In recent issues of the Chronicles a series of articles has been initiated on French communitiesestablished in the J9'" century in various parts of the United States. In the December J998 issueof the Chronicles, Society member Joan Monnier began an article on the French settlement atCastroville, Texas. This is the concluding installment of that article. -ed.

Castroville, Texas: A French Alsatian Settlementby Joan J acquay Monnier

Building Castroville

The plans adopted for Castroville, Texas were typical of most European villages. The town was tobe built around a town square and a church, and the inhabitants of Castroville would live in town andfarm the countryside.

The architecture of the early homes of Castroville has beenrecognized as unique in the United States, and the area hasbeen designated as a National Historic District. Ninetyseven original homes remain today. (Castro's colonistsalso settled the nearby towns ofQuihi and Vandenburg in St. Louis Church. Photo by Joan1846 and D'Hanis in 1847.) Monnier

Buildings were constructed of local materials--limestonewith a lime/sand mortar. Many were later plastered onboth the outside and the inside and were white-washed.Wood shingles were used for the roofs and rocks wereused for chimneys and fireplaces. The kitchen was aseparate out-building.

As more .living area became necessary, lean-to structureswere often added to the rear of houses, thereby changingthe slope of the roof-lines. Later porches made from logsshaded the front doors and windows. Hand dug wells linedwith stones provided fresh water.

The Original Land Grants

By the original land grants Castro was promised a large parcel ofland if he persuaded 600 familiesor single men to settle on the land of a grant within three years. Each colonist would receive 640acres (320, if single) after building a cabin and cultivating at least fifteen acres for three years. Landwas also set aside for the erection of churches. The annexation of Texas to the United States in 1845delayed the distribution of deeds to the colonists. However Henri Castro and over 550 colonists

received land certificates between 1850 and 1855.Some settlers who received land that was notsuitable for farming began to raise cattle andbecame ranchers. Others found occupations neededto create a community.

To The Present

Castroville kept its quiet ways, marched in procession on Saint Louis Day, and kept its unwrittenAlsatian dialect for six or seven generations.

On May 30, 1975 Equisheim, Alsace and Castroville became sister cities. When Alsatian visitorscame to Castroville, they were amazed to learn they could understand the words spoken byCastrovillians in their Alsatian dialect. In 1995 the Alsatian Club was formed with the intention ofreviving the Alsatian language spoken by the older members of the community.

Although JuliaNott Waugh (1888-1958) published Castro-ville and Henri Castro, Empresario in1934, it was Ruth Curry Lawler, ateacher, who was instrumental inreviving the Alsatian heritage ofCastroville. In 1948 she organized aslogan contest whose winning entrywas "Castroville, The Little Alsace ofTexas" submitted by L.J. Haby. Thisremains today as the slogan forCastroville, Texas.

Another prominent organization, theCastro Garden Club whose goal is tokeep Castroville beautiful, was formedat a tea hosted by "Miss Ruth" in 1952.

The association Jardin des Racinessponsored two projects for Castroville

through the Lycee Agricole (Agricultural College) of Rouffach, France. In 1997 the college sentfaculty and students directed by Professor Paul Dulin to beautify a large area in Regional Park called"Jardin desRacines" (Garden of Roots). The students planted trees and shrubs around a plot in theshape of Alsace. In 1998 the visitors reconstructed the framework of an old Alsatian house that waspurchased by the association, disassembled and shipped to Texas. The site chosenfor the house waseast of the Medina River near the bridge and south of Highway 90. When the framework of thehouse was completed the students followed an old Alsatian custom of nailing a tree limb to the ridgepole. Now we know the reason for the prickly pear cactus we saw atop the frame of the roof of thisfuture tourist and cultural center!Sources:Castro Colonies Heritage Association, Inc. Translation: I am researching individuals from the region around Besancon who emigrated to theU. S. in the 191h century. I have found about forty people from my family, all of whom came fromsmall villages (Aissey, Lanans, Saint Juan Lanans located from 10 to 25 KM from Besancon) whowent to the U.S. Some of these whohadthesumames Boucard, Nolot, Voynet, Colin, Coeudevey,Corneille, Cornu, Deschamps, Picard, etc. settled in Louisiana, but most settled in Harrison(Frenchtown) and Allen (Fort Wayne) Counties in Indiana. I am willing to correspond with anyoneconducting research in Besancon .Ipossess the genealogy of individuals at least as far back as 1720.In return, Iwould like to obtain informatienonmy relatives [who emigrated to the United States].Jean Cuche
