ICON AWARDS

JCC of San Francisco, San Francisco, CASefirat Ha-Omer environmental signage Board Chair: Susan DiamondInterim Executive Director: Judy EdelsonChair: Laura KlapperFacing the challenge of creating educational pieces for an audience with highlyvarying levels of Jewish practice and knowledge, our Jewish Educator, RabbiEve Ben-Ora, proposed that we create environmental signage for the SefiratHa-Omer observances that could serve both as an ambient educational pieceand as a touchstone for a daily observance. She asked us to consider theconcept behind an Advent Calendar in Christian practice, which served both atemporal purpose of counting the days of observance and a spiritual purpose of

creating a daily opportunity for reflection. We came up with a pair of six-footretractable banners for the Counting of the Omer with a blessing and numberedlines for each day. Each was covered by another banner with educationalinformation about the observance, which could be moved down day by day toreveal a new line. These Sefirat Ha-Omer banners were installed in our centralatrium on movable bases, so that they could both serve as ambient educationalpieces and be used in daily observances led by the Jewish educator.
