H ave you dusted off your spreader in anticipation of your

turf’s first dose of fertil-izer? Many homeowners take pride in their lawns and want to see them healthy and green. Unfortunately, it is easy to over-apply or misapply fertilizer. You may not see any direct effects, but it can potentially con-tribute to water pollution by leaching into the groundwa-ter or running into surface water like rivers, streams, lakes and springs. No one wants to do that, so this article will cover some of the basics for properly fertiliz-ing your turf.

In order to fertilize your turf properly, you have to select the right type of fertilizer and apply it at the right time and in the right amount to maximize plant uptake and benefit. Before you select your fertilizer, you should get your soil tested to determine your nutrient levels and see if you need to add lime to increase your pH. The soil pH is important because if the pH is off then your turfgrass will be unable to easily absorb the nutrients and stresses it out. Insects, diseases and weeds love stressed turf. The UF/IFAS Extension Soil Testing Laboratory, http://soilslab.ifas.ufl.edu/, located in Gainesville will test it for a small fee.

This is a good time to get a soil test and apply lime, if needed, because the time to start fertilizing around here is early April.

After getting a soil test, you need to select a fertil-izer. The fertilizer bag will have three numbers on the front which indicate the percentage of nitrogen,

phosphorus and potas-sium. Nitrogen helps green up the grass and increases leaf material (and mowing), phosphorus helps grow strong roots, and potas-sium helps grass withstand stress.

Based on soil tests, most Florida soils are high in phosphorus. Because of this, many turf fertilizers have zero as the middle number and that is a good thing.

Most fertilizers have some slow-release nitrogen, providing a longer-lasting response and reducing the potential of burning it. It is often indicated by a percentage of insoluble nitrogen. The more slow-release nitrogen you have in your fertilizer (over 30 per-cent of the total nitrogen), the fewer times you have to fertilize the lawn.

Each turfgrass has a dif-ferent fertilizer requirement which is based on research. The University of Florida has reduced the math by coming up with a table of recommended application rates based on the percent-age nitrogen in the fertilizer you pick and the size of your lawn. The publication is called "Figuring out Fertil-izer for the Home Lawn." It is found in "The Florida Lawn Handbook" which can be found online at http://hort.ufl.edu/yourflori-dalawn/ or purchased from the IFAS Extension Book-store or Amazon.com.

As easy as this publication is, most people don’t really know the square footage of their lawn. The easiest way to figure it out is to measure how big your footstep is (try for a 3-foot footstep), count how many footsteps you do for the length and width, multiply each by 3, and multiply them together. Do this for your front, back and side lawns, and add them together. Don’t include landscaped beds into the amount.

Once you found the proper amount and put it in your spreader, you need to make sure that you don’t overapply it. The best way to do that is to calibrate your spreader, so you know exactly what setting to use to deliver that amount. The Florida Lawn Handbook also has a great article on that. 

If you have a small strip of lawn, use a deflector shield to keep it from going on the paved area. Around water bodies, leave a 10-ft strip of unfertilized turf to avoid polluting the water.

After you fertilize the lawn, irrigate with quarter-inch of water. If you apply too much water, it will go past the root zone.

You've planned the perfect inte-rior remodel. Flooring, wallpaper, furniture, mirrors, art, windows, doors, countertops, sinks and accent colors have been chosen.

But all that hard work can be undermined if your personal palace isn't illuminated properly. Lighting fixtures need just as much careful consideration as any other aspect of your redesign — they often occupy a prominent spot in your home, and they're the natural object of focus as soon as they're turned on.

And there are new, cutting-edge ways to bring lighting into your home. Light switches will soon be obsolete.

"I have been in this business for 28 years, and the last couple of years have seen more changes than maybe the previous 26," said Houman Shir, managing direc-tor and founding partner of Euro Moda, a new high-end light-ing and furniture store in Irvine, California.

It's a fascinating time — tra-ditionalism coexists with the avant-garde, and new tech-nologies have revolutionized his industry, Shir said.

"Chandeliers are popular; so is the midcentury look. But then we have pieces like this, which are very popular as well." Shir pointed to a Spanish-made light that looked like an unfurling Mobius strip; its thin surface was a continuous band of bright, warm light. "Everything depends on what kind of statement you want to make. But there are so many more possibilities now."

Connectivity: Smart homes are no longer sci-ence fiction, and lighting is an important part of that revolution. Wireless technology is making its way into all aspects of home design, and lighting control is no exception. Radio frequency-based systems are the stan-dard technology, but

there are other choices, including power-line communication, which uses power transmission lines to carry data to and from your fittings. With programs such as Insteon and WeMo, your lights can now be controlled by smartphone or computer. Lights are an integral part of the Internet of things: many elements of your domestic environment — from the toaster to the fridge — can now perform autonomously through programming and prede-termined commands.

Futuristic lighting: Unusual designs, complex shapes, wall sconces and floor lamps that resemble spaceships perched to take off — the pride of many showrooms are lighting fixtures that

look like they’ve traveled here from some “Jet-sons” future. European designers dominate this category: Italy’s Artemide Group and FLOS, Hol-land’s Moooi and British design group Tom Dixon.

LED dominance: Fixtures that use light-emitting diodes consume much less energy than other light sources. Also, they produce a fraction of the heat, meaning your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard during the warm season. LEDs don’t contain mercury, so they’re generally healthier than some traditional lights. They can also be built into furnishings and other unusual areas, and they last a long time compared to traditional light bulbs.

