Chronicle readers’ picks for the best businesses, services, entertainment and recreation spots in Okanogan Country
By Sheila CorsonThe Chronicle
OMAK – Hard work has paid off forthe Corner Bistro after two years inbusiness, as the restaurant won the bestbusiness award for the north Okanogancountry.
Owner Sadie Cohoe said there arethree main reasons why she thinks herrestaurant, 19 E. Apple Ave., has donewell.
First, she has wonderful employees, she said. She and co-owner and mother
Deb Lantrip have nine employees. They work hard and “make our
business what it is,” Cohoe said.Second, the people who visit and like
the place well enough to vote for therestaurant make it successful. Thecustomers decide if the employees reallyare going that extra mile, she said.
Third, Cohoe said the business justhas great food.
She buys many products from localsources, such as meats from Double RRanch and goodies from Sweet RiverBakery (another Best Of winner).
Cohoe said she and husband, CraigCohoe, grow their own commercialgarden, with tomatoes and herbs tomake their own marinara for therestaurant.
Last year, the business received noawards, so Cohoe said they were reallyhoping for something this year. Havingworked so hard to build the business, she said she is grateful to hear it is doingwell.
“In this economy for our business tohave grown and flourished, I’m reallyproud,” she said.

PATEROS – Goodcustomer service comes downto a quality product - most ofsuccess in business comesdown to a quality product,Sweet River Bakery co-ownerand Manager Alex Hymersaid.
The bakery, 203 PaterosMall, was a south countrytriple winner in TheChronicle’s “Best of” listings– Best Business, BestCoffee/Espresso and BestBurgers/Pizza.
The crew bakes custombreads and pastries, servesespresso and, a year ago, added a lunchtime soup-and-sandwich menu and pizza.
But whether it’s bread orcinnamon rolls, sandwichbread or pizza in the oven, what matters is that it’s aquality product, Hymer said.
“When you make goodstuff, you’re happy to give itto customers,” he said.
Hymer said he’s got abaseline for judging quality –if he wouldn’t give it to hismom for Mother’s Day, hedoesn’t want to give it tocustomers either.
From the bread to thepizza dough, as much aspossible is made fromscratch, Hymer said. Thepizza sauce is made on site;the meat and vegetables areall sliced in the back kitchen.
“We make everythingpossible that we can make,”he said.
The meats for the pizzaand sandwiches come fromHank’s Market in Twisp. It’sall part of the effort to get thebest ingredients possible.
“Quality is key,” Hymersaid.
The effort to produce aquality product is the bestway to distinguish SweetRiver Bakery from the crowd,Hymer said. Quality, andalways striving for betterquality, is the way to attractcustomers and keep themcoming back.
Occasional innovation alsobrings in customers. SweetRiver Bakery had goodsuccess with extendedweekend hours over thesummer, serving pizza andwine, and sponsoring musicalperformances on its patiowith a view of the ColumbiaRiver.
The process isn’t alwayseasy.
“We’re a year into (servingpizza) and we’re stilllearning,” Hymer said.
The crew had extensiveexperience in making bread,so making pizzas was a logicalstep and something he’dwanted to do for a while,Hymer said. But pizza dough, like bread, is changeable.
“We still occasionally stickpizzas to the oven,” he said.“And once or twice I’vethrown a piece of (pizza)dough into the ceiling.”
Making pizza dough fromscratch includes hand-tossingit. What makes it all work is
the crew.“Everyone who works here
has just been amazing,”Hymer said.
In addition to Hymer andhis father, Al, who own thebusiness, the crew includesManager Jill Appleton,Baristas Jennifer Steere,Rachel Burke, CarinaGreenway, Catherine Perkins,Synnova Simmons andJanine Raymond, and BakersElsie and Bob Lehman, JavierSaucedo and Kris Strand.

OKANOGAN – OkanoganValley Veterinary Clinic waschosen the best veterinarian inthe south country by Chroniclereaders.
Veterinarian Gary L.Lesamiz, a Washington StateUniversity graduate, boughtthe business in 1977.
Located at 2447 Elmway, the clinic was in a house whenhe bought it and had been thepractice of M.L. Ledgerwoodsince 1947.
Lesamiz said the veterinaryfield isn’t as lucrative as it oncewas, especially since many newvets have large school loans topay off.
But his clinic has regularpatients, such as a Chihuahuabrought in by Desha Pillow lastweek.
The little dog wasscratching at her ears, and thedoctor quickly determined sheprobably had an allergy. Heprescribed some ear drops tocomfort the dog.
This particular patient had aCaesarean section and Lesamiz
said his assistants kept her twotiny puppies alive with their
own tender loving care whilehe tended to the mom.
Pillow said the puppies aredoing fine, thanks to the clinic.
