“IT’S ABOUT JESUS CHRIST AND HOW WE CAN GO OUT INTO THE WORLD AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE,” SAID JACK DE WITT, FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT OF REQUEST FOODS IN HOLLAND, MICH.

The mission at Cornerstone is to empower men and

women to excel as influencers in our world for Christ

by offering a student-focused learning community

where Jesus Christ is central. The addition of a chapel,

media studies, music facility and a major baseball

complex are important steps in efforts to fulfill this

mission. Currently more than 1,280 undergraduate

students worship in a make-shift chapel in the Hansen

Athletic Center. While this has been somewhat

the De Witts to be part of a thanksgiving service that

attended by students, faculty and staff. “It was a God

moment just to see the kids singing together and

Mary agreed.

“I felt the Holy Spirit,” she said. “I just wanted to hug

every student. There is something special about this

campus.”

Jack felt it, too.

“It was the perfect morning,” he said. “Using scripture

The De Witts want the students to have a place to

meditate and come together for worship.

“Every university ought to have a chapel,” said Mary.

“Chapel is at the core of what we need today.”

The couple had visited the campus years ago but

recently began a relationship with Dr. Stowell, who

shared some of the campus needs.

After much prayer, the De Witts decided they wanted

to give to this foundational facility on the Cornerstone

campus.

CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY HAS SEEN RECORD GROWTH OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. WITH THAT GROWTH IN STUDENT ENROLLMENT COMES A NEED FOR MORE ON-CAMPUS RESIDENT HOUSING.

As the plans for the new baseball stadium were

created, architect Wayne Visbeen imagined

combining the needs of housing with that of a

baseball complex – building a 100-bed residence

hall on top of the ground floor of the stadium.

In October, the board of trustees approved plans

for the new combo stadium and residence hall.

Instead of turning students away from living on

campus, Cornerstone will have the opportunity to

welcome more students into its community.

“A new residence hall will give us the capacity

to carry out our mission and vision,” said Gerald

Longjohn, vice president of spiritual formation

who oversees the residence halls. “I can’t think

of a better place to live in community than

Cornerstone.”

The first floor of the building will be used for

baseball and softball offices, locker rooms and a

training facility while the top two floors will be

available for students to reside.

During the summer months, sports campers will be

able to stay in the dorms as well.

“Community is everything,” said Visbeen. “The

ability to put a baseball stadium and dorm in place

on campus is a testimony to God’s greatness.”

residence hall, please visit

CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY IS PROUD TO WELCOME HEAD BASEBALL COACH DAVE MITROFF TO DEVELOP AND LEAD OUR NEW BASEBALL PROGRAM. AS THE HEAD COACH, HE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR DEVELOPING A START-UP PROGRAM AND RECRUITING A COMPETITIVE TEAM THAT FOCUSES ON REGIONAL AND GLOBAL OUTREACH.

As Coach Mitroff recruits players, both nationally and locally, he is committed to not only finding student-athletes who will achieve excellence both on the field and in the classroom, but, also reflect Cornerstone’s mission to influence our world for Christ.

Coach Mitroff is passionate about the opportunity to model and inspire players to grow in their relationship with God.

“I don’t just want to invest in players’ athletic abilities while they are here, I want to invest in their character and spiritual growth,” said Mitroff. “The entire coaching staff wants them to go on to be the best fathers, husbands and employees after graduation.”

In addition to having an impact on his own team, Mitroff plans to utilize the new program and baseball complex as a tool to have a greater Christian influence in West Michigan through hosting community and regional events, tournaments and clinics.

To fulfill this vision, the program’s goals are:

1. To field a team of authentic followers of Jesus who are capable of competing at a high level so that the testimony of Christ can be displayed through them on a platform of excellence.

2. To disciple our players toward growth and effectiveness as followers of Christ which will enable them to both live and play baseball to the Glory of God .

3. To build a passion for global impact into the lives of our players.

Each year our team will seek to advance the gospel globally by going overseas to minister through baseball by connecting with local missionaries and churches in countries like the Dominican Republic.

4. To build a facility that will attract both regional and national events to our campus in order to raise the profile of CU for student recruitment but more importantly to give us the opportunity to host players, families and friends in an environment that expresses the love of Christ as a witness to the power of His saving grace.

5. To fulfill our calling as a Christ-centered academic community by encouraging our athletes to excel in their class work and to make a positive contribution both academically and spiritually to the campus.

6. To enhance the campus environment, our athletes will seek ways to serve fellow-students, faculty and staff as a testimony to their commitment to follow Christ.

7. To make an impact on our community by involvement in urban ministries and mentorship of younger players on travel teams and other opportunities to bring Christ into the lives of those we serve.

Accomplishing these goals will enable Cornerstone University to fulfill its calling as a Christ-centered, globally aware learning community that is influencing the world for Christ, as it seeks to enable it’s athletes to ‘Build a Life That Matters.’
