Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore. Psalm 133

Psalm 133 is the fourteenth of fifteen "songs of ascents" (Psalms 120-134) that pilgrims sang on their way to celebrate Israel's feasts at various times of the year in Jerusalem. These joyful gatherings were times of family reunion and feasting as well as worship. The poetry in this song compares this "good and pleasant" uniting of Israel's brethren when pilgrims flow to "the mountains of Zion" to two things. First this song pictures the holy festivity associated with the anointing oil flowing from the head to the beard to the collar at the ordination of levitical priests. Then this song pictures the flow of Mount Hermon's moisture ("dew") in the north of Israel that is a key source of the Jordan River that refreshes all of Israel. One of the great blessings in life as the people of God are our times of feasting -- "breaking bread," eating together, sharing our food. I recently referenced this psalm as I described to Bobby Ross, Jr., a reporter with The Christian Chronicle, the trip that a group of ministers make to the annual Sermon Seminar at Austin Graduate School of Theology (see the link below). But I also think of this psalm each month when we have our "potluck" lunch and in the summer when we have ice cream suppers. I am grateful for these times of eating together.

An encourager may be outgoing and gregarious. Or, this person

more introverted and a person of few words. God can use a

person to encourage through his or her own personality through

a word, a smile, a hug, or in any number of ways.
