TEMPLE NEWS

From the Rabbi There are so many events and celebrations that occur in November and December, both at our synagogue and in our homes. I wonder if the significance of Chanukah gets lost or overlooked amidst all the fanfare. Chanukah commemorates an incredibly important historical and religious event that should not be forgotten.

The reason behind the gifts, the dreidels, the latkas and even the menorah, is the fact that Chanukah celebrates the Jews winning a war—fought over religious freedom. Some say that the war that Judah and his army (the Maccabbees) fought against the Greeks was the first ideological war in history!

About 2,200 years ago, Antiochus, the ruler of the Seleucid Empire, tried to integrate Jews into the Greek religion and the Greek way of life, a process known as Hellenization. During that time, Hellenization was successfully sweeping across Europe, Asia and Africa. At first, the efforts at Hellenizing the Jews were no different than in other places: using non-violent and persuasive techniques to win people over. The Greek styles were seen as fun and trendy. Some Jews adapted to this new, Greek way of life by changing their clothing and hairstyles to match that of the Greeks. Soon after, these same Jews found themselves learning about Greek religion and culture, which included praying to Greek gods and participating in immoral hedonistic behavior.

Meanwhile, other Jews were not responding so well to the changes and the lures of this pagan culture. These Jews saw that these changes in culture would affect the future of Judaism and could lead to its destruction. They began to organize an effort to keep more Jews from becoming Hellenized. This led to tension and “civil unrest” in the Jewish community. Antiochus became aware of this heated situation and chose to abandon the usual passive approach for a more aggressive solution to Hellenizing the Jews of Israel.

Antiochus then ordered two decrees that would change history. He ordered the desecration of the Temple in Jerusalem by placing idols in it and by sacrificing pigs on the altar. Next, he forbade the weekly reading of Torah. For many Jews, including some of those who fell for the Greek way of life, things had gone too far. It was clear to most, that if left unchecked, this would lead to the end of Judaism. The time was right for the Jews to do something unprecedented: wage a war in order to defend their religious rights.

After an intense battle, history records that the Jews won the war and were able to reclaim the Temple, light the menorah and return to the public reading of Torah. Yet, the greatest victory of that moment, and what we should celebrate during the holiday of Chanukah, was that our people were willing to fight and risk their lives to preserve morality, education and faith in one God.

Maybe the best way to celebrate Chanukah is to be ready to stand up for and fight for what we know is right.

So, I leave you with two Chanukah questions: For whom are we responsible? To whom are we responsible?

If you are inclined to answer these questions in writing, I would love to read what you write. My email is [email protected].

Happy November and December Holidays (especially Chanukah)!

B’Shalom, Rabbi Todd Chizner

TEMPLE NEWS

Cantor’s Song As the New Year begins, we start to read the Torah once again. The second portion of the Torah is Noah. We are told that Noah was commanded by God to gather pairs of every type of creature on earth in order to save them from the impending flood and to repopulate the earth once the floodwaters receded. The importance of animals in the cycle of life was established at the very beginning, and indeed, Judaism has given us rules as to their treatment as early as the Bible itself. In Exodus chapter 20 verse 8, the fourth commandment, “Remember the Sabbath Day” tells us that for 6 days we must labor; however, on the 7th day, everyone in the household, including the animals, must rest.

It has taken philosophers thousands of years to conclude on whether or not animals have rights of existence and protection, as well as whether they have feelings and experience loneliness and neglect. It took thousands of years, and the debate still goes on as to whether or not humans have a moral duty to treat them kindly and set down rules for their humane treatment.

Thousands of years ago, the Torah laid down the law as to the relationship between man and beast. The Torah tells us that, in the beginning, when God created all living creatures, God placed the animal kingdom under the dominion of man. Man was given permission to use animals to help him plow the fields and provide wool for clothing. However, meat eating was not permitted. Only after the flood, was man given permission to kill animals for food to enhance his life. God also gave strict rules, that even in the case of need, animals should be handled with the least amount of pain and as humanely as possible. Indeed, more than 3300 years ago, the Torah set down laws regarding the treatment of animals (tza’ar ba’alei chaim).

