick Reardon and Mark Royal as first team managers both of whom have enjoyed success as coaches at the higher levels of football. Their disciplined approach was quickly adhered to and responded to by the players. The new 2014 – 2015 season has seen the arrival of several new young players to the club following the club’s positive decision to introduce a side that will compete in the Suburban League as well as continuing to compete in the SML Premier Division. The Suburban side will be managed by Gary Burkett who enjoyed success with Shefford Saints Under 18s and many talented young players will be part of the United Squad. Gary will be assisted by former Bushey Met Police manager, Tony Jones. In November 2014 the club took a further positive step to realise our ambitions with the appointment of Sky Sports Presenter and renowned author, Guillem Balague as Biggleswade United’s Director of Football.

The club has certainly come a long way in relatively few years but we could not have done it without the help of a very supportive Town and District Council who clearly understand the benefits of having a community based club in Biggleswade. Our success is also very much down to a very hard working committee who throughout the year - not just the football season - continue to volunteer their time and commitment to the club, to help it continue to thrive and be a source of enjoyment for our supporters and the Biggleswade community.

BIGGLESWADE UNITED : OUR HISTORY SO FAR

Biggleswade United Football Club was re-formed on the 16th July 1959. However, local history records indicate that there was a Biggleswade United side playing at

Second Meadow as early as 1929. Our first season (1959/60) saw us competing in

Division Three of the North Herts. League (NHL). After 10 successful years in the NHL the club made the step up to South Midlands League (SML) football. But towards the end of a 15-year association with the SML the club began to struggle and after three years of finishing in the bottom three of Division One we sought fresh fields. The club joined the Herts. Senior but club continued to find the going tough. In 1986 we elected to return to local League football, joining the Bedford and District Football League and began to build again. The appointment of Brian Swords as first team manager in 87/88 proved to be the turning point in the club's fortunes. During the next ten years the club achieved a tremendous amount of success on and off the football pitch. Our record of League and Cup honours speak for themselves but aligned to this a great deal of work went on behind the scenes to match the on-field success. The club now boasts one of the best clubhouse and ground facilities in the Mid-Bedfordshire area. The success of the club has also attracted many new players as well as commanding a great deal of loyalty from those players who helped the club progress from Division Three of the Bedford and District League to County Senior Club status in just 15 years. The 1995/96 season was the most successful in the club's history - winning five major honours; the Beds Intermediate County Cup, Bedford and District League Championship, League Cup Championship and as the League's representatives the club won the Beds. FA Centenary Cup. Having won every major Bedford League honour the club felt it was time to move on and made the decision to make the step up once again and returned to Division One of the SML. In an exceptionally successful first season we celebrated a Division One "double" by winning the Championship and the Division One Cup. We also retained the Beds. FA Intermediate County Cup, only the second club in the competition's history to achieve this feat. To crown our success the club were awarded the SML Special Achievement Trophy in July 1997. In the season 1997/98 we finally achieved Senior status. This was achieved not only through the endeavours of the players on the field but ultimately as a result of an extremely hard working committee. With the help of the Biggleswade Town Council a new stand was erected and perimeter fencing installed. And two seasons later the club erected floodlights and on the evening of 26th October 1999 we played our first-ever floodlit game at Second Meadow, Ryman League side Leighton Town were the visitors in the Bedfordshire Premier Cup.

BERKHAMSTED 2 BIGGLESWADE UNITED 3COLNEY HEATH – PAST AND PRESENT

United started the final third of the season’s campaign with an excellent 2-3 win at Berkhamsted’s Broadwater ground and with it completed the double over the team that were labelled as title contenders at the start of the season. The opening ten minutes saw Mick Reardon’s side boss proceedings with Reynaldo Carbon (pictured) and Sam Nair going close but it was the League’s leading goal scorer, Jack Boyd, who gave United the lead in the 12th minute. A defensive mix up saw Boyd gifted the ball and with just the keeper to beat he tapped the ball home for 1-0.

But United’s lead was short-lived. Defender Adam Randall tried to play the ball out from the back but was robbed of the ball by Berko’s Adiel Mannion who had no trouble in sliding the ball across to Josh Chamberlain for another simple tap in.

