Changing lives in one hour a week

For some Bigs and Littles, time together doesn’t happen in parks or museums or stadiums - it

happens in school cafeterias and playgrounds and gymnasiums instead. The school-based

program matches elementary-aged Littles with Bigs and brings them together for an hour each

week during the school year to eat lunch, play a board game, read a book or just talk about

their week. School-based mentoring is especially important for children who might nototherwise be able to be Littles in the community-based program because of home schedules,

high mobility, or language barriers. For these children, schools are the ideal setting to maintain

regular meetings with a mentor who can support academic and social development.

Some school-based Bigs are high school students, so

as they give caring one-on-one support, they grow in

confidence and responsibility as well. And when

school is out for the summer, matches can keep in

touch through field trips or as pen pals.

    Education and Enrichment

By the time they are high school seniors, Littles are already

significantly more likely to graduate than their non-mentored

peers. They have better relationships with their family andpeers, and they are less likely to have engaged in risky behavior.

But more than that, they are ready to take their next step and

look to their future. The innovative Education & Enrichment

program helps teens explore their options and find their own

path to success in school and career. The program includes

individually-tailored assistance to help youth navigate the

transition to adulthood and take advantage of the many

    opportunities available to them.

    Special Initiatives

    Hmong Mentoring Initiative

The Hmong community is a dynamic cultural element of the Twin Cities. But many

    5/12

Hmong youth face significant risk factors, including a high teen birth rate and low high

school graduation rates. Research shows that

mentoring helps youth overcome these challenges.

The Hmong Mentoring Initiative provides increased

recruitment and support for matches of Hmong youth

and mentors to ensure success for every child.

    Native American Mentoring Initiative

For more than a decade, Big Brothers Big Sisters has

participated in a collection of mentoring organizations that serve Native American

youths. Big Brothers Big Sisters seeks to identify mentors who can support youth with

    stable, caring adult relationships.

    Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) Partnership

The NAZ initiative is working to end multi-generational poverty in North Minneapolis,

using education as its tool. As part of this dynamic and innovative partnership,

mentors are provided to children in the neighborhood.

    Mentoring Children of Prisoners

Children with incarcerated parents are significantly more likely to someday be involved

in the justice system themselves. A caring Big Brother or Big Sister can provide the

kind of stability and support that helps a child stay on the right track, giving them a

better chance at interrupting this cycle.

    Sports Buddies

Strong bodies. Strong minds. Strong relationships. Sports Buddies invites volunteers to

get involved in mentoring by doing what they already love to do. Monthly activities likesporting activities and tickets to professional games are

prearranged, so all matches need to do is show up and

have fun. Bonding over athletics passes along values like

good sportsmanship, wellness and leadership through

    the power of play.

    Beyond School Walls

Several local corporations have partnered with Big

Brothers Big Sisters to give back to the community by

sharing employee time and life experience. Littles - all students at nearby schools - visitcorporate headquarters to spend time one-on-one with an employee volunteer

    mentor.

PRESENTING THE TWIN CITIES OF SAINT PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA

The Twin Cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis are a unique blend of small town and major

cosmopolitan hub. Both urban cores boast a thriving business atmosphere. Saint Paul, as the

state capital, is home to state government and has a more historical vibe. Minneapolis is the

larger and more commercial of the two cities. Outside of the central downtowns, however,

both cities have many distinct neighborhoods, and residents identify more with their individualneighborhood than with the larger city as a whole.

Both cities share a common root of being river towns, and the outdoors is still a major

attraction for residents and tourists alike to this day. In addition to the mighty Mississippi River,

there are more than 100 lakes (more than 900 when including the suburbs), more than 250

parks, and miles of biking and walking trails.

Nearly every weekend in the summer there are several outdoor active events for participants

and spectators—triathlons, biking races, running races, boat races, water skiing competitions,

    golf tournaments, and more.

The active lifestyle of Twin Cities’ residents doesn't lie dormant during the winter. There aremiles of cross-country skiing trails, several downhill ski areas within an hour drive, ice skating,

snowmobile riding, sledding, and—of course—ice fishing.

For those who prefer activity of the spectator variety, the Twin Cities are home to the major

sports teams: Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Timberwolves,

Minnesota Lynx, Minnesota United FC (soccer), and Minnesota Swarm (lacrosse).

There is also a minor league baseball team, the Saint Paul Saints. The Twin Cities have hosted

the World Series, Super Bowl, NCAA Basketball Finals, the USGA U. S. Open, the PGA

Championship, and the Special Olympics. In 2014, Target Field was the setting for baseball's

AllStar Game. In 2016, the beautiful Hazeltine Golf Course will host the Ryder Cup, and in 2018,the Super Bowl will be played in a newly built state-of-the-art stadium.

But the Twin Cities have more to offer than participatory and spectator sporting events. There

are countless arts and culture offerings here. The Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra

has a reputation as one of the top orchestras in the world. The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra is

regarded as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world.

Since the early 1960s, the Guthrie Theatre has staged A-plus shows from the classical to the

contemporary. Popular national shows and performers also tour through the Twin Cities year

round at stages in both Minneapolis and Saint Paul, and at the University. There are over 30

theatre venues, 10 dance companies, and 30 classical music groups in the cities of Saint Paul and

    Minneapolis alone.

For the museum-goer, there are more than 60 museums in the Twin Cities. The Science Museum

of Minnesota and the Minnesota Children's Museum (both in Saint Paul) are highly interactive

learning and fun experiences for the entire family. The Minnesota History Center is an

interactive museum for all ages with permanent and changing exhibits, lectures and events.

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts has a collection of more than 100,000 pieces. The Walker Art

Center has been called “possibly the best contemporary art museum in the U. S.” by Newsweek, and has over 11,000 pieces. The University of Minnesota's Weisman Art Museum is also a

    contemporary art destination.

Beyond the outdoor, sports, entertainment, and culture, perhaps the biggest attraction for the

Twin Cities is the lifestyle. Forbes hailed Saint Paul and Minneapolis as the nation's healthiest

cities. USA Today named Saint Paul as North America's “Most Romantic City.” The Twin Citiesoffer award-winning restaurants (several chefs have been regional James Beard Award

winners). In addition to the popular Mall of America, there are plenty of unique shopping

districts in both cities and in the suburbs.