Here are a few of them:

The Torah forbids the cutting of a piece of meat from a living animal. This law is actually universal and does not apply only to Jews.

Animals belonging to Jews must be allowed to rest on the Sabbath. This law is stated in the 10 Commandments.

The Torah requires a Jew to help unload an overburdened pack animal as quickly as possible even if that animal belongs to a bad person or an enemy.

An ox and a donkey may not be harnessed together, as they are of unequal strength and one would have to work harder than the other.

According to the rabbinic scholar Maimonides, a cow and her calf may not be slaughtered on the same day or in the presence of one another, as attachments exist among animals and they may suffer.

Interestingly enough, Judaism has always recognized the link between the ways a person treats animals and the way a person treats human beings. A person who is cruel to a defenseless animal will undoubtedly be cruel to a helpless person. Modern psychology confirms this understanding with many studies finding a relationship between childhood animal cruelty and adult criminal violence. Sadly, those who love animals do not always value human life. Adolf Hitler reportedly was a lover of animals.

As with all animals, domesticated especially, their requirements for care can be time consuming and require much planning and sometimes great expense. We are required to feed our pets before ourselves and make arrangements for their care at all times. Having a pet is a wonderful way to encourage our children to think about the feelings of others, and sharing in the care of a family pet helps develop responsibility.

As many of you know, animals are a passion of mine. I have two huge dogs, five indoor cats and a wild cat that gave birth to five kittens in my backyard two winters ago. (I will tell that story another time) Without them, my life would not be filled with as much laughter and sweetness, and I certainly benefit from all the exercise I get from walking them rain or shine. Their constant love is a blessing, and the snores of contentment center me and bring me peace. In keeping with the words of God, “His mercies extend to all His creatures” (Psalm 145; 9).

Please give your pet a big hug for me!!!

B’shalom, Cantor Abbe

TEMPLE NEWS

Message from the President

We have a lot of events in November and December where I hope to see you all!

I am looking forward to our “Glitz and Jeans Gala” on Saturday, November 15 at 8:00 pm, where we can all celebrate Temple Judea with dancing, gaming, trying to win spectacular prizes and raffles, and of course eating and drinking!

We also have our “Divas on the Bima” Cantorial Concert on Sunday, December 7 at 6:30 pm. We are featuring Cantor Sher and four guest cantors. We had a full house at our last cantorial concert so please save the date and bring your friends and family. This is open to the whole community!

I truly look forward to your joining us on one of our committees and/or arms of the temple in some of the planning of temple activities. There are so many vehicles for your doing so. There is a separate page in this bulletin with the names of our chairs and their email addresses so that you can contact them directly. Many of our committees are multi-generational and all would like your participation and your help.

Our Adult Education Committee, chaired by Jack Rubenstein, includes some new members who are experienced in running programs and workshops in this field and have fresh ideas. Our Membership Committee, chaired by Erik Groothuis and Jay Berger, is continuing to plan a lot of events this year to bring together new and established members so all may feel connected and valued. Please join us at our Barnes and Noble event on Sunday, November 23, which is an example of our temple family working together to share all that we do at Temple Judea with the community. Our fundraising committee, chaired by Amy Maharam, also has several new members and has already planned some innovative, exciting events that we can all attend while simultaneously raising significant funds for our temple.

Our committees and arms of our temple join with other committees and sometimes other temples to broaden participation. They also work with our Website Chair, Peter Heilbrun, and our Publicity Chair, Phyllis Wininger, to reach out in the community to inform others about all that is going on at Temple Judea and to invite their involvement. Phyllis Wininger makes sure pictures are taken at every event and then writes articles that are published in the newspapers weekly, so make sure you smile when you see Phyllis! Peter Heilbrun then uploads all of our events on our website.

