Ten Reasons Why I Love Synagogues…And Why You Should Too Synagogues are struggling these days – you know it as well as I do, and the statistics bear it out. Throughout the country, synagogue affiliation rates are down; per capita dues contributions are down; participation among affiliated members are down, too. Once, synagogue life was a priority for large swaths of the population. Once, synagogue usually trumped soccer. Now, far more often, it’s the other way around. It shouldn’t be this way. The synagogue is a wonderful institution – one that’s certainly worth preserving. Yes, I know I’m a Jewish professional, so you might think I’m paid to say this. In fact, I am paid to say these things, but that’s not the point. In this case I really believe it. Here are ten reasons that synagogues are important: 1. You can’t do Judaism alone. You need a minyan of at least ten Jews to fulfill your worship obligations. Minyans tend to grow into congregations, congregations build buildings, and those buildings are called synagogues. 2. Jews should be visible in the general community, and institutions such as synagogues are the best way there is for that to happen. 3. Jews should turn to rabbis for learning and wisdom, and rabbis need salaries, and Jews need to gather together to raise the funds needed. (A personal plug? Of course. But I’d say this even if I wasn’t receiving one of those salaries myself). 4. Pickled herring. I love the stuff, and in my experience, it’s more readily available and oneg shabbats and kiddush luncheons than anywhere else. 5. Community. Life can be lonely these days. It’s nice to be around other people. Physically. It’s especially nice to be around my own people – Jews. 6. Learning. Here we are, right next to an academic institution teaching tens of thousands of students, and if I’m not mistaken, there are more Jewish learning options at Baton Rouge’s synagogues than there are at LSU. There’s a lot to learn in our tradition, and the synagogue is the best place I know to learn it. 7. Tikkun Olam. As Jews we are supposed to repair the world. That’s a big job, and it’s easier to do with others. 8. History.

In this case I really believe it.Here are ten reasons that synagogues are important:

1. You can’t do Judaism alone. You need a minyan of at least ten Jews to fulfill your worship obligations. Minyans tend to grow into congregations, congregations build buildings, and those buildings are called synagogues.2. Jews should be visible in the general community, and institutions such as synagogues are the best way there is for that to happen.3. WHY BE JEWISHA new year is upon us, and hopefully you have had a chance to reflect, but also a chance to consider your life, your plans in the World, and thinking ahead. What does Judaism offer you? In “Judaism 10 Best Ideas” by Arthur Green, which almost sounds like it could be a Ken Burns PBS documentary or one of David Letterman’s top 10 Lists, he looks at ten top reasons for Judaism. But it is serious. I choose to discuss number ten, “EHAD” Hear O Israel… there is only one. Isn’t the idea that we were created in God’s image? All beings were created in God’s image. Mr. Green states that seeing the amazement of such a divine gift is the beginning of faith. So to be religious and to recognize God, is to act for God. It is to recognize that we are all from the divine presence. There is only one God; there is no other being.

The President’s CornerWe must find God’s presence in what we do, what we think, and who we are. If we recognize God’s oneness, and the divineness from God, then we have a much clearer view of our own job on Earth, of our relationship with others, and of our respect for one another. As stated, “Look around you, look within, open your eyes. Find God’s presence in each and every creature and in the unified transforming vision of all that is. That is what it means to belong to Israel, the people who struggle with God”.Let us all remember that we and those around us are God’s creatures. We are here to do God’ work. In this year, let’s pledge to remember our covenant with God and God’s respect and love for us and that God desires us to love others.Dale Maas

From the South Pacific to south Louisiana, Shabaka Gibson traveled the globe to work in Baton Rouge. He brought his wife Michaelyn and 22 month-old son Curtis for this current adventure working in public and governmental affairs for ExxonMobil. Here for barely a year, Shabaka found Beth Shalom Synagogue and took an active role by developing the online congregational survey. In getting to know this delightful family, you are treated to an interesting geographical and historical story . Though native to Arkansas, Shabaka grew up in Michigan, graduated from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and worked at his first job as an economic developer. He became City Manager of Stevensville, MI while in the Army Reserves for ten years. In 2007, he enrolled in the

University of Chicago’s Master of Public Policy program on an academic scholarship. Shabaka joined ExxonMobil after graduating from UChicago and was eventually sent to Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 2010, where he met his future wife.Michaelyn, from PNG now an independent nation originally settled by Germans and British, grew up speaking three native dialects and English, one of three official languages of the island. She was raised in the Anglican church, one of which she attends in Baton Rouge. Michaelyn went to boarding school in New Zealand and graduated from Massey University there in business and information systems.

