THE BULLETIN OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF Biggleswade IVEL

R.I.B.I. DISTRICT 1260

Presidential reflections on what has passed and looking forward to what is on the horizon

It has been an interesting couple of months with every committee committed to bring a variety of social,

community and fundraising events to the club’s calendar. I have just picked out a few of the highlights for me.

It was a real treat to see how well Katelyn Johnson, our RYLA candidate, was doing when I visited her at Grafham

Water Centre at the beginning of her course. I am delighted that she will be speaking to us about her adventure

on October 12th.

In July our club, once again, helped Kimbolton Rotary Club with the car parking at the Kimbolton Fayre. We all

enjoy this task very much and meeting up with friends from other Rotary clubs is always a bonus. This year non

Rotarians Angela and Andrew Fenn helped too and I think I am correct in saying Andrew enjoyed the vintage cars

as much as Angela enjoyed the variety of dogs inside them.

We will be helping with another community project, the car parking at Old Warden Vineyard, on September 11th . More information at http://www.wardenvineyard.org.uk/ A big thank you goes to my husband Andrew and the members of Ickwell Crib Club who were such splendid

coaches at our recent crib night attended by guests and members of our own and other clubs. This gave the

additional benefits of raising the profile of both the Rotary clubs and Crib groups in the area. Amongst those

who attended, Brookmans Park Rotary Club were by far the superior players! Mike Thorpe of Brookmans Park

and Colin shared the shield for winning by the highest margin. I look forward to a follow up and future events of

this nature.

Thank you also to Liz and the Community team for the Porky Quiz evening—see report.

The Crocus planting project for the Purple4Polio campaign later in the year is more than exciting and the

benefits to mankind enormous. I urge everyone to check this activity out and it is another event I look forward to

seeing the community enjoy.

Finally, if you look back to my entry in the Bridge of March 2016 (where I wrote about Major Tim Peake hanging

a Rotary banner in the window of his space craft as he orbited the Earth) As you know I am a science teacher in

Bletchley, so you will understand why I am so excited about who our Speaker for our 16th Charter Dinner on the

21st September. We are delighted to have Professor Andrew Norton from the Open University who is both an

academic and an enthusiast for Dr Who and Back to the Future. He will be talking to us on “Exoplanets and how

to find them” If you do not know what they are I am sure you will be enlightened and entertained by his talk. His

website is http://www.theadstockscienceclub.co.uk/files/Prof-Andrew-Norton.pdf. He can also be followed on

twitter. https://twitter.com/ajnorton3?lang=en-gb , watched talking about solar eclipse on Youtube https://

We spent a very enjoyable evening at Common

Farm Langford thanks to Patricia and John . The

food was delicious, the company very pleasant

and the garden looked beautiful. It did, however,

get a little chilly during the evening. After a few

attempts John discovered that firelighters are

better than paper and we were soon able to keep

warm around the chimenea!

Community and Vocational Team News

Porky Quiz

As you can see from the score sheet below, the final result of the Porky Quiz on Saturday

13th August was very close. Colin’s questions were somewhat obscure

and any amount of pre quiz Googling would have proved fruitless. A big

thank you to Colin for organising such a varied and entertaining quiz so

well. We were delighted to welcome members from the Rotary Clubs of

Hitchin Tilehouse and Biggleswade and a team of crib players who had shared our crib

evening with us the previous week. The evening was enjoyed by a good number of club

members and their guests and the community and vocational team would like to thank

everyone who gave raffle prizes, desserts, and donations which added up to a most

enjoyable and profitable evening.

Kingfisher Way

Plans are well in hand for

going ahead with the survey

of the Kingfisher Way. We are

grateful for any help with

walking the pathway or with

lifts to and from the start and

finish of each walk. Keep an

eye on your emails and the

club folder for further

instructions. Mike Fayers, our speaker from the Bedfordshire Rural Charities Council on 7th

September, will be giving us advice on completing the survey forms.