On November 11, our Sisterhood of Women of Reform Judaism, with its President, Kathi Kafka, is having a talk by Rabbi Chizner on “Spiritual Being: Nurturing the Seed of the Divine within Each of Us.” On November 17 at 7:00 pm, WRJ is having The Pampered Chef cooking demonstration and shopping. December 2 at 7:30 pm, we are having a Color, Clothes and Style presentation. For our Hanukkah celebration, please join us on Friday, December 19 at 6:00 pm, for Latkes, Wine and Cheese with Shabbat services to follow.

Our Brotherhood with its President, Stanley Goldklang, is also planning events open to the whole temple, and often, the whole community. Our Caring Committee, chaired by Michael Wininger, is there for those in need. Our Israel Committee, chaired by Marilyn Bender and Lauren Chizner, continues to keep us all informed about the latest developments in and affecting Israel. Our Family Connection, chaired by Janet Keller and Ali Pritti, now includes new members with younger children and brings them together with those already connected. Our Greatest Generation committee, chaired by Bea Gerstein, continues to be a source of stimulating programs for the 60 and older set but has attracted younger members as well. We also have a home for those who fall between as the Baby Boomers, chaired by Joyce Rubenstein and Henry Levy, get together for educational trips, Broadway shows, and purely social evenings. We also now have a Singles Committee! Contact Jerry Perelman or Sharon Daniels—they are just forming the Singles Committee and would love your participation. Derrick Rubin donates his time and attends to all our legal matters, and Richard Kashinsky and Michael Wininger keep our House in order by ensuring that repairs and other maintenance are taken care of.

We also need you to spread the word in our community so that we can all pitch in to bring in new members. Our Religious School program, aptly entitled “Journeys,” is designed to build community, offer Jewish family experiences, provide opportunities for Social Action, and link Jewish learning with Jewish practice. We have small group Hebrew tutorials with the teachers and Rabbi and Cantor. I am writing this so that you can be as excited as I am when you talk to your neighbors and friends—I know those of you who have grandchildren can spread the word to their parents. Families come together here at Temple Judea to participate in Jewish experiences like Shabbat dinners, learning sessions about the holidays, and participating in community service. Our families with school age children will be participating alongside those of us who have raised our children here. This program was developed by our Religious School Educator, Lauren Resnikoff, the Education Chairs, Kathi Kafka and Mollie Mandell, and the entire Education Committee.

Join our Volunteer Choir, chaired by Tod Groman, and attend some of our Adult Ed classes. Our Social Action Committee Chairs, Alicia Munves and Rita Marcus, would love to have you participate in a project. Social action weekend is from November 14–November 16, and all ages are participating in different ways. Please look for the Social Action collections for those in need—we are now collecting gently used or new winter clothing.

Please check our website temple-judea.com for the wealth of information about our temple—our history, clergy, and all the up to date information on all of our services and events. You can also contribute to Temple Judea by initiating your shopping from Amazon on our temple website. Build your cart on our website! 5% of all your purchases will be donated to Temple Judea at no extra cost to you. Tell your friends and family!

We would love it if you would do one more thing to increase your connection to our temple. Join me in prayer on Friday nights. I will personally greet you, and on Saturday mornings, when our board members also will greet you. I promise you that whatever you choose, we will welcome you with open arms, and I will personally greet you as will many of our members. You will be glad you did!!

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Chanukah from my family to yours!

SISTERHOOD OF WRJ NEWS

This year, November again becomes the exclusive province of the joyous holiday of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah returns to its rightful place in December. While 2013 allowed us to enjoy both wonderful holidays simultaneously; we can look forward to two months of fun with family and friends this year.