United came back strongly and continued to dominate play, soaking up Berko’s route one football and presenting the United front men with several golden opportunities. Subsequently it came asno shock when United extended their lead in the 18th minute. An outstanding “play advantage” decision from match referee, Ryan Hillier-Smith, saw Will Wright split open the Berko back line despite a crunching tackle on Boyd on the half way line. Wright’s pass found Nair wide on the right and United’s “pocket rocket” cut inside and drilled the ball past keeper Carl Tasker from the edge of the Berko area.

On the stroke of 30 minutes United made it 3-1. James Chisholm broke up play in the middle of the park and slipped the ball through to Carbon who stepped on the accelerator pedal and raced in to Berko box. But at the crucial point it appeared that Carbon had pushed the ball too far in front of him to be a danger but home defender Ed Canham made enough contact for the referee to award a penalty as Carbon tumbled over. Boyd sent Tasker the wrong way to leave Berko a mountain to climb.

United could have signed, sealed and delivered that points in the final minutes of the half. Full back, Jake O’Neill, had run from deep into the Berko half and pulled the ball back to Boyd in the penalty area. Many expected Boyd to pull the trigger for his hat trick but instead he saw Nair unmarked with Carbon as back up. Squaring the ball across the six yard area both Nair and Carbon mis-timed their strikes and watched unbelievingly as the ball skipped away for a goal kick.

As was to be expected, the home side made changes to their line up at the interval and it paid off. They took the game to United and Chamberlain and substitutes, Ryan Laville and Max Farelly had chances to reduce the arrears in the early exchanges. But it took until the 75th minute for the hosts to find their way through a resilient United back line. Laville was allowed to cut through the United midfield unchecked and powered his strike past Grant Beckwith to throw his team mates a life line. However, their guests had other ideas and a shuffle in the ranks saw Jude Eboji move from a left back slot to his more familiar front man role and he almost made it 4-2 but for an excellent save from Tasker. United substitutes Josiah Hunte, Tre Grant and Chinua Cole gave United the fresh legs that were needed to see out the game and for the final ten minutes United regained the upper hand and could have added to their tally but in the end six points from a strong outfit like Berko is a real bonus.

The “Magpies” were founded in 1907 and played their early football in the Hatfield District League and, after the 1st World War, joined the Mid Herts League, where the 3rd team played until recently. Earlier records indicate the winning of a Harcourt Cup but in is believed that this was Junior football some 18 month earlier, 1905-6.Success was a long time coming - 1935-36, and was disrupted by the 2nd World War. The golden era of football came from 1946 through to 1960 when the club won the Mid Herts Benevolent Shield twice, the Bingham Cox Cup, Division 1 and Premier Division titles. In 1952 the switch was made from Fuzzen Field to the Recreation Ground and into the Herts County League. Success continued with two Playing Fields Cups, the Aubrey Cup twice, Division 2, Division 1 and Premier titles. This culminated over the Easter weekend in 1960 with the Herts Intermediate Cup and Aubrey Cup double. The Reserve side also completed a double in 1958 winning both Cup and League. Odd trophies were picked up in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s but these were pretty barren years on the field. Off the field, however, the club fought for permission to use its old clubhouse. This was secured with leases still running today, but in August 1988 while modernising the building, the club burnt down. Without a clubhouse, the Magpies, playing from a Portacabin, gained entry to the Premier Division. A new clubhouse was built in 1989 and an extension added in 1993, along with post and rails. Floodlights were erected in February2000.The wish to play South Midlands football eluded the club with 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 4th finishes from 1994 - 1998, when second place would have been enough. Centenary Trophies back to back and another Aubrey Cup were won but the Herts County title only came in 1999/2000, when coming from 15 points behind in January to win by 10 points from rivals, Wormley. The club’s ambition was to gain Premier Division status and with it FA Cup entry. Finishes of 5th 3rd 5th 6th and 5th were not enough in the initial seasons, despite numerous semi-final appearances and consecutive Charity Cup successes in seasons.(2001/2 and 2002/3) The South Midland Reserve Challenge trophy was collected in 2004/5.The First Division title eventually came in 2005/6. With this came the Premier Division and the FA Cup. We are now in our 7th season and steadily improving picking up the Premier Division Cup in 2010/11 with a 2-0 win against Leverstock Green. Last years FA Vase run saw us to a 3rd round replay which we hope can be bettered this year. Our main aim is promotion along with the continuing of ground improvements to the fore and the allure of Step 4 football.
