I t has been a wet summer, but with the arrival of fall, rain patterns should begin to mod-

erate resulting in dryer conditions for landscapes and turf. In addi-tion to less rain, temperatures will cool and days will shorten as we move deeper into the fall months. As plants approach dormancy, or at least a slower period of growth, occasional irrigation may be needed to amend dry conditions. Early fall is a good time to test irri-gation systems to insure no water is wasted as we prepare for winter.

As one considers irrigation an important goal is application of the right amount of water. Perhaps the way to think about this is to estab-lish a goal of only applying the amount of water needed to main-tain healthy plants. During winter established trees and shrubs prob-ably won’t need any supplemental water. Flowering annuals and turf may need occasional irrigation depending on the type of plant, temperatures and the amount of rainfall received. Landscape and turf managers and those who have home lawns and landscapes should inspect plants weekly during the dormant season to determine if an irrigation cycle is needed. Always check the weather forecast before running irrigation to determine if rain is imminent.

While temperatures are still warm a day spent checking the condition of the irrigation system and adjusting as needed will result in water savings and lower water bills for municipal users. Problems commonly encountered in system checks include clogged sprinklers, leaking sprinklers and valves, obstructed sprinklers, overspray onto sidewalks and buildings and pipe leaks or breaks. Let’s consider each of these briefly.

Sprinklers become clogged over time by sand and debris that has

become trapped in the filter or nozzle of the sprinkler significantlyreducing flow. Sprinkler systems may be spray type or rotor. If cor-recting a spray system, with the water off, raise and gently secure the pop-up with a soft surfaced clamping device. Unscrew the top part of the spray head, remove the filter and rinse it thoroughly. Prior to reassembly, flush the irrigation line to ensure no other debris is in the system. If correcting a rotor system, unscrew the top portion of the rotor and remove internal parts to find a small basket-shaped filter at the bottom of the rotor body. Remove and rinse the filter, flush the line prior to replacement and reassemble the system. Turn the irrigation on and adjust the cover-age pattern if needed.

Leaks in sprinkler heads occur when seals become worn or as a result of damage that occurred during the summer mowing season. Leaks may be visible or may be suspected due to pressure loss. If leaks are suspected but not readily apparent, begin by check-ing seals in the sprinkler body and if not this, work backwards along the line, beginning at the sprinkler head. Dig carefully around the head, particularly if sensor wiring is located in the same trench, and examine the condition of the rotor connection to the delivery pipe. Consider attaching a spare sprin-kler head and operate the system

Preparing irrigation for the dry season

By Lindsey M. RobertsSpecial to The Washington Post

Iantha Carley and her husband raised her two kids, now grown, in a small house. This meant that the living room was also the home theater, game room, library and meeting space.

"We all had to decide whether to watch the same show or go read a book," Carley says. The Silver Spring, Maryland, inte-rior designer finds that her clients have a similar situation; often, there's no basement to watch movies in, no room to relegate kids' toys to.

The living room — once decorated with pretty accessories and reserved as a space for entertain-ing — is finding itself again as a place for living, with all the demands that come with it: wall space for a flat-screen TV, speakers for Friday-night movies, a surface for board games, storage for remote con-trols, seating for guests. It needs to be stylish enough to host dressy Thanksgiv-ing hors d'oeuvres and still be comfy enough for Sunday afternoon naps.

As Washington designer Patrick Baglino Jr. explains, "When the room is organized and looks good, and is arranged in a way that is conducive to conversation and living, it's a total picture: style, form, function." You might think that means the first order of business is to hide the TV, but both

Carley and Baglino agree that it's no longer passe to have the telly out in plain sight. "It is what it is," Carley says. "We watch TV."

What's more impor-tant is to make the room ready to pivot to which-ever activity is happening next, whether that's book club in the morning or a video-game session after school. Think about how the room flows, whether people can walk through it without bumping into fur-niture. Use durable fabrics to stand up to spills. Get those cords organized and

out of sight. And make sure there's adequate, dimmable recessed and task lighting. Whether it's called a living room, family room or multipur-pose room, "it's intended to be a place for a family to hang out," Carley says. "Make it a place that everyone wants to enjoy."

■ DVDs, DVRs, stream-ing-media consoles, game consoles, cords — they all come together to make an unsightly mess, Carley says. A media cabinet with slatted doors, such as

Marin 58-Inch Media Con-sole, or one with a mixture of open and closed shelves, will conceal it all without inhibiting remote signals. Bonus: "If the equipment is behind closed doors, there's also less dusting!" Carley says.

■ Sonos' Play:1 wireless speaker, at 6.36-by-4.69 inches, is compact enough to tuck away on a book-shelf and move around as needed. The sound gets good reviews, too; Carley thought the speakers worked so well in the family room she designed for the 2015 D.C. Design House that she brought them home.

■ The days of hiding your television are over. "You have a TV. Lots of people have TVs. Why pretend like you don't watch TV?"

Carley asks. She likes the Muro Media Storage unit because it conceals cables yet keeps TV and related equipment accessible. The fiberboard back can be painted or wallpapered to blend in with the decor — or stand out against it.