Celebrating thanks and miracles sounds great to me. I would like to share with you how it reflects on our Sisterhood of WRJ at Temple Judea. We thank our wonderful members for their time, dedication and enthusiasm for our group and our Temple family. We reflect on the miracles of interpersonal relationships that foster personal growth while supporting the Temple we love and respect. Please allow me to list just some of what we have accomplished up to this point. In September, we had a program on Israel Today. Lauren Chizner presented a very eye-opening and informative program on the battle that Israel has been facing and continues to face. This is the first of many Israel programs to follow. We also had our first Ladies Night Out Dinner Series. We had a delicious dinner at Mim’s, shopped from our stylish vendors, and got to catch up with each other while welcoming newer Sisterhood members! In October, we participated in the Lord and Taylor fundraiser event. We also hosted our author presentation that we are partnered with the through JCC and the Jewish Book Council. Rebecca Alexander, author of Not Fade Away was the presenter.

On November 11 at 8:00 pm, we are thankful that Rabbi Chizner will be giving a talk to the Sisterhood and entire Temple family on “Spiritual Being.” This is not to be missed. On November 17 at 7:00 pm, we are having The Pampered Chef demonstration and shopping. Then, on December 2 at 7:30 pm, we are having a Color, Clothes and Style presentation. For our Hanukkah celebration, please join us on Friday, December 19 at 6:00 pm for Latkes, Wine and Cheese, with Friday services to follow.

Please remember that our Judaica shop has beautiful gifts from Israel. We have everything from jewelry to gifts for the bar/bat Mitzvah child to menorahs, mezuzahs and baby gifts. Did you know that you can place a yarmulke order through Sisterhood for your upcoming simcha? All of the contact information is listed in the Judaica showcase in the lobby and on the temple Website.

If you aren’t a member of Sisterhood but wish to explore that possibility, please always feel free to talk with me, or any of our members. My email is: [email protected]. We embrace everyone!

It’s because of this great group of women working together that makes our Sisterhood what it is!

My family and I wish you a joyous Thanksgiving and Happy Hanukkah.

B’Shalom, “Stronger Together” Kathi Kafka President of Sisterhood of WRJ

BROTHERHOOD NEWS

The New Year got off to an early start for Brotherhood as we joined with WRJ-Sisterhood to sponsor a Shabbat Under the Stars dinner on August 1. That meal followed a Wedding Anniversary Celebration Shabbat service coordinated by the temple’s Membership Committee. Anyone who attended will attest to how special that evening was.

Immediately following the High Holidays, Brotherhood hosted (along with Family Connection and WRJ-Sisterhood) our annual Sukkot Barbeque on Sunday, October 5. Food—including burgers and hot dogs grilled by our experienced experts Joel Laxer and Michael Wininger—and entertainment were available. The adults “schmoozed” while the children, many of whom had attended a Journeys program earlier that morning, completed crafts projects in the sukkah and played in the Castle Funhouse bouncer.

Brotherhood held a breakfast planning meeting on September 21, during which time exciting potential programs for the upcoming year were discussed. In addition, Joel Laxer and I have begun to attend meetings of the Long Island Council of Men of Reform Judaism, which meets during alternate months. We have been impressed by the dedication of many of the men in attendance, but we also have learned a great deal about how we might enhance the functioning of our Brotherhood—including new programs—so it better meets the needs of our members and our temple community.

We are looking forward to a four-course dinner at La Baraka in late October. Dates and specific topics are also being set for another presentation by a technology consultant who was well-received last year and for a speaker who lectures widely about Middle Eastern affairs. With several other social and charitable activities coming through the pipeline as well, this year promises to be another successful one for Brotherhood of Temple Judea.

Our Religious School students are off on their “Journeys.” Here are some highlights from our September Back to School Shabbat Dinner & Service:

In addition, our families enjoyed learning about the holiday of Sukkot and enjoyed decorating the Sukkah. Thank you to Brotherhood and Family Connection for sponsoring our wonderful, fun-filled Sukkot BBQ and thank you to Sisterhood for the delicious salad.