International & Foundation Team report

Our club, in partnership with Jordans Mill, is helping to rid the world of polio by supporting the nationwide initiative, Purple4Polio. There have been just 21 cases of polio recorded this year compared with the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day. We are now so close to finishing the job with only two remaining countries where polio is still endemic; Pakistan and Afghanistan. That is why the Purple4Polio campaign is so important to raise awareness and funds. On Sunday 16th October, along with the Jordans Mill gardening team, we will invite the general public to help plant 2,000 purple crocus corms in the beautiful grounds of the Mill. The colour purple has been chosen as it represents the colour of the dye which is placed on the little finger of a child on mass immunisation days when literally millions of children in entire countries are protected against the disease. The nationwide campaign to encourage everyone to join together in the final push to eradicate polio worldwide, which was launched by RIBI, is being supported by legendary singer-songwriter Donovan, a polio survivor himself, and TV Presenter Konnie Huq who has taken part in an immunisation day in India, From the 7th October for 2 weeks Jordans Mill will host a display about Rotary’s fight against polio. On Sunday 16th between 10:00 and 16:00hrs the general public is invited to come along to plant crocus corms, take part in a polio bear teddy trail and help raise funds for the campaign. Crocus corms will be provided along with the necessary planting tools. Donations will go to the Purple4Polio campaign. Your help will be needed!

The Wheelchair Challenge

The annual Wheelchair Challenge is the brainchild of London 2012 Bedford

Training Camp manager, Howard Darbon. With almost 200 Paralympic

athletes and officials based in Bedford for their pre-Games training, it was

evident how much sport assisted the personal development and confidence

of the athletes. As ‘legacy’ featured highly in the successful London bid, the

concept of the Challenge was born. With the organisation and enthusiastic

support from local Rotary Clubs, many of whose members were active

volunteers during London 2012, the event has gone from strength to

strength.

The Event

The Wheelchair Challenge event will take place on Sunday 9th October at

the International Athletic Stadium in Barkers Lane, Bedford. MK41 9SB.

Lightweight sports wheelchairs are provided by WheelPower. Relay races

are divided into categories and will be timed over the 4 x 50m. Individual

team members may be able bodied or disabled, each completing a 50 metre

length of the track. Finals will be held for each category. An individual 400

metre race has proved very popular in the past and is open to all ages.

Registration opens at 10.00am with the first race at 10.30am.

What we have achieved

Since the inaugural event in October 2012, over £22,000 has been raised to support the development of sport for disabled

people. We have raised money for WheelPower, Whizz-Kidz, Sport Bedford and Herts Sport & Wellbeing which are all

organisations that support disabled people to be active. Last year grants were awarded to three Bedford athletes to allow

them to progress in their sports.

How Charities can get involved

This is also an ideal opportunity for charities to raise funds for their own cause through sponsorship. All we ask is an entry fee

of £25.00 which will benefit sport for the disabled through our chosen charities of WheelPower, Whizz-Kidz, Sport Bedford

and Herts Sport & Wellbeing. In addition they may advertise their own charity at the event.

How you can get involved

Get a team together and take part in the 4 x 50m relay or have a go at the 400m individual race

Let us have the names of potential teams or team members from groups, work places or charities

Sponsor one of the prizes

Don’t forget to listen to the Rotary slot on Biggles FM on the 2nd Wednesday

of the month at 8.30am http://www.bigglesfm.com/listen.htm

Our Webmaster, Rotarian Roy, is not only a keen Rotarian but also a very keen racing cyclist riding for the Team SalesEngine racing team.

Having at the end of May passed what he calls “a significant birthday milestone” he took part on 4th June in what was billed as “the world’s largest cycling time trial” which was held on a 16.9 mile closed road circuit starting at the Peterborough show ground.

This event involved 820 riders starting at 20 second intervals and riding as hard as they can for the challenging country road circuit. Roy says that what helped make this race so enjoyable was knowing that there were no motor vehicles overtaking the riders, turning out of side roads in front of the riders or heading towards them!

The race was a qualifying event for the UCI Masters world championships in Australia later this year, with the first three riders in each age group having the opportunity to compete in these championships.

Roy just missed out by finishing 5th in what he calls the “most mature category” which, by the way, meant that there were just over 800 riders in the event who were younger than him! In the end he finished just over half-way through the field beating many riders who he pointed out are a third of his age!
