Who We Are
About UsBessemer City Schools serves approximately3,500 students in preschool through grade 12.Since its founding in 1887, BCS has worked toexemplify its motto: "Empowering StudentsThrough Excellence in Education." The systemaims for academic achievement in multiple ways,including STEM labs in all seven schools, a 1:1laptop initiative and four Pre-K programs to givestudents a strong academic start. BCS has 13National Board Certified Teachers and a robustdual-enrollment program to help students earncollege credit before graduating. All of theseinitiatives have led BCS to achieve AdvancEDdistrict accreditation. BCS also strives for success in its competitiveathletic teams, progressive performing artsprogram and robust ready-to-work program. Thesystem maintains a strong community presencethrough various ongoing partnerships with post-secondary institutions, community agencies andservice clubs, as well as solid working relationshipswith city and other government officials. All of these accomplishments are a testament to asystem that constantly works towards its missionstatement "to produce informed, responsible,productive citizens who will be lifelong learners andsuccessful contributors to society. We willaccomplish this mission in cooperation with parentsand the community, by providing a dedicated staff, adiverse and challenging curriculum, within a clean,safe and caring environment."
Located in the heart of central Alabama, Bessemer ishome to some 27,000 residents. Founded in 1887 by coalmagnate Henry DeBardeleben, Bessemer grew rapidly inits early years, earning it the nickname,“The MarvelCity.” The city is just southwest of Birmingham and is thehub of western Jefferson County. It is business-friendlyand home to a diverse mix of industries and companies. Bessemer also is home to Alabama Splash Adventure, thestate’s only water and theme park; the Autobahn IndoorSpeedway; and the 1,500-acre Tannehill IronworksHistorical State Park, which offers hiking, camping, aminiature railroad and historic craft demonstrations.

The Bessemer Board of Education is seeking an experiencededucator and administrator to inspire and lead the system’sadministrators, faculty and staff. The successful candidatewill be expected to lead the team to set and achieve thehighest standards of excellence, so every student receives acomplete and meaningful education.
Search Timeline
Alabama law requires the superintendent be chosen forgeneral fitness and character and that he/she beknowledgeable in school administration. The successfulapplicant also must have or be eligible for the appropriatecertification to serve as a superintendent in Alabama. Amaster's degree from a recognized four-year college oruniversity is required. The board prefers a candidate with atleast three years of superintendent/assistant superintendent experience.