SOCIAL ACTION NEWS

Social Action Weekend! Save the Dates…November 14–16...and your Winter Coats and Sweaters! Begin the weekend on November 14 at 8 PM: Social Action Shabbat Temple Judea will be hosting a speaker from JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Opportunities). This is an amazing organization whose mission is to care for abused and neglected children within the Jewish community. (Yes, they do exist!) Please come to services on November 14 to hear more about JAFCO. We guarantee that you will be moved and inspired! And, we will be launching a project to provide very special Chanukah gifts for the JAFCO kids. November 15-16: VOLUNTEER FOR THE NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS COAT DRIVE! Temple Judea is once again participating in a community-wide collection and distribution of winter clothing. Please deposit your coats, hats, sweaters, scarves gloves and blankets in the box in the lobby. Children’s apparel is especially needed!

You can volunteer to sort the clothing on Saturday November 15 or help in distributing the clothing and food to those in need in Glen Cove on November 16. Our religious school children will be making sandwiches and preparing snack bags on Sunday morning. Temple Judea will be participating in this event with members of TANS (Tikkun Alliance of the North Shore). The gratitude of those for whom warm clothing is a luxury is hard to measure. Those who have volunteered for this project in past years know what a special experience it is! To volunteer, please contact: Rita Marcus at [email protected] or Alicia Munves at 627-5998. Hunger on Long Island Our congregation has generously responded to our notices about the shortage of food at local food pantries, particularly the INN and the FEGS food pantry. We have made several deliveries of the non-perishable foods that have been collected in the basket in the lobby of the synagogue. Please continue to make these contributions when you come to the temple. It is a meaningful way to help those who truly need our help!

Many organizations also take perishable foods. Don't let your leftovers go to waste! Do you have extra food from a celebration or untouched food from a house of mourning? See The Food Recovery Page in the bulletin for names of organizations where you can deliver the food. High Holy Days Food Drive Once again we collected a truckload of food at our annual High Holy Days Food Drive. Empty grocery bags, once again generously donated by Holiday Farms, were handed out to the congregation on Rosh Hashanah. On Yom Kippur, congregants returned the bags filled with non-perishable food that was delivered to the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Adopt-A-Family We are continuing to assist our Jewish Adopt-A- Family. Thanks to our wonderful shoppers and the generosity of our congregants we provide the family of five with much needed groceries each month. The mom in our family has suffered a stroke and can no longer work, and the dad is out of work and struggling to find a new job so he can take care of his wife and family. If you want to assist this family, please send a contribution to Temple Judea with Adopt-A-Family in the memo. Even $5 can make a difference! Thanksgiving Project As we do every year, we shop for the “fixings” for side dishes for Thanksgiving dinners for the less fortunate in our local communities. We work with the Manhasset/Great Neck Economic Opportunity Council.

HOLOCAUST RESOURCE CENTER UPDATE On the first Day of Rosh Hashanah, the New York Times published a most scathing opinion piece on the status of the State of Israel and the great majority of its Jewish people. After reading and re-reading the article, I was sure it was a propaganda piece by Hamas or an article about the evil Jewish Israelis resembling Nazi Germany. I was wrong! It was written by a Jewish Israeli journalist living in Jaffa.

The title of the article, “How Israel Silences Dissent,” by Mairav Zonszein should have given me a clue. In a country where there are more diverse opinions on every subject than people who tend to express their opinions freely, “silence” is not how one would characterize the Israeli population; “noisy, opinionated, and argumentative” would be a much better description.

Miss Zonszein’s “Opinion Piece” in the New York Times states:

“…On July 12, four days after the latest war in Gaza began, hundreds of Israelis gathered in central Tel Aviv to protest the killing of civilians on both sides and call for an end to the siege of Gaza and the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. They chanted, “Jews and Arabs refuse to be enemies.”

Hamas had warned that it would fire a barrage of rockets at central Israel after 9 p.m., and it did.

