About Chicago Children’s Choir

Chicago Children’s Choir (Josephine Lee, President and Artistic Director) is a non-profi t organization that inspires and unites youth from diverse backgrounds to become global citizens through music. Founded in Hyde Park in direct response to the Civil Rights Movement in 1956, CCC has grown from one choir into a vast network of in-school and after-school programs serving 5,200 students across the city of Chicago.

CCC has impacted the lives of more than 50,000 diverse youth throughout its 63-year history. Since its founding, CCC has focused on building programs that refl ect the racial and economic diversity of Chicago. Eighty percent of youth served are from low-moderate income homes, with over 4,000 students annually participating completely free of charge. All singers in CCC programs receive some level of subsidy. High school seniors enrolled in CCC have a 100% graduation and college acceptance rate, becoming global ambassadors who carry on CCC’s core values in a wide array of professional fi elds.

Under the leadership of President and Artistic Director Josephine Lee, Chicago Children’s Choir has achieved new heights and revolutionized the youth choral arts through innovative, creative partnerships and new artistic endeavors. Recent projects include the world-premiere hip-hop musical Long Way Home, written and directed by the renowned Q Brothers Collective, which played to fi ve sold-out houses in 2018; performance in a new staged production of Leonard Bernstein’s MASS under the direction of Marin Alsop in July 2018 and 2019 with two frequent creative partners: the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Ravinia Festival; and collaboration on Chance

the Rapper’s debut studio album The Big Day (2019) as well as a collaboration on his GRAMMY Award-winning Coloring Book (2016) studio recording and tour performances. CCC has served as a model for youth choirs across the country including Boston Children’s Chorus, Denver Children’s Choir and Indianapolis Children’s Choir.

As a national and international touring ensemble, Chicago Children’s Choir has performed throughout the United States, in Cuba, South Africa, India, Argentina, Uruguay, Korea, Canada, Japan and Europe and for dignitaries such as former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, former Chinese President Hu Jintao, former South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak, Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso.

CCC has performed with or for acclaimed artists such as Renée Fleming, Denyce Graves, Kathleen Battle, Luciano Pavarotti, Samuel Ramey, Yo-Yo Ma, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Enrique Iglesias, Quincy Jones, Al Green, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Bobby McFerrin, Kurt Elling, Celine Dion, Eddie Vedder and Beyoncé. CCC has recorded on multiple labels including James Ginsburg’s Cedille Records (Songs from Spoon River, 2009) and has released six studio recordings under its own label —Harmony Anew (2018), We All Live Here (2016), Holiday Harmony (2010), Songs on the Road to Freedom (2008), Sita Ram (2006) and Open Up Your Heart (2004).

The Beverly Neighborhood Choir, under conductor Heather Stewart, is one of Chicago Children’s Choir’s 11 after-school Neighborhood Choir Programs. These programs provide beginning and intermediate choral training to over 900 children throughout the city while building community pride and stewardship in each singer. Members of the Beverly Neighborhood Choir range in age from 8-16 and rehearse twice weekly. Select singers have recently performed in Dead Man Walking and La bohème at Lyric Opera of Chicago and Bernstein’s MASS at Ravinia Festival. Recent tours have included Alabama, Los Angeles and Indianapolis.

About Heather Stewart, Conductor

Heather Stewart joined Chicago Children’s Choir in 2018 and brought with her a decade of diverse music teaching experiences motivated by her love of music and interest in its transformative powers in education. Originally focused on a career in music performance, in college, Ms. Stewart quickly discovered music’s potential to impact children’s abilities to learn and empathize with others, and to promote a more peaceful society. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She then went on to utilize her three distinct certifi cations in instrumental, choral, and general music education in public and private school settings in Wisconsin, Northern Virginia, and Texas.

Over the course of her experiences in many diff erent music teaching roles, Ms. Stewart realized her distinct passion for choral music education and decided to pursue an advanced degree in this area. She earned her Master of Music Education degree in 2018 from Northwestern University with special concentrations in voice and choral conducting.

While at Northwestern, Ms. Stewart sang in the University Chorale under the direction of Grammy-winning conductor Donald Nally. She also assisted in the research eff orts of the late Dr. Steve Demorest, who wrote prolifi cally about the negative eff ects of “talent-mindset” on the realities that everyone can benefi t from singing and that everyone can learn to sing accurately. Ms. Stewart was also highly infl uenced by the creativity research of Dr. Maud Hickey and the guidance of Dr. Sarah Bartolome. Reminded of her previous experiences as an autism therapist and special needs specialist, Ms. Stewart took great joy and pride in her work as the conductor of the Northwestern AMASE Community Choir.

Ms. Stewart continues her devotion to uniting diverse youth through music education in her daily work with Chicago Children’s Choir. Heather conducts the Garfi eld Park/Off the Street Club Choir, Beverly Neighborhood Choir, and various In-School Choir programs.

Outside of Chicago Children’s Choir, Ms. Stewart enjoys exploring Chicago with her husband and two daughters, Amelia and Evelyn. She serves as policy writer for the Committee for Equity and Minority Achievement (CEMA), a school board advisory committee for District 102, where her oldest daughter goes to school.

About Michaela Bateman, Conductor

New Mexico native Michaela Bateman currently serves as a conductor for the Chicago Children’s Choir In-School Program. A professional vocalist, conductor and music educator, she recently graduated from the University of New Mexico with a dual bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Vocal Performance.

While at the University of New Mexico, Michaela served as a Theodore Presser scholar, Brabson scholar with the UNM Children’s Chorus and Greenleaf Music Ministry Intern for all St. John’s United Methodist Church music programs. She was an active ACDA chapter collegiate offi cer and has sung with many choral ensembles as both a soloist and an ensemble member, including UNM’s Concert Choir, Symphony Orchestra, UNM Opera Theater (in various roles), University Chorus, Las Cantantes, Dolce Suono (conductor and accompanist), and Chamber Singers, where she made her New Mexico Philharmonic soloist debut in Handel’s Dixit Dominus. Her student teaching experiences saw her teach general music and band at Martin Luther King Jr., and conduct award winning choral ensembles from Rio Rancho High School at State competition.

Michaela began her musical journey in high school at 15, when she decided to fi nally take voice lessons after 7 years of vocal nodule recovery. It was there that she fell in love with musical theater and has since performed with multiple companies such as Albuquerque Little Theater, where she was nominated for a Vivian Vance Award for her portrayal of Maria in Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story and won for her portrayal of Tuptim in The King and I. She also found a love of music and performing through competitive fi gure skating and coaching, which she has done now for 15 years. Michaela is so thrilled to join Chicago Children’s Choir and fully supports their mission and core values of education, excellence and expression.