We are now in our second month of our 2015-2016 school year. In September, our children and staff enjoyed celebrating Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot. We also hosted open house on September 17th at 7:00PM. Parents were able to interact with our staff and learn more about our school procedures and learning environments. During the month of October, we will be learning about Kol Nidre, Simchat Torah, Noah’s Ark, nutrition, story elements (who?, what?, when?, where?, and why?), ABCs and 123s, Jewish values, celebrations and music, and colors and shapes. These themes will be explored not only through the stories and lessons at circle time but also through song, dance, art, and even experiments. On October 8th, we’ll receive a visit from Abilities where they will conduct a speech and hearing screening. We will also have school pictures with Amy K’s Photography the week of October 12th-15th. We will also host our school wide picnic on October 21st with our parents on the playground. The Rayner Learning Center will be closed on October 5th and 6th in observation of Shemini Atzeret Yizkor and Simchat Torah.Todah RabbahRabbi Glickman, Steven Winkler, Rayner Learning Center Board, Cathy Melanson, Jeffrey Dubinsky

in Louisiana since the 1750s, in the United States since the 1650s, and in the world since the 70s (not the 1970s, just the plain ol’ 70s). Why stop now? Is it possible that our predecessors were onto something? If so, let’s give the synagogue a chance and figure out what that “something” might have been.9. Unclickableness. Synagogue communities are not like online communities. In online communities, when you don’t like someone, you can just click them away into electronic oblivion. Here at the synagogue, however, it doesn’t work that way. Here, we are part of a community both with people we like and people we don’t. And when people we don’t like come along, we need to figure out a way to get along with them anyway. I think that’s a good skill to have.10. God. I can’t help but think that God wants and needs us Jews to come together to create sacred synagogue communities as one way of helping “The Plan” work out. When we do it right, synagogues bear a hint of the world as it should be. When we do it right, what a wonderful institution it truly is.

Shalom y’all We recently went to Institute at Jacob’s Camp and it was a huge success! We had 11 out of the 37 BARFTY members come and won most spirited TYG! We’re so excited to take our spirit with us to Fall Conclave in Jackson, MS on November 13-15! We hope to see more BARFTY members there! We are now starting our preparations for Spring Conclave that is to be held right here in Baton Rouge! There will be lots of teens coming in, and we ask that if you are available and willing to house a few of them, you let us know! It would be a great help! Also, if you are willing to donate food for the different dinners and lunches there will be throughout the weekend please contact me! There is lots to be done and we could really use your help if you are willing! If you are interested in helping out with conclave in any other way please contact me! Our next BaRFTY event is on October 3 and will be our Sukkot event! It will be held that afternoon at the Hoffman’s house. You are all invited, and we would love to see you there! Finally, a big thank you to all who donated to our annual food drive! Sincerely, Eliana Levy (CVP)

Rabbi’s Message (con’t) How do you imagine these two individuals from such far-flung places managed to cross paths? As it turned out, Michaelyn was working in PNG when she was designated to represent her boss at a large conference. She was required to be accompanied by someone in public and government affairs. That turned out to be Shabaka. While riding the company bus, a progressively loud argument on recycling ensued. Shabaka later emailed Michaelyn with an offer to continue the debate. This became a date and led to marriage. They hope to move back to PNG for a short while, where Michaelyn wants to ‘give back’ to the island’s economic development.Shabaka started Judaic studies in Virginia in 2009 and completed them with Rabbi Gardner this year. He has been an ultra-marathoner and loves to cook, particularly recipes found on the Internet. Michaelyn is awaiting final green card approval and can not legally work until then. So she is enjoying her time as a full-time mom. She likes to cook and bake, desserts like Pavlovas.Curtis, who is named for Shabaka’s grandfather, will attend Rayner Center this fall.We extend a warm welcome to the Gibsons to our Beth Shalom community.

RegaRding Hospital Visits

Our Rabbi is eager to keep in touch with members of the congregation who are in the hospital or recuperating at home. As recent legislation prevents hospitals from circulating patient’s names, we rely on you to call the synagogue office and let us know when you, a family member or friend are in the hospital and would welcome a visit from Rabbi Glickman.

May He who blessed our ancestors grant all who are ill

a complete and speedy recovery.Bill Emmich