But the injuries suffered in Tel Aviv that night stemmed not from rocket fire, but from a premeditated assault by a group of extremist Israeli Jews. Chanting “Death to Arabs” and “Death to leftists,” they attacked protesters with clubs…

The vilification of the few Israelis who don’t subscribe to right-wing doctrine is not new. Similar acts of incitement occurred before the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995. But now they have multiplied, escalated and spread…

The aggressive silencing of anyone who voices disapproval of Israeli policies or expresses empathy with Palestinians is the latest manifestation of an us-versus-them mentality that has been simmering for decades. It is based on the narrative that Palestinians are enemies who threaten Jewish sovereignty and are solely to blame for the failure to achieve peace…

This has allowed the us-versus-them mentality to bleed into Israeli Jewish society. “Us” no longer refers to any Jewish citizen, and “them” to any Palestinian. Now, “us” means all those who defend the status quo of occupation and settlement expansion, including many Christian evangelicals and Republicans in America. And “them” means anyone who tries to challenge that status quo, whether a rabbi, a dissenting Israeli soldier or the president of the United States…

In their attempt to juggle being both Jewish and democratic, most Israelis are choosing the former at the expense of the latter…”

It seems that Miss Zonszein is accusing the Israeli government policies and the behavior of the Israeli Jews for the conflict. In the last sentence, she is also suggesting that as long as the Jews want Israel to be a Jewish State it cannot be a democracy.

While Miss Zonszein is entitled to her opinion, she cannot create her own facts and certainly as a journalist she should review the history of the conflict which began before the Jewish State was even born. The land that we refer to as Palestine was a Jewish State, renamed by the Romans “Palestina” and occupied by the Greeks, Romans, Muslims, Christians, Turks and finally the British in 1917. The Jews were and are the indigenous people of Eretz Israel.

On the second issue, the publication of the “Opinion Piece” in the New York Times is what is most troublesome. As we have witnessed over the days of the Operation Protective Shield, the world media has been not only unfair to Israel but downright dishonest. Anti-Semitism has escalated throughout Europe and the world. This “Opinion Piece” simply reinforces their anti-Israel/anti-Semitic propaganda. These types of articles put the idea of Israel’s legitimacy into question in the minds of the American public.

An Israeli left wing academic’s comment to the “Opinion Piece” is most cogent:

“The simple fact is, a lot of the media, and a lot of academia, and a lot of NGOs and civil society in Israel lean left, and sometimes far left. We have ways of expressing ourselves, and we did express ourselves. I was not intimidated. The thugs did not keep me away from the demonstrations, and did not make me too fearful to bring my kids along. If we’re honest, the dozen right-wing bullies shouting threats infuriated lots of us, but they intimidated no one. Leftist Israelis may not have shown as much anguish or empathy as Zonszein thinks we should have. But that was not because we were aggressively silenced. Perhaps we were too silent, but not because we were silenced.”

To Miss Zonszein: Stop whining to the Times and convince the Israeli people of the correctness of your ideas rather than give the enemies of our people ammunition to hate us and destroy us.

we have the pleasure of welcoming

Philippe Karsenty who will speak about

Winning the Media Battle: Fighting the Same Propaganda Machine that Jews Faced in 1938

Philippe Karsenty, deputy mayor of Neuilly, a Paris suburb, is best known for sta nding up to France 2 TV Channel when they reported a hoax story about Mohamed al Dura, an Arab boy they c laimed the Israeli army killed. Despite all the pieces of evidence Karsenty brought to the courts in France, he was found guilty of defamation by the court of appeals in Paris on June 26, 2013, for having told the truth about this modern blood -libel. He has now appealed to the French Supreme Court to have this verdict annulled. Karsenty is traveling across the USA to expose the truth and get the strong support he needs for the next steps of this historical battle.

FAMILY CONNECTION NEWS

We hope that you are enjoying the Fall season! September was very busy with back to school and Rosh Hashanah! Our first event of the school year, the annual Sukkot BBQ, was jointly sponsored with Brotherhood. Very special thanks to Kathi Kafka, Sisterhood President, and Sisterhood for the lovely salad and their participation in the event, and thanks to Lauren Resnikoff, Education Director, for her help in putting together such a great event. It was so special to have everyone get together, including the Rabbi, Cantor, families of religious school children, congregants and community members of all ages. Dr. Stan Goldklang, Brotherhood President, and fellow Brotherhood members grilled a delicious lunch. The children loved playing in the “bounce house. ” Family Connection members, the teachers and Lauren Resnikoff helped the children decorate the Sukkah with the decorations they made. The beautiful Sukkah and the smiling faces of the children certainly made this a memorable event and a great way to start off the school year. In addition to reconnecting with temple friends and teachers from the religious school, we were also happy to welcome new families.