Manufacturers who had been using old technolo-gies such as metal halide and cold cathode are finally replacing them with LEDs. And you can program some LED prod-ucts to change color and intensity.

Midcentury modern look: “Mad Men” may be over, but its look lives on. Popular furniture, tex-tiles, colors and fixtures from the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s celebrate the simple lines and meticulous craftsmanship of midcen-tury modern design. Many lighting manufacturers, including Kichler, Prog-ress Lighting, Hinkley and Sonneman, are making lighting fixtures in mid-century style.

Oversize fi xtures: Light-ing fixtures that are bold

focal points, especially in living and dining rooms, are becoming a require-ment in stylish homes. Large pendant lamps over kitchen islands and dining room tables are part of this look. Homes with tall ceilings or a two-story foyer are ideal for oversize hanging lights and multitiered chan-deliers, which can make a dramatic statement if they’re the first fixture that people see when they enter your home. They naturally draw the eye upward.

Seashell lighting: If you’ve got a home near the beach, this might be the inspiration you’ve been waiting for. Well-made seashell fixtures showcase the colors and textures of natural sea shells.

Polished shells add pizazz _ they reflect light in every direction to create a beau-tifully dramatic effect. Many fixture designs incorporate other nautical traits, and they’re proving very popular in beachside homes. Imitation ship lanterns are big. So are fixtures sealed with bev-eled or seeded glass.

Warm-colored metal: Bronze, brass and gold tones are making their mark everywhere this year, including in light fixtures. Metallic hues are warmer, and designers are less leery now of mixing two or three metallic looks in one object: gold with silver, copper with brass. Gone are the days when one finish characterizes the entire house, or even a single room.

The Ocala/Marion County Association of Realtors® recently sponsored the annual Southeaster Youth

Fair that was held on February 20-27, 2016. The Southeastern Youth Fair is the largest and oldest event

of its kind. This year marked the 76th annual event with more than 1,000 kids that showed and sold

livestock, art projects, and showed their cooking and tractor skills. Most of the participants are local

students who are engaged in 4-H and FFA. The entire week was about the youth and the animals they

have worked with for weeks and months, including goats, lambs, pigs and steers, and the home arts

projects they worked on, such as art, cooking, sewing and more.

This year, OMCAR purchased two goats, one being the Grand Champion Goat, two lambs, one being the

Reserve Grand Champion Lamb and two hogs, one being the Premier Exhibitor Hog from the Youth Fair.

The meat will all be donated to Brother’s Keeper, Interfaith Emergency Services, St. Theresa’s Catholic

Church in Belleview and the Salvation Army.

Participating in the fair teaches kids, ages 5-18, lessons about agriculture, the responsibility and the

knowledge they need to have a healthy animal. The Ocala/

I’m not sure why, but Easter is one of those holidays that always sneaks up on me. Maybe it’s because it’s not on the same day every year. But it always seems like, suddenly, it’s Good Friday and I have a house full of guests coming for Easter brunch, and I haven’t done a thing to get ready. If you’re like me, don’t panic. Here are some easy Easter table centerpieces you can throw together in a jiff.

Eggcelent ideaNow that eggs are good

for you again, I’ve started having two farm eggs for breakfast every day. I’m hoping the added protein will make my nails stron-ger! I’m crazy about the brown ones because they just feel more authen-tic than the white ones. Crazy, I know. When I get the carton home, I take all the eggs out and put them in a pretty bowl in my fridge. It makes me smile as I pull out the bowl brimming with eggs each morning, like I’m living on a farm or something. And, it makes Dan happy because it gives him another excuse to tease me.

So, this is my first quick centerpiece idea: Fill a vintage bowl with natural eggs, either brown or white or the interesting variety of shades you can find from your local farmers now. Sweet, simple and done in 30 seconds. Score!

bowl of eggs with some Easter decor.

Livin’ largeIf you have a bit of time

and want to knock your Easter table design out of the park, here’s some inspiration. This yummy shot is of my dining room when I lived in my grand old house in Atchison. This was for a formal party — and a book shoot — so we did it up big. But, it still wasn’t overly hard to create. We just layered up dishes from several dif-ferent china patters, then topped each place setting with a glass jar filled with chocolate eggs. The napkins are tied in simple satin ribbon, with a little flower threaded in. The place card holders were a little harder to pull off. We found wheat grass at the local market, tied it up in a bunch and tucked in the name card. The grass kept wilting, so we had to fill the saucer with a bit of water.

Sans centerpieceHere’s another fun

idea. A friend of mine for a spring luncheon decided not to have a centerpiece at all. Instead, she mixed in her mother’s old china and Depression glass, all in pinks and greens. Each place setting was topped with a petite bouquet. You could snip a sprig from a flowering bush or anything that’s in bloom in your garden. The seed packs add lots of fun, and give hope for the beauti-ful flowers to come when the weather warms up.

has drawn another notable name to the Griffith Park-adjacent neighborhood: actor Jason Segel. The “How I Met Your Mother” star was the buyer of street artist Shepard Fairey’s Mediterranean-style home that sold last month for $2.25 million.

The 1920s residence originally hit the market in January for $1.835 million and spurred a bidding war that saw Segel emerge the

victor in late February. Fairey bought the home more than a decade ago for $1.356 million.

It’s easy to see why the 2,523-square-foot house, designed by architect H.B. Benson, generated so much interest. Original details include wrought-iron work that wraps the balconies and stair-ways. Broad archways, decorative tile risers and hand-plastered walls continue the classic look