■ Search for "cord" on Real Simple's website and 16 clever organizational solutions pop up, including using a paper towel tube, a clothespin and a trouser sock. Baglino, though, is fond of the binder-clip method, in which you clip the cords and hook the clip onto screws on the back of furniture. Not up for DIY? Try the self-adhesive CableDrop Cord Clips.

■ Cord clutter is the pet peeve of designers and homeowners everywhere. "I can't stand tangled-up cords behind tables and things all over a living room or a family room," Baglino says. He likes the bamboo

Cable Cubby to hide both cords and power strips and has two in his home. "They're super-efficient," he says. "They look good."

■ When choosing a media cabinet, Baglino suggests finding one with "pres-ence." Skip the standard three-tiered systems that are purely function; you want a cabinet that can stand on its own as an attractive piece of fur-niture. The Prime Media Console, made by Illinois-based Slate Design out of shesham wood and pow-dercoated iron, is a rustic beauty.

■ Stray remote controls cramp a family room's style. Keep them con-tained in a pretty box out of sight — just make sure you measure your remote first. (Some monster universal remotes might be hard to conceal.) Our pick: West Elm's Faux Shagreen Box in charcoal.

DESIGNFrom Page 4

system to determine if this is the problem. If it is not, it will be necessary to examine other heads until the problem head is identified. Irrigation valves may also leak, although this is usu-ally readily apparent. Irrigation suppliers stock solenoids, gas-kets and o-rings for valve repair. Depending on your ability, it may be prudent to enlist an irrigation contractor for valve repair.

As plants grow sprinklers sometimes become obstructed. Corrective pruning may solve this or it may be necessary to relocate the sprinkler head. The repeated weight of mowers running over sprinklers during the summer mowing season can force heads deeper, also resulting in improper coverage. Check for these possi-bilities and correct as needed.

Overspray onto sidewalks, driveways and streets or the side of a home is not uncommon. Evaluate the system and correct

it so water is applied only to the landscape. It is particularly criti-cal that no water be applied to the sides of buildings as this can stimulate indoor mold growth.

Large irrigation system leaks are readily apparent but some leaks are not as obvious, often resulting in low pressure. In these instances check for a wet area in the grass or look for grass that is more lush than that of the sur-rounding lawn. Excavate and effect repairs as necessary.

Additional information on residential irrigation systems is available at the University of Florida Extension website: edis.ifas.ufl.edu. Request Circular 825, Irrigation of Lawns and Gardens.

The warm days of early fall will quickly recede and check-ing irrigation on a cold day is a miserable proposition. Evaluating your system and adjusting now as needed will provide maximum return and minimum waste during the coming irrigation season.

— David Holmes is director of the Marion County Extension Office.

BIG SUN HOMES | Ocala Star-Banner | www.ocala.com | Saturday, September 26, 2015 7

Q: I have a painting signed by J. Gibson. It is 24 inches by 48. This is an original James Gibson, one of the earliest. It is on Upson board, in its original frame the same as when purchased. I purchased this from Gibson out of an automobile in 1969 or '70. I am the original owner. The painting has hung in my house since purchased.

I also have a book written about the High-waymen by Gary Monroe. It is signed by Monroe. Inside the book on Page 59 is a picture of a paint-ing similar to mine. I am interested in selling the painting and the book together. Can you tell me what you think their value is?

— C.E., Newberry A: Alfred Hair was the

inspiration for a group of young black artists during the 1950s and '60s that produced oil paintings of Florida landscapes in mas-sive quantities. It is said they produced 100,000 or more paintings selling them out of the trunks of their cars up and down Florida's east coast high-ways. James Gibson was one of the original group. When Alfred Hair was shot dead in 1970 in a bar the group lost their drive.

Later in the 20th century Jim Fitch, the curator of

MOFAC, Museum of Flor-ida Art and Culture, gave them the tag name the Highwaymen. The crest of the wave of feverish collecting has come and gone, although there is still some interest. I think your original Gibson painting, short of a little luck, would sell in the $500 range.

Q: I am enclosing several photos of pieces that belonged to my mother who passed away several years ago at age 92. I am not certain of the age of the pieces, but would love to know the value of them.

The sugar and creamer set are 2 ½ inches high and just over 3 inches across. They are hand painted and have Nippon painted on the bottom.

The flowered bowl is 10 inches long, 9 wide and 4 ½ inches high. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

— J.S., OcalaA: I really appreciate the

good clear photographs. The Nippon backstamp on the bottom of your hand-painted cream and sugar set indicates they were produced before 1920. The

word Nippon was used as the country of origin mark from 1890 until 1921 by the Japanese. Nippon marked porcelain products have been a specific category of collecting for decades. Your cream and sugar set is original, however collectors and new buyers should be aware that reproduction and fakes have flooded the market. Potential dollar value for your two pieces is below $50.

The other brightly colored dish with hand painted floral panels marked made in Japan was made after the Nippon era, circa 1930s. Potential dollar value is $15 to $20.