The Family Sukkot Service was held in October. Rabbi Chizner and Cantor Sher led the services, discussed the holiday and meaning of Sukkot, and encouraged everyone to shake the lulav and smell the fragrant etrog. The festivities continued afterwards in the [aforementioned beautifully decorated] Sukkah, where the blessings for sitting in the Sukkah were recited.

We are looking forward to a fun Veterans Day get together at Muddworks. After enjoying the Journeys program that Lauren Resnikoff has planned, bring the kids to Great Neck so they can create their own artwork on a piece of pottery and then help make a piece to be displayed at the temple. We will have a pizza lunch, too. Please RSVP as soon as possible and send a $30 check to the attention of “Family Connection” at the Temple to reserve your spot. High School Religious School students, let Lauren Resnikoff and us know if you would like to volunteer at this event for community service credit.

Family Connection will also participate in the wonderful Hanukah events that are planned, including the candles and latkes program.

Please let us know if you would like to help out or if you would like to have further information about these events.

TEMPLE-JUDEA.COM WEBSITE REPORT

Please continue to go to www.temple-judea.com and click on on the right column of the Home Page to fill your cart to purchase items. 5% of all purchases will be “donated” by Amazon to Temple Judea at no cost to you. Our temple Website is filled with information about all aspects of our temple. We continue to add pictures of past events and highlight upcoming events. If you have a question for the Rabbi, this would be an excellent way to raise it. Rabbi will respond to you personally, and with your consent, your question and his response will be posted in the Rabbi's Blog (with your name or anonymously, as you direct). If you have any suggestions for temple lay or religious leadership, we have an electronic suggestion box and look forward to your thoughts. We are a temple family and continuously strive to improve and meet the needs of all our members. If you are interested in the weekly Torah reading, we have a link under “Worship.” Religious School and Community and Groups sections contain a wealth of information about their events and programs. Significant developments since our last newsletter include:

· We have added a “Bulletin Board” section to the Website to highlight new content. · We have added password protected form functionality, so if you are a member of a committee or project,

the use of this feature would benefit your team. Just provide the details to [email protected] for their assistance.

· We are now using the Internet to promote Temple Judea to the communities around us. We have a grant from Google for Non Profits and have run three Google AdWords campaigns: one for membership, one for Hebrew school enrollment and one to promote our September Selichot service, where the Holocaust Resource Center of Temple Judea presented the professional Holocaust video that they have just produced. When keywords in a Google query match our campaign, the Google search results provide a link to our Website where we have a targeted promotion page. We can create new campaigns to promote any future events we target.

· As part of Google for Non- Profits, Temple Judea now has its own YouTube channel. Videos we post can be easily accessed from our Website. We have posted the Introduction section of the Holocaust video and the entire video, and look forward to adding more videos you have or may shoot in the future, if in high definition, good quality and appropriate for inclusion. Any temple member gifted in creating online videos and wishing to participate in a video project would be a welcomed permanent or temporary addition to the Website team.

We continue to look for opportunities to enhance our Website and welcome your ideas and participation.

Thank you,

Peter Heilbrun, Website Chair

The Website Committee is looking for new members. I f you are creative, have technology skills, marketing and/or business acumen, and wish to be part of a dynamic and evolving aspect of our temple, please contact Peter Heilbrun at 516-621-6169 or [email protected]. Primary responsibility will be to strategize on how to make our Website more responsive to our members and be a tool to reach out to new membership for our temple and religious school. I f you have the desire, you can also learn/participate in maintaining the site.
