This bibliography again contains two categories of books and articles: a) works concerned with music and musical instruments of non-Western

peoples; b) many (but certainly not all) publications on ancient and early European

music and musical instruments and on Western folk music. (Song collections without important commentary, for instance, are, as a rule, omitted.)

Publications of a more general character (e.g. reports of travels, ethnological expeditions and missionary activities) which often contain interesting data on music and musical instruments, musicians and the röle of music in triballife, are, as a rule, not included. These can easily be located by referring to the extensive bibliographies found in works marked by an asterisk. Nor are inserted publications in the Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, ]apanese, Indonesian, ]avanese and Sundanese languages, and in the languages of the Indian subcontinent.

A capital A after a title indicates, that the publication in question is included in the library of the Ethnomusicological Department of the Royal Tropical Institute, zA Linnaeusstraat, Amsterdam Oost, which, on request, is accessible to everybody interested in this field of study. Similarly B represents the General Library of the Royal Tropical Institute; C the Music Library of the Municipal Museum, The Hague, 41 Stad-

The Berlin Archives used to be far more substantial, some 12.000 phonographie reeords onee being kept there. Serious losses, however, were sustained as a eonsequence of vVorld War II.2)

After the seeond world war the Russian occupation authorities appropriated well over 5000 cylinders, whieh have till the present day not yet been made available again. The remainder, wh ich may be estimated at about one third of the entire colleetion, was destroyed in post-war days, consequently it must be eonsidered a total loss. The reconstruetion of the Archives was taken in hand again in 1948, and has progressed to such an extent that at present, apart from the phonographie records whieh could be saved, and numerous grammophone records, as many as 5°00 tape reeordings made by own and other expeditions could be added. - Cf. also 3376 and 3383.

3) Since 1948 the Archives have been in charge of KURT REINHARD (3370-3388b), who is also occupying the chair of ethnomusicology in the "Free University" whieh was founded in the same year. He now tries to revive this Berlin centre. line 10. Instead of: equivalent, read: equiponderant. line 27. Instead of: J AIRAZBHON, read: J AIRAZBHOY. line 7.