Q: I have four old books that I would like to sell, but have no idea of whom to contact. Could you please advise me of a local book buyer? The titles are “Tales from Shakespeare” by Charles and Mary Lamb, circa 1902. Second is “The Cricket on the Hearth” by Chas. Dickens, circa 1846. Third is “Mosses From an Old Manse,” by

Q: Dear Ed, I enjoyed your last column on tips for remodeling smaller bathrooms. But what about remodeling smaller kitch-ens? Can you please give us your views on how to make

the most of small kitchen spaces?

— Jean, KansasA: My two basic sugges-

tions for smaller bathrooms and smaller kitchens are about the same. Use lots of white colors and install a good exhaust fan to ventilate area. On top of my

basic tips, here are three smaller kitchen remodeling tips to keep in mind.

1. Get as much light into the kitchen as possible. Long rectangular windows up high and close to the ceiling can make use of lower wall space and get natural light into the area.

Skylights can also make up for limited availability to install large windows.

2. Use shelving or shelv-ing units in place of cabinets whenever possible. Since shelves are open spaces, visually it can look like you have a little more room in the kitchen. The downside

is now you just can't throw a mess of stuff in a cabinet and close the door.

3. Install a smaller size single bowl kitchen sink. No rule says you have to install a large kitchen sink.

— P.K., InternetA: The books you have

are of very little dollar value. Since you want to sell them you might find some interest with the Florida Antiquarian Booksellers. The website is www.floridabooksell-ers.com. Good luck.

Q: Can you help me with some glass items that my grandmother gave me? Can you tell if this is antique German glass from the 1930s and if there is any value?

— R.P., InternetA: The photograph

is not very helpful. From what I can see, it appears your glass punchbowl and eight cups are pressed glass. If I am correct, the dollar value is considerably below $100 for the set. However if they are cut crystal the value will be much higher.

We've all had them, those short-term crushes on fun, new accents for our home. Maybe it was a splashy new vase that was perfect on your mantel for a season. Or a print that looked great in your living room, until you redecorated. But then there are a few pieces we fall in love with for life, the decorating mainstays we come back to year after year because they are so timeless, so versatile, so perfect for us and our homes. For me, one of those forever-loves is the iron garden urn. Through the years, I've used these amazing planters in a mil-lion different ways, from Christmas tree stands to ice buckets at summer parties.

I challenged Nell Hill's designers Bruce and Bev-erly to take my old friend the garden urn and come up with five fabulous fall treatments you can use as inspiration when decorat-ing your home this season.

Pretty in plaidOne of the best things

about fall is being engulfed in a dizzying bouquet of colors every time you walk outside. One of our splashy displays captures the sienna, umber and sage of the fall landscape and pulls them into a fanciful package. Bev and Bruce started with a metal orb. They filled up a hollow sphere with treasures, like a playful tin plaid basket.

The display is grounded on a wicker basket, which provides a nice, textural base. Next comes a fun plaid basket, with the lid resting in back. The basket acts as a container for fall foliage. We used picks of fall leaves and wild flowers, plus super-cute gourds. Bev twisted and wired them so they descended into the foreground. We love floral arrangements that reach below and above the mouth of the container — it adds more drama.

Natural beautyHere we used our wire

orb again, but this time it's framing a very different picture. In fall and winter, I like to pull images of deer into my decor. The Eng-lish hunt club feel, with its rich colors and images

of hounds and deer and horses, seems perfect this time of year and was the inspiration.

An intriguing deer's head, with its white-washed, distressed finish, is the arresting focal point. But closer, there's a faux antler candelabrum hold-ing pillar candles. Outfit this with battery-oper-ated flameless candles so you can set it aglow and not worry about it. The display is finished out with fall foliage picks and a twist of honeysuckle vine.

Tower of lightBev and Bruce used

our interesting metal orb again, this time to encase a three-tiered server filled with candles. Imagine it lit up in the early autumn evening, offering a romantic sparkle to your outdoor dinner.

When creating displays like this one, the key is to secure the server on something steady so it doesn't come crashing down. You could insert some old books or bricks. This fall we are having fun mixing together an assortment of candles, all different sizes, but finished in a soft metallic or cream. It's a dreamy effect! The finishing

touch — a rope of bare honeysuckle vine twisted around the orb — brings in a touch of organic energy.

A capital successI love this simple but

stunning treatment — it looks dramatic but it's easy to create and can be left outside on your porch with no worries about wind, rain or other acts of nature bringing it crashing down.

You can pull off this great look in two easy steps. First, place a fall wreath or twist of faux foliage on the mouth of the urn. Then, insert a garden statue or capital. Done!

Treasure jar

This lovely display is just as easy to create as the one above. Like the other four treatments that feature lots of break-able treasures, it's not weather-resistant. It's a great pick for a sheltered porch, interior display or decoration for an outdoor party.

Insert something steady and solid for the jar to rest upon. Then add in your fall wreath or vines. Insert the jar, and you're done. Beautiful!
