BHRC Resident Spotlight

Wallace Nessmith

“AWESOME AUGUST ACTIVITY NEWS” We will be really busy this month in a fun kind of way.

Along with our regularly scheduled programs, we will be

celebrating some not so nationally known events such as Banana

Split Day, Hawaii Admission Day & the Patent of the Waffle Iron. We

always look for a good reason to enjoy food & socialize & these

sounded pretty good.

We will also be making some “Fudge in a bag” which will require a

little work but we are sure it will be worth the effort.

August 23rd through the 29th is National Health Care Unit

Coordinators week. The purpose of this observation is to raise

awareness of those who play a role in scheduling appointments,

providing transportation & escorts to these appointments.

To show appreciation to our staff in this department, we will treat

them with gifts & a special breakfast.

We Hope Everyone Is Enjoying a Happy and Safe Summer.

This month, our spotlight shines on Wallace Neesmith

Mr. Wallace Nessmith who prefers to be called Wallace is in our spotlight this month. Wallace was

born in Jackson County, Fl. & is the middle child, he has 3 brothers & 1 sister. He stated counting

himself and his parents they made a family of 7 & he is very grateful for them. He spent most of his life

in Jackson County. Growing up he loved to play all games, walk & anything fun. He remembers liking

to jump off of the swing while swinging. The furthest Wallace has traveled is to North Carolina &

Tennessee. His favorite pastime now is sitting on the porch rocking in the rocking chairs & watching

TV. He says his favorite memory is meeting new people. He says what he likes most here at BHRC is

the staff, they make me laugh and are funny. We asked what makes him laugh, happy or makes you

smile and he replied “Jokes”, I love a good joke. If Wallace could have one wish to do something

exciting he said it would be to go fishing.

Lastly, we asked Wallace what advice he could give people reading this newsletter. Wallace replied:

“SMILE, IT’S A NEW DAY”!!!

. Joel’s favorite pastime is watching Football, but this writer knows 1st hand that he also loves

watching wrestling on the WWE network. When asked about his stay here at BHRC he stated he loves

the people here the most and one thing BHRC always gets right all of the time is his Medications. If he

could have one wish it would be to go to the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls. We asked him to tell us

something unique or special about him. His reply: My height, I am 7 foot 1 inches tall and then my

sense of humor, just about everything makes me happy, smile & laugh. He is most thankful for his Mom

& being here at BHRC.

Joel says “Have a positive outlook on life, Love God & others.”

National Senior Citizens Day National Senior Citizens Day August 21st, honors

our elderly population. On this day, we are

encouraged to recognize & show appreciation

for the value & contribution of elderly people to

home, family & society. In Ronald Reagan’s 1988 Presidential

Proclamation, he said "For all they have

achieved throughout life and for all they

continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens

our thanks & a heartfelt salute. We can best

demonstrate our gratitude & esteem by making

sure that our communities are good places in

which to mature & grow older."

On National Senior Citizens Day, we should:

*Spend some time with senior citizens

*Show our appreciation for senior citizens

*Do volunteer work in support of the elderly

If you are a senior citizen, enjoy your day any

way you desire.

After all, this is your day!

“Red Hat Ladies” Luncheon, was an enjoyable experience for everyone.

We enjoyed great food and fellowship with this wonderful group of ladies from our community. This group is so

much fun to be with as we share great times while making so many fond memories!

A special thanks to “SandBar & Grille” for catering the BHRC luncheon for the Ladies, food was awesome!

Kidneys are Nothing to Kid About! By Karen D. Shorter, MBA, PharmD, B.C.G.P.

The kidneys are powerful organs that perform many vital functions, such as removing waste products from the body,

balancing bodily fluids, releasing hormones that regulate blood pressure & controlling production of red blood cells. When

organs stop working properly, individuals may not notice any symptoms. However, they can be at risk for renal disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a permanent loss of kidney function that begins as a diminished renal reserve &

progresses to chronic renal insufficiency. CKD decreases the kidneys’ ability to perform necessary functions & may

eventually lead to kidney failure, requiring dialysis or a transplant to maintain life. The National Kidney Foundation

estimates that one in three people may develop kidney disease. Since there is evidence earlier stages of CKD can be

detected & treated, long-term care nurses should be familiar with standards of care for all stages of CKD.

CKD Detection One of the most common causes of CKD is diabetes. Current recommendations call for annual urine

testing of all individuals with diabetes. To determine residents at risk for CKD who may already be in the early stages of the

disease, a simple, cost effective diagnostic tool, the urine albumin test, can be ordered. This test detects microalbuminuria

& is the most sensitive test for detecting early-stage CKD.

• Stopping smoking • Exercising regularly • Decreasing salt consumption • Decreasing use of cola-based & alcoholic

beverages • Avoiding nephrotoxic drugs, including over-the-counter and prescription strength nonsteroidal analgesic

agents such as ibuprofen (Motrin®) & naproxen ((Naprosyn®, Aleve®) Since patients with CKD are at an increased risk of

mortality through cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, and other comorbidities, earlier diagnosis & treatment is critical to

slowing or stopping the progression of CKD.

Additionally, testing for proteinuria with the dipstick method is a quick & easy option. CKD can also be clinically diagnosed

by the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which measures the level of kidney function & determines the stage of kidney

disease. Normal GFR in both kidneys in adults is 120 to 125ml/min. Lower GFR results indicate decreased kidney function.

Disease Management Residents in early stages of decline may decrease the risk of further kidney disease by: • Controlling

blood pressure • Controlling blood sugar • Controlling weight
